The ego lives in scarcity. What are the implications of this, and how do we adapt?
Free will is not a binary function, it's a scale.
If you do not make a conscious choice, you are defaulting to your subconscious, ego-driven choice.
Your experience of life, as interpreted by your ego, has very little to do with your objective circumstances.

Just like hot and cold are points along a spectrum - identical in nature, different in degree or volume.
Likewise the subconscious, ego, higher self, etc. are all consciousness, just of varying degrees from various perspectives.

Your beliefs - the underlying assumptions you make about who you are, how reality works, your relationship to time and space, and so on, define the ways that your thoughts, feelings, and actions will manifest. What do you believe, and why?
If you don't make a conscious choice, you are defaulting to your subconscious instinct. Choosing not to choose is a choice.

Working out and growth, in general, aren't necessarily good, and smoking and death or decline, in general, aren't necessarily bad.
You must have a personal vision or commitment in order to determine the fruitfulness of any particular path.
Judgments of self or others cause stress, anxiety, conflict, etc., which ironically perpetuate unfavorable behaviors.
So if you want to start creating actual lasting change in your mindset, emotions, thoughts, and life, you need to evolve beyond the dogmatic judgments of good vs bad, accept what is, and commit to values that energize you.

All things are transforming, nothing in nature is complete. Any judgment that something is perfect or complete is just a subjective declaration. It’s perfectly human to make these judgments, that’s what our subconscious is designed to do, but it makes life much more stressful and hurts your work. If we realize and accept that the nature of life itself is imperfection / incompletion, then we open the doors to a more fruitful life and, ironically, better work.
By all means, strive to be great and produce great work, but don't get emotionally or energetically tangled up in trying to make everything perfect for everyone. That will only make your work less authentic, less true, and less “perfect”.
