I'm Sarah Weiler, TEDx Speaker, coach and creative multi-passionate. I'm fascinated by how we navigate quitting and the uncomfortable feeling that come up when we entertain bringing things to a close.
In this podcast…
I’ll talk to entrepreneurs, ex-politicians, athletes and PhD students who all have one thing in common – they all at some point wanted to quit the thing they cared about. They’ll share how they made the decision and impart wisdom for others in similar situations.
We’ll hear from experts about their take on quitting through the lens of intuition, natural cycles and start-up ideation.
And I’ll be coaching people LIVE on their current quitting issues and guiding them to either make a decision, or embrace the uncomfortable uncertainty…
This is the podcast for anyone who has ever wanted to quit and not known what to do - I hope you'll find solace, permission, relief and in seeing yourself in others' stories.
I believe that quitting is a skill that we can understand better and even master. If we allow it, quitting really is the facilitator of joy.

Today we're talking to Sieske Valk about the difficult, and often avoided part of pet ownership - the end of their life.
Sieske is an End of Life Doula and an advocate for ageing pets; She guides pet guardians through the autumn of their best friend's life.
Combining a background in veterinary medicine and the social sciences, she has set up Autumn Animals to support people in maintaining a good quality of life for both their pets and themselves and to hold space for celebrating the human-animal bond until the end and beyond.
In this episode we discuss:
Sieske and I also met 8 months after the recording with an update on Autumn Animals - I wanted to include this as it's a really interesting discussion about taking a pause from a business venture in order to recharge. This doesn't mean the project is over, it is actually the opposite!

I am so excited about today's episode, which is part 1 of a 2 part series with Dr Jude Galea - she's an A+E doctor of 20 years, the founder of the Witchy Women platform - and host the of the podcast Dr Body Mind Soul, both of which help people inform themselves about alternative therapies away from western medicine. Jude is changing the conversation about medicine and is in the process going through a big personal transformation with her identity as a doctor.
The episode you're going to hear today was recorded exactly a year ago in May 2022 when Jude was taking a break from being an A+E doctor and living in Mexico, setting up her business.
At this point a year ago she's very much still weighing up whether she should leave the medical profession and can see pros and cons for both leaving and staying.
In next week's episode we will see where she has got to one year on in terms of the decision to leave.
The process of putting these two episodes side by side really highlights to me just how hard the decision to quit can be. It's rarely an overnight decision, it's complex and it can take a lot of processing.
Thank you, Jude for sharing your story and allowing us to accompany you in your exploration of what it means for you to quit or remain in the medical profession.
I know Jude is sharing this episode on her podcast too, so if you're listening there. Welcome to this very special two part episode of Knowing When to Quit.
In this episode we discuss:
🩺 Jude's relationship with being 'a doctor' and why she decided to be a doctor in the first place
🛑 When she first wanted to quit medicine
🥳 What medicine HAS given her over the years and why she's stayed
🧙♀️Jude's exploration of alternative therapies and what she's doing to change the narrative
💜 What we mean by 'healing' and how the body works naturally
🌱 Jude's experience with plant medicine and how it's informed her decision to leave

Today's show I have the wonderful Selina Barker - life design and career change coach, the author of Burnt Out, and founder of 'Project You' and the Hello 2023 Goodbye 2022 journal series.
Selina was my entry point into designing a life I loved when I took her course back in 2013, and so it was a wonderful full circle to have her on the pod today.
In this episode we discuss:
🔥How we sometimes have to quit the big dream we've had for our careers
💜 Why quitting is a really important part of designing a life we love
😴 The importance of taking a proper break between projects (inspired by her 7 year old son!)
☕️ Why everyone thinks they want to work in a café (or be a potter)
📚 The reality of getting a book published - the highs and lows
✍️ Why Selina ended up self-publishing and advice for wannabe authors
Listen out at the end for a free guide that you can download, which I am happy to say was inspired by this conversation about whether to wait for a publisher. Selina said 'why wait for a book deal when I can enjoy writing it now and can share it straight away. And I have LOVED the process.'

Emily is a secondary school teacher in Yorkshire and when we met a few months ago she was really grappling with whether to stay in the profession. She was exhausted from the workload, the children and the families and was wondering if this was the right job for her.
As many of you know, I also started my career in teaching and have recently returned to education to coach teachers. In this episode you'll listen to a coaching session between me and Emily where we explore what she wants out of a job and whether she can really be her authentic self in the classroom. I'm really grateful to Emily for allowing listeners a chance to listen to this conversation.
For some context this was the first time we'd had a coaching session together, but we had had two conversations beforehand.
The coaching style I use is mainly based on the Co-Active Model and the coaching session is unedited apart from a few pauses that we have shortened for brevity.

Today is a biggie.
Have you ever changed your life so much that you feel like you're completely starting over again? Today's guest, Rob Grundel has done just that. After 12 years of living in London and building a life there, Rob said goodbye to the people, communities and projects he'd built and returned to Australia with his family. While in London Rob started the music community Imaginary Millions, ran his leadership coaching consultancy Somekind and was pastor for a small Christian community. He is now living in Australia with his family and is currently a principal at business storytelling community Anecdote.
Shortly after returning home to Oz he also decided to quit the church he was part of. Stripped back from all of his identities, Rob is now asking himself 'who am I now?' And 'is there a way I don't have to identify quite so deeply with the things I create in the future?'
This is an incredibly powerful episode, which will get everyone wondering, who would I be without all the things in my life? For anyone who's ever found themselves starting again, this is for you.
In this episode we discuss:

PART 2: QUITTING THE CHURCH

In today's episode I'm talking to Emma Sexton - an entrepreneur, marketing specialist, design thinker and creative doer.
I met Emma back in 2016 when I was running a Female Founders Accelerator and she was working at the Kings Accelerator as Creative Expert in Residence. Back then we talked a lot about our love of starting ventures and knowing when to fold them. Emma has in the past run a successful radio show, taken women on regular trade missions to New York as well as bootstrapping a really successful creative agency - called Hands Down.
In the summer of 2022 Emma made the decision to SUNSET her creative agency after 10 years, when she was really close to turning over her goal of 1 million pounds revenue.
In this episode Emma share's honestly about how she made the decision to close the business, the weight of running a big business, and the backdrop of her father's terminal illness, which helped her reassess what was really important.
Emma is so knowledgeable about the world of entrepreneurship and for anyone wondering whether quitting a business is the right thing for them, you're going to love this episode.
We discuss:
Thanks for coming on the show, Emma.

When I first thought about this podcast, I knew that I didn't just want to talk about jobs + businesses. Today, I have my dear friend, arts psychotherapist, and wise wise woman Zaira Mughal on the podcast sharing about her divorce.
It's a deep, honest episode about the cultural, societal and emotional reasons we hold on to relationships, even if all the signs are there that it is over.
What Zaira has gone on to do since her divorce though, is truly remarkable.
For anyone, who is feeling totally lost in life, this episode is full of hope. Zaira took the darkest moments of her life and learned to love herself, and is committed to helping others do the same. Thank you, Zaira for sharing your story with the world - you are a total inspiration.
In this episode we explore:
Zaira is a trainee Arts Psychotherapist, Therapeutic Arts Coach & Facilitator, and Energy healer. Her personal philosophy is that you contain a Life force that is extraordinarily creative, and is longing to express itself. When you choose to ignite your creative life force, your potential becomes exponential.
Zaira works with the arts, somatic practices, breathwork, visualisations and trauma-informed techniques to navigate life challenges, activate your imagination towards what is possible, and unleash new possibilities for living your potential.

The place you feel the most resistance is the most important place for your soul's evolution...
In today's episode we look at the other side of quitting: NOT quitting.
Whenever we start a new project, habit or venture there is a part of us that is screaming to give up. How do we know if this is fear talking or a voice we should listen to? How do we keep going even if we're feeling a lot of resistance? What if we don't feel like we are a real (insert word) writer/creative/musician/poet yet?
My guest today, Robbie Swale, developed a simple, 12-minute a week, writing habit over 6 years, which has ended up changing his life. In this episode he'll share what he's learned from this process and how you can get started too.
Robbie Swale is a leadership coach, author and podcaster whose work focuses on creativity, leading with honour and the craft of coaching.
He is the host of two podcasts – The Coach’s Journey Podcast and The 12-Minute Method Podcast – and the author of The 12-Minute Method series of books, including How to Start When You’re Stuck and How to Create the Conditions for Great Work.

Ooof! This is a big topic today, and one we've been wanting to put out for a while.
Between our mid 30s and mid 40s most women are preoccupied with a big decision - whether or not to have children. The decision is complicated: while it's partly in our hands, it's also, in many ways totally not.
We wanted to have a frank discussion about what it means to be in this time of deliberation, how we personally navigate the uncertainty, and the opportunity we have to build a new narrative for childfree women.

TW: suicide and grief
In 2008 Tiffany Philippou returned to university, having lost her boyfriend to suicide over the summer. For the next decade she kept herself busy with work, love and London - anything to take her mind off facing her grief.
Now, 14 years on, she's written a memoir documenting her 20s and the journey she went on to stop pretending that things were 'totally fine.' It's brave, raw and honest and a reminder for anyone grieving that it's okay to ask for help.
In this final episode of 2022 we discuss:
⛑ What did mental health support look like in 2008?
💊 What Tiffany did to try and numb the grief.
🗣 The importance of talking about things to reduce the shame.
📖 The process of writing a memoir including calling up people from your past to tell them you've written about them!
🫀 We also discuss quitting more generally including knowing when to quit a relationship, listening to doubts and knowing the difference between 'this is just hard' and 'I know in my bones this is not right.'
🚀 I share the framework I use to decide if a quitting decision is based on flight, fight or freeze.
😐 We discuss if anyone has ever regretted quitting and whether the desire to quit should always be trusted?

''When we thinking nothing is happening. A LOT is happening.'' - Sam Moyo Welcome to SERIES 2 of Knowing When to Quit! We're so excited to have you back here. This week I'm speaking to Samantha Moyo: Founder of Morning Gloryville (MGV), Creative Coach and Consultant, and as of this summer Shambala Festival's favourite cowgirl. If you don't know MGV, it was a revolutionary sober rave movement, which got people up at 6am to dance to the likes of Fatboy Slim before work. It had huge success all over the globe, and yet, there will always be moments in a start-up's story where the founder asks, 'is this still working for me?' In this honest interview, Sam shares what led her to want to move away from MGV; how the abrupt end shed light on the outdated systems in place; and how she's determined to make sure the world of business changes for the better. In this conversation we discuss: 🏡 Non-binary thinking, not just in gender and sexuality but in where we choose to live 🧘🏽♀️The importance of sitting in the fertile void in order for an idea to emerge 🔮 Being a futurist and how it comes from sensitivity ❤️ The changes Sam wanted to see in the world when she set up MGV 🚺 Menstruation in the workplace - what is changes and where we still have work to do 🔥 How the difficult end to MGV revealed the truth about the systemic change that needs to happen in business, and what it's fuelled in her since 🌳 The things that helped Sam get through her post-MGV time Please note there is swearing on this episode, in case you are playing it in front of littles :) Sam's website - https://www.samanthamoyo.co.uk/ Sam's IG - @mysticmoyo Knowing When to Quit - Instagram - @knowingwhentoquit Podcast homepage - www.sarahweiler.com/podcast/ Editor - Johnny Hall / Music - Sarah Weiler / Artwork - Tom Pauling This was recorded in October 2022 in person WANT TO SUPPORT THIS PODCAST? There was a deeper, bigger, issue within me.’ This week we talk to Vicky Johnson - Co-founder & Director at the Museum of Happiness, an organisation which uses the Science of Happiness to spread more love, peace and happiness into the world. You'd imagine that to run a Museum of Happiness you'd have to have a pretty sunny disposition, and you wouldn't be wrong. Vicky is one of the most positive people I've worked with - uber-resilient and full of the joys of life. And yet, the uncertainty of running a start-up combined with a job that focuses on supporting others with their well-being eventually took it's toll on her own mental health. In this episode Vicky shares how on 3 separate occasions she was ready to walk away for the Museum of Happiness, and how each time it forced her to go deeper into her internal world to resource herself and understand what was really going on. This is an honest account of burning out, facing up to the mud and coming out the other side with the tools, wisdom and humanity to lead the organisation of her dreams.
In this episode we discuss: 🤗 The success of Museum of Happiness and how their first happiness event went viral ✋ The 3 times in the journey of the start up that she really wanted to quit 📞 Moving away from ‘I’m the helper / I’m the teacher’ and getting support 🚪 The turmoil of two of their venues closing in quick succession 🏆 Being nominated as one of the top 100 community leaders in the world by Facebook and how meeting other founders changed her perspective. 🏝 The difference between needing a holiday and actually taking some proper time off to return 🤫 Meeting the Dalai Lama straight after Vipassana(!) and what 10 days of silence taught her ❤️ How she used to run the organisation when she was burned out and how she’s put self-care at the heart of organisation now 🥳 How upping the volume on the joy can help combat stress 🗣 How Vicky has sharpened her ability to say NO Links: Museum of Happiness Facilitator Training - https://www.museumofhappiness.org/teach Happier World Club - https://www.museumofhappiness.org/happy-world-club Knowing When to Quit - Instagram - @knowingwhentoquit Podcast homepage - www.sarahweiler.com/podcast/ Editor - Johnny Hall / Music - Sarah Weiler / Artwork - Tom Pauling This was recorded in May 2021 WANT TO SUPPORT THIS PODCAST? ‘’This person said to me - if you want to progress, you need to learn to not cry.’’ Hannah is Head of Compliance at Lockton, an insurance broker and a trustee and board director of Ella’s, a charity works with women who have survived trafficking and sexual exploitation. In this conversation we explore Hannah’s professional conundrum - she longs to be a role-model for women in her industry to show them it is possible to be in a position of leadership and have a family, yet she is frustrated with the slow changes in gender equality and the battles she faces on a daily basis at work. She isn’t sure she can stay much longer in the system, not to mention the other parts of herself she wants to explore - baking, being in nature; just BEING. How can she show up for these women and also show up for herself? In this episode we explore: Hannah’s frustrations with gender equality in the corporate world. People being surprised that someone at her level is married with kids. How the skills that people learn being new parents should be seen as transferable skills in the workplace. Do we always have to affect change from within an organisation? Or are there other ways to influence change? How it’s still not okay for women to be emotional at work. Having open conversations about menopause, menstrual cycles with colleagues at work and building workplaces around the menstrual cycle. The financial logistics when transitioning from a career to running your own project and how to start taking by small steps. Bringing more 'being' into the day-to-day.

''IT'S THE CY-CLE, THE CYCLE OF LIFE!'' Vix Anderton is an embodiment coach, cyclical living and authenticity maven who guides overdoers, overthinkers and recovering perfectionists to reconnect with their authenticity and resilience. She's had a fascinating career starting in the RAF, then the corporate world, and now she runs her thriving coaching business from sunny Bali. Her knowledge of cyclical living has supported me no-end in understanding the rhythms of my business and life. In this episode she'll share how cyclical living is everywhere, and especially how it helps us to tune into our natural sense of when it's time to quit even though the dominant culture says otherwise. She says: ‘’The more positive view of quitting is: ‘I’ve felt everything there is to feel, I’ve really listened to myself and I’m making a decision from capital S self. I’m not triggered, I’m not playing out an old childhood pattern. I’m a fully capable adult saying ‘I’ve reached the end of this cycle and it’s time for me to move on and do something else.’’ In this episode we discuss: Quitting the Airforce - why she left and how she approached leaving Why the empty space or 'winter' post quitting is so important and our reluctance to go there How everything has a cycle - even conversations! Why you shouldn’t do business marketing when you’re pre-menstrual All about Autumn (the letting go phase) and how to build it into your day The importance of building in reflection time and space into business Rituals for letting go (which may or may not include Taylor Swift) Is there a thing as too much winter? Realistic Minimums with cycle living and how to not be a perfectionist about it My own reflections of a mini-winter I took with this podcast

''SOMETIMES YOU GOTTA BE A LITTLE BIT AWESOME'' ‘Every single day something good happens in my life because of Project Awesome, not because I’m involved in it now, but because I was involved in it then.’ This week I talk to the unstoppable force that is Danny Bent (@danny_bent). He's an adventurer, happiness guru, storyteller and all-round good human. In 2014 he set up a high-energy running club - Project Awesome- promising badass workouts, high 5s and free hugs at 6:30am. Very quickly hundreds of people (including me!) were gathering to run over Tower Bridge with the sunrise and then scheme great adventures during the post-workout coffee. So many lives were changed, yet behind the scenes Danny was burning out. A difficult predicament arose - as a founder of a community impacting so many people's lives, did he even have the right to quit? In this episode Danny bravely shares: How and why he made the decision to step away from such a thriving community How he was experiencing life day to day during the worst time and what was enabled in his life once he quit The loss of identity when you stand down from leading a community and how to cope with the sudden free time Quitting in sport - how you know when to push on and when to call it a day Danny’s advice for how to quit a passion project/community when it feels unthinkable to step down

EPISODE 1 IS HERE! 'The News is Alive with the Sound of Quitting... aaaaah!' In 2017 I put a call out for people to share their quitting stories with me. People were shocked that I was bringing this 'brave' and 'out-there' topic into the world. They DM'd me on the sly with their confessions about times they wanted to quit, or shared their relief of when they did. Quitting was still a guilty secret. Fast forward to 2022 and Quitting is all the rage! The great resignation is upon us and Quitting is showing up in every newspaper, magazine and podcast interview. The world is ready for this podcast! In this first episode I'm interviewed by my wonderful coach Kate Taylor, who is helping me bring the themes of this podcast and my own Quitting journey to life. Listen to the whole thing over a cuppa, or skip to the bits you want like the true short-attention-span millennial you are.
