This system of religious persecution was initially established in the 12th century to combat heresy, primarily targeting the Cathars.

Spain's iteration became notorious for its intensity, driven by the monarchy and religious leaders to consolidate power and unify the country under Catholicism.

In the 1830s, Spain and Mexico signed a treaty to recognize Mexico's independence.
Spain had been weakened by wars and Mexico needed to be seen as a legitimate country.
Important people in making the treaty were Lucas Alamán and the local priest Miguel Hidalgo from Mexico, and Francisco Pizarro Martinez from Spain sent by Queen Isabel II.
The treaty encouraged improvements over diplomatic relations and trading.
For Mexico, it confirmed their independence and helped them build international relationships. For Spain, it meant officially the beginning of losing its territories in the Americas and focusing more on issues within Europe.

Today, we get into the life of Saint John of the Cross, born Juan de Yepes y Álvarez in 1542 in Fontiveros, Spain. From a humble beginning, John faced hardship early on, losing his father at a young age.
Despite these challenges, he pursued a religious life, joining the Carmelite Order in 1563. John met Saint Teresa of Ávila in 1567, and together they sought to reform the Carmelite Order, which led to severe opposition. He suffered imprisonment and harsh treatment but remained steadfast in his faith.
Saint John of the Cross is renowned for his profound mystical poetry and spiritual writings, such as "Dark Night of the Soul" and "The Ascent of Mount Carmel." His works explore the soul's journey towards God, emphasizing sacrifice and divine union. Canonized in 1726, his legacy as a mystic and poet endures, still inspiring countless seekers of spiritual depth.

WWII was rumbling on early stages, pressures to the dictator from the fascist Germany and Italy at the time, expecting to have favours returned, while the population was struggling to survive with families divided due to the conflict.

After last week´s episode, our friends teach us the developing of those three devastating years. Battle after battle, while population suffered tremendous attacks and thouthands of civilians were assesinated, tirany was gaining territories in a horrific way.

Industrial revolution in Europe, developed quickly in mid 1800's. So did in Spain, claiming and bringing unexisting rights to labor hands. Things changed not so rapidly, but firmly when Unions started to defend those deserved rights to protect people working for corporations and big patrons.
May 1st is a National Holiday when 90% of businesses are closed in commemoration of those workers who fought for the future generations' rights.

Everybody in this country remember that day as they remember exactly what they were doing.
