Guam's T'Nelta Mori is one of over 175 young public servants from the Insular Areas who have graduated from the Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP) and shares her impressions and experience in the program and her work on Capitol Hill for the Guam Congressman. Since 2008, the Office of Insular Affairs has supported the ELDP to assist the Insular Area governments with developing and retaining the qualified and skilled staff needed to lead insular governments. The ELDP is implemented by the Pacific Islands and Virgin Islands Training Initiative or PITI-VITI (www.pitiviti.org) and is funded by the Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs.

Ms. Mori shares her impressions and experience in the program. She serves as the Legislative Director for Guam Congressman Michael F.Q. San Nicolas.
Since 2008, the Office of Insular Affairs has supported the participation of young leaders from the Caribbean and the Pacific and contracted the Graduate School to develop and implement the ELDP to assist the Insular Area governments with developing and retaining the qualified and skilled staff needed to lead insular governments into the future. The ELDP is implemented by the Pacific Islands and Virgin Islands Training Initiative or PITI-VITI (www.pitiviti.org) and is funded by the Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs.

Coral reefs in the U.S. Virgin Islands are under attack from the Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease. The Honorable Efraim Atalig, the Mayor of Rota in the CNMI, discusses efforts to control and prevent the spread of the invasive Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) on Rota and ultimately the rest of the Northern Mariana Islands. The CRB has destroyed 20 percent of Guam's coconut trees, and has now spread to Rota, where teams are working hard to prevent it from spreading further.

COVID-19 had a devastating impact on the Marshallese community in Northwest Arkansas but the dedicated teams in Springdale at the Marshallese Educational Initiative (MEI) and the Marshallese community across Northwest Arkansas rallied to help families and save lives. MEI Co-Founder April Brown, Program Director Carlniss Jerry, and Program Specialist Benetick Maddison talk about their work bettering people's lives and bringing underserved communities together through education and outreach in Arkansas, home to the largest Marshallese population outside of the Marshall Islands.

In this conversation we learn more about coral reef preservation work and the National Coral Reef Management Fellowship Program managed by Program Director Wendy Wood-Derrer at Nova Southeastern University in the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography. The Office of Insular Affairs in the U.S. Department of the Interior funds several coral reef fellows in the program for American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
