In this episode, we spoke with Dr. Nairne Cameron. She is a Geography and Geology professor here at Algoma University. We learned about her academic career as a student, from her undergrad in Ottawa to her post-grad years in Alberta. Dr. Cameron also takes us through her years at Algoma University, where she is currently part of the Lake Superior Living Labs, and runs a number of food security and sustainability-related programming, including projects with the People's Garden.

AUSU Creates is back this Wednesday! This Week’s theme is calligraphy. This is NOT the calligraphy you see on a 10 000-year-old scroll. This is “modern calligraphy”, we will be encouraging you to use a highlighter or a pencil, or try both!
Information and instructions will be sent out Wednesday morning. You are welcome to join us in the Speakeasy in Sault Ste. Marie, in the Student Centre in Brampton, or from your very own room, using the information in the email.

The week of March 8th marks International Women’s Week. AUSU celebrates women every day, and we hope you can join us in observing International Women’s day on Wednesday. This will be a special day, as the speakeasy will host an International Women’s Week service fair.
The week's commemoration can trace its roots back to the early 1900s. Today and back then, Women fought against gender bias, and for their right to live in a fair and equal society. The United Nations officially marked March 8th as International Women’s Day in 1977, and it was later expanded to a weeklong observation that begins on the first Saturday of March.
We encourage you to learn more about the achievements of women, and their continued fight for Women’s rights. There are challenges to overcome every day, and victories to celebrate!

As Black History Month draws to a close, we want to continue celebrating Black Excellence! AUSU knows that black students face all the usual challenges related to achieving a degree, and also face a number of systemic barriers.
We want to celebrate the 2023 Black Graduates with the return of Black Graduation, a special evening with you, and for you in May. A form will be emailed on Friday, we encourage you to complete the form and join the celebration!

The Canadian Federation of Students is proud to continue its partnership with UFile to bring FREE tax filing for students! As Algoma University students, you will be able to use the UFile online platform to learn more about the tax filing process and how to successfully submit your 2022 tax return.
Please check the newsletter in your email, and follow the instructions outlined to begin filing your taxes.
The Sentient is continuously looking for volunteer writers to join its team. Assisting with the newspaper will allow you to gain valuable experience in journalism and media studies while being involved in the Algoma University community. If you are interested in covering stories and topics that impact your community please fill out the google form attached to your email.

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, we wanted to share the story of Rosemary Sadlier.
Born and raised in Toronto, Ms. Sadlier became the president of the Ontario Black History Society in 1993. The organization is responsible for the recognition of Black History Month at the municipal and provincial levels in Toronto and Ontario respectively.
During her time as president, she successfully petitioned the federal government to recognize Black History Month as an annual national event. Today, she continues to advocate for social justice and the education of black history in the Canadian curriculum.
Looking ahead at the week,
The Sault Ste. Marie campus will hold its first drag show of the semester This Friday! The Haus (house) of Gore will be joining AUSU for a spectacular night of drag and donations to the HIV / Aids Resource Program (HARP) and the Ontario Aboriginal HIV / AIDS Strategy (OAHAS).
On Wednesday we will be hosting our very first ever “AUSU Creates” event! Each month we will feature different creative opportunities, this week the theme is “Drawing’. You can participate in person at the speakeasy or you can join us remotely via the link that will be emailed Wednesday morning.
And on Sunday, our Thunderbirds will have their senior night at the GLC, as they face off against the York Lions in OUA Basketball action.
We have one more important reminder,
AUSU is currently hiring for four VP positions on the Brampton and Sault Ste. Marie campus. The application deadline is right around the corner. Please submit your resume and cover letter to studentunion@algomau.ca by February 17th.

The AUSU Election Campaign has officially kicked off. All students are encouraged to get involved in electing the AUSU Board of Directors for next year. The candidates will participate in live debates over the course of three days; February 1st. 2nd and 3rd.
Please note that election day will be conducted on February 9th and 10th through your student portal.
Looking ahead at the week,
Pride Coffee will take place on the Brampton campus on January 30th, and the Sault Ste. Marie campus will host its Queer Coffee on January 31st.
Our Thunderbirds are back on campus! They will face Ontario Tech University on February 4th in OUA Basketball Action.

On Monday, January 30th, the Sault Ste. Marie City Council voted to approve the student bus pass. Stickers will be distributed as soon as we receive them from the city. We appreciate your patience, and we hope to make an announcement soon.
