In today’s day and age FAT is a four letter word.
In other words, the simple macronutrient has become a synonym for “evil”, and having fat upon your person or on your plate is perceived to be very bad indeed.
In this episode, my guest and I are going to focus on dietary fat and explore why it is not the devil it was set out to be.
Today, I am joined by Dr Cori Stern. Dr. Cori has been helping people restore and optimize their health naturally since 2001. Her passion for alternative medicine grew out of a sick childhood characterized by a very poor diet, incessant chronic infections, and never-ending cycles of antibiotics. At the young age of 15, she decided to take her health into her own hands and began self-studying topics like the gut-brain connection, toxins, and how diet impacts a person’s overall well being. Later in life, upon re-realizing her childhood dreams of helping those who suffer heal naturally, she decided to become a chiropractor at 32 and graduated at 37. She now assists people all over the world with overcoming health challenges and advocating for their healthcare. Dr. Cori Stern oversees a busy private practice where she also educates other chiropractors on how to achieve optimal results with their clients. She is the creator of the Dr. Cori Stern - Take Control Of Your Health channel known for its bite-sized information on a wide range of modern health topics.

I firmly believe that binge eating recovery is NOT a miracle.
Rather, it is a result of developing recovery habits.
If you’re willing to put in the effort then, over time, it is inevitable that you WILL get better!
So let us consider what habits are; why they matter and what steps you can take today to start working on your own recovery habits!

Stop crying. Don’t be sad. Girls don’t get angry. Stop being a nuisance.
You may have heard these and other words when you were growing up; and they all amount to one thing: feelings are bad. You shouldn’t feel them. In fact, won’t it be wonderful if you could turn yourself into a robot and not feel anything at all?
Yet despite your best efforts, these plans are doomed to fail. Humans aren’t wired NOT to feel and attempting to do so carries dire consequences be it binge eating or burnout.
So how do you get back in touch with your feelings? That’s what I’m going to discuss with my guest today.
Today, I am joined by Hieke Maagdenberg. Hieke is a breathwork & mindset coach who’s on a mission to help high-achieving, ambitious women create more impact, joy and freedom in their lives. After seeing the other side of the medal herself, she has now created a balanced, fulfilled and unapologetic life on ALL levels, and she shows her clients how to do the same. Her strategies are focused on breathwork, nervous system regulation and feeling your feelings, which result in a deep level of self-trust and confidence, and the ability to reach any goal through fun, ease and play.

Weight shaming is just a bit of tough love…. Or is it? There are people who view weight shaming as their moral duty, a way to show that they care deeply about the other’s health. Yet does weight shaming actually lead to positive behaviour change? That’s what we’re going to explore in this episode!

What makes you happy?
A new dress, a fancy car, a big house?
While all these things are nice, the happiness they bring is only temporary and it fades away as quickly as it came.
So perhaps a better question to ask might be: what gives you deep and lasting fulfilment? Or in other words: what helps you flourish in life? My guest today can provide some pointers for you!
Today, I am joined by Dr Maike Neuhaus, the founder of The Flourishing Doc. Imagine eating what your body needs which also happens to be what you genuinely enjoy… sounds far fetched? It’s not! In a nutshell, this is what intuitive eating is all about! That said, there are plenty of myths and misconceptions surrounding this practice and my guest is going to shed some light on it.

“Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” - said Kate Moss, infamously, in the 1990s. Since, there has been tremendous focus on challenging the beauty standards and unrealistic body image in the ED recovery community. But has the movement gone too far in recent years?

Eating disorders don’t have a “look”. You can’t tell whether anyone in your life might be currently struggling simply by what their bodies look like. You can however examine their behaviour and enquire about their motivations and offer help or just a shoulder to cry on. In this episode we’ll dig into the main signs that something may be amiss.

Has your body had enough?
You’ve been working hard. Too hard even. In fact, you’ve been pushing your body to the breaking point… and one day, the body said “enough”. It stopped working.
For me, this manifested in alopecia. For my today’s guest this manifested in periodic paralysis.
Let us explore how we can connect back to ourselves and win back the trust of our bodies once again!
My guest today is Natalie Leon, known to her clients as The Wellness Whisperer. Natalie helps people heal their relationship with body image & food through mindful movement, intuitive nutrition and a healthy mindset. If you could wake up and see everything just the way it is, without any illusion... would you? And if you did, how would you handle the overwhelm which comes with this increased awareness?
Today I had the pleasure to discuss this and other questions related to individual sovereignty with John Gusty, co-author of “The Red Pill Revolution”.
After over 30 years in the entertainment industry working “behind the curtain” for some of music’s biggest names, John turned his attention to health and wellness in an effort to help his wife heal from what was originally diagnosed as Multiple Sclerosis. He soon realised that the same deceit and profit motive that plagued the entertainment media was even worse inside the Medical Industrial Complex. As a champion of individuality, he now devotes his time to producing content that celebrates the spirit of sovereignty in all aspects of life.

How much “should” you eat?
Mainstream dietary advice suggests that there is a simple answer to this question: you should eat food in quantities determined by serving sizes; and if you don’t, well… this means you’re greedy!
However as we’ll discover today, portion sizes (and serving sizes) are nothing but BS 💩

Can you take “healthy eating” too far?
Short answer: yes!
Orthorexia is a classic example of a situation when too much of a good thing makes for a very, very bad thing.
And while orthorexia is not an eating disorder that is officially recognized by DSM-5, it can still wreck havoc in the life of a sufferer.

Instant gratification plays a role in the origins of eating disorder behaviours, and importantly tends to prevent sufferers from seeking treatment.

Today I have for you something a little bit different: an audio from an IG Live where Dr Marianne Miller interviewed me!
We focused on the self-care mindset, a topic which is very close to my heart. I sincerely believe that engaging in self-care is absolutely critical to successful eating disorder recovery. In fact, I see self-care as a skill: something which needs to be learned, and regularly practised to yield results.

The 1944 Minnesota starvation experiment is one of the most iconic nutritional studies ever done. Its objective was to understand the effects of semi-starvation on human body & mind, and figure out the best way to refeed the semi-starved people of WWII Europe. But the study is very much applicable to the present day and it has implications on what happens to us when we’re trying to diet. Slashing calories leads to the same physiological adaptations.. And the same mental damage that is done by semi-starvation!

If you’re listening to this podcast, you’ve probably experienced yo-yo dieting first hand: you’ve followed a diet for a while, lost some weight… and in time it all came back up! If that’s you - don’t worry, your experience is far from unusual! As many as 80-95% of all dieters regain all the weight they lost and then some. So what is going on? Why is it happening? Well, that’s because the “eat less, exercise more” dieting is fundamentally flawed.

Continuing on the topic of calories, let’s ask the question: is there any truth to the dieting mantra, “calories in - calories out”? Well… yes and no! As with pretty much anything in biology, there isn’t a straight answer, because there’s a lot of nuance to this question! It’s neither an outright lie, nor is it a justification to track every mouthful you eat and every step you take on MyFitnessPal.

Let’s get one thing straight: there is no one single cause of binge eating that in 100% of cases will result in BED. However, there are myriads of factors which in a certain person, under certain circumstances can crystallise in an eating disorder. In this episode, I explore the EXTERNAL factors, that is forces outside of yourself. Look out for episode 10 to dive into the internal factors!

In this episode, I explore what “holistic” really means in the realm of eating disorders and the implications this has on your life.

There will certainly be more episodes coming on the subject, so if there is a myth that you’d like busted, let me know!
