Apostle M. Russell Ballard said at a campus wide BYU devotional in 2017, “We need to listen to and understand what our LGBT brothers and sisters are feeling and experiencing. Certainly, we must do better than we have done in the past so that all members feel they have a spiritual home where their brothers and sisters love them and where they have a place to worship and serve the Lord." We are going to continually find ourselves stepping off the path of discipleship in our journey back to the Father. We can picture it like being stopped on the side of the road. Progress halted. In those moments we have to decide if we will turn back to God or continue to turn to sin or weakness. Progress is less frequent stops. Progress is being more quick to turn back to the path of discipleship through the Atonement of Jesus Christ!

Happiness is not the absence of hardship. It is not the fleeting hits of dopamine from eating chocolate and ice cream. And it is not found in worldy pursuits.

Happiness is a feeling you can have based on the thoughts you are thinking or the sum of the life you are living. Happiness, or joy, is a feeling you can receive from Heavenly Father who promises us eternal joy.

The temple is our greatest resource here on Earth. It is where the great plan of our God is unfolded before us once again and we learn who we are and what we can become. We partake of a special spirit that can reside there because of what is not found in holy temples. It is a place set apart in the world where the Savior can enter in. The Lord is bringing temples to his people so we can partake of the blessings and power that come from attending there. Our prophet has emphasized how MUCH we will need this power in the days ahead. Our access to temples is rapidly increasing with 100 temples announced in just the last 5 years! It is worth great sacrifices on our part to be there as frequently as our circumstances will allow.

God's plan for us is Jesus. It is the Atonement of Jesus Christ. This gift is available to all, it is for our use both when acting as the sinner and when acting as the saint. It can fill all the spaces that we need. It allows us to overcome and to become. It allows us to return to the presence of the Father. It allows us to give others a free pass and helps us to forgive and to heal. Christ has experienced all we will experience and knows exactly how to help and aid us. We are never excluded from the glorious blessings inherent in the Atonement of Jesus Christ but we DO have to invite that help into our lives. In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe that God is our loving Father in Heaven- the literal Father of our Spirit and that we are truly precious to Him–each of us is a beloved Spirit Son or Daughter of God. He is an all powerful and all knowing God who loves us beyond comprehension. We are precious to Him. His love is extended to us all the day long and through the night. It is constant! We can come to see and feel of that love by looking at the dealings of the Savior, through ancient and modern scripture, through our personal dealings with Him and watching for His loving hand in our lives and through looking at the world around us.

Listen in as I talk about creating a family culture with intention!

We are all developing a family culture, and with intention, we can make it something rich and long-lasting, passing on traditions that strengthen and bless each member of the family as they are involved and proud to be a part of something special. We can include elements of symbols, doctrine, and traditions.

Each member of the family needs to feel meaningful connection, like they count and like they contribute and as those things are present, they can then have courage to be imperfect and go out in the world, trying new things and expanding their lives.

A strong marriage built on the foundation of the gospel is a sure foundation for a family to build on. A marriage relationship comes before our relationships with kids or with outside pursuits. We can strengthen a marriage by utilizing the 3 things that can build a strong culture- We have symbols of our union, we have doctrine which can be any history, stories, rules, commitments, etc. And we have our rituals- the things that renew our relationship on a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly basis. We take time to connect in meaningful ways. The way we part and reunite can be significant moments that stick with us, so we want to make those moments count.

Listen in as I model the 4 Steps of Self-Compassion as presented in the book, Self Compassion by Kristin Neff: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10127008-self-compassion. I model how to use the steps and what the opposite looks like as well. I also define self-care as not about running from the moment or the emotion but taking an action toward resolution or just being kind to ourselves like we’d want a friend to do for themselves.

Four Steps:

1- recognize/acknowledge/accept

2- you remind yourself you’re not alone in this

3- show yourself compassion

4- be kind to yourself by taking some small action

I invite you to make this a practice. Try to SEE someone today. Let them know you see them by a compassionate smile, a word of encouragement or praise, or a kind gesture.
