Even though the calendar reads "June,", it was a rainy and cold day here in the Pacific Northwest--one of those days you just want to hunker down with a good book, a cozy blanket and a hot cup of tea.
I had a lot on the schedule today, and it turned out, life/the universe had other plans for me today. I was feeling a little bit sorry for myself that "everything" got cancelled. And then I saw a post by author and social scientist, Arthur C. Brooks (the happiness guy) about starting the story over.
And I was reminded that we can be with what is, and accept it, without giving in or giving up. Just be with it. And recognize it's just part of the story today. And then story keeps moving forward. New pages. New characters. New trials and tribulations. New joys.
In other words, all of it is what it is.
And that's the beauty of it.
And it's the focus of today's mindfulness practice. We practice to practice. Looking forward to practicing with you.

Step into the world of Yvonne Caputo, a storyteller whose narratives echo with the resonance of life's deepest truths. With a gentle yet profound touch, Yvonne unveils the essence of human experience, inviting us to explore the depths of what it is to be human and alive, and the power of mindful presence.
Yvonne's journey is not just about storytelling; it's a testament to the transformative power of conversation and connection. Through her books, "Flying With Dad" and "Dying with Dad," she guides us on a journey of self-discovery, grappling with the complexities of grief, loss, and the profound beauty of honoring loved ones' wishes.
A Conversation on Life and Death: In our intimate conversation, Yvonne delves into the heart of the matter, asking the questions we often shy away from. Is it possible to prevent death if we had acted differently? How do we want to be remembered in our final days? These questions linger, challenging us to confront our own mortality and that of our loved ones with courage and compassion.
So, Yvonne wondered, why do we avoid talking about the end of life until it's too late? It was during her time working in a retirement community that Yvonne discovered the Five Wishes®, sparking a courageous conversation with her father about his end-of-life wishes—a conversation that ultimately shaped the course of their journey together.
From Heart-to-Heart: Yvonne's first book, "Flying with Dad," delves into her father's experiences in World War II, but it's the conversations about end-of-life wishes that resonate deeply with readers. In "Dying with Dad," she shares the joy of her father's passing on his own terms—a triumph born from heartfelt discussions and unwavering love.
"Dying with Dad" serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring us to embrace meaningful discussions about aging, death, and grief. Through Yvonne's guidance, we learn that these conversations aren't just about facing our mortality; they're about embracing life's final chapters with grace and dignity.
As our conversation draws to a close, the echoes of Yvonne's wisdom linger, reminding us of the importance of embracing life in all its beauty and complexity. Let us heed her call to have the conversations that matter, before it's too late—illuminating the path towards a life lived fully, with love, with connection, and without regret.

Together, we navigate the realms of raising energy, sidestepping self-doubts, and overcoming obstacles on the journey to discovering one's life's work.

Only after A LOT of mindfulness and breathwork practices do I have a shot at living an intentional life. Throughout my life, I've had many moments where I've been reactive and negative. Over the years, I've found ways to find what used to be the elusive pause before responding. Did I mention it's taken a lot of practice?
That's what we will work on today. Life is hard sometimes. Especially when there are a lot of expectations for us to be "on" and "positive" all the time. But we can still find peace, and still find ways to be intentional--and to respond instead of react. In this short mindfulness practice, 2e'll delve into the delicate art of non-reactivity and navigate the subtle dance between annoyance and joy, inviting you to explore the transformative power of perception. Tune in and practice non-reactivity with me today. It'll be good for the both of us. And your family and friends too:)

I remember the first time I saw a sign for Yin Yoga at a studio I was going to in downtown Portland. I peaked in one day, and saw what looked like a bunch of people super relaxed and blissed out. Needless to say, I was utterly freaked, and vowed never, ever, ever to go to Yin.
For those unfamiliar with Yin Yoga, it’s a style of yoga–as I’ve learned from our guest today, yoga instructor Sarasvati Hewitt–that derived from the martial arts, adapted by Paul Greely and others in the US, and which draws on yoga postures that, essentially, you stay in for 3-5 minutes and sometimes much longer, really leaning into the stretch, and the silence.
I wouldn’t have been able to stay in one posture for so long at the time, and I certainly couldn’t imagine making myself comfortable. I was all in for Ashtanga Yoga, Crossfit, Mountain Biking–and any sport I could go hard and never stop. The more pain, the better.
I was not alone in this view….And I was not ready until I had to learn to get comfortable with slow discomfort, for truly being present with myself and taking care of myself. Until, I was ready.
Yoga teacher Sarasvati Hewitt. was also initially aghast at a practice of slow, very intentional, very present, very slow–did I say slow–yoga. But she was equally intrigued by the science that supported this ancient-meets-modern-world practice.
And it turns out, according to Sarasvati’s intense studies into the neuroscience of yin, this yoga practice, treats sleep disorders, mental health conditions, addiction and general human-ness. In this conversation, we explore the science and the art of yin, how Sarasvati stumbled into this fascinating world of ancient art and modern science, how she is dedicated to teaching this style–and more importantly, how this practice can work for everyone.

Dr Paul Taylor Pitt, or Paul, as he insists being called, despite the many letters behind his name is an incredible teacher. He balances a genuine self-deprecation with grounded confidence and curiosity and a spirit of collective experimentation. It’s pretty fucking awesome.
No wonder he’s a successful organizational development & somatic coach, having been recognized with awards such as HR Most Influential Thinkers 2022 from HR Magazine OD Network's 2023 Global Award for Organizational Excellence and Impact. Awarded to Do OD, among a long list of awards throughout his career.
But it wasn’t until one fateful day at the gym that he really found his calling—somatics. And he’s pursued a somatic/ embodied approach to his OD and personal coaching, and to say this has enriched his experience as well as his clients is an understatement.
Add to that his LGBTQ advocacy—including authoring a gay Scottish folk story—a first, and with a happily ever after ending, along with his podcasting and organizational development and coaching at Metamorphosish and you start to get the picture of this renaissance of a man.
In this conversation, we cover a lot. From defining exactly what embodied coaching is, how it differs from conventional conversational coaching, what its benefits are, how Paul was drawn to somatic coaching, and of course some conversation about the state of affairs with LGBTQI A+ community, Scottish folklore and Barbie.
So settle in, get cozy with a cup of tea—and feel like you are a part of this conversation, listening intently from a side chair. It’s the perfect way to relax and enjoy a fascinating conversation that’s sure to leave you wanting more.

Life gets super clear when you’re about to die. And it was no different for Adrian Jones who was having a “widow-maker” heart attack. As he lay there on the hospital table for emergency surgery, three things became really clear: 1) He didn’t want his wife to fly home a widow, 2) He didn’t get to tell his kids he loved them yet that day, and 3) He was going to walk out of the damn hospital.
And that was just the beginning. Seriously. This story! It’s like the Universe just lined everything up for Adrian Jones. And it did.
After walking out of the very hospital he was born in on his very birthday, he left with the clarity of mind that only those who have cheated death do. He had to find his birth parents. And then the Universe obliged in the most beautiful, even haunting way. And you just need to listen to this episode to know what I mean.
We talk about learning to listen to our bodies, the power of friendship and community, the synchronicity of the Universe, the beauty of family. What’s not to love here in this episode?
Find out more about Adrian Jones here:
Adrian Jones is a financial services veteran and the host of the Profound Awesomeness podcast. Having survived a widow maker heart attack in the fall of 2016, he has set out to share his story with the goal of helping and inspiring others. Through writing, speaking and podcasting, Adrian hopes to shine a light on what makes us human and explore what it means to survive and come out the other side living with more meaning, intent and purpose. Ultimately, Adrian seeks to understand what makes us human in a way that lifts people up and leaves them changed.

Dr Jenny King , Co-Director at the Center on Trauma and Adversity Associate. Professor at Case Western University, neurobiologically-informed doctor of social worker, therapist consultant, and author and I sit down for an intimate conversation on trauma and somatics, breathwork, and more. As a trauma specialist deeply interested and trained in the neurosequential model of therapeutics (NMT) developed by Dr. Bruce Perry as well as traumatic stress in the breath, Dr. Jenny King has developed techniques that work for her clients, and for herself. She’s a big believer in amassing easy, accessible tools we can use daily to bring our nervous systems in balance.
As we discuss more fully in this interview, there is no magic practice that works ALL the time for ALL the people. What works for you one day might not be as effective as the next. After all, she explains, we are a complex person, full of all that brought us to this moment, which is also unique.
Dr. Jenny and I also explore how we collectively, but uniquely (weird, right?!) experienced the trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic trauma, and how, frankly, it’s not over.
While there’s been a cultural push to bury our heads in the sand and not look at how this affected us—whether because loved ones became ill or died, or because our way of life so radically changed then and now. As humans, we are widely adaptable which is amazing, but sometimes we adapt to hide from difficult emotions. And, collectively, we’ve done a pretty damn good job of that. But we are experiencing the consequences of that collective head in the sand.
Dr. Jenny and I explore what we can do to move from this collective malaise to health using those easily accessible tools that work so well—the breath, movement, being vulnerable and sharing our truth with others we trust and love. We get curious about where we are, and really see it and experience so we can learn from it and move on, growing all the while.
I know you’ll love this conversation with Dr. Jenny King, and you’ll want to know more.

Lucas Rockwood wasn’t always an international yoga and breathwork and yoga entrepreneur, author and leader doing Ted Talks, and speaking at Yoga Alliance, Meta, and Noom. Like many of us, pain ended up being the great persuader. Like me, and like some of the listeners here, he overused substances as a way to cope. In a way, they were his solution—until they no longer worked, and instead, turned on him.
That’s when Lucas Rockwood found yoga. He describes himself as a little lost, physically inflexible, but with a thirst for knowledge. He wanted to know everything about yoga and perhaps more importantly, about the one thing we all do every day that is integral to life—breath.
But none of his yoga instructors at the time could really say much about breathing—other than that we should all be doing it, especially in yoga.
Such began his lifelong pursuit of the mystery and magic and more importantly, the science of breath and the body.
In this short-form interview, we cover a lot of ground: how simple breathing exercises can change our lives, decrease stress, improve sleep, and make us whole and healthy.
Listen in as one of the world’s leaders in yoga and breath—and entrepreneurship—got his start, why breathwork is so important to us all, and why and how we all can do this and lead happier, healthier lives.

Every day we take steps forward. We move. We develop. We improve.
That's all good, for sure. But sometimes to move forward, we need to be still, be present, rest.
So that's today's practice, my friends. Practicing resting in the breath, in the moment.

It’s not often that you have a lawyer becoming anything other than, well, a lawyer. Often, people think lawyers are boring, or at the very least, a buzzkill. Or they might be a little afraid of them. I know I was–until I became one.
But even more surprising to a fellow lawyer is when a lawyer gets out of the business, does something else. Stops the billable hour madness, if that’s the kind of lawyer they were. Usually they become real estate agents, or CEOs or sometimes Executive Directors of non-profits.
So, I was pretty surprised to learn about Kristen Swinehart, former corporate lawyer, turned psychic medium! And her story is truly engaging. While she’s always had a different relationship with death than many do, it wasn’t until much later she started to feel that maybe, just maybe, she could commune with “the other side.”
And for those of you who might be skeptical. Stay open. Kristen is no crystal-ball reader. Instead, she’s engaging, and has nothing to hide, instead talking about what she feels, and how she knows, and what she knows, openly and honestly.
And communing with the other side can really help people like us still on this plane of existence. We might need some closure. We might need to grieve. We might need some reassurance. Indeed, Kristen talks about how some readings can be unexpected, tragic, and moving, And others, well, they can be fun and engaging.
So, sit tight, keep an open mind. Find out just how a corporate lawyer becomes a modern psychic medium, and get inspired by why she does this, and how she helps people by acting as the antennae and translator for loved ones on the other side.

I am always surprised–though I dont’ know why–when I am as inspired as I am but “regular” people. They do incredible things. And I find them even more inspiring when they have lived through pain, and transformed that pain into something great.
That’s our guest today, Kim Gross.
While Kim is an inspirational life coach and a motivational speaker on a path of personal and spiritual growth, that was not always her path. For a long time, like so many of us, she believed that she was not good enough, so she started creating masks to cover who she really was. Her masks included performing, perfecting and pleasing. This turned quickly into anxiety, depression and even autoimmune disease.
Fortunately, she began to study from wisdom teachers, both past and present, and from her experience, she not only healed herself, but also developed the 5-Step Power Pathway, a process that helps others to feel more empowered, more freedom and joy.
And so rest assured, friends, we dive DEEP into the 5 step process, and discuss how it can remove the masks, help us overcome imposterism, perfectionism, and people-pleasing. Now, doesn’t that sound good?

Lately, I've been getting to rest a lot. I injured myself on a crazy climb up Mt. Defiance when I probably wasn't quite ready--the irony is not lost on me! And so I've been out of commish, as they say. And while I meditate daily and do breathwork daily, I'm not so practiced at "doing nothing" (aka not exercising on the daily).
I've been getting MANY messages from the universe about resting lately, though. And when I say lately, I mean this year. Like maybe even longer. I'm a slow learner, I know.
But I figure I'm in good company. Which is why I put together this practice this month. We can practice "just being" together.
And also, did you know I am a breathwork facilitator? So if you're a "do-er" and it's challenging for you to sit for meditation, might a suggest a little breathwork? It's steeped in science, it's super accessible, and you will, I promise, notice big changes pretty quickly, if you practice. So get in touch.

Burnout sucks, no matter how you slice it. And the pandemic arguably made burnout its own pandemic as we tried to do it all—work from home, teach our kids at home, all the while living with uncertainty and stress. Some of us managed pandemic burnout—-and burnout in general—with behavior that actually exacerbates burnout, anxiety and depression. We drank more, we smoked more, we ate more. We certainly stressed more. And this became pretty much the norm, tunneling a heck of a stressed out neuropathway.
But women had been doing this already, even prior to the pandemic. Trying to be the best mother, or best at our career, the best spouse, the best community member—and we put unrealistic expectations on ourselves all the while as we try to do it all.
Wendy McCallum knows this story all too well. She’s experienced 2 significant burnouts and knows what it is to try to treat burnout symptoms with alcohol. As a Burnout and Alcohol Coach & Wellness Expert who works with busy professional women, many in midlife, she also knows a lot about hormones and how hormones affect women in midlife and the impact that burnout—and overuse of alcohol—has on women’s hormonal and emotional health.
In this talk, she offers the science of burnout, alcohol use, and midlife hormones. More importantly, she offers gentle but directed wisdom around what we can do to prevent and treat burnout and live a happy, fulfilled life.
Listen in for an insightful discussion, with practical steps you can take right now to prevent and treat burnout.

Author Andrew Daniel didn’t always have it together. In fact, like so many of us, he lept from one self-help practice to another, searching for the answer that would solve it all. It was a lot of work, this searching. And even though he learned a tremendous amount and was even quite successful including developing products used by Fortune 100 companies, and much of what he learned was helpful, at least for a time, he still ended up in the same old spot–stuck.
His questions, though, did not go unanswered. And he’s developed an extraordinary path for getting us all unstuck--or, as he calls it in his manual for living, Awaken to Your True Self–the “stucky story.” This stucky story is precisely what keeps us in the same place, and keeps us buying the illusion, feeling like imposters in our our own lives and careers, and may be responsible for perpetuating perfectionism and addictive behaviors.
In this conversation, we dive deep into Daniel’s philosophy, including how spirituality impacts our journey to get unstuck, how we need to stop “fixing” everything and instead start realizing fully that we are not broken, and are meant to live a full and integrated life.
We talk about solutions, practical steps we can take, and the work we can do to live a meaningful, purposeful life.
We also talk about the groundbreaking work he’s doing at the Center for Cinesomatic Development, where he leads Cinesomatics, the healing technology he developed, which uses video and somatics to do deep work, integrating embodiment, spirituality, shadow work, symbols, archetypes, and trauma therapy.
Grab your cup of coffee or tea. You are going to want to listen deeply to this fascinating conversation with a leader in personal healing, who knows this work, has done this work, and is dedicated wholly to the work of healing the self.

Y'all. I meant to have this practice for Earth Day. But life happens. And while I did this practice myself on Earth Day, I did not get a chance to send it all to you. My hope is that you practice some gratitude for this planet we get to live on a short while on days that aren't "Earth Day" too.
Doing so always connects me, grounds me, reminds me of my right size and place on the planet, my interconnectedness. And, sigh, it just centers me right where I need to be. And I remember all the beauty and awesomeness of what's right in front of me.
So, let's do this. Let's practice some appreciation for Earth.
Note that I'm dedicating this practice to Sara Wilson who recently published This One Wild and Precious Life. You'll want to read or listen to this book. It's the real deal on the climate, and what we humans can do so we can keep enjoying the planet that gives us life.
xoxo

From corporate America to self-development innovator, MaryAnne Demello-Smith is creator of the Message in the Middle Podcast & BookClub, a place to explore life’s difficult lessons through interviews, self-development, book clubs, self-empowerment and discovery.
As our guest, MaryAnne has observed, life is messy. It darts this way, and that. And we don’t have a lot of quiet time for reflection. Sometimes we lose sight of ourselves as we move through life, pushing toward the next goal, whether that’s career, family, both. We push and push and just do the next right thing
The Talking Heads pointed this out a couple decades ago, “You may find yourself in another part of the world, you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile. you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife, and you may ask yourself, well, how did I get here?”
And like so many of us, that’s what happened with MaryAnne Demello-Smith. But instead of spiraling down the drain, MaryAnne took the time for quiet reflection, and then moved forward, step by intentional step, into the life she envisioned in that quiet reflection. As a society, we too are at an inflection point, where we can decide where we want to go, as individuals and as a society. It’s a scary and exciting place to be all at once.
MaryAnne and I talk about this, and how all of us were forced into a quiet reflection during the pandemic. And even though this looked really different for some, and was not terribly quiet at all for some of us, it was a moment of disruption, of forced change that made us all look at ourselves. Why am I here? How did I get here? Where do I want to go? Where is there meaning?
We talk about balance. We talk about setting intentions, and having an intentional life. Of giving that gift to ourselves. And getting validation from ourselves, and not just relying on the external. How we find courage. How we get over ourselves, our egos, and move beyond perfectionism. And how we are all in this big messy life together.
Lean into this intimate conversation for some identification and some inspiration.

During the pandemic, we got really used to being separated, and maybe even alone. But even before--and certainly after--I know I can feel like I have to figure things out all on my own. I forget I've got people on my team. So this is a little practice, developed from both Tara Brach and Kristen Neff's work, in reconnecting with our team and ourselves.
By the way, did you know I can be on your team? Whether by working with me on mindfulness and somatic practices, or with self-development or career coaching, I'm here for you.

Today’s guest, Joe Longo, is a sort of renaissance man. From football player to photographer to IT professional, to oracle card pulling coach and yoga teacher, although he might not admit it, Joe’s wisdom about life has been there since childhood. At the age of 5, when he was really scared, as only we get as children, he heard the words, “Joe, you don't have anything to be afraid of,” as if they were being said in the very room. Asking his mother about it, he wondered if these were words of God. Indeed, his mother assured him, they were. And he’s been living his personal and professional life trusting just that. And it’s paid off.
Though who knew—certainly not him—at the beginning of the pandemic, when his pivot to life coach began. In mid-March, 2020, when the world pretty much shut down, to survive, to keep his sanity, he began pulling oracle cards (what I call nice Tarot cards) every day on Instagram. His words and insight began to take on a life of their own, inspiring thousands—literally thousands—around the world. And the added benefit? He felt connected—and so did his followers.Since then, he’s been on a journey to inspire others to find their path, whether through coaching, meet-ups, retreats, kundalini yoga or on his podcast, Daily Shot of Inspiration.
Step into this intimate conversation about following the winding road of and to your dreams, trusting yourself and the universe. You might just get whisked away by the intoxicating allure of Joe, happy and conscious content creator.

We all know the story of the Turtle and the Rabbit. And we know exactly who wins. But in life we aren't here to win. We are here to be, to love, to do good. But the same principles apply. Slowing down, being present and intentional is not only going to get us a lot further down the road, we're going to be a lot happier too--and so are the people around us.
Settle in for this short mindfulness practice that will reconnect you to your body and its presence and wisdom.
Have you ever wanted to meditate but thought you could not quiet your mind or just can’t find the time, or maybe you have tried and it just hasn’t “worked?” You’ve been frustrated because you understand that science has proven the physical and emotional benefits of mindfulness, but you just can’t get over this hump or plateau.
Today’s guest, Dr. Michael Amster, has the solution–and it takes less than a minute a day. With this practice, the practice of accessing awe (as in wonder), Dr. Amster and his colleague, Jake Eagle, found an easy, and remarkably simple, scientifically-proven practice to overcome burnout and anxiety, ease chronic pain, find clarity and purpose–and a sense of calm and acceptance with what is, all the while savoring what is–in less than a minute a day. They call it The Power of Awe, which handily, and helpfully, was recently published and available as a remarkably accessible book, with science, observations, history, and practices.
When Dr. Amster is not blazing the trail for new mindfulness practices and conducting scientific studies that back their effectiveness, he’s a pain management specialist, leads meditation practices, and engages in the power of awe every day.
In this interview, we dig deep into the Power of Awe, its benefits, and how you just might tap into what is arguably the most powerful tool we can tap not only to ease this daily practice of being human, but to learn to experience life as it truly is, full of wonder.

We get used to the everyday, the ordinary. And we sometimes (maybe often!) forget to notice what we see, hear, touch, feel every day. The other week, in the 3rd episode of The Last of Us, where 2 souls met and began to share a life in the post-apocalyptic world, where even basic goods, much less water, was available, there was this incredible moment: Frank shows Bill to a hidden garden, where he's grown strawberries for him. And they each take bites of the strawberry, and are overcome with effusive joy at the flavor, the texture, the experience. Oh, to have that kind of awe for the everyday!
Well, today, that's our practice. We will practice being present for both the ordinary experience of annoyance, and the everyday (or could be!) experience of joy and awe.

Usually, we don't think of love or self-compassion when we think of the actions needed to have a healthy body. If you're anything like me, you think of pulling yourself up by the boot-straps, or hunkering down, or really "following the rules." Turns out, that's part of our culture too. And this toxic sort of thinking has seeped into how our teens see themselves too. So-called "almond moms" (and dads) think they're helping their teens be healthy (aka attaining "thin privilege") when the real culprits are shame and often a health condition called insulin resistence.
In comes Dr. Karla Lester, board certified pediatrician and life coach and founder of IME Community, who is working tirelessly to teach kids--and their parents-- to love themselves as they are and also take empowering action to improve their health.
Dr. Karla and I talk about how she found her purpose in teaching self-love and healthy habits, and we delve into everything from "thin privilege" and toxic media messages to body positivity and the science around insulin resistance, and living a healthy lifestyle--physically and emotionally.
You’ll want to listen to this episode, about how Dr. Karla has her own lived experience with weight, and being a human, making mistakes , developing her own self compassion and working to help others do the same. It’s a message of humanity, a hard look at media and our own complicity in the childhood obesity epidemic. And an educational look at weight gain, insulin resistance, and shame—and mostly, it’s a message of hope.

What is it like to live Alcohol Free? Whether someone has a problem with alcohol, or just wants to see how their life might change by being alcohol free--or if you're just "sober curious" and you see that more and more people are starting to live alcohol free, this conversation is for you. Heck, even in Portland, Oregon, where I am--beer haven USA / IPA capital of the world--a duo of women developed an app to track and discover all the AF hotspots in town (Olivia & Sarah Sears). Suddenly, and wonderfully, people are experimenting with what it means to be AF. For me, livening alcohol free has led to nothing short of miraculous. I thought I was living wooping it up—alcohol gave me the courage I never had. I thought I could say the things I really meant. That I was creative, funny, smart. And all that was true—but it was not alcohol that gave me that. That’s just who I was. And it was alcohol that actually covered all that up, and I didn't even know it.So, finding a way to live alcohol free? That, my friends, was the keys to the kingdom. That has been responsible for all the happiness, love, joy, and success in my life. And that is what today’s guest is here to talk about. Living a Rich, Full life. Alcohol Free.Author, coach, and successful entrepreneur, Kay Allison , author of Juicy AF (alcohol free) is an award winning innovator who helps professional women break their drinking habits and get free from booze, free from shame and free from anxiety. She was a professional success as a Sr. VP of a global ad agency when she first when AF.After Kay Allison went AF, her life unfolded exponentially. She increased her income 600% and married the love of her life. She’s free of shame. And wildly happy. Her book, Juicy AF (Alcohol Free) Stop The Drinking Spiral. Create Your Future, and her course “30 Days to Freedom for Professional Women” provide a step-by-step guide for high-achieving women. This interview is a game changer. We talk personal. We talk real. And Kay sets out the 5 spiritual laws from her book Juicy AF that guides women to a life that is not only AF, it’s a life that is truly free.More about Kay and how to connect:Juicy AF—Stop the Drinking Spiral, Create Your Future https://juicyaf.life/book/Website: https://juicyaf.life/#howInstagram: @juicy_af_lifeFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100083081481264TikTok: juicyaf_lifeLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kayallison1/To connect with Melissa at The Fully Mindful:Website: https://www.thefullymindful.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-chureau-a8763810. Who am I if I’m not a lawyer, a CEO, a doctor, in finance, a chef, a restauranteur? That’s the question that so many of us have asked ourselves—and are terrified of the answer. But how can I go on, day after day, with so much stress, so much pressure—and not just pressure the job puts on me, but the pressure I put on myself to succeed? In so many cultures—including western culture—there is emphasis on career success, and we have learned—and given kudos for—to work harder and harder and harder. And don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with working hard or being ambitious or wanting to succeed. But where things unravel is when we focus so much on this success, so much on our jobs, that we lose our sense of the whole self, lose our relationships, maybe even lose ourselves. And that’s what happened to today’s guest, Mayda Pac. She spent 16 years in high finance, from Paris, to London, to Wall Street. And she excelled. And she pushed herself to the point of ignoring cancer for 2 years and passing out on the street. And even that did not stop her. She still had deals to do.It was only when she had a moment of clarity that she took the terrifying leap of leaving her career in high finance, knowing what to do with her life at all. But she knew that if she didn’t take that leap, she might not be so lucky next time.Listen in to this conversation, where Mayda candidly tells her story and how she ended up where she is today, along with many, many pearls of wisdom that will undoubtedly resonate for you today.Find out more about Mayda:https://maydapoccoaching.com/about/mayda@maydapoccoaching.com Free meditation for Serenity at Work: https://maydapoccoaching.com/free-resources/Instagram: @MaydaPocLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/mayda-poc-coaching/Find out more about Melissa and The Fully Mindful:https://www.thefullymindful.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-chureau-a8763810/--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/melissa060/support
At the age of 15, Marlita Hill heard the words---very clearly--"Go Watch." Go watch a dance performance. While she did not know where there words came from, she knew she had to go. And there started her journey into her passion--dance and choreography. Despite the many odds stacked against her--and having to train for a dance audition next to six and seven year olds at the age of 23--Marlita put one foot in front of the other, with her heart leading all the way.
Join us in this inspiring--and often downright funny--conversation, with a woman who followed her heart and listened to that all-knowing voice to a career in dance, choreography, education, authorship, and now, entrepreneurship. What could be more humbling than losing one’s memories? Not knowing who you are, really, and what you’ve done? Not recognizing faces? That could reasonably strike terror into most people—quite understandably.
And yet, for Dane McCormack, a Tasmanian-born and raised man living on mainland Australia, it never occurred to him. Instead, despite having lost most of his short and long term memories to cancer and its subsequent brain infection, amongst other devastating losses, Dane methodically went in search for his memories. And he did so through writing.
He spent 12 months in the hospital where he was given 24 hours to live several times. Despite losing the toes off his right foot, 20cm of his bowel, his long and short term memories, his sense of smell and taste, he did not lose his sense of humor.
His story is one of inspiration, and as he explained about his incredible journey, “I'm a lot worse off because of it, but I'm also better because of it.” Listen in to this captivating story about a regular man who lost his memories, only to gain the gift of slowing down, being present, and accepting—and loving—life as it is.
As Dane says, “Don’t be scared. Be prepared.”

For me, there is nothing quite like a deep conversation with a fellow mindfulness practitioner and teacher. And that is exactly how I felt—and I think you will feel—in this conversation with Sarah Ariaudo, author, speaker, mindset coach, and creator of the Mindful Based
Healing program to address the mental and emotional
well being of cancer fighters and their family.
After ignoring her own health for the sake of her dedication to work, she was forced to confront her situation—and found yoga, and mindfulness as two core practices that brought her back to health, and brought her back to her whole self.
Her practices are accessible for the everyday person, and are created to support cancer fighters whose lives have been disrupted by all the anxiety, planning, financial and family stress this disease causes. She’s a leader in this area, forging new avenues for science-based practices that, if she has it her way—and she should—would be available to every single cancer patient, for free.
What really struck me in this conversation, though, was her utter humility, and how she walks her talk by using mindfulness in her every day life, and especially with her family.
If you’ve ever wondered about mindfulness and thought you could not access it, I get it. But you’ll walk away after this podcast with the hope—and the tools—to give it a try, one minuet at a time.

I know. I know. Just what you wanted right before the holidays! That's exactly why I chose to publish this podcast about eating well post-Halloween, and pre-Thanksgiving here in the US.
It's because I needed to be reminded of eating well, for health and well-being--and where eating unconsciously, or to "eat my feelings" backfires.
Welcome to this honest and practical conversation with Melissa Rohlfs, a Board certified health and life coach, who understands all too well what it feels like to stuff feelings, treat emotions with the sugar demon, and how out of control and serious this really can be.
And how it isn't our fault. How a multi-billion dollar industry has gamed us into eating more. And more importantly, how we can give ourselves the gift of eating for health and well-being--and the grace to be human.
We talk about some of the solutions Melissa has found over her years as a health and life coach, and she lets you in on them right here, on the Fully Mindful.
In fact, that’s kind of her style—generous and real. She offers a free guide to body freedom and peace, and if you’re interested, follow her on instagram and set up a call with her. You won’t regret it.

Have you ever felt like your mind was spinning out of control and you just thought that if things could just slow down, maybe, just maybe, you’d get a handle on things?
Or ever felt so disconnected from your body that you honestly felt like a head walking around on a stick?
Well, I sure have. And it turns out I’m not alone. And more importantly, there’s a way out of this morass that we get ourselves into sometimes. And even better? We don’t have to do it alone.
Kristin Taylor is one of the good people out there who know just the right tool to give you at just the right time to help us when we need it. With 20 years of experience as a coach and counselor, Kristin uses mindfulness, psychology, and somatics—along with her insanely beautiful soft empathy and her keen observation and intuition—to help us dig our way up and out and into something really beautiful.
And in this pod, she lets us in on a couple of these tools that we can use right away.
So, whether you're a coach who wants to learn from an exceptional coach, or a fellow human on the long journey into the night themselves, you'll want to check out this conversation with Kristin.
What I love about Kristin, is not only is she ridiculously well trained and educated in this stuff—she’s lived it herself. Which always, always earns credibility in my book. If you’ve lived it, you know it, and I’m ready and willing to learn from you.
So settle into this intimate conversation on coaching, mindfulness, body-oriented insights and self-compassion.

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Humanity. To boldly go where no one has gone before! Seriously, creating space in the mind (and body, of which the mind is part) is the practice. How often have you felt like your thoughts were impenetrable—or like you had your own back against the wall? Practicing creating space can help in those moments. The more we practice here, the more we can access the space that is always there when we need it.

As a lawyer myself, I honestly can't think of anything funnier than being a lawyer. It can actually be pretty ridiculous. The stories. The contortions we put ourselves in. Yeah. But perhaps even funnier than being a lawyer is being a parent. How many stories do you have--or have your heard--about crazy kid stuff?
Enter Heather Weigler, a successful government lawyer (yes, government lawyers can be successful!) who is also a parent, and also a comedian. She found comedy in lieu of jumping out of planes in order to come back to self. Always serving others as a lawyer and a parent is hard work. Just getting out there on the comedy stage and being funny. Well, that's another thing.
Heather and I explore how comedy is a release, a freedom. And that vulnerability is a superpower. And finding one's purpose is a journey, not a destination.
And if you like this conversation--and you surely will--you will want to check out Heather's comedy clips on TikTok!

It's kind of fascinating how much we don't really know, isn't it? Sometimes, though, when we look back, we can't believe what we didn't see or appreciate. Imagine the surprise at being whisked away in your early 20s by your parents in an effort to save you from yourself and try to get you on the path sobriety, only to find yourself at a retreat with the great Thich That Hanh. Just let that gel for a moment. It's kind of like being whisked away to learn a thing or 2 about basketball when you've hardly played, only to find yourself at a basketball camp with LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Damian Lillard and Shaq. Or a writing camp to find Toni Morrison, Haruki Murakami, and John Irving. You get the picture.
Enter Dr. Chris Willard, now a Harvard psychologist, author of 20 books including Growing Up Mindful and Alphabreaths--and soon out, AlphaBreaths 2. Now sober for decades, and trained in mindfulness and psychology, Dr. Willard talks early recovery, trauma, mindfulness, working with kids and adults, and how, as the title of the episode says, everything is impossible and possible, all at once.
Truly a conversation you won't want to miss. Plus, I promise to share the mix-tape Chris mentions near the end....as soon as he sends it!

“Yes there are 2 paths you can go on, but in the long run, there’s still time to change the road you’re on.” —led zeppelin. Haven't we all wondered what life would be like if we had made other choices? Haven't we all felt, at times, a little like Dr. Jekyl, Mr. Hide? S Amanda Marshall (Amie), former US Attorney for the District of Oregon turned lawyer for those of us who've hit our bottoms, been accused of doing perhaps worse, and those of us who need a true believer in our court, tells how her whole life aimed toward greatness, reached a fever pitch, and came crashing down all around her. Alcohol. Anxiety. Terrible mistakes. They nearly cost her her career, and nearly cost her family and her sanity. But when there is an inkling of willingness to be pulled out of the pit of despair, a surrender to what is, and when one alcoholic identifies with another and believes for a moment that even they can be helped, the magic happens. And that is what happened to Amie Marshall. We talk about what it was like, what happened, and what it's like now. And how surrender and humility combined with a willingness to believe and a whole lot of hard work, mindfulness, and self-care restored Amie to a woman of hope, a woman who gives, and a woman who is kind to others, to self, and who helps others climb out of the pit of despair and back into a life worth living. Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio famously observed, "We are not thinking machines. We are feeling machines that think." And yet we spend most of our days in the space between our ears and don't pay a whole lot of attention to the rest of our body, and what it might be telling us. And yet, the body is smart. It's where we first comprehend feeling--whether joy, fear, excitement. We feel it in the body first, and then our minds get into the game. So, what if we spent more time paying attention to the body? I'm not talking about exercise--which is great, and we should do--but instead I'm talking about listening in, really feeling what we feel. That's what today's practice is. Sensing into our bodies to gain that wisdom, that insight. If you are interested in learning more mindfulness practices or incorporating them into your daily life at home and work, reach out. I can help. It's kind of crazy that we ever think we can do this thing called life alone. And yet we operate in this fantasy on the daily--with all sorts of negative consequences. We isolate. We fear. Or the opposite: We think we know it all, and well, we all know how that goes. One of the negative consequences of this "pull yourself up by the bootstraps---all on your own" mentality is that we kid ourselves into thinking everything is just fine, fine, fine (queue up Alanis Morisette for all you fell 90's music lovers). And this can make us numb to our reality. Until it all kind of falls apart. Turns out we can even be "fine" after something that we'd all agree is pretty traumatic. But at what cost? In comes Debbie Harrell, resiliency coach with a hell of resiliency story of her own. Like me, and many others, she convinced herself that everyone was fine....until it wasn't. And when the reality of it all hit her, she re-awoke to something she's known all along: that we do not do this thing alone. And as f-ed up as the world can be, we can also do some pretty beautiful things together. And we're going to have to if we want this thing to continue. You're going to love this conversation as we get real about what happened and what life and hope and the collective good can do. Find Debbie and join her collective to do good! We're all going to die someday. It's this lesson of impermanence that none of us will escape. But imagine dying more than once....in one summer. And imagine that the medical experts you're relying on don't really seem to know what is happening with you, and you're not even sure they're actually listening. In comes Fred Rutman, a regular hockey-loving Canadaian man. An economics professor just living his life. And that is exactly what happened to him. Listen in on what he experienced, how he advocated for himself, how he recovered fully after one doctor literally threw a book at him--one that saved his life. Fred shares how he came to learn about and practice Intermittent Fasting--not to lose weight, but to recover from major cardiac events--and how this practice has not only led to full recover, but he's a better man with a better life. And he's helping others do the same. You bet your life, you won't want to miss this conversation. Being fully mindful doesn’t mean we aspire to have no thoughts or feelings. Those are goals of dead people! The point is to be fully aware, not push away, but to practice giving space between ourselves and our thoughts and feelings and experiences. Join me in this short practice to become fully mindful.

Katie and I talk about her journey through the loss and grief to finding purpose, both in the loss of her first-born daughter, and in her continual reinvention after that loss and now on a journey of living with cancer. Katie is the author of Still Breathing, My Journey Journey with Love, Loss & Reinvention, a memoir about the loss of her first daughter, who she birthed stillborn at full-term, her transformation with her husband and family through that grief into becoming an author, an advocate, coach, and mother of Moxie-- who is vibrant and curious and who, in the most tender of moments, holds space for her parents' memory of Poppy. Katie, a former lawyer, found her purpose which she describes as "it always comes back down to one word, which is love. That is at the foundation of, of everything." Join us for this powerful conversation where we go deep, we go real, and we talk of loss, of love, of hope, and of purpose. My path to healing was both long and winding. Now, In the wake of both birth and death, I own this story by choosing love over fear, acceptance over resistance, and being over doing.

Stephanie Duesing, parent, author, educator and advocate, talks about the devastating discovery that her straight-A, water-polo playing, artist son at age 15 was blind--and had been his entire life without anyone, including him, knowing it. Stephanie candidly talks about this discovery, and her family's harrowing journey to get her son a diagnosis and treatment for CVI (cerebral-cortical visual impairment), a common form of visual impairment. We talk about how her son navigated exceptionally through life with the love and support of his family both before and after the diagnosis. We'll dive deep into her family's experience, how there were helpers along the way, and how trusting themselves and their love for one another supported them along the way. And we talk about how stumbling into what was a devastating discovery but catapulted Stephanie into advocacy in the CVI world, and how this experience forms the basis for her book, Eyeless Mind: A Memoir about Seeing and Being Seen, a must-read for anyone who suspects a family member or friend has CVI, or for anyone who must rely on self-advocacy to get the health care they deserve.
