Legacy is a powerful word. A proactive word. It denotes something valuable being handed down from one period of time to the next. Its purpose is not to memorialize the past, but to advance a secure future. Jesus spoke of Legacy in the Great Commission when he said “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” In other words: Give to others what I have given you. Make of others what I have made of you. This legacy of Jesus has been faithfully handed down from generation to generation. And now it’s our turn. Our legacy in this world depends on how we, as one church family, decide to invest what was given to us into the lives of others. Not for our own glory, but for the one who is alive today and advancing his Kingdom through us. Pastor Pete concluded this series with a personal message that helped us see that God views generosity through a different lens than we do. If you make a living by what you get, then you leave a legacy by what you give. Let’s launch a legacy together, as one, for the one!

The G.O.A.T. acronym is commonly used in the sporting world to reference the “greatest of all time.” Society defines greatness based on our achievements. The one who achieves the most is greatest. In this message, Pastor Pete used the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace as an example for standing firm in faith during a challenging situation. Their story shows us that standing firm takes courage and faith, but when we stand we have the opportunity to inspire others. The enemy is constantly putting pressure on us through a culture that bows to many different idols. Listen to learn how to live a stand-up life in a bow-down world.

While Babylon is the physical setting for the book of Daniel, in Part 2 of this series, Pastor Beth Miller suggests it’s also a mentality, or way of seeing the world. And it still exists today. It’s a confused way of thinking that elevates self, lowers God, and blatantly stands up to God in pride. So when the sin of pride is all around us, how do we humble ourselves and see sanity restored?

Pastor Pete began a new series this week called “The Daniel Dilemma” to teach us how to stand firm and love well in a culture of compromise. From the day Daniel was brought into Babylon, he stood for his faith. His example shows us how to live in a culture that is constantly shifting its core values and has turned tolerance into compromise. We do this by learning to live in the tension between truth and grace. As we hold God’s truth high and give freely the grace we freely received, we can journey together to make a difference.

Pastor Pete wrapped up the “Holy Spirit” series by teaching about the three different baptisms mentioned throughout the New Testament that are available to followers of Christ, and explained what the third baptism, the baptism in the Holy Spirit, is. The word baptism means “to be immersed in.” The first baptism happens at salvation as we are immersed into a relationship with Christ and His body. Water baptism is the second baptism. The third baptism is the baptism in the Holy Spirit, which provides the power you need to live this life victoriously and to do everything God is calling you to do.

In this second message of the “Holy Spirit” series, Pastor Pete explained the meaning of two of the three major holidays on the Jewish calendar: Passover and Pentecost. In the Old Testament, Passover celebrates when God spared the lives of the sons of the Israelites who put lamb’s blood over their doors during the plague in Egypt. This was a foreshadowing of what Jesus would do for us. Jesus, who is our Passover lamb that came to fulfill the Old Testament law and holidays, was crucified on Passover. Pentecost, which means ‘fiftieth’, is observed fifty days after Passover and celebrates the day that God wrote His law on tablets of stone in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Church on Pentecost, fifty days after Jesus died for us. And this time, God wrote his law on our hearts and gave us His power to make a difference. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live righteously, supernaturally, and on mission to accomplish the things God created us to do.

Psalms 127 describes children as arrows in the hands of a skilled warrior. So often we treat our children as though we need to keep them safe at all costs, instead of realizing they were born to be dangerous to the enemy themselves. So how do we raise up a generation of battle-ready arrows? We train them to hear God's voice. Listen as Sarah Grice, the KidsLife Director at Life Church Buffalo, dives into five common questions people have when it comes to hearing God's voice, and as you do, we pray you come to the realization that God loves speaking to His children, and He's still speaking today!

A city in ruins. A community struggling. A crisis of faith and an unpredictable future. That’s the setting for the story of Nehemiah. And what we learn in his journey about rebuilding and restoring what is broken is timeless. It has multiple layers. On the surface his story reaffirms this idea that “we can do more together.” But it also is an indicator of something more critical. When we do something together, it has the potential to affect how a generation sees God.

If you’ve ever experienced the pain of unexpected loss or been confused by the trials and tragedies that happen in life and said “God, why? But when the disciples thought God was absent, idle, or not paying attention, He was actually engineering the greatest miracle of all time. The resurrection is an anchor you can hold on to no matter what difficulty you’re going through. You might be living in a Friday, but God knows that Sunday is coming!

We all have good intentions when it comes to the changes we want to make in life. But good intentions never seem to be enough to produce lasting change. We can even get some instructions on how to implement the change we want, but eventually we have to do something with the information we’ve been given. Unapplied truth is like unapplied paint. It doesn’t do anybody any good. The value is in the application. Merely reading the Bible or coming to church and hearing a sermon is one thing. But real life-change happens in the “doing”. Application makes all the difference. Information without application does not lead to transformation.
