It's something special when a mama can put into words and pictures a children's book that addresses one of those "hard to start" conversations. In this episode we're sitting down with Jessica Whipple to talk about her book, "I think I think a Lot." She openly shares how her household is navigating the day-to-day of neurodivergence and what it looks like to take a deeper dive into the way God has uniquely made all of us in His perfect image. Jessica's thoughtful reflection and refreshing perspective are something we can all benefit from, especially as foster and adoptive mamas.

The Main Thing:We are still on break, like so many of you, for this holiday season. We are cherishing this extended time with family and friends to rest and grow. We're excited to be back next week with all new episodes!

Check out the shownotes from our amazing episode with Show Hope from Season 2. We'll see you with all new episodes next week!

For decades Show Hope has shown up for families pre and post adoption. Founded in 2003 by Steven and Mary Beth Chapman, Show Hope continues to be a light for families in the trenches of adoption. With a mission to engage the Church and eliminate barriers for those committing to the adoption process to grow their families, Show Hope has continued to expand opportunities for support. Most recently, their Medical Aid Grant program is helping families navigate a child’s medical needs after adoption finalization takes place.

We were thrilled when founder, Mary Beth Chapman, and Show Hope’s Executive Director, Emily Chapman Richards, agreed to join us on the podcast to discuss the new Medical Aid Grant program and the incredible work of Show Hope in the lives of adoptive families. It was an honor and privilege to share the mic with two women of incredible faith and passion for adoption. We’re so excited to share this conversation with you!

The Main Thing:We're in the holiday season and 2 Adoptive Mamas is taking a break this week to spend extra time with family and friends. We've pulled one of our most downloaded episodes from Season 3 for this week with the one and only Jamie Finn. Merry Christmas!!

Take a look at our shownotes from the original published episode:

"To those who follow her, she's a constant resource, encouragement, and much-needed dose of reality when navigating the ups and downs of foster care. Her heart for the Lord, care for vulnerable children, and desire to keep educating and supporting adoptive and foster families are unmatched.

For Episode 050 of the Two Adoptive Mama's Podcast, we're sitting down with Jamie Finn from Foster the Family to talk about love and loss. She's sharing her family's story, her work with Foster the Family, and more about authoring her very first book. Together our conversation spanned a variety of topics that together make up the complicated, challenging, yet necessary components of stepping into foster care. The Main Thing:Attachment is a buzz-word in the adoption and foster care community. Recent research and conversation has brought this important theory to the forefront. If you've been walking the adoptive and foster journey for a while, chances are you've heard a lot about the four different attachment styles and why childhood experiences are important to learn. The Main Thing:One of our primary goals here at Two Adoptive Mamas is to take a deep dive when we need one. When Andrea Pollack's name came across our desk, we knew we needed this for Episode 087. While Andrea's work is not specific to families navigating foster care and adoption, her work resonates with the needs of many parenting kids from hard places.

Oftentimes we're not ready or willing to throw up our hands and sound the alarm for help, but Andrea's approach will remind us that finding the right resources and support is one of the best things we can do for ourselves and our families. Together we're taking a close look at what it means to support parents of children with an autism diagnosis. Andrea's expertise and personal experience have empowered her to make a difference in the lives of those longing to see their families thrive amidst the challenges that an autism diagnosis can bring. Her heart, passion, and commitment to education make for an informative episode that we hope will empower families to find the support they need. The Main Thing:There's something extra-sweet about popping in your earbuds and having the opportunity to hear an adoption story from a mama. Sometimes through different seasons of our walk, we forget about the moments that made us families, and when we take a moment to reflect we see God's hand in each step.

For Episode 086 Sarah Nichols is sharing her family's walk through adoption and how God's purposeful timing challenged and refined them. We connected with Sarah simply because she is a follower of the show, and once we got a glimpse into her narrative we knew it was one we had to share with all of you! Her steadiness and resiliency are fueled by her faith. Her insight is refreshing and their story is an encouragement to the trials of the "wait" and a long-anticipated "match." The Main Thing:We've said it before, and we'll say it again, there's so much to consider when we discuss the adoption triad. For Episode 085 we're taking a deep dive with Daniela Coats to discuss what it looks like to support the biological children in foster and adoptive families.

Daniela is a social worker by trade, but also a "bio kid of a foster/adoptive family" and is now an adoptive and bio mom herself. Her perspective is uniquely informed by her personal experiences and her professional training. We found the conversation to be informative and enlightening. Daniela provides opportunities for further education to families that find themselves in this niche, and we're thrilled to have had this time with her --- and to share it with all of you!

The Main Thing:The dads are back! We’re thrilled to share this fun conversation for Episode 084 with Chris Telesco — you may remember his better half, Melissa, who joined us for Season 3 to share about their roller coaster ride to becoming a family of 6. Chris is so down to earth and gets real with the dads when it comes to navigating the unexpected of adoptive fatherhood. He’s sharing the ups and downs of 3 very unique adoptive situations and how he combatted the feelings of inadequacy and replaced it with a strong desire to love his children and make sure they knew the love of Jesus.

It goes without saying that together, Chris and Melissa are a few steps ahead of our families, and they’re someone we look up to and continue to learn from as they share their hearts. Grab your other half and first listen to Episode 060 and then listen to the Dadcast with Chris, Dan & Drew — they’re just the best!

The Main Thing:For Episode 083 we're pleased to share the privilege of having a conversation with Sharon Denny. You name it, she's got the experience when it comes to foster care and adoption. Her heart is caring for the most vulnerable and her passion is helping us show up for our kids from hard places.

Sharon is a wealth of knowledge and a breath of fresh air among challenging circumstances --- her heart is for Jesus and family. It's not every day that we have the honor of rubbing shoulders (or Zoom frames!) with someone that has committed her life's work to loving others and making a difference amidst the brokenness that comes with foster care and adoption. We're so thankful for her time of sharing with this community!

The Main Thing:We’re taking a trip! Down memory lane to take a closer look at what it looks like to prepare and actually travel for both international and domestic adoption. There are so many moving pieces to the adoption process, and the more you can do to prepare in advance, the less chaotic it will be in the moment. Or at least we can try to make it that way, right?!

During Episode 082 we are sharing our personal experiences and touching upon some of the nuances that transcend states and country lines. While we would never claim to know it all, we both have had our own experiences and have learned much from them and those who have gone before us. Whether you’re thinking about the process or preparing to travel we hope this conversation gives some hope, levity, and tangible help in preparing for this part of the journey. The Main Thing:If there's one thing we've learned over the years, it's that through sharing stories we don't feel so alone. It's with this in mind that we recorded Episode 081 with Kelsey Knodel. She's sharing her mama-heart as she reflects on the adoption of their sweet girl and as they prepare their hearts and home to hopefully continue growing their family through adoption.

Kelsey's transparency amidst the hard coupled with her faith, hope, and commitment to the journey of adoption makes for a time of encouragement that you won't want to miss. Whether you're waiting, in the midst of parenting, or considering what's next for your family, Kelsey's perspective has something for everyone. Enjoy!

The Main Thing:They're back! It's the dad-cast for Episode 080 and they're joined by Nate Smith to talk about finding perseverance and hope in the midst of foster care. You'll remember our time with Melinda on the podcast, and hearing their family's story through foster care. We've been so encouraged by their insight and courage to step into the broken and trust God to do the rest. Drew and Dan's conversation with Nate is a reflection of their heart for the most vulnerable and how to build a foundation of trust and respect with parents who find themselves amidst very challenging circumstances.

This one is for the dads (but you might like it too!) so join them for a deep dive into a family's story that will leave you encouraged, hopeful, and reminded of God's grace and provision through each part of the journey. The Main Thing:We're back! With Part 2 of our Parenting Teens mini-series with Abby Keiser from COBYS Family Services. This week we're taking a closer look at what it means to help a teen find their voice and how to effectively facilitate this in your home. Whether your family is impacted by foster care or adoption, the teen years can be challenging but so, so transformative. Abby reminds us of the privilege we have to step into the mess with our teens, lean into our faith, and provide the space and opportunity these children need to find security and the courage to thrive.

The Main Thing:Two words that can inflict some uncertainty --- parenting teens. Even more so, is parenting teens from hard places. But here's the thing, they need us and we have so much to learn from them. For Episode 078 Abby Keiser from COBYS Family Services is joining us for Part 1 of a mini-series on parenting your teen. We're starting with the basics and then getting even more specific as we identify what it takes in the day-to-day and how it impacts the big picture.

Whether you have a blip on the radar with a foster placement or a lifetime through adoption, these years are tough --- but we have a profound opportunity to plant a seed, lean into our faith, and help guide the way for these kiddos that we love so much.

The Main Thing:Episode 077 is one that we could listen to over and over again. Ashley Mitchell is one of a kind. She's brought her heart, passion, and determination to tackle the tough stuff for this conversation and we're so thankful for it. Ashley is a birth mom, bio mom, wife, advocate, and so much more. Her story brings light to the parts of adoption that make us uncomfortable, and that's precisely why we invited her to be on the show.

Take in her words, let this conversation settle in your soul, and allow it to challenge your thinking and what it means for you in your own foster or adoption journey. There is a lot of tough stuff to tackle, but Ashley takes the high-level complexities and brings it to a place where we can sit in the muck together with hope for the future and the children who we love so much.

The Main Thing:Heidi Glick is so full of heart, and our conversation with her is like a warm hug from a fellow adoptive mama who has been in the trenches and holds so much hope for the future. She’s opening up about her family’s journey through adoption and embracing the promise of hope we have in Jesus amidst the heartbreak that accompanies any adoption journey.

In addition to her personal story, for the first time we’re talking about ethical adoption, care for birth families, and what it looks like to navigate openness in an adoption relationship. Heidi’s honesty and compassion is refreshing, and we’re so thankful for her willingness to share with our listeners!

The Main Thing:

We first welcomed Chelsea Sobolik during Season 2 to talk about her work in advocating for families at our nation’s capital. Her personal story of adoption, journey to international adoption with her husband, and her professional work allow Chelsea to share one-of-a-kind insight. During our conversation Chelsea addresses high-level matters in a way that meets us in our day-to-day and reminds us there is a role for everyone to play. She’s sharing some recent personal highlights, a book update, and joins us as we take a closer look at advocacy, policy, and what it means to live in a post Roe v. Wade world. The Main Thing:These stories are hard to share. They open wounds, challenge our faith, and test our hearts. There is nothing simple, easy, or brief when it comes to adoption and foster care. There is beauty and brokenness ---- healing and grief ---- and together we hold it all with the hopes that we can remain centered on one thing. Our heart for Him and our love for them. The children who need us most, and the stories that brought us together. The opportunity to reunify families, and the sacrifice and commitment it takes to make it happen. These stories are hard to share.

You might recognize Melinda from Season 2. She shared her heart and her family's experience as they welcomed their first foster placement --- a baby girl. For Episode 074 we have the honor and privilege of welcoming back Melinda along with Lindy. Together they have navigated difficult waters to be in a place where they can stand united in their love for a little girl who brought their families together. They're opening their hearts and sharing their story of reunification and openness in foster care. It's with humility and sincere gratitude that we share their story with you! The Main Thing:They're the silent heroes behind the podcast, supporting us since day one and every step of the way. They're our other halves and have walked the joyful, painful, everyday moments with us. They're our beloved husbands, and they're taking over the podcast! We thought it was time for the dads to have a voice and bring their insight to the table. When Dan and Drew agreed to take over the show for a few episodes this season, we were thrilled!

So --- time to hand over the ear-buds to your partner in crime (or tune in yourself!) because the Dads are taking a deep dive into their shadow feelings, how they're finding community, and why moms AND dads need to talk about the "tough stuff" too. Enjoy!

The Main Thing:There's nothing like a good book! But what about when you're looking for one to help tell your family's story, and you just can't seem to find the right narrative? Adoption is beautiful, messy, hard, complicated --- difficult to put into an appropriate amount of pages that won't take days to read. But we're in luck! For Episode 071 we're hanging out with Allison Olson. She's an adoptee, adoptive mom, and now the author of the children's book, Surrounded By Love: An Open Adoption Story.

During our time together we had the privilege of learning more about her connection to the adoption community and how that not only inspired her book but the narrative she wants to help facilitate for so many families. The Main Thing:Sometimes it's difficult to articulate the challenges we face as foster and adoptive parents. As we navigate the needs of our children, our own feelings, emotions, and needs often fall to the wayside and when we finally come up for air we might find ourselves feeling disconnected and deflated by our circumstances.

If this sounds familiar to you, you may be experiencing something called "blocked care." Experts Melissa and Lisa are joining us from The Adoption Connection to take a closer look at blocked care and how we can overcome it. Their professional and personal experiences, coupled with their heart to care for families through community, made for such a rich discussion for Episode 070! The Main Thing:Can you believe it?! Season 4 is HERE! It's been 68 episodes since we introduced ourselves, so we figured for Episode 069 (and for all the new listeners!) we'd take a step back into our stories, our shadow feelings, and how we ended up in this space together.

Since day one, we have remained committed to creating a community centered around love, trust, and respect for the experience and opportunities that have made us families. Our children are precious, and their stories belong to them. However, we are making the space to acknowledge our journey to becoming mamas and the joy and challenges that have come with that privileged role. Wherever you are in your adoption journey, it is okay to feel what you feel, find a safe space to say what you need to say, and at the end of the day (or really any part of it), bring it all to Jesus.

Thanks for being here with us. We're honored to kick off Season 4 and grateful for the opportunity to share with you!

The Main Thing:This week we’re sitting down with Kelly Mahler to talk all things interoception. Do you know what that is? We had a more general idea and this has quickly become one of the topics we wanted to highlight with a deeper dive! There’s a lot to understand, acknowledge and embrace when it comes to interoception, so while we’re highlighting it for Episode 067, we’re not able to unpack every aspect in our time together — so stay tuned because we’ll keep digging into this topic in future episodes!

Kelly is an Occupational Therapist with a heart for equipping caretakers to validate and uncover the uniqueness of an interoception experience. She has developed an award-winning curriculum and a steadfast community of those committed to the research and application of interoception, and she continues to take a closer look at these concepts as related to those who have experienced trauma. Her work is fascinating, reassuring, and thought-provoking! There’s so much to take away from our conversation with Kelly - we know you’re going to love her just as much as we do! The Main Thing:It's par for the course of adoption to have unknowns. Add on top of that international travel, and that adds a layer. But then there was the addition of a global pandemic --- and all bets were off. Our hearts ache for the children and their forever families that still await placement because of the restrictions over the last two years. Adoption has always been complicated --- but this has been uncharted territory.

Thankfully, adoptive moms like Brigitta Canfield are willing to share their stories, encourage others, and relay a reminder that we were never in control in the first place --- God is. Brigitta joined us for Episode 066 of the Two Adoptive Mamas podcast to share her family's journey to adopting internationally amidst the pandemic. Her perspective of God's work and trust in His plan throughout the entire process is refreshing and we know it will be inspiring to others. The Main Thing:Adoption is changing. If you've been in the process and engaged in conversation among the adoption community, adoption today is a lot different than the adoption of yesterday. There's so much to navigate once you immerse yourself into this process. It's overwhelming, there are lots of questions to be answered, plenty of paperwork to complete --- but in the end one goal --- family.

For Episode 065 of the Two Adoptive Mamas Podcast we're joined by Erin Quick - and let us just say, you're going to love her. She focused her skills, talents, and heart for helping children find forever families by founding PairTree. The Main Thing:Tracy always had a heart for orphans, so when their family learned of the opportunity to host international orphans in hopes of helping them to find a forever family stateside, they were all-in. After a few opportunities, the Scoggins family hosted a young boy from Ukraine and he immediately stole Tracy's heart. With a heart for adoption, she was hopeful that her family might also feel the special connection. Sadly, the young boy returned to his home, and Tracy was left with an impossible feeling of emptiness.

But God.

Join us for Episode 057 to hear Tracy's story of trust, faith, and perseverance. It's a story only God could write for a family willing to follow the call. We're so grateful for our time with Tracy and we know her story will be an encouragement to all who listen!

The Main Thing:If we've learned one thing amidst our own parenting journies, it's the value of hearing from someone who has gone before you. They've been there, done that, and had to have those conversations. It's refreshing to know we're not alone and that while we might not be in that stage now, we will eventually, and by the grace of our Heavenly Father we will find a way to thrive!

Deb Kreider is a mom who loves Jesus and holds fast to the promise of His grace and provision for her family. She and her husband built their family through adoption, and while there have been ups and downs, they wouldn't trade their journey for anything. During Episode 055 Deb shares her experience of parenting adult adoptees and even more so how adoption looks now compared to when her children were infants. Deb's honesty, transparency, and encouragement will meet you where you're at and encourage you with some timeless wisdom for when you reach "that stage" of parenting. We're so grateful for our time with her, and we know you'll benefit from it too! Episode Resources:Check out our Two Adoptive Mamas resource list HERE. The Main Thing:As parents, sometimes there is nothing as comforting as hearing from someone who has been in your shoes, is walking a similar journey, and is willing to share insight from their own experience.

For Episode 054 we're sitting down with adoptive mom, Taylor Johnson. When they adopted their son through the National Down Syndrome Adoption Network, they had lots of questions and sought out the support offered by the network. Together their family has navigated the needs of their son, but most of all embraced the love and joy he brings to their family.

Taylor's steadiness and humble confidence are refreshing as she shares their family's path to working with NDSAN and how they've continued to be active in the support and resources/education offered by their local support group. The Main Thing:From day one it's been a priority at Two Adoptive Mamas to magnify important conversations that need to be happening in the foster and adoption world. More importantly, it is crucial to discuss these topics while embracing each part of the adoption triad.

For Episode 051 we're sitting down with Eleanor and Marlene to take a deeper dive into navigating open adoption. Capturing both the adoptive mom and birth mom's perspectives in this episode, we're removing the titles and making way for what really matters when it comes to loving our children.

We laughed, cried, and found a lot of common ground during our minutes together. While you can't see it as a listener, we had the privilege of watching Eleanor and Marlene sit side by side and share their respect, love, and commitment to family.

This is one of those episodes that stopped us in our tracks. While you may have to adjust or rewind a few times to catch all the audio, we promise it's worth it. We'll treasure this conversation forever.

The Main Thing:It's really important to us at Two Adoptive Mamas that we dive into different stories, perspectives, and experiences in hopes that we'll meet our community of listeners where they're at. Dr. Taylor Whittington brings the adoptee perspective to this conversation, sharing her personal story of adoption and how as an adult and mental health advocate she is passionate about the dialogue among today's adult adoptees.

While Taylor's experience may not mirror that of others, her story and perspective are thought-provoking as we think about raising the next generation of adoptees, providing opportunities for support, and continuing to serve as resources to one another.

At Two Adoptive Mamas, we are grateful for the insight and wisdom of those in our community. We're here to talk about it. We believe that in order to be the best mamas we can be for our kids, it's crucial to learn from one another and lean into each other so we can embrace and thrive within the plan God has for our families.

We are so grateful to Dr. Taylor Whittington for sharing her story with us; we know you'll enjoy it too!

Lauren McAfee loves Jesus, her role as wife and “mama,” and has an incredibly special way of sharing her family’s story of courage, heartbreak, and trust in God’s plan. As we listened back to this conversation, we found ourselves in awe of Lauren’s ability to manage so much yet with such grace that she so genuinely cherishes her varying roles in this season of life. Whether you’re thinking about adoption, in the wait, or in the trenches and wondering how to manage it all, Lauren has a message for you. You’ll find that Episode 047 is a compilation of our thoughts and reflections on what Season 2 brought to the podcast, and what we’re looking forward to most for the future of Two Adoptive Mamas. We never could have imagined what we would learn, what others would share, and how we would become even more connected within the adoption and foster care community.

We’re thrilled to share that Season 3 is already in the works. As we have in the past, we’ll be a little quieter on our social platforms and won’t be releasing any new episodes for the next 12 weeks. We like to dive deeper into the conversations that need to happen, but aren't happening enough --- and Episode 046 is just that. Megan Boudreaux is an author, advocate, adoptive mama, and founder of Respire Haiti. Her message has challenged the thoughts of many, but the truth, love, and passion behind her family's mission are nothing short of incredible.

We were thrilled to sit down with Megan to hear just a snippet of her decade-long journey that is helping bring restoration to brokenness and truth to how we can actually care for orphans globally.

It's always our goal to keep these episodes between 30-40 minutes because we know as moms, even that can be difficult to carve out in our day. The truth is, we could have talked to Megan for hours - and then some! We hope you love this episode just as much as we do! We’re taking a moment (Mama-minisode 045) to reflect this week, as mamas, on recent global events. It’s heavy, it’s controversial, and we’re not looking to take any type of stance or suggest how you should conduct your day-to-day.

We are, however, offering some resources that we have found to be very helpful in evaluating what is happening, through a biblical lens, and what it looks like to navigate this in our homes from this corner of the world.

We’ve linked all the resources shared in this episode in our show notes, so if you might find these helpful, you can find them there.

We’re in this together, mamas. Hard IS hard, but even we would admit that recent weeks have added some pretty substantial heartache for many across the globe.

Please continue to join us in prayer, specifically for the moms across the globe, who are facing their hard and still have to show up and “mom” every day.

The Main Thing:

There is so much stress and anxiety surrounding how to have “the talk” with our adopted children. Not that talk (wink, wink), but the talk and truth in how a family can be built through adoption.

How do we bring it up? What will we think? How do we answer their questions? What if they’re upset? What if I feel hurt by their reaction?

Whitney Bunker, author of We Can Talk About It, joined us for Episode 044 to answer our questions, provide tangible strategies, and offer support to adoptive parents as they help children understand family. The conversation is intimidating! We recognize this and want to help equip our mamas (and their partners!) to feel confident in approaching conversations around foster care and adoption with love and respect that will only further the trust we have built as families.

Whitney’s book is a comfort for children and a resource for parents, offering a child-friendly storyline and a multitude of tips at the end of the book for parents and caregivers. We love this resource and our conversation with Whitney was so enlightening!

The Main Thing:

As adoptive and foster parents (or prospective ones!) we are "in the midst" of it all the time. It's on our hearts, in our minds, part of our physical routine, and most of our practical day-to-day. But, do we know and understand the theological roots of adoption?

For Episode 043, we're going there with Pastor Luke Le Duc. He's giving us an overview of "adoption" in the Old and New Testaments and sketching a landscape of what it means for our lives today. We had so many questions, thoughts, and ideas, and all three of us did our best to pack it into a 40-minute episode that we believe will challenge and encourage every listener.

We've said it before, and we'll say it again. We like the "deep dives" over here at Two Adoptive Mamas, and our conversation with Luke falls right in line with that purpose! Enjoy --- and be encouraged!

We've heard it said that the week between Christmas and New Year's doesn't count. It's a "sink into your couch" kind of week to unwind, continue festivities and game plan for that New Year purge of the clutter (physical and otherwise) that has infiltrated our homes over the past month.

So let it be. Let it be a week that is different...but let's make it count, shall we?

We wanted to take a moment to say a few things:

  1. Merry Christmas!
  2. We can't wait for what's to come in the year ahead.
  3. We have some special guests who wanted to offer their own dose of Christmas joy - we think it's pretty great!

Let's soak in this week, and make it count. And even in the thick of it, remember, you've got this, mama!

The Main Thing:We can’t think of a better way to finish out the calendar year than with our husbands. So, for Episode 035, they’re back! We’re taking a dive into what we learned this year and our goals for the year ahead. We are grateful, all four of us, for what the Two Adoptive Mamas platform has taught us as parents, advocates, and friends. Together our adoption and foster community is stronger when we learn from one another and  in the challenging and status quo seasons.
We’re so grateful to our husbands who were willing to jump in and share. They’re an important part of the “behind the scenes” of the podcast — we could not do this without them.

So, join us on our double-date, and hear from our other halves where we find ourselves as we close the books on 2021.

The Main Thing:There's so much preparation and support that happens pre-placement. But what about after a child finds their forever family? Or after a foster family welcomes a child into their home? What about continued support and resources --- do they exist? They DO! But we don't talk about it enough.

Sheryl Bernot is an adoptee, adoptive mom, and now works with a foster care and adoption agency. We're starting the conversation in Episode 033 on the importance and necessity of post-permanency services in all seasons - calm and challenging! We believe strong families raise thriving adoptees, and it takes a village to do it. Join us to learn more about how you can find the support and resources that just might make all the difference!
