An End to the Darkness is a new and unique 10-part audio drama written by Fiona Stewart helping listeners to explore some of the complex but timely themes of suffering from the book of Job.
Episodes will be released daily from 27th September.
We have searched for the treasure beyond our grasp. We have searched for wisdom, for meaning. Job is vindicated, and his friends are called out for the foolishness of their words. Job prays for them, and they are restored. But what about Job’s plight? Is it enough for him to receive blessing from God without understanding the reason for his suffering? Is thankfulness itself an answer to the question? And what have we learned from our exploration in the darkest recesses?

When his voice resounds, he holds nothing back. At last God answers Job’s complaint with a powerful, sweeping reminder of his sovereignty. Job recognises his smallness in the face of such majesty, and repents of his need for answers. Listen to the depths of his roar.

Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? Job’s three friends have said their piece, so a young man steps up to offer advice. At first he is hesitant to speak up, but once he gets going there’s no stopping him. Job himself has nothing else to say.

Is suffering directly related to our sin, and why is it so much easier to comment on these matters when they don’t affect us directly? Job’s friend, Zophar, tries to get to the heart of the matter, but his erudite words only add to the noise. Job clings to his integrity, and his knowledge of God’s omnipresence, but there is still no answer to his complaint.

Are any of us the heroes of the stories in which we live? And why is it so hard to find meaning in life? Bildad the Shuhite decides to speak up. His analysis of the state of things is harsh, but he tries to reassure Job that he is not alone in his suffering. In the depths of his despair, Job strikes a nugget of gold.

Negative spaces can be purposeful, and there is comfort and wisdom in silence, but eventually someone speaks. Job’s friend, Eliphaz, is the first to speak up. He wonders if the reason for Job’s suffering is that he has committed some sin against God, so he decides to help his friend find an answer. Job, meanwhile, is in despair.
