In this show, Dennis discusses issues related to the Church, the Bible, Theology, and culture and often there's a lot of overlap between all of those issues.
People are often confused about our relationship with the Law of Moses. Some Christians even believe we are still "under the Law" even though there are over half a dozen verses that say the exact opposite. In this episode Dennis tries to explain some of what the Law of Moses is, who is under it, and why it was given in the first place.

In the story two men, the hero and the villain, are both searching for God. The villain finds God in himself; he is God and his own savior. This turns him in to a Nebuchadnezzar-like, evil tyrant. Dr. Michael McKay is the Director of Online Graduate Programs and Assistant Professor of Biblical Theology at Cedarville University. Dr. McKay joined the faculty at Cedarville University in the fall of 2017 after serving as a trainer for missionary candidates for nine years. When we hear the phrase "the wrath of God" we usually conjure up images of fire and brimstone; end times type stuff. This isn't to say the Bible doesn't speak to that kind of wrath. We as Christians talk an awful lot about the Gospel which is a good thing since it's the very message we're called upon to proclaim. But when we're asked to articulate the Gospel are we able to do so? Can we explain what the message is? What a person needs to believe in order to come to know God and grow in his or her walk with Him? We tend to think that it is our job as Christians to save the world. This leads us to think in much grander ways about how to go about accomplishing this task. We seek to "bring in the kingdom" through legislative means, through progressive policies, through Christian nationalism, etc. etc.
However, Jesus says the world will hate us. It's never going to welcome us as saviors and deliverers. With that in mind, should we be focused on trying to save the world like many in the world are attempting to do so? Or does the Great Commission and the Church have a different mandate? One that is much smaller and involves friendships, evangelism, and discipleship?

It's shocking to see how bad our culture is at forming and maintaining deep, intimate friendships. Social media, obviously, convinces us that we have a LOT of friends but studies show people are more isolated and have less friends than they did thirty years ago.
Unfortunately this crisis is mirrored in the Church; the very place where relationships should thrive the most. The life of Christ and the fruit of the Spirit are lived out in relationships. How can we expect to have solid, mature Christian lives if we don't even know how to form godly friendships? Pastors and church leaders must address this issue if we desire to break ranks with our culture in a central area of human existence.

In our pursuit of excitement and the "mountaintop experiences" of the Christian life we have taught people that the "high" of Christianity is what the norm should be. Certainly, God does exciting things in our lives and those times are awesome. As we wrap up the book of James we see that he finishes with what he started the book with; a call to endure in suffering and to respond in a godly manners. Sometimes we suffer from sin and we need prayer but sometimes we just grumble and complain about it. Either way, we need to reject those modes of responding to suffering a walk with God in faith and obedience. Lastly James encourages us to not only look to ourselves in our walk but to keep an eye on those around us who may be suffering and to steer them back to Christ if wee see them pursuing world ways of dealing with hardships.

We have this policy in our culture and in our churches especially that we shouldn't "should" on people and shame them for their negative (or lack of positive) behavior. All forms of judgments like this are wrong. Ignore the fact that telling someone they "should not" "should" on people is a form of "shoulding" (if I can use a made up word). However, there is a cultural and societal justification for shaming and stigmatizing people, or at least their behavior. The primary reason is to protect the community for destructive behaviors or actions. Paul discusses this very concept in 1 Corinthians 5 and this is the issue we want to tackle in this episode.

If you have been living under a rock within the Christian community you may not have heard that there is a revival that has broken out in Wilmore, KY at Asbury College. It started as, what sounds like, a normal chapel service last Wednesday (February 8th) but has continued non-stop since then, almost a week later. It’s garnered the attention of the Christian community around the world and even secular news has been reporting on it as people have travelled from all over to get a glimpse of what God is doing there in northern Kentucky. I am happy to be joined by Josiah Gardiner who graduated from Asbury College in this past December with a worship arts degree and an audio production minor. He currently works at Georgetown Church of the Nazarene which is about 45 minutes away from Asbury College, the epicenter for all of this craziness. Josiah has visited Asbury a couple times since this work of God has broke out and I'm happy to be able to hear from him to hear what he's seen and experienced.

She has starred in the film "Dinosaur Cove" and is currently working as a Brand Ambassador for the upcoming film "Not Too Far From Here." This film, which begins shooting this May, is a faith-based film about how one woman finds hope after experiencing domestic violence in her life. As a brand ambassador, Emily's role is one of doing promotion for the film and specifically promoting merchandise for the movie and all of the proceeds go towards funding for victims of domestic violence.

In this episode we near the end of the book of James as the author tackles another way we try to get out of suffering, sometimes without God's help. We often try to make plans to make money, find security or identity, or just simply make life easier. That's totally fine! God wants us to have plans. However, He does not want us to have plans that DONT include Him. Let's make sure we're consulting God when we make plans or else we may find ourselves "successful" but having traded away a part of our soul to get there

Dr. David Diener grew up in northern Michigan and northeast Ohio where he spent his childhood working in the family gardens, cutting wood, playing in corn fields, Bible quizzing, downhill skiing, playing music, and of course studying assiduously in school. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Ancient Languages from Wheaton College. He then moved with his wife to Bogotá, Colombia, where they served as missionaries for three years at a Christian international school. He then earned an MA in Philosophy, an MS in History and Philosophy of Education, and a dual PhD in Philosophy and Philosophy of Education from Indiana University. Matt Walsh, conservative podcaster, political commentator, and author recently tweeted about how he would not trust any man who isn't blood related to baby sit his kids (he did clarify, later, that close family friends do count as family and are to be trusted). So while this isn't a critique per se of his thoughts (I would agree with his conclusion about family friends) I did want to respond to what I believe is the sentiment of many people, even Christians, expressed in the initial tweet. Many Christians trust and privilege their blood family over the family of God. Why is that? And what can the Church do to reemphasize this idea of the family of God?

It seems like we're facing in impasse as a Christian culture. The Church is struggling to stay afloat in America and Christians are faced with the call to radical commitment to the Body of Christ and the Great Commission on one hand and the lure of the world system on the other. All too often Christians choose the latter and find out there simply is not time left over for the things of God. Is this a minor issue or does the future of the Church, in America at least, hinge on which direction we as Christians choose to go?

When we suffer it is easy to look inward and think, "What do I want? What will make me feel better?" Then we think we can pray to God and He will just give us whatever it is that we think we need or want. However, God has desires too. We ought, instead, to look to God's wishes and desires when we are suffering and ask Him to provide those things for us.

The world is moving more and more on to the internet and as it does so deception seems to be increasing. It's impossible to know what is true and what is "fake news." This shouldn't be surprising. Jesus told us 2,000 years ago that near the end of time, right before his second coming, there would be a massive amount of deception that will lead the whole world astray. Are we edging closer and closer to that reality with the onset of AI technology?

James makes it abundantly clear that when we are suffering and have an opportunity to grow, that is the time we need to look to God for wisdom. In fact, wisdom is central to growing as a Christian. However, there is a wisdom from below, that is, earthly wisdom and there is a wisdom from above that comes from God. James gives us a litmus test to determine the source of the wisdom we're following in this section.

This passage in the book of James is often misunderstood and has caused a lot of confusion in Christianity and in the presentation of the Gospel. Paul makes it clear that we're saved by faith apart from works but then James comes along and says, seemingly, the exact opposite! How do we square this circle? This teaching shows that we AREN'T supposed to try to fit James in to Paul or Paul in to James because they're talking about two TOTALLY different aspects of the Christian life.

In doing so we need to understand that God has a purpose to our walk with Him. Serving people is at the core of Christianity and not just empty words. Serving people also takes place in community and we must avoid building community on standards that the world system values like wealth and prestige

When we're in the midst of suffering it becomes easier to question the goodness and character of God. James is encouraging us to turn to God rather than away from Him. In the moments when hardships come we have a rock solid identity in Christ that we need to rely on and trust that God who loved us in the good times loves us still when things seem to be going sideways.

In this episode I am responding to a clip from an older episode of Jordan Peterson's podcast where he discusses why a family meal is so important. It's in those communal meals where our "stories" are updated. It's where we are able to practice love with those closest to us.
This is a practice and a skill that is so important and must be learned even before marriage. It's a basic relational skill that serves us in discipleship as well. In discipleship we live life with the person we are mentoring and this involves regular times of hanging out, be it at a meal, playing games, getting coffee, or just doing mundane things like going grocery shopping.

This episode I speak about how trust in our institutions has been lost, maybe irrevocably. The movie "Don't Look Up" illustrates this brilliantly. We can no longer trust the Government, Social Media, Corporate Press, the Entertainment business, or the scientific community. The Regime has lost our trust.
We as Christians and the Church as a whole need to learn from this valuable lesson. We have also lost our trust and credibility but the consequences for us is of eternal importance.

In this episode I discuss some of the thoughts I've been having about the nature of forgiveness and what the Bible actually teaches on the topic. An article came out last month in the Atlantic on possibly granting Covid Amnesty to the parties involved in the handling of Covid these last two years. Is that a good idea? How does repentance play a role in forgiveness? Can forgiveness even be extended if there isn't repentance and a recognition of a wrong committed? How do we go about giving and accepting apologies?

EXPLICIT CONTENT WARNING AROUND THE 43:35 MARK
In this episode I respond to a few clips from the very popular episode of the Joe Rogan Experience that aired this week with Matt Walsh. They discuss the topic of marriage for quite a while and they are discussion what is marriage? What defines marriage? It doesn't seem like they ever come to an agreement and this is likely because they don't agree on an objective, underlying Truth that defines marriage for us.
This, more than anything, highlights why we are so divided in our country. We are arguing about issues and policies and we don't have an objective truth that is self-evident undergirding our discussions. As a result, everything becomes subjective.

How does God, who is infinitely knowledgable, communicate truth to people like us who are finite? This episode discusses how we can understand, in very limited ways, how higher order beings would be hard pressed to interact with us in ways we can understand. How much more an infinite God?
Some of the language the Bible uses is imprecise language used by God to communicate, in the best possible way, to us humans who simply experience reality differently than God does.

In this episode I wanted to respond to a clip from a recent Joe Rogan episode where he and comedian/podcaster Dave Smith discuss religion. They get in to the topic of Christianity and why they believe it, and religion in general, is made fun of. They zero in on Christianity and make a few assumptions about what Christianity teaches that I feel help contribute to the caricature of Christianity.
I don't believe either one of them are being malicious in their comments and feel they are being very fair. Some of their comments, however, seem to be made in ignorance and are simply common assumptions made about what the Bible teaches and how we ought to interpret some stuff in the Bible

Conservatives, and Conservative Christians as well, tend to have a reactionary, knee-jerk response to anything that smacks of "Wokism." Our culture is steeped in racism and bigotry that masquerades as "Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion." Conservatives, on the other hand, promote judging things and people on individual merit and NOT by their group, be it sexuality, gender, or race.
All too often, however, when Hollywood puts out a movie or show and they cast someone from a so-called "oppressed minority" then conservatives protest and refuse to see the film or show. This, however, is just playing the progressive game and refusing to watch something because there aren't white people in it.
Apple TV's show "Foundation" could easily fall prey to that thinking as they cast two black females in the lead roles. If, however, conservatives watch it they may find that the actual message and themes of the show promote highly conservative messages like the value of freedom, liberty, and the value of motherhood.

What is faith? It seems like this should be an easy answer but many people answer this question differently. Of course the Bible has a lot to say on the topic and our salvation is vitally linked to the nature of faith. What do different Christians believe about faith? Is it as complicated as theologians, pastors, and religious people make it out to be?

Christians often debate issues of the Rapture and the Second Coming of Christ by pointing to verses in the Bible and claiming "See! It's so obvious that the Rapture is [insert belief here]!" What is really going on, however, is that all students of the End Times have presuppositions and biases that cause them to read those verses through a certain lens.
The Pre-Trib Rapture View is no different. The premise that has been popularized by "Left Behind," that Jesus will come back, invisibly, before the Tribulation and disappear all Christians, leaving behind just their clothes, is built upon a massive infrastructure of presuppositions. But what if those beliefs are wrong? Does the entire view come crashing down?

Like any modern invention of the internet, TikTok is a tool that can be used for good as well as evil. In Duncan's case it was the avenue in which God met him and eventually brought him to faith in Christ.
Having grown up in the Catholic Church, nominally attending as a child, Duncan never knew what it meant to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. After a time as a prodigal in college he eventually saw a video on TikTok of a young lady sharing about the love of Christ. It was through that video that he reached out to learn more, began attending a bible study over Zoom, and eventually gave his heart and life to Christ.
Now Duncan is inspired to share his faith with others through content creations. He makes videos on TikTok showcasing his faith in Christ and is pursuing a career in writing and singing country music that is filled with the message of the Gospel.

The Netflix series "Dahmer" gives a dark look in to the life and crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer. His story, as dark and monstrous as it was, gives us a look in to the darkness of sin. How sin can distort a person and take them down horrifying paths that seem incomprehensible. However, it also shows the grace of God and how even God can forgive a person as sinful as Dahmer.

There has been a long standing belief in Christianity that women are forbidden to be in a position of leadership within the Church; much of this is rooted in 1 Timothy 2:11-14. In the recent decades, however, there has been a push for women to be in positions of church leadership as equality in the sexes has become the norm. This has created a divide in the Church over some segments who believe we've "progressed" beyond male-only leadership and other segments that want to be faithful to what they believe the Bible is teaching.
Maybe there is a better way to look at 1 Timothy 2:11-14 that helps address the call of women to lead in the Church but also addresses the concerns of the Christians who desire to be faithful to God's Word.
Maybe this passage has a much more reasonable interpretation; one that fits the context of the passage as well as the scope of the New Testament context of women leading in the Church.

A lot of people doubt whether there is going to be some future period of Tribulation that is going to last for seven years. Some of their doubt and skepticism comes from people who are obsessed with biblical prophecy and make outlandish claims and find fulfilled prophecy in every news headline.

The Bible is kind of a wacky book with some stuff that is hard for people to believe. What if there were things in the Bible that were verifiable and could prove that God is who He says He is and that the Bible is God's Word? As it turns out there is such a thing in the Bible. It's called predictive prophecy and God even says that He will use prophecy to prove who He is and that He exists.
Daniel 9 is an excellent predictive prophecy that is so incredible it is almost hard to believe. Your initial response is to think there must be some trickery involved. It does take some time to understand the context of the prophecy but the prophecy itself is quite simple.
The Church must take the time to learn about evidences for God's word, evidence like Daniel 9, in order to encourage Christians that the Bible can be trusted but also as proof to unbelievers that God is real.

Communion has been incredibly misunderstood throughout Church history. From the Protestant perspective it has been the Catholics who have butchered the meaning of the ritual and twisted it in to something it was never intended. From the Catholic perspective it is the Protestants who have degraded and ignored the doctrines that are central to Communion. Maybe there is some truth to both perspectives.

Why does God always get blamed when bad things happen? It's a bizarre phenomenon in human nature but it seems to be fairly universal. When good things happen God doesn't get the glory; it was our own human ingenuity and success. When bad things happen, however, He seems to get all the blame and we are innocent of the matter.
The Old Testament Books of Proverbs and Amos both have a message that addresses the flaws in this way of thinking.

We are told that as Christians we can have a confident expectation, a hope, of spending eternity with God. But Jesus said a good tree cannot produce bad fruit. How do we inspect "good and bad fruit" and still come away being confident that we know the Lord? It would seem that an honest fruit inspector would despair everytime he or she sees a "bad fruit" when Jesus said a good tree DOES NOT produce bad fruit.

This teaching on the infamous passage of the Bible, James 2:14-26, was given as a live stream on TikTok. It is important to understand this section of scripture accurately because a lot of misconceptions exist surrounding it and some of those are quite damaging to the Gospel of Grace.
"Am I really saved?"
"How do I know?"
"How many good works do I need?"
"WHICH good works do I need?"
"What if I don't have the right amount? Am I going to hell?"
Maybe you've wrestled with all of these questions. The problem is many of those doubts arise from viewing James 2:14-26 through this traditional lens that says, "If you REALLY believe then you will have good works."
This episode views this passage in a different light and one that leaves you as a Christian being more confident in your walk with God and the role good works play in strengthening your faith.

Did you know that in Greek there are such things as 3rd person imperatives??? Me neither! We don't have these in English. Usually if I command you to do something (1st person) then that makes sense. "You, listen to this podcast" is a 1st person command. In Greek there can be third person commands where I command someone else to do something other than you, as the listener.

Our world is starved for wisdom. Politicians and world leaders make decisions that seem insanely foolish and people are suckered in by them. The book of Proverbs talks about different kinds of fools but the most innocent and most common type of fool is the "Peti." This Hebrew word just means naive or simple minded. Kids are this way; so gullible they will believe anything.
We as adults can (and do) behave this way all too often as well. Proverbs can give us wisdom on how to avoid pitfalls in life and the great thing is God promises to give us wisdom if we ask Him for it.

The Christian Post recently reported on a sermon from famous prosperity gospel preacher Creflo Dollar in which he admitted he was wrong and has changed his opinion on tithing. Dollar admits that tithing is a teaching of the Old Covenant law and is not applicable to New Covenant Christians.
This episode doesn't so much focus on the issue of tithing (Dollar speaks to that in his sermon here) but rather this episode discusses how God can change a person and how it takes incredible humility to admit that we were wrong when He does change us. This is what Creflo Dollar does on this issue of tithing and I thought it was appropriate to highlight that humility.

We live in a globalized world and this fact has made the world much smaller. Whenever a terrible thing happens on the other side of the world we panic cause it feels like it is happening right outside our door, in our local community. But is this the way we should view tragic news stories?
What about church scandals? We see them more and more but does a scandal in a church in Kentucky really change how I live for the Lord here in Michigan (or wherever you may live)? Whose job is it to walk among the local churches and worry about sin and reward faithfulness?

The New Testament teaches that Jesus "is our life" and that "it is no longer I who live but Christ lives in me." This is a deep truth that cuts to the core of what it means to live the Christian life. The Christian life is a living, dynamic relationship with a living Savior who dwells within us. However, all too often, we live the Christian life like Jesus is just a man who lived 2000 years ago that we try to emulate.

The holiday of Juneteenth is relatively new to many of us as it just became a federally recognized holiday in 2021. Before that many of us had never even heard of Juneteenth; now it's all over the place. The conservative impulse is to reject anything new whereas the progressive impulse is to accept anything that is new. Maybe wisdom should evaluate each new thing and either discard it or accept it.
With Juneteenth there may be some legitimate spiritual analogies we can focus on to help us, as Christians, to relate to the message of Juneteenth. Issues of slavery, freedom, and most importantly the knowledge that we ARE free.

Symbols have a way of bringing us together in that they represent truths. Truth, however, has a way of dividing as well. We see this clearly with the Gay Pride symbols as well as the MAGA Hat. These symbols mean something; there's an ideology behind them that some agree with and some despise.
Communion, the bread and wine, are also symbols. The Catholics believe that the bread and wine BECOME the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Is that true? What do these symbols represent? And have we lost our respect for symbols, even the symbol of Communion, and therefore lost the truths it represents?

In this episode Dennis discusses the world system and how Christians so easily get entangled in the world system. It's something that we ought to be more concerned about seeing as how the Bible tells us that if "anyone loves the world system then the love of the Father is not in him." That seems fairly serious.
The world system is set up by Satan to deceive us so how would we know if we were being deceived in to loving it? The answer is not readily apparent. For this reason most Christians do not plan to get ensnared by the world and walk far from God but, as Andy Stanley says, "they do not plan not to."
So in this episode Dennis discusses some of Watchman Nee's book "Love Not the World" and how Christians fall prey to the predations of the world system through how we use our finances to buy things of the world, how we choose lifestyles that can entangle us with the world, and even how we can trust in the State to save us when really the government is just a worldly instrument that is capable of great evils.

In this final lecture on biblical hermeneutics the topic of commentary and other biblical helps is discussed. These are helpful tools we can avail ourselves of but we need to recognize that these are just other human's opinions and are subject to error. There are helpful tips to keep in mind when we use them
There's also a need to remain humble in our use of hermeneutics. The fact of the matter is that having a good biblical hermeneutic will put you in a position that many in the Body of Christ don't have, namely, being able to accurately handle the word of God. Knowledge puffs up, however, and we need to keep love and unity as our central goal.

When studying the Bible, context is king. We often consider literary context such as genre when looking at a text but it is equally important to study the geographical context of a historical text as well. Where Israel is in relation the the rest of the world, for instance, plays a crucial role in how we interpret the events of the Bible. Where did Paul go on his missionary journeys and why were the routes he took significant? How does geography play a role when studying the ministry of Jesus? These are all questions that need to be considered when studying the geographical context of a passage.

In this episode Dennis discusses the issues surrounding abortion and the Roe v. Wade leak. He discusses why pro-choice and pro-life people disagree and presents the idea that the disagreement arises not so much over legal rulings but because of foundational disagreements that the two sides have. Any legal rulings that come down the pike will be reflective of those foundational beliefs and there will be disagreements over whichever way the Courts decide to go.
Will the country divide over this issue? The sad reality is that we actually are already divided. Ideologically we live in two different countries that hold different self-evident truths about what it means to be created, what constitutes life, and the unalienable valuable attributed to that life. Unless we can agree on those issues we will never resolve the pro-life/pro-choice debate.

In the book Walton discusses a different way of looking at Genesis one and how we ought to look at it as a recounting of ancient cosmology. It is a creation story told by God to an ancient culture IN an ancient culture. The ancient Jewish people did not view cosmology and creation stories in the same way as we as modern, scientific, materialists do and the difference is quite drastic. Walton discusses that in this book.
This episode is meant as a recommendation of the book, not necessarily an endorsement of everything in the book. Dennis makes the point that we as Christians may not need to have uniformity on everything we believe about Genesis one and the creation story but we do need to have open minds about the possibility that we don't understand everything surrounding this issue.

In this episode Dennis discusses the idea of unity in the Body of Christ. This unity is not something that we, as Christians, need to generate; it is something God has created. It is a part of our corporate identity.
Dennis discusses parallels between the unity in the Church with unity in a marriage and how both show a oneness created by God and that we dare not divide. He also discusses how unity must be a core value that we as Christians have otherwise we will end up fighting about lesser things, areas of disagreement, and we'll end up dividing in our immaturity.

In this episode Dennis is continuing his teaching on the book of Hebrews. In chapter 8 the author of the book of Hebrews is coming to the crux of his argument, namely, that of the New Covenant. In chapter 8 he discusses how the New Covenant is not like the Old Covenant.
The reason there was a need for a New Covenant was because the Old was ineffectual. There is a reason we can relate to God now, under the New Covenant. Dennis discusses why that is and why we desperately need to continue under the New and not revert to the Old Covenant.

This episode is a teaching Dennis gave at his local church on the book of Joel. In it he discusses how in the Old Testament book of Joel God sent a plague of locusts that utterly devastated the nation of Israel. He did this in part because they had forgotten that God is Who He says He is. The judgment on the nation was a reminder that God IS.
There are certain parallels today in that certain self-evident truths, namely that God is Creator and has endowed us with certain rights, are no longer self-evident. We as a culture have forgotten that God IS. Like the people of Israel in Joel's time, when judgment comes it will be quite sudden.

In Hebrews 6 we have one of the most misunderstood verses in the New Testament. A verse that appears to threaten a person with the loss of their salvation. Dennis walks through the chapter and explains what this verse actually means in light of the surrounding context.
The entire chapter, however, is an exhortation for believers to move on to maturity and move beyond elementary teachings of the faith.

This episode is a continuation of a teaching through the book of Hebrews. In chapter 5 Dennis talks about the issue of Jesus being our high priest. This isn't an issue we think about too much these days because the concept of a priesthood, much more like a hierarchy of politics, is not something we relate to in our worship of God.
But the Hebrews in the first century DID relate to God that way. That is how they viewed access to God. The position of the high priest was integral to being able to come to God. No high priest, no access to God.

In this episode Dennis is continuing his teaching on the book of Hebrews. One of the central points in the book is that we are no longer under the Old Covenant. Under the Law we were required to work, work, work, and this is because the atoning for sins was never finished.
Hebrews, however, tells us that "Jesus sat down" at the right hand of the Father. His work was finished. He rested.
We, as followers of God, are called to cease from our work and to enter in to that finished work of Jesus Christ.

In this teaching on Hebrews chapter 3 Dennis discusses the issue of looking to Christ and his faithfulness. In the book of Hebrews that Israelite people were going back to the Old Covenant Law which was inherently a problem because they were looking to their own faithfulness. This is the problem with living under the Law. It isn't just exhorting people to live holy lives. Under the Law you are commanded to earn God's blessings by being faithful to the commandments. Under the New Covenant we look to Christ and his faithfulness.

In this episode Dennis discusses the issue of conformity from Elliot Aronson's book "The Social Animal." In it, Aronson discusses how people conform through compliance, identification, or internalization. We've seen how this has played out in Covid policies over the last two years but we can see the same thing in the Church as well. Conformity is not the problem; we all conform to something. To what we are conforming is the real issue and the main concern is how we get ourselves and others to conform to that thing.

In this episode Dennis looks at the life of a biblical character named Abimelech. This short account of a tyrant over the nation of Israel is given to us in Judges chapter 9. This man, the son of a famous judge of Israel, decides to assume the role of king in Israel and ends up being a tyrant. Murdering his brothers and eventually an entire city of his subjects, Abimelech becomes a cautionary tale for us today to "put not our faith in princes." In America, we ought not trust political leaders to bail us out or rule over us. Instead we, as free individuals, need to govern ourselves under the leadership of God. As William Penn famously said, "If we will not be governed by God, we must be governed by tyrants."

In this episode Dennis discusses Church history and how poor hermeneutics and incorrect biblical interpretation led to a doctrine called Apostolic Succession whereby the Church could insulate itself from false teaching. But in so doing it led to a belief that the Church leaders were infallible, just as inerrant in truth as the Word of God. This claim is neither biblical nor historically accurate.

In this episode Dennis discusses this word "wretched" and how it may not mean what we think it means and that confusion may...well...be making us unnecessarily wretched. He touches on how it's important to read different translations of the Bible so that you can catch when translators drop the ball or translate their biases in to the text. It's also helpful to have a working knowledge of how to detect those biases and do some rudimentary research in order to determine what the original authors meant.
He also discusses how our nature as Christians, who we are in Christ and in our inner man, is NOT what we would traditionally call "wretched" or "evil, vile, depraved." In fact, it is the fact that we AREN'T those things, although we may DO those things, that causes the tension in our walk with God

In this episode Dennis discusses the fact that we all have biases and presuppositions about nearly everything. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. What is not good is when we don't recognize what those presuppositions are or how they are formed.
In this episode specifically Dennis deals with this issue of security in salvation and how different Christians will debate this issue. What usually ends up happening, however, is that both Christians end up tossing verses back and forth that they believe supports their position but neither side is convinced but both leave feeling vindicated that they are right. What is needed is a deeper discussion about foundational beliefs that help to shape how we as Christians interpret certain passages

In this episode Dennis discusses how the Bible calls on Christians to love justice and how criminal justice reform should not be a Right/Left issue but rather a biblical issue. He touches on issues around the presumption of innocence, how the corporate press influences our belief in people's guilt or innocence, and how the Church should not see issues of criminal justice through a political lens.
