We cap the Multicultural Madness series by diving into ways in which intercultural communication is infused into different areas of higher education. Julie provides insight on immediacy behaviors, for both domestic and international students, that professors can incorporate into classrooms. We also talk through aspects of study abroad programs that can be intentionally designed to encourage more exposure to experiential learning and intercultural communication.
We continue our conversation with University of Iowa professor, Julie Alexander, to define, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and explore how these each tie into intercultural communication. Julie speaks about challenges she's experienced at professional organizations due to her LGBTQ+ identity and her recent transition to living and working in an entirely new region of the United States.
In this first episode of the Multicultural Madness series, I sit down with Julie Alexander, a professor of Communication at University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business. We learn more about her journey growing up in rural North Carolina, attending a military academy for college, and building a career in higher education, all while battling with her own cultural identity along the way.
