In this, our fourth and final Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month podcast series, we talk to two of our boxers, Zoe Blosser (a retired registered nurse) and Kevin Barnes (retired MD/pediatrician). Kevin talks about the symptoms and signs of PD from his perspective as an MD, identifying some of the earliest symptoms of the disease that can occur long before diagnosis. Both reiterate the importance of early identification to help in the fight against the disease’s progression, including participation in our Rock Steady Boxing program. Both also touch on the frustration, anger, and denial that accompanied their diagnosis as well as the emotional toll that the disease takes on those diagnosed as well as caregivers. But for both, they hold on to hope for continuing to live well with Parkinson’s by early recognition, treatment and support. This is an enlightening and heartfelt discussion with Zoe and Kevin.

"When I was first diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, I felt so alone." Josh Meikrantz is 49 and has been living with Parkinson's Disease (PD) for 10 years. There is no cure for PD and as Josh says in our discussion, "You don't die from Parkinson's, you die with Parkinson's". Josh has been battling his degenerating symptoms to maintain control over his life and his body for years. His doctors told him last year that they have reached the "end of the rope" for medication but he has vowed to continue his battle with every tool at hand. Josh talks with me about how RSB has helped him manage his PD symptoms and how important it is in his fight to prolong his ability to function as normally as possible for as long as possible.

She is my hero and a role model for her teenage granddaughter. Her message to other people is "Focus on your fitness no matter how old you are. It's not too late to prioritize your life with your family by staying healthy and fit." Listen to while she tells her story about how fitness was a part of not only her life but her mom's and her grandfathers. She continues the generational commitment to fitness.

Like physical health, financial health doesn't just happen. We have to commit time, effort and energy to get to where we want to be. Crazy right? Eating food to lose weight? But it's true. When you restrict your diet either intentionally to lose weight or just because you think you shouldn't eat food you are likely sabotaging your health and any weight loss goals you may have. In today's podcast, we discuss the importance of eating enough food to sustain your weight loss goals. Restrictive dieting for most people is not the right answer. You can eat enough, feel full, and still lose weight while staying healthy.
Restrictive dieting can cause long-term damages to your health as your body goes in to starvation mode. You can experience chronic fatigue, irritability, bone density loss, excess hair loss, mental and emotional problems, anxiety, depression, heart problems and many others. It's not too late to turn that around and educate your self on the right way to achieve healthy weight loss. Let's be honest. There is no magic pill. And if anyone tells you there is, run fast the other way. Reaching a goal, whether it is to get a pull up, eat better, get stronger, or live better, takes education, consistency, time and effort. The internet is full of confusing information that often overpromises results. Wading through countless websites, trying different programs, and paying for multiple gym memberships get frustrating. Listen to two stories from CCFH about two ladies who have gotten educated, been consistent, dedicated time, and put in the effort to reach their goals.

In February 2020, Carlisle Core Fitness and Health signed on with Active Life to create a different vision of how we served our clients, provided a place for full-time professional staff to positively change lives, and to grow beyond a singular fitness method. In the past two years, with the ongoing mentorship and support from Active Life, we have continued to evolve how we do business, professionalizing our approach to fitness and striving to set ourselves apart from the traditional, yet often ineffective ways of providing fitness. In a society where, in the last 20 years, the number of people paying gym memberships has nearly doubled to 60 million, yet the rates of obesity, morbid obesity, diabetes, heart disease, chronic pain and other life-limiting chronic conditions have increased exponentially, we need to do something different. We need to be better and do better in solving the problems people are experiencing that are shortening their lives, limiting their activities, and overburdening an already drowning healthcare system. CCFH is changing lives one client at a time. We are the healthcare clinic of the future and our staff are the healthcare providers of the future.
Today's podcast with guest Dr. Sean Pastuch, founder and owner of Active Life, is a conversation about how and why we are creating a place where we can change lives.

Over two years ago, Stacy pulled up to our building and debated with herself on whether she was going to get out of her truck and walk in our front doors. She found the courage to get out of the truck and walk in and over the next two years would change her life. She would lose 12% body fat and completely change her body composition, she would build strength and confidence, and she would find a place that would support her in her goals by providing her with coaching, education and knowledge. She had hip surgery several months before showing up at CCFH and the doctor's told her she probably shouldn't run again. But through a comprehensive program of strength, mobility and endurance training, she recently passed her ACFT run with her best 2-mile score. Listen to Stacy as she recounts her journey from lunges against a wall to her return to the active life she had wanted to get back to. She recently traveled to Alaska and hiked several miles up Gold Star Peak, something she would not have been able to do without pain and discomfort two years ago.
If you are intrigued by Stacy's journey and are interested to know if what we have done to help her, may be something that would be a perfect fit for you, schedule a movement screen and goal setting session with us: https://calendly.com/ccf-coaches/1-1-movement-screen-and-goal-setting.
When Dana started at Carlisle Core Fitness and Health she was simply looking to be in good shape for her age. She didn't realize the health challenge that she would face just a few months later when she was diagnosed with lupus, a diagnosis that everything online told her would leave her worn out, aching, and unable to enjoy life--a prognosis she found depressing and a little scary. She vowed not to become her diagnosis and set her sites on being fit for a person of ANY age. Through the Individual Design program at Carlisle Core, she started tackling one goal after another, building strength and getting even fitter. She learned that the weight number on the scale is only a number on the scale and doesn't tell the real story and she learned that she could take on any challenge. She not only found her confidence in the gym for movements she had previously avoided out of fear but her increased confidence in the gym directly translated to life outside of the gym. Her increased confidence in how she felt about herself meant that her co-workers looked to her as a de facto leader. Dana embodies what it means to build confidence in the gym to create success and happiness for life outside the gym. I hope you enjoy this episode.

This is the first in a 3-part series that discusses the mission, vision and core values of CCFH. Today's episode outlines our story. How we got to where we are today, the work we have put in over the last couple years to professionalize our approach to coaching and training and who we want to serve. This episode was recorded on our recent trip to Boston where we met with nearly 50 other professional fitness center owners from around the US and Canada and 10 staff from Active Life to discuss our goals and vision for our professional coaching businesses, to discuss the challenges we face as business owners and to celebrate the successes we have every day when our clients reach their goals, move without pain, and reengage in activities doctors may have told them they will never do again. I recorded today’s episode with my friend Mike DeMarco from Motives. Mike is a fellow active life professional and we took time before the start of sessions on our final day in Boston to chat about where we have been, who we are today and where we are going. I hope you enjoy today’s episode! Interested in seeing if we have the perfect solution to your fitness needs and goals? In this episode CCFH Coach Kristin Peckman talks about her journey from a debilitating back injury that left her unable to live independently, carry her own groceries and even tie her own shoes. She started working with Coach Maria at CCFH and with Maria's help Kristin was able to learn about healthy eating, recovery, rest, and appropriate training that helped her regain her confidence and eliminate her pain. It was a long and slow process, but Kristin is now pain free, returned to the gym and is continuing to pursue her goals as a competitive athlete.

CCFH member Chris Coutts talks about how CCFH and Coach Kaden have helped to manage his grief after the loss of first his father in June 2021 and then his wife to COVID-19 in November of 2021. Struggling with depression and dealing with weight gain, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure, Chris found CCFH and it has turned his life around. He's found an outlet for his grief, lost nearly 20# since starting in January, dropped his A1C numbers, and his cholesterol as well as "shrunk" out of most of his clothes. Listen while he talks about how Coach Kaden at CCFH met him where he was at and how his time with us has helped him to learn to survive.
At CCFH we have spent the last several months evolving our programming to better focus on general health and fitness in the gym so that our members can function better outside the gym. At CCFH we don't want to be the best hour of the day for our members, we want them to have the best hours of their day outside the gym BECAUSE of the hour they spend in the gym.
We start everyone off with a 9-point movement assessment that helps our professional staff assess where you may be experiencing limitations in your movements that can lead to pain in and outside of the gym, compromising your active lifestyle you want lead. In this episode listen while Jon Montag, head coach at CCFH and Samantha Godfrey, Clinical Director at Phoenix Physical Therapy in Carlisle discuss the differences between soreness, pain, and injury and how to tell the difference. They also discuss what's normal, what's not and when you should be concerned and when todo something about it. For decades, rest, pain meds, ice and compression have been the medical establishment's answer to pain and soreness when in reality, movement is most often the best medicine.
