From the East Coast to West Coast to the Midwest of the United States, Geoffrey Fenelus has spent the past decade as a teacher, school leader, executive director, and consultant for schools, non-profits, and small businesses. He has been responsible for leading stakeholders in addition to caring for children within the education ecosystem. Now, as a member of the NFP Indiana Team, he finds himself (again) helping people with their people problems. Shifting industries from the context of education to the context of human capital solutions, benefits, insurance, and compensation, he notes that both industries are complex, however, he has a deep passion for UN-complicating things for people and producing solutions that will make a transformative impact in schools, non-profits, and midsize professional firms. It was my pleasure to sit in space with Geoff after developing a collegial friendship over the past 6 years. In this episode of The Cultural Capacity Podcast (Featured Voices) , Kara Gonzalez-Howard tells the story of how she chose nursing for her career path (and after nearly 2 decades, why she called it quits!). She discusses the significance her spiritual journey has played since childhood in making major shifts in her life and her joyful acceptance of the “reconstruction” phase of her life’s work. Kara served in healthcare as a bedside registered nurse and nursing professional development educator for close to 2 decades. During her nursing career, she gained additional certification in critical incident stress debriefing strategy, trauma-informed care, and suicide prevention. She was actively involved in holistic and best-practice nursing initiatives as a bedside nurse and strives to bring similar strategies and education in partnership with her clients. Balance, energy, and wellbeing have been a top priority in her own practice as well as her mentorship and coaching practice within her current role as VP of Innovation & Marketing at Educator Aide (a consulting firm focusing on cultural change management for K-12 schools, non-profit & corporate agencies). Using her expertise gained within the rigorous healthcare industry, Kara partners with 1:1 clients in other sectors who are in need of an outside perspective when it comes to balancing between career, self-care, and family. Kara's coaching services are for professionals seeking to enhance balance, wellness, and long term cultivation and growth of personal and career goals. She volunteers on the board for the mental health services nonprofit, the Northeastern Center, and is an appointed school board member for a K12 school district in the Midwest. Comedian Katt Williams shook up the internet last week with an astounding interview that reached 49 million + viewers on YouTube alone within the first week of publication. The astounding traction of this interview is enough for any creative, (especially those focused on teaching others about communication) to stop and take note! Why did this episode resonate so deeply with such a broad audience? As we normally practice sharing the stories of others with our "Featured Voices" interviews, we thought this was a perfect opportunity to showcase the concept of perception vs. reality!
On this "mash-up" episode of the Cultural Capacity Podcast, join us for a juicy crossover with the Gonzalez Sisters (our other podcast, WIGIPEDIEA @sketchytherapy on YouTube)! Yes, that's right...Justine & Kara - sisters, business partners, and creators of The Cultural Capacity Podcast - have also been developing a sketch comedy channel + podcast! Our work with clients can get HEAVY, so, when giggles are hard to come by, we have used our love of comedy + chit chat & developed several wig-wearing characters on our alt channel (https://www.youtube.com/@sketchytherapy) to break down different pop culture observations that bring us joy (or just plain get under our skin) !
The Cultural Capacity Podcast is most known for our extensive professional trainings & discussions about developing ourselves and our communication with others. Bad communication can sink a relationship (personal or business) very quickly, while good (and truthful) communication is the foundation of any positive outcome in our relationships & professional endeavors! Why is this a crossover episode? We often utilize our sketch comedy channel to practice improv & public speaking! Creating an interesting narrative & effective communication of a narrative off the cuff takes practice, so what better way to practice this skill than sketch comedy & improv? (Our imrov experience also helps us bring levity to our in-person facilitation during some of our tougher topics of group work. When a room gets "heavy" it's always nice to be able to crack a joke and redirect!)
Join us in this crossover conversation between communication & comedy as we discuss this very timely interview to start off our 2024!

Join us for a conversation with Dr. Aimee Evan! Aimee is a sought-after researcher and educational leader. After teaching in, researching, building leadership capacity to sustain efforts, and supporting schools in improvement, she wondered why we wait so long to help schools and, therefore, help students.
As a Senior Research Associate and School Improvement Specialist at WestEd, Aimee has an inside and outside perspective on underperforming schools. Growing up on the Southside of Chicago, she attended Chicago Public Schools when CPS was the "worst school system in the U.S." even though no one in her community knew so. Witnessing the lifelong impacts of the quality of education our students receive, Aimee has spent over 20 years working shoulder-to-shoulder with school, district, and state leaders to improve the quality of education for all students.

When we fixate upon and glamorize the past, it can be even more challenging to accept the present realities. The current climate and cultural health of your organization deserves to be creating community and collective progress based upon the current realities.
↗️ Any form of CHANGE requires leaders to understand cultural change management.
⁉️HOW?!
✅ Identify and analyze your current systems, practices, and cultural health of your organization.
✅ Design and implement a communications-driven strategic plan.
✅ Collaboratively develop and enact healthy systems of accountability with mechanisms for self, shared, and collective accountability.

In this episode, we have a conversation with Brad Klausman. Brad was raised to be a conservative Christian, abiding by a strict biblical moral code. Encouraged to become a minister, he attended Bible college, graduating with a Masters degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. After 20+ years of serving in full-time ministry, Brad began to question his belief system and the validity of the Bible. What began as doubts, grew into deal-breakers.
"After several years of discovery, I walked away from Christianity completely in October of 2019. While I relished the freedom I discovered, my internal and external worlds were thrown into chaos. I found myself at 48 years old at reality ground zero. Now what?
Over the past years, I have slowly rebuilt my reality in such a way that allows for questions, doubts, reflections, and most importantly, hope. There is hope for healing and happiness after breaking free from the chains of religion! I made it through the valley of this journey. Allow me to walk with you through this challenging journey.
Obviously leaving religion brings stress and anxiety, including the loss of relationships, family, and community. These changes are, unfortunately, all too common. However, I discovered an innate potential within me to become the creator of my own destiny. With the right focus and empowerment, you too can seize this freedom and limitless potential."

In this episode, we welcome Mr. Blake Nathan. Blake is an Atlanta Native who holds a bachelor's degree from The Tennessee State University where he majored in Aeronautical and Industrial Technology with a concentration in Aviation Flight. Following graduation from TSU, Mr. Nathan became a Woodrow Wilson National Teaching Fellow and received a master’s in technology from Purdue University.
Once becoming a classroom teacher in Indianapolis, Indiana, Blake realized there was more work to be done in the education sector. He wanted to find a way to change the education system from within. He wanted the presence of African American males and females and teachers of color, in general, to not be a rarity, but normality. This was his inspiration for founding Educate ME Foundation. Under his leadership the organization has received national attention in regard to Educate ME’s innovative approach to diversify the teaching population.
