Hosts Eric Bueschlen and Chris Herzberg wonder about The Machine Stops by E.M. Forster. Our hosts get right into it with all of the sci-fi connections this story has and it was written in 1909! The starship Enterprise has visited more than one planet that now has problems because they forgot who built the machine that protects them; the same in The Machine Stops. E.M. Forster creates a frightening world where people are hooked into a machine afraid to go into the polluted outside world; like the Matrix the main character Neo wakes up in an amniotic pod to a very different life he was living, like Logan's Run where society is so afraid of leaving the domes they live in that they allow a culling at the age of 30 to curb population. These stories have a strong connection to Vishti's pod and her son, Kuno's journey to escape the machine. How could E.M. Forster have known so much about 100 years into his future? Respect.
Hosts Eric Bueschlen and Chris Herzberg talk about The Fountains of Paradise by Arthur C. Clarke. Sri Lanka, Taprobane is the setting for this story and real-life home to the author. Questions about whether the myths and illusions that fill the early history of the setting told by a far distant narrator, Starglider perhaps, similar to the construction of the space elevator. HBO's Raised by Wolves premiered during this read and our hosts have some insights that cross over to Fountains of Paradise. We talk about how this story is the "hero's journey" in the apocalypse. Lauren Oya Olamina and her group escape to the north through slavery and mobs of left-over humanity at our worst. A horror show. Lauren develops her own religion based on change. She also suffers from "hyper empathy", hyper sensitivity to others' emotions. Lauren sees the apocalypse coming and studies survival skills and creates a "go bag". Your hosts contemplate what should be in their go bags. There are many references to settlements on other planets and super drugs and other futuristic marvels.
