What could you do with your life if you made fuel from your fears? Do you just know you have something to offer, but are frustrated that you are not yet delivering on it? Would dream-fulfilling content be a help to you?
Jeff Meyer, our host for the ‘move forward anyway’ podcast, is the author of “Fear Not, Dream Big, & Execute”, the creator of The Dream Accelerator, and is a Christian pastor.
Jeff has helped countless people identify and clarify their own dreams to live a happier and more fulfilling life, and now we all have a chance to hear how we can do this too.
“Jeff is one of the most gifted and articulate public speakers I know. His passionate and engaging style, combined with his unique ability to boil the complex down to the basics. What’s more, his visionary leadership style is igniting a revolution and waking up many to the transformational powers of Jesus. Follow Jeff! He’s on fire.” – Bryan T
“A gifted thought partner and creative catalyst, Jeff Meyer invites us to explore the many ways in which we blur our vision and cripple our momentum. Equipped with his generous offering of insights and exercises, you’ll learn to discern your dream, and protect it from your own ego’s insistence to stay safe and play small. As for the well-meaning yet disrupting, even discouraging agendas that others hold for you and your vision, Jeff gives wise guidance on how to release your expectations of support and approval from them, in love. If your habit is to downsize your dreams to fit your perception of what’s possible, Jeff will empower both the dreaming and doing in your life, linking you to God’s immeasurably grand plan.” – Lynn Schoener, Owner, Executive & TeamCoach Coaching Creative Change
“I have had the privilege of knowing Jeff and working with him for over ten years. He is a master visionary with the unique ability to guide teams and organizations to a place of stunning clarity. Jeff is highly relational and passionate about his role to navigate leaders through their growth challenges.” – Jim Randall, Co-Founder CEO/Sr Lead Navigator at Auxano Consulting
“Pursuing a dream can feel either too abstract or like one more obligation for an already busier-than-I-should-be working mom with an ever-growing to-do list. Jeff showed me how having dreams and pursuing them can and should inspire, taking us from the midst of “ought to” to “get to,” launching us from a world of obligation to a world of passion. Opportunity, and adventure. He sparked a dream in me, and I can’t wait to see what God does with it.” – Katie Ignatowski, wife, mother, and executive legal counsel
Let’s talk about impostor syndrome. It seems we all face it at some point during our lives, and lately, it’s almost like everyone has the same fears of being inadequate. Am I doing my job right? Am I really talented? Am I really deserving of everything I have? These are just some of the questions that can plague our mind if we give in to impostor syndrome. Unfortunately, if we begin to believe these self-doubts, we might run into actual problems that hinder our progress through life.
In this episode, we’ll go through different strategies to combat this inescapable part of being alive. I’ll give you actionable steps to realize that no one is scrutinizing your every move, and that you’re indeed a talented, well-rounded person whose achievements are worth celebrating. We’ll focus on progress over perfection and on challenging negative self talk. We’ll make sure you have the tools to step outside of that self–defeating rut you might find yourself in.
If you need a little help getting started, I’ve made you a progress journal below you can follow to start tracking your own successes. Send me a message to let me know if this is something you have found helpful in dealing with Impostor Syndrome.

As humans, we have the incredible gift of being able to “feel all the feelings.” Moments of great joy, great sadness, all of these are wonderful things. However, letting our feelings and letting our emotions out of our control can also have negative effects on not just us, but those around us. We must understand how to navigate our feelings, and direct them in the directions that best work for our dream.
Self-awareness and self-regulation are but two of the most important tools in the path to control our emotions. It is by looking at the mirror (seeing the plank in our own eye), that we can make moves away from obstacles in our lives, or potential stressors (taking the speck out of your brother’s eye). We’ll take a look at the Jesus’ Way and what He can teach us about regulating our emotions to succeed. NUBvOFYeVLSprBYQrRZe

The Man In The Mirror: How Self-reflection Helps You Grow & Succeed
It’s the beginning of a new year, and there’s no better time than now to look back and reflect on all of the things that shaped us for the better… and for the worse. These are times of self-reflection, but we shouldn’t limit ourselves to once-a-year, new year resolution self-assessment. Rather, self-reflection should be a constant mental exercise that, just like its physical counterpart, must be trained with discipline.
Everyone can take advantage of self-reflection, and this look deep into ourselves can and must happen often. Believe it or not, the path to solving exterior problems and stressors almost always begins with a look inward. So let’s start off the year with the right foot and get excited to meet that man in the mirror.

The Art of Gratitude, It’s Not Just For Thanksgiving Anymore!
Thanksgiving is a beautiful time of year where we get to look back and express our gratitude to all the people and things that have helped us on our path. The fact we have made this day into a national holiday is very special, because, in a way, we’re societally encouraged to reflect on everything and everyone that we should be thankful for.
Gratitude was never intended to be a one-day, mandated experience. Rather, gratitude is a gift and an art form that we can and should master. Taking time each day to practice gratitude can help us look inward and recognize where we are in our journey, identifying all the ways we have succeeded, as well as all the ways we can still continue to grow and learn.

Bad habits, when left unchecked, can be the greatest enemy for progress. In this episode we talk about self-destructive behaviors and how negative mindsets reduce our energy and motivation to take the necessary steps for achieving our goals.
As trapped as we may feel, there are strategies we can apply in our daily lives to free us from our bad habits. And throughout that entire process we need to remember that we’re never alone. Sometimes, we must be vulnerable and open up to others, even if we think we can go through this road alone.
The key strategy to dealing with bad habits is not in elimination, but rather, replacing. We must identify the cues that are causing these bad habits to occur. Then, replace the bad with positive behavior, just to reward it. This way, the bad habit will, over time, be replaced with a good one, almost without even noticing it

These deep-rooted assumptions come across as statements of fact in your head, which leads to a slippery slope of procrastination and inaction.

“That really hit home for me that as long as I was working for someone else, I was never probably going to get where I wanted to be,” shares Jason Stendalen, owner and agent of c4 Insurance Company. Jason and his wife are serial entrepreneurs with 4 businesses between the two of them. Jason’s goal with c4 is to really shake up the industry and change the way people think about insurance. In spite of encountering many challenges and having to fully restart from zero multiple times in a row, Jason has always maintained his resilience and consistency. Each new start was met head on and he did not let the fear of failure get in his way.
It can be daunting to step outside the box and keep moving forward even after setbacks. Jason attributes much of his resilience to having a strong support system encouraging him and holding him accountable each step of the way. If you have been considering stepping out on your own and becoming an entrepreneur, don’t let fear of trying something new hold you back. Even if you do not succeed right away, keep going anyway. As long as you believe in yourself and really love what you do, you will find a way to make it work.
If you have been considering stepping out onto a new path and pursuing your dreams of entrepreneurship, don’t be afraid to try. Stay resilient and consistent, even in the face of challenges or roadblocks, and you may be surprised by all that you can achieve.
Quotes
• “That really hit home for me that as long as I was working for someone else, that I was never probably going to get where I wanted to be, or they were going to require things that I didn't want to do. And so that just kind of hit home for me that maybe I needed to find a different avenue to pursue my dreams.” (8:37-8:58 | Jason)
• “No matter what industry you're in, I think there's bad apples out there that kind of ruin that for all of us. And there's people that are ethical and do things maybe not the way that most of us would probably appreciate. And so I just really wanted to change that. And so C4 was created because I wanted to just change the industry.” (14:37-14:58 | Jason)
• “I think just being honest and living by the golden rule and just treating people the way that we want to be treated, I think that goes a long way. And I think that gets lost today.” (19:06-19:17 | Jason)
• “Just growing and maintaining our current path, that's our primary focus is to just continue to do a good job.” (30:12-30:19 | Jason)
• “You have to take a step outside the box. You have to do something that you haven't already tried. Don't be afraid to fail.” (32:12-32:19 | Jason)
• “Talk to someone that's going to support and encourage these movements, these thoughts, these actions, and someone that's going to hold you accountable to actually taking steps towards it. That's the only way you're going to get there.” (32:48-33:00 | Jason)

“I think pastors have been removed from leadership development all the way up to ordination, and I think that grieves the heart of God,” shares Pastor Tim Ahlman with the Christ Greenfield church. Tim is a third generation pastor and leader with the Unite Leadership Collective. His dream is to unite congregations and work together to multiply disciples as a collective. Leadership development and discipleship are two sides of the same coin and without strong leaders, the church will not be able to spread the message of God to as many people.
Many pastors make the mistake of getting more caught up in the show and in being a big personality rather than actually growing the church. As a pastoral leader, you need to fall in love with development and bringing more people to Jesus’ table. Without strong leadership, the collective will fall apart and the mission of spreading God’s love to as many people as possible before Jesus returns will fail. Pastors may face internal and external resistance when presented with the idea of change, but it is important to push through that and recognize that fear and resistance as the voice of Satan. Ministry often feels isolating as pastors have been wrongly led to believe that it is wrong for them to have friends. However, no one can do everything alone, even Jesus had friends. Find people who can be your safety net and work together to reach your dreams.
If you feel the calling to pastoral leadership, do not let fear stop you from spreading the message of God’s love. It takes time to build trust between congregations, but coming together allows for a greater multiplication of discipleship.
Quotes
• “Discipleship is more caught than taught.” (5:52-5:54 | Tim)
• “Everything rises and falls on leadership. And by the grace of God, I am in a very healthy circuit and a very healthy district.” (12:03-12:12 | Tim)
• “It's a slow go in building trust between congregations. It does not happen overnight.” (16:45-16:49 | Tim)
• “This is not about me. This is about Him, and then it's about our work together.” (23:43-23:49 | Tim)
• “My desire is not to win. My desire is simply to stay in the game and run with perseverance the race set out for me.” (24:47-24:55 | Tim)
• “I see leadership development and discipleship as two sides of the same coin.” (30:36-30:41 | Tim)
• “I think pastors have been removed from leadership development all the way up to ordination, and I think that grieves the heart of God.” (35:49-34:56 | Tim)
• “Fear is from Satan, and I'm not bringing shame here. It should have no place in the heart of the follower of Jesus.” (38:23-38:31 | Tim)

“Don't ever doubt God. If you feel led to do this, if you feel a strong enough passion for this, there's a reason. And you’ve got to walk through that door,” shares Paige Risley, co-owner of We Recruit Well alongside longtime friend Beth Moffatt. Both Paige and Beth felt called to help business owners who were struggling to balance their business life with their family life. These two may have been friends prior to starting their business, but it is their differences that are their biggest strengths.
Beth and Paige differ in where they excel in the business so much so that they think of themselves as salt and pepper. This works out perfectly so that they can divide and conquer to get everything done between the two of them. Together, they help to match overworked business owners with the perfect assistant for them, one who aligns with their values. This helps these entrepreneurs fill in the gaps where they were struggling and take tasks off their plates so that they can regain time for their families and personal lives.
If you feel passionate about helping others and feel like you are being called to start a business, there is a reason for it. Don’t be afraid to take the first step through any door God holds open for you.
Quotes
• “They're saying, ‘I just need more time with my family, and I want to be in my business. But I don't want to be so up in it all the time’.” (12:14-12:23 | Beth)
• “We are salt and pepper. God just put us together perfectly for this business.” (16:00-16:09 | Beth)
• “When I get on a call, the first thing I want to know is what is your need? I want to hear them out. I never start with what we can provide because how can I know what we can provide till I know where the gaps are for them?” (23:41-23:56 | Beth)
• “We're always looking for someone who aligns with their values, with the business or church or nonprofit values in some way because that is above everything.” (35:46-35:59 | Beth)
• “Don't ever doubt God. If you feel led to do this, if you feel a strong enough passion for this, there's a reason. And you got to walk through that door.” (47:14-47:28 | Paige)

“Who can I invite into my life that has the kind of influence I'm looking for to help me make quality decisions? “Courage is the ability to feel fear and do it anyway,” explains Gigi Butler, Founder and Culinary Creator of Gigi's Cupcakes and Author. Fourteen years ago, Gigi opened her first bakery with only thirty-three dollars left in her name. Five years later, she had over 120 stores in over twenty-four states, demonstrating the power of sticking to your dream.
Before Gigi opened her first bakery, she was a cleaner and aspiring singer living in Nashville. One day, while cleaning a client’s toilet, she got a call from her brother, who encouraged her to open a cupcake shop. After this life-changing call, Gigi found the courage to trust God and work toward making her dream a reality. Although it was risky, Gigi hit it big with Gigi’s Cupcakes and learned what it meant to be an entrepreneur.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for an uplifting conversation on striving to live for the “why not?” Learn more about Gigi’s entrepreneurial journey, courage’s relationship with fear, and the unbelievable rewards of taking a risk.
Quotes
• “Courage is the ability to feel fear and do it anyway.” (5:06-5:10 | Gigi)
• “And all through my life, it's been a pattern of a tenacious spirit. That's what God gives you. God gives you special gifts.” (6:34-6:41 | Gigi)
• “If you listen to what the world says about you, you're never going to heal. You're going to be in a rut, you're going to be devastated, and you're going to be depressed your whole life. If you depend on what people say about you, you're done. So good luck with that, because it's never going to work. You have to hear the words of healing from what God's perspective of you is.” (13:08-13:28 | Gigi)
• "You have to go through it to learn it. You can't learn these skills in a college setting. It's getting the touch and feel, mistakes and pain.” (17:11-17:21 | Gigi)
• “I think people need to know that being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. Living fearlessly and being anointed doesn't mean you'll have an easy life. It means you are going to be persecuted more than most people.” (20:39-20:45 | Gigi)
• “Shame on you if you're feeling something deep in your spirit, and you keep hearing it and don't act upon it. Because you're missing an opportunity to build something and create something that God has intended you to do.” (25:50-26:04 | Gigi)

“I think we have to give ourselves permission to adequately look at what our skills are,” explains Christina Walker, Vocal Performance Coach at Christina Walker's Vocal Performance Studio and CEO of Christina Walker Communications. Christina was a vocal coach for twenty-two years and learned much about entrepreneurship throughout her career. Now, she has a waiting list for her ever-growing business, where she finds fulfillment in watching people improve a skill they love.
Christina saw a hole in the vocal coach market—how kids performed under pressure. Through her program, she teaches children how to move past the anxieties of auditions and live performances to showcase their techniques. Understanding that the “performance energy” can cause our minds to lose control, Christina uses her natural gifts to help her students work past the fear and own their performances.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for an inspirational conversation on using your gifts to influence the marketplace. Learn more about Christina’s shift from the missionary mindset to business, why we should utilize our natural talents, and how to choose faith over fear.

• “I know the vision. I know what I'm going for. I can see it, feel it, taste it. It's there.” (33:07-33:13) Christina)
• “I think now more than ever, parents need to know what's actually in the performing arts because it's really geared a certain way. “I do something every day that makes me afraid. That is my goal,” explains Kary Oberbrunner, CEO of Igniting Souls Publishing. Throughout his writing career, Kary has realized that fear promotes productivity. Today, Kary and Jeff explore our relationship with fear and how to utilize that feeling to trigger action.
Kary understands that all human beings fall many times before they learn to walk. This truth still applies to adults when trying to achieve a goal. Since failure is inevitable, it is not something that defines us as people. Failure is a part of life. With this in mind, it’s essential to put yourself out there and not let fear paralyze you but instead motivate you to fulfill your dreams.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for an uplifting conversation on taking imperfect action. Learn more about fear’s relationship to productivity, the importance of “flow,” and why failure is not an identity.
Quotes
• “I do something every day that makes me afraid. That is my goal.” (2:57 - 3:03)
• “Most people never get in the flow or rarely get in the flow, because they've learned to struggle. And therefore the fear that comes with struggle is something to be avoided rather than invited.” (3:56 - 4:09)
• “Humans are either evolving right before us, or we're learning to tap into “flow.” It’s an optimal state of human performance.” (5:20 - 5:31)
• “I didn't have any plans. I just say take imperfect action and take your next best step.” (17:30 - 17:38)
• “The world has changed. Are you still trying to reach your people the same way?” (22:22 - 22:26)
• “I'm the guy who says clarity attracts and confusion repels. I don't want to be • unclear and then repel people.” (23:52 - 23:59)

“51% of what we do is just telling people that we believe in them,” says Ben Griffin, Pastor and City Director of LINC Twin Cities and cousin of host Jeff Meyer. With over twenty years of pastoral experience, Ben understands that his job is to empower others to follow God’s path for them. Through his efforts, Ben reminds his fellow dreamers that strategies and networks are in place to help them reach their full potential.
Although worrying is natural, Ben reminds the listeners about the vital use of prayer. As feelings of anxiety and fear come, we can overcome these negative emotions and genuinely move forward if we trust God’s plan. By telling God what you need and trusting him to guide you, we ultimately put ourselves in the position to work through our discomfort to find fulfillment.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for a reassuring conversation on trusting God with your dreams. Learn more about Jeff and Ben’s family history, how failure is part of the road to success, and the importance of leaning on the Lord.
Quotes
• “51% of what we do is just telling people that we believe in them. I think God's put you in place to do that. Now, we're with you to help figure out what that looks like. The other 49% is bringing in processes and strategies and networks and navigators to walk with you in the process.” (9:27 - 10:00)
• “Down the road, we create a map of things to maximize and multiply. So, once you're on the ground, you can take it to the next level.” (10:35 - 10:43)
• “Name a person that hasn't failed. Name one person with raging success that didn't come through the road of failures on the way. God uses those things to build and grow us.” (15:32 - 15:46)
• “Everything we're doing is seating the leaders of the future. So, overcoming fear comes from that deep-seated way of pressing through. We can't underestimate the power of leaning on the Lord.” (18:04 - 18:19)
• “We’re trying to help the church be more efficient in the work of the Kingdom so that more and more people know Jesus.” (25:05 - 25:15)
• “As entrepreneurs, the first stage is just doing it when we start. But you'll hit a block, and every founder hits that.” (29:15 - 29:22)

“What is the smallest possible steps you can take? And often the smallest possible step is even smaller than we think,” says Sarah Young, Founder, and CEO of Zing Collaborative. After doing many things in the corporate world, Sarah realized that her greatest passion was coaching people in that space. In 2013, she founded her own business, Zing Collaborative, where she finds fulfillment in supporting people and leaders in the corporate world.
While working a corporate job, Sarah had the epiphany that her work was not aligned with her core values or goals. One day, she felt an urge to make a change, prompting her to put in her notice. Shortly after, she went to the Small Business Development Center to file for Zing Collaborative, proving you can take control of your professional life at any time. Now a successful business owner, Sarah has reached a new career milestone she is excited to share today: launching her new book Expansive Impact, An Invitation To Lead In Everyday Moments.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for an inspirational conversation on finding your way in the corporate world. Learn more about how Sarah started Zing Collaborative, the writing process of her book, and how to channel overthinking into action.
Quotes
• “My clients are on all sides of the political spectrum. They have opinions about all these different topics going on right now. And I love these humans deeply.” (24:44 - 24:55)
• “I love connecting with my clients, talking with the people in my inner circle, talking with my girlfriends, talking with the people I get to work with, and talking with my colleagues. For me, that's a reminder of what I get to do every day and a really simple but impactful way to reconnect to that.” (26:39 - 27:01)
• “I think for me, the success of the book is simply that the people who are meant to find the book, find the book.” (35:58 - 36:07)
• “The intention that I'm holding is to support the book in making a joyful entry into the world.” (36:23 - 36:33)
• “What is the smallest possible steps you can take? Often, the smallest possible step is even smaller than we think.” (41:10 - 41:18)

“That was my vision, just Christians mobilizing to good and do kindness,” says Reverand Shawn Morrison, Founder and Executive Director of Good in the ‘Hood. When Reverand Shawn started his organization in 2003, he served as the Evangelism Director for a local missionary training college. This experience led him to create the non-profit ministry, Good in the ‘Hood, where they help vulnerable communities through intentional kindness.
In the beginning, Reverend Shawn wasn’t sure of the proper programs and structure for his dream. He just knew he wanted to help people in need of God. Understanding that it’s the Holy Spirit that transforms people, not programs, Reverend Shawn focused on empathy to build the trust of others. Although Good in the ‘Hood is not a large organization, they do valuable work to aid struggling communities and successfully collaborate with their church partners.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyways for an inspiring conversation on running a non-profit ministry. Learn more about how Reverand Shawn started Good in the ‘Hood, prayer and encouragement’s role in moving him forward, and the importance of asking for advice.
Quotes:
• ”We use a kindness-based model where we brought intentional kindness. Romans chapter two, verse four was kind of the key verse there, which says, ‘The loving kindness of God leads to repentance.’ It's a reconciling agent. And so we practice what we call low tension evangelism.” (03:49-04:05)
• “Good in the ‘Hood was like a speedboat. It could turn and pivot, and it was very nimble, where other organizations were bigger ships, but it was harder for them to do some of that intricate work. They weren't as nimble to turn, but we could do that.” (11:00 - 11:15)
• “I constantly feel this anxiety over things, but I try not to let that move me so I'm not driven by emotion. I try the best I can through prayer and encouragement from others to stay on track with what I believe is the calling and vision of God.” (14:54 - 15:09)
• “The thing I've said to myself, and I believe is, God cares about the success of this ministry infinitely more than I do. So, I don't have to feel the stress and the pressure. As I've grown, I've been able to relax a little bit more than in the beginning when I felt it was all on me, and I felt like I had to do for God rather than from God. And that's a big difference. It's not just semantics.” (20:15 - 20:41)
• “That was my vision, just Christians mobilizing to good and do kindness.” (27:48 - 27:53)
• “Recognize your limitations of what God has called you to do. What are the parameters of what you're supposed to do? Don't try and be bigger than you are, and don't try to be too small and have false humility. What is God saying to you?” (34:11 - 34:25)
• “I ask advice all the time, even when I think I know the answer. And the reason for that is I am usually surprised by what I didn't know. People give more than I expect, and they often get involved because they feel honored. So, that's one of the secrets that we found is asking advice from people.” (35:50 - 36:08)

“Don't ever be afraid of what God asks you to do because it's what he created you to do,” says Kathy Bissen, Founder and Medical Director of SoleCare for Souls. Seventeen years ago at bible study, Kathy felt compelled by God to start something, although she did not initially know what. After a night of praying, it finally hit her, and Kathy realized that she wanted to create a foot care clinic for the homeless, bringing her dream into focus.
Although an experienced nurse, Kathy was not an expert in podiatry. Driven to learn what she could and collect the necessary tools, Kathy kept meeting the right people to make her clinic a reality. By trusting that God would guide her despite her doubts, Kathy is proof that you don’t need to have all the steps in place to start pursuing your dream.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for a moving conversation on following your calling. Learn more about how Kathy founded SoleCare for Souls, the importance of listening for inspiration, and how passion can get you through the most challenging days.
Quotes
• “Lord, I'm going to go through and answer the questions I can, and the ones I can't. I'm going to flag according to what I need. I either needed an accountant, legal, or administrative. So, I flagged those, and God brought those people into my life.” (20:51 - 21:07)
• "Don't ever be afraid of what God asks you to do because it's what he created you to do." (42:31 - 42:38)
• “It's not going to be easy. No, it's not easy. But it brings great joy, great inner peace, and great communion with our Lord.” (47:04 - 47:15)
• “There's nothing like having a passion for what you're doing to help you get through those icky days.” (47:24 - 47:29)
• “You just have to keep your eyes open. Don't be getting too big on the dream - just be right at the moment.” (47:44 - 47:55)
• “Some businesses are made to be small, and they're very successful because they're small. One of the discussions I would have with my board of directors over the years is to think about growing bigger. I knew I wasn't the person. I just wanted to go deep.” (47:56 - 48:13)

“If you're out helping others get to their dreams, that will come back to you,” says Nick Curran, Founder, and CEO of Numbers4Nonprofits. When a former boss called Nick for guidance with a non-profit’s financials, Nick was happy to assist. Due to word of mouth, Nick’s work quickly snowballed, leading him to launch Numbers4Nonprofits, an accounting firm that helps non-profits manage their money.
Nick was not an expert in the non-profit finance world, but he was excited to try. Knowing that he could always fall back on traditional accounting, Nick did not fear failure as he built his successful business. Although difficult days are inevitable and management solutions may be needed, Nick reminds entrepreneurs that throughout the good and the bad, you have to show up for your team and dream no matter what.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anway for a conversation on effective leadership. Learn more about how Nick started Numbers4Nonprofits, the challenges of running a business, and why you must keep moving forward every day.

“I was an overnight success. Ten years in the making,” says Dave Chesson, Founder of Kindlepreneur. Dave first started his career in the military and was sent around the world. Realizing that this was not his path, Dave started the book marketing company, Kindlepreneur, which allowed him to follow his true passion: being home with his kids.
It took Dave three years to see more revenue from Kindlepreneur than his military job. Although he could have seen this as a sign to pivot into something else, Dave understood that the road to success is never easy. Wanting to work from home to be with his kids, Dave committed to growing his business no matter how long it took. With Kindlepreneur now a lucrative company, Dave reminds the audience that dipping your toe into too many areas will only get you farther from your goals.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for a straightforward conversation on sticking to your choices. Learn more about Dave’s motivation behind starting Kindlepreuneur, the difference between passions and hobbies, and how there’s no such thing as an overnight success.
Quotes
• “The real definition of passion is that it's something you are willing to suffer for.” (10:47 - 10:53)
• “I was gaining knowledge. I was gaining experience. And when you combine knowledge and experience, you gain intuition. I started to make more intuitive decisions that made things easier with time. So, figure out what your real suffering passion is about, and that could be about the goal, or it can be about the process.” (13:00 - 13:23)
• “When we talk about these failures, I don't look down on them. I don't like to consider them failures because they were stepping stones to where I am today.” (14:26 - 14:35)
• “People will try something. They'll dabble in something. And when they don't see the results they want, they pivot to something else. And then they dabble in that. And then, when they don't see the results they want, they pivot again. As you pivot, you just start going in circles and you never go anywhere because your brain is conditioned to think it didn't work for me, it worked for that guy, but it just didn't work for me immediately.” (34:07 - 34:32)
• “Don't dabble. Make your choice and stick with it. Because if you dabble, you're never really going to see a good ROI on what you're doing unless you get lucky.” (42:49 - 42:57)
• “Treat whatever it is that you've chosen as a skill because skills take hundreds, if not 1000s of hours to build. And when you approach it that way, you will be successful.” (43:08 - 43:19)
• “A lot of people look at me, and they think that I was an overnight success. You know what? I was an overnight success. Ten years in the making!” (44:12 - 44:20)

“As faithful as God is, you have to put a plan to work and then expect God to meet you with your efforts,” says Steven Barnes, Founder and Owner of Salon Barnes & Barnes. Quotes
• “You have to go out and do something. As faithful as God is, you have to put a plan to work and then expect God to meet you with your efforts.” (14:03 - 14:20)
• “I've always said, ‘When you learn something well enough to teach it, it's a completely different level.’ If you can articulate in a way that makes people understand what you're doing and give them confidence in what you're doing, they'll come back.” (21:14 - 21:28)
• “It was an opportunity that God gave me that allowed me to start a business.” (22:53 - 23:06)
• “I was always taught that you find somebody who's successful in what you do and you just do what they did. I have always had a great desire to share the knowledge that I know to give people a foundation. We have to have a real strong foundation in what we do and if we never learn that foundation, you can never build on it. It's just like the work. You got to build your life on the rock.” (23:26 - 23:56)
• “There are probably seasons in everyone's life when humility is the only thing that is going to take them to their next step. To humble themselves and do something that they feel like, maybe be beneath them, and you can grow from that.” (25:26 - 25:49)

“In my essence, I am a firestarter. I am a dream multiplier. I do believe that is my calling in life,” says Jeff Meyer, Move Forward Anyway host and Founder of the Dream Accelerator. After following in his father’s footsteps by becoming a Pastor, Jeff realized that his main goal is to help others become their true selves. Now, Jeff accomplishes this goal through writing, podcasting, and coaching with his Dream Accelerator program. In today’s special episode of Move Forward Anyway, the tables are turned as Jeff’s wife, Amy, interviews him on what inspired him to pursue his dream and why he encourages others to do the same.

A natural firestarter, a nickname he’s carried since college, Jeff understands that life is short and we aren’t just meant to labor. I am happy to be able to provide that.” (14:10 - 14:40)
• “My book that's coming out, The Dream Primer deals with people that know they want something different in their life, but they really have no idea what it might be, and so some of those exercises in the Dream Primer are going to be helpful for those folks. But yes, we do help people from every point of the spectrum.” (19:49 - 20:23)
• “We all need those friends who are lit up around us. They are not just interesting people, but they're interested in us and interested enough to really ask questions, listen to our dream, and provide resources and encouragement.” (21:17 - 21:41)
• “I began my 90 seconds by saying fear will come and I had my audience repeat it. Fear will come, fear will stay, move forward anyway. Your dream must live.” (24:54 - 25:09)
• “Everybody has a dream. Everybody has been designed by the Creator to be a co-creator. I see so many people laboring to make a living and they wait too long.” (32:43 - 33:02)
• “If your heart's racing, your mind is racing with ideas. I would say lean into it. Don't push it down. Don't listen to the dream crushers and lean into it. Ask yourself what if? What if that could happen? And then secondly, know that you are not alone.” (43:06 - 43:31)

• “The dream wasn't given by a committee. I read that yesterday in a post somewhere. And literally in your story, Cornerstone was given to you. It was given to you as a gift, and it's been entrusted to you. So you're stewarding it.” (30:49 - 31:06)

“We will all experience one or maybe several times where we will be gasping for breath,” says John Busacker, co-author of Gasping for Breath. At the beginning of our lives, we walked with God, and breathing felt easy. However, as time went on, we forgot how to breathe and have found ourselves gasping for breath ever since, but according to John, we can learn how to breathe again.
Whether it be physically, emotionally, or spiritually, we will all find ourselves out of breath from time to time. While this can leave us feeling uncomfortable, John tells listeners it is important to understand this is a natural part of life. To recover our breath, John explains that we need to focus on our relationship with God because he is the giver of breath. When we learn to have an active relationship with the Holy Spirit, we can breathe deeper for generations to come.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for another interview with John Busacker. Learn more about the story behind his book and how you can recover your breath and live a fulfilling life through the spirit of God.
Quotes
• “Our book, Gasping for Air is both personal and universal. Personal in the sense that Dave has his own experience. Since he was first diagnosed, his condition has progressed. His health is diminishing and his ability to breathe is diminishing. I'm not currently having that same experience, but I've had my own personal experiences of gasping for breath and so have you. So the other part is universal because every other human on the planet has also had a similar experience.” (16:02-16:39)
• “Whether it's physical, emotional, financial, relational, or professional, we will experience one or maybe several times where we will be gasping for breath. And so that's really what we wanted to lean into with the book is what to do when that happens.” (16:46-17:05)
• “It's important to acknowledge and to accept that sometimes we're gasping for breath and it's a natural thing.” (21:01-21:17)
• “It's good to recover our breath sometimes, but it’s also important to realize that we're not meant to live gasping for breath.” (21:59-22:03)

Debbie Teike has always had a passion for helping people. As a licensed clinical social worker and a pastor’s wife, Debbie started a support group for single parents at her church. There, she saw firsthand how individuals could feel like outsiders at church, leading her to develop a science-meets-spirituality-based program, The Art of the Invitation.
The Art of the Invitation gives participants helpful tools to build meaningful relationships in their community. Although Debbie truly believes in her methods, she recognizes that some of her colleagues might think her program comes across as too counterculture. However, Debbie has never let her insecurities stop her as she continues to follow her passion for helping people feel less alone.
Tune into this week’s episode of the Move Forward Anyways podcast for a compassionate conversation with Jeff and Debbie on helping outsiders feel like insiders. Learn how Debbie works past her insecurities, develops the Art of the Invitation, and trusts God to help the world become a more unified place.
Quotes
• “I felt like there was this missing piece of helping outsiders feel like insiders within church culture. And that was really the genesis of the problem in the initial stages that I wanted to try to solve.” (08:28 - 08:42 | Debbie)
• “Unity is the goal that we can all fit in, that we all have a play at the communion table. Everybody not only can be present together, but we want to be, and we feel a sense of togetherness.” (10:58 - 11:13 | Debbie)
• “I wrestled with the excitement of the possibility and then the insecurity of my own self. I wrestle a lot of times with many insecurities because I think, well, this surely can't be. But I'm kind of odd in that they won't stop me.” (14:58 - 15:24 | Debbie)
• “I'm working on this relationship-building approach that is an intersection of science and spirituality. And I believe in it, and I'm pretty sure I've been piling it for a long time so that I know I have something. But it sounds very counterculture. And actually, it is very counterculture.” (34:58 - 35:16 | Debbie)
• “Some people follow a pattern. They want to read a book to follow a pattern. I really don't need to do that. That isn't part of who I am. So not everybody is going to have that. But this calling of God, you know, everybody's got a calling of God.” (37:56 - 38:14 | Debbie)
• “I think a lot of things in scripture that we think are commands are more of an invitation to just trust, to realize that he's got it. And so it's an invitation, you're being invited, if you're listening to this, and you're listening to a number of these, and you're listening to these guests, and you're going, “I got this idea, I really want to go for it.” I just say, listen to the invitation.” (41:53 - 42:20 | Jeff)

Joel Henry Blaeser has always been a musician. After playing in bands in college, he discovered that his true passion is making electronic music on his laptop, completely on his own. Now, a solo artist and music producer and recently listed on Spotify’s Top Ten List of Indie Artists, Joel is well on his way to fulfilling his dream: living off of his music.
As someone who struggles with self-doubt, Joel acknowledges that it’s tough to know when a song is good enough to share. It can also be tough when there are people around you who may not understand or approve of a creative career path. However, with the support of his talented mentors and an amazing sense of discipline, Joel has been able to work through the obstacles preventing him from making music. As an artist, Joel wants to create work that allows him to be personal and relatable, knowing full well that music can emotionally connect to people and help them escape the difficulties of reality.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for a freeing conversation with Jeff and Joel about letting go of artistic perfection. Learn about how Joel was able to ignore the discouragers, work through the distractions, and believe in his work enough to share it with the world.
Quotes
• “My dream is to live off of the music I make and work on for other people.” (05:34-05:41 | Joel Henry Blaeser)
• “Keeping the ball rolling. I keep reminding myself that music is what I want to do with my short time on Earth. It is the main thing that fulfills me.” (16:06-16:33 | Joel Henry Blaeser)
• “People are threatened by your dream. And the best way to make sure that they feel good about themselves is to keep you from succeeding in realizing your dream. Because then they feel good about themselves, because there's someone else that didn't make it. I call them, ‘Dream crushers.’ And they come right at you face-to-face, boldly and with their arms up.” (27:27-27:53 Jeff Meyer)
• “Music has a purpose for existing. The great artists, big artists, anyone's favorite artists, that music does something for you. I think it was the singer of Coldplay, Chris Martin, who said, ‘When we make an album, we go into a bubble, and we just think about what we would want to listen to. That's how we make something original.’ That's kind of my goal with creating is to make sure that I'm making something good enough that I would listen to. And then from an emotional standpoint, but also obviously a musical standpoint, what our favorite songs do for us, they give us new insight, they get us through hard times, they provide escapism from reality.” (41:01-42:13 | Joel Henry Blaeser)
• “I'm thinking about luxury items, like stuff that would derail my progress and music. And that was because of that external influence of being in a restaurant. And that kind of ties back into living with and living around people that aren't doing what you want to do. The extra mile. It can be a distraction.” (46:12-46:36 | Joel Henry Blaeser)

Ever since high school, Paul Copeland has had a passion for cigars. From watching his dad smoke a cigar while riding the tractor around the farm to creating a cigar club in both high school and college, Paul has always had a cigar-based social life. On today’s episode of Move Forward Anyway, Paul explains how you can turn your everyday passion into a storefront reality.
As an avid cigar connoisseur, Paul always knew he wanted to turn his passion into a business. He then met Country superstar Luke Bryan through cigar clubs, and they began to ponder the idea of opening a cigar shop. Together, they opened Shore Thing Cigars in Florida, close to Luke Bryan’s vacation home. Not only do Paul and Luke communicate well as friends, but they also share a deep-rooted trust as business partners.
When it comes to running his store, Paul explains the importance of always putting your staff first. Paul has a staff made up of all women, and he gushes about what these women have taught him about his marriage, life and how to be a more understanding person.

• “The fear was am I doing something wrong because I am following my dream, following my passion? I’m not doing a ‘real job.’ Thank the Lord there is income coming in as well.”
• “Look at it as surgery. If we go through surgery, the reason we are going through surgery is we have something that needs to be fixed to make it work better. There are risks, and after surgery, you’re not going to feel 100% better, and you have to strengthen yourself. But, you have to understand the surgery was done to fix something. After that therapy wears out, you have the strength and you’re able to move on.” (45:25-45:34)

Adam Griffin never intended to start his own church. After serving many years in the same church, he found himself complacent in his role as right-hand man. It wasn’t until the Lord put him at a crossroads that Adam realized his own insecurities were preventing him from achieving his true calling. Four years later, Adam and his wife planted their church, Eastside Dallas, where he currently serves his community as head pastor.
As a people pleaser, Adam has always been risk averse. Any time he would confront the possibility of leading a church, he would immediately shut the idea down in fear of disappointing his people. Adam had to come to the realization that all his fears were rooted in the idea that the church was built on him, and not the Lord; it wasn’t until he accepted that the church belonged to the Lord that he saw his fears as irrational. Taking a leap of faith has allowed Adam to pursue a passion he never dreamt of while bringing him closer to God. Even though he is consistently plagued by pessimism regarding his strengths, remembering who Christ is, what He’s called him to do, and the support of his loved ones is what motivates him to move forward anyway.
Sometimes your true callings are the dreams that you have been resisting. Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for a humble conversation with Jeff and Adam about overcoming insecurity. Learn more about how God used Adam’s uncertainties to transform him into the passionate pastor he is today.
Quotes
• “Being a father, husband and pastor is what I love to do. It's what gets me up in the morning and gets me fired up all day long.”(01:06-01:13)
• “The Lord waking me up to realize no matter what I do, I am not responsible. Whether it's my kids' hearts and salvation or whether it's the people that I'm discipling, it’s the Lord's work. And so, I feel set free from that burden to recognize that's not what the Lord asked me to do.” (06:58-07:12)
• “Sometimes the dream comes from an unexpected place where you maybe even resisted the thought before.” (10:32-10:41)
• “I get to give full credit to God because this has not been something that has been a strategic pros and cons list plan that I've had since childbirth, it's something the Lord has continued to just flower and just blossom in my life.” (13:28-13:40)
• “The way that I move forward anyway is having people around me that remind me what's true about me and what's true about what I've been called to do.” (18:07-18:15)

Twenty years ago, Tami Fleming worked as Host Jeff Meyer’s office manager. Since then, she’s had two daughters, undergone a divorce and joined several organizations to aid the unhoused population of Madison. Inspired to help those that are suffering in a tangible way, Tami started out by giving out cookies on State Street. A passion was ignited, and Tami began volunteering for Friends of the State Street Family Homeless Shelter and Shelter from the Storm, a transitional home for single moms. Tami also developed a business proposal for the Rapid Rehousing program, allowing recently displaced families to find apartments and settle back into their lives. More recently, Tami launched Those Flippin’ Flemings, a vintage furniture refurbishing business. It is undeniable that Tami is just getting started as her “Movement of Compassion” grows.
On today’s episode, Tami and Jeff discuss how you don’t need a Ph.D. in social work to impact people’s lives. Tami’s strength comes from trusting God and developing deep connections with the population she serves. Through listening to the needs of others, Tami has been able to effectively gain the trust of her unhoused peers to propel them forward. Tami also recognizes that no one accomplishes anything alone. By surrounding herself with a team of therapists, opportunity coaches and caseworkers, she has provided the services needed to stabilize (and save) lives. Although there’s been insecurity along the way, Tami credits God for making her dreams of helping others a reality.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for an inspiring discussion between Tami and Jeff about listening to God when following your passion. Not everyone has a ten-year plan or everything figured out, but following simple steps and trusting the process can lead to life-changing results.
Quotes
• “We get those little winks from God, you know. Like, hey, you’re doing what I want you to do. Don’t worry about it. I’ll take care of what you need.” (15:12-15:18)
• “I think what I’ve learned - first of all, trust God. Because if you’re doing what he wants you to do, he will show up. He will show up, and he will make it work. I came from a place where I thought I had to know everything and do everything by myself, and I couldn’t ask for help because that would mean I couldn’t do it. And that’s not how we’re supposed to be - we’re supposed to work with our brothers and sisters because none of us can do this alone.” (20:20-20:48)
• “You don’t have to have a Ph.D. in social work to be able to help someone in a practical way that’s experiencing homelessness. You know, you do something practical, and you just listen. You ask them questions about what they're talking about and try to understand where they’re coming from and if there’s something practical they need, be that person for them.” (31:35-31:52)
• “You don’t have to be wealthy or perfect or have a Ph.D. to be able to do something really meaningful in the world or in the life of another person.” (57:57-58:07)

Tommy Woodard and Eddie James, aka The Skit Guys, have been passionate about writing and producing skits since they were kids. When Eddie began getting close to God during his high school years, the duo set their sights on writing skits that represented their Christian faith. Since then, Tommy and Eddie have produced multiple viral skits and currently have dreams to further their passion in the realm of movie production.
While the pair has found success through this work, the journey has been anything but easy. The Skit Guys share with host Jeff Meyer that there were many times when their reality was completely at odds with their dreams. Between several missed shows and depleted bank accounts, the two were forced to question whether or not they should step back and focus their attention on their youth ministries. In order to move forward, The Skit Guys had to embrace the challenges they faced and the opportunity to do what they loved. Tommy and Eddie encourage any listeners who may be undergoing similar hurdles to say yes to their dreams and to never stop talking about them with God.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for a conversation with The Skit Guys about chasing your dreams. Learn more about the origins of their business and how their relentless pursuit of a passion paved the way for God to turn their dreams into a reality.
Quotes
• “We hit that sweet spot of live events, and the internet grew when it happened. And in our minds, God used that to catapult us to where our ministries have gone.” (12:35-12:45)
• “I think the church should be the best at helping people discover their dreams and use their gifts and skills and help them get to a place where they can launch that. And then we can celebrate God's work through people.” (17:15-17:30)
• “We’ve said before, do what you can with what you have, where you are and leave the results up to God. And so, all we knew to do was to keep doing what we could, where we were, and then leave the results up to Him.” (22:55-23:11)
• “The dream doesn't always look like we think that dream is going to look like. But our job is to continue to be faithful through those days, and trust that God's going to be the one to bring the dream into fruition.” (51:07- 51:18)
• “If dreams are a gift from God, then don't stop talking to Him about them.” (58:45-58:51)

“I am a better mom when I get to do something that I am happy doing,” says Lauren Nietubicz, owner of Niet Designs, a custom woodworking company. On this week’s episode, Lauren talks with host Jeff Meyer about how she continues to find joy in her work after the devastating loss of her husband, Chris.
Lauren has always been a stay-at-home mom for her children. After Chris passed away, she briefly contemplated getting a “normal” full-time job to support her family, but she quickly realized this shift wouldn't allow her to be the mother she wants to be. Lauren feels the happiest when she is able to be with her kids and share with them what she loves most: woodworking. Having her children experience her joy is an incomparable gift from God, and Lauren has placed her full trust in His plan.
Lauren emphasizes the importance of surrounding yourself with supportive people regardless of what path you choose to pursue. It can be challenging to start something new, especially as an adult, and that’s when you need encouragement the most. Whenever Lauren finds herself doubting her abilities or underselling her products, her family is there to boost her confidence and remind her of her value.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for a conversation with Lauren about allowing yourself to harness your abilities and being proud of who God made you to be!
Quotes
• “To have young kids is an easy way to keep moving forward because you can't stop. I can't just give up, I can’t not make dinner, or pay the bills, or make sure they have the right clothes for school. We have to keep going.” (18:17-18:33)
• “I want to have joy in whatever I do for work. I know that's not always practical, and I know it would make more sense for me to take a full-time job that has benefits, pays more, or is consistent. But I think I am a better mom when I get to do something that I am happy doing.” (25:25-25:45)
• “I think it's really important to find pride in the things that you are able to do.” (27:10-27:18)

Throughout her years in business, there have been many times where Laura has been uncomfortable. Whether it be personal or professional hardships, Laura explains that getting out of your comfort zone is a necessary part of the entrepreneurial journey. Quotes
• “Doubting your ability to accomplish something is a dangerous territory to be in because beginning leather working or any sort of hobby or interest or business where you’re creating something, there’s going to be a steep initial learning curve….Those first couple items for a lot of people do not turn out looking like something you would want to carry every day or show off.” (17:16-17:53)
• “I was laid off work for seven weeks in the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020….Quickly over that time, with a lot of free time and space to do things, I was able to put a lot of time in working in this garage and developing that skillset and improving my craft, which was a great opportunity because had I not been forced off of work for seven weeks...I would’ve probably never taken the time to develop this into what it has become.” (18:58-19:43)
• “That’s been a great benefit to maintain [our] full-time jobs….In desperation, I don’t make the best choices long-term. I see right out in front of me, but not much past that. So being able to be in a more comfortable space regarding our financial situation has allowed us to take more risk I would say as far as investing in this than I would have been comfortable with had I just jumped into it.” (20:55-21:43)
• “[My company solves the problem of] goods that break down quickly and custom one-on-one interaction where we can personalize something to your needs….All of the things that I make and sell out of leather I offer a lifetime guarantee on the craftsmanship and the leather….I want that guarantee to never be needed. I want to create those products so that I don’t get anything back.” (27:27-28:25)
• “My fears all along this time we’ve been married have been the fear of him not settling into something. And so, it’s taken a lot of experimenting for him to settle into something, and I’ve had to move through that fear of is he just going to keep wandering in the pursuit of what he wants to do?....But I see his fear come out in not wanting to showcase or push his products and the things he can make….Are they going to be good enough for people?” (30:29-31:48)

“No action, no traction,” says Arik Johnson, Founder of Aurora WDC. “Time is the only scarce resource. What difference does your insight really make if you don’t do anything with it?” Arik Johnson started Aurora WDC at the age of 25. At the time, all he knew was that he wanted to dive deeper into the world of Competitive Intelligence (CI). So, rather than overthinking every step of the process, he simply created a website and started helping other companies achieve the insights they needed to move forward with confidence.
Seven years into his entrepreneurial journey, Arik was joined by his brother, Derek Johnson, who is now the CEO of Aurora WDC. At the time, Derek had been working in the world of finance, but was struggling to achieve the mobility he desired. He explains that he was also inspired to make this shift by the memory of his parents, who had passed away when Derek and Arik were relatively young. Derek knew that his parents would have wholeheartedly encouraged him to team up with his brother, and so he did. Now, not only do the brothers run a thriving business, but they are also constantly finding new ways to expand upon their shared goals.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for a conversation with Arik and Derek Johnson about overcoming your fears and acting upon your dreams. Learn how Arik and Derek turn companies’ debilitating weaknesses into their largest strengths, why choosing not to decide still constitutes a choice, and how host Jeff Meyer has helped these brothers learn to play catch again, both in business and in life.
Quotes:
• “The competitive intelligence world has always traditionally been driven by...an obsession with competitors and how to get a leg up. And that’s wrong, that’s a broad misconception…. Competitors are important, but competitors are not your enemies. Competitors make you better, competitors are an opportunity for you to elevate your own expectations of your performance so that you suck less.” (4:23-4:57)
• “Losers never figure out what their frailties are, and they end up making very, very predictable mistakes. And it’s just that nobody’s really reduced to practice and articulate what that system really looks like.” (20:16-20:28)
• “God has bigger plans for every one of us! And it’s up to us whether we seek out those plans, notice them when they are found, act on them, respond the way God is leading us to and, then when the results happen, celebrate it with those around us….That is the sequence of missionary discipline that is the true north in my life.” (24:45-25:11)
• “The thing that I love about our space is that we have the opportunity to really deliver impact if we partner with clients and our liaisons at those client organizations who understand what level of humility they need to bring into the equation in order to be able to take that level of insight and then turn it into action.” (30:50-31:18)
• "That is my one prayer: that everybody who hears this podcast will discover what God made them for." (48:49-48:55)

Thirteen years ago, after spending his entire career in corporate, Chris Lalomia decided he had had enough. He was drained, stressed, and unable to be his authentically extraverted and present self in his corporate role. He may have had his dream home and his dream car, but he wasn’t living his dream life.
Chris didn’t know much beyond that fact that he needed to get out of his corporate job. So he started surrounding himself with successful entrepreneurs in order to conduct some hands-on research. He tried starting a community bank, buying an engineering company and going into construction development before finally settling on an entrepreneurial venture: The Trusted Toolbox. In fact, Chris actually got the idea to start a handyman service from a friend, who casually noted how much Chris loved to fix things!
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway to hear more about Chris’s entrepreneurial vision and how it continues to evolve. Learn how Chris started his business without even realizing it (his business phone wasn’t even hooked up yet!), why you don’t need to have all the details ironed out in order to get your business off the ground, and why Chris never makes major decisions on Mondays. You’ll even get a sneak preview of Chris’s book, FROM THE ZOO TO THE WILD: Your Guide to Entrepreneurial Freedom and Wealth, which you can purchase using the link below!
Quotes:
• “If you don’t do it, you’ll never do it, and you’ll always wonder if you could have done it.” (4:23-4:27)
• “Security is a very intoxicating reality that sometimes keeps us stuck in not living our full life….Fear is a powerful motivator to stay where you are.” (5:05-5:25)
• “The fear of me being 60 going, ‘I wish I could have, I wish I did’...drove me more. One of the definitions of success that I started to develop for myself was I didn’t need the big house, the country club, the fancy car. I need to know that I could use my whole brain.” (5:52-6:22)
• “Corporate America does not reward an entrepreneurial mindset. It does not reward the take-a-chance, the optimism. They always reward pessimism and rearview mirror thinking.” (7:17-7:27)
• “I remember at seventeen telling [my dad], ‘I hope one day to have a business like grandma and grandpa. And he looked at me and said, ‘Hopes and wishes are in Disney and in fairy tales. If you want to do something, you better write it down. And I did!....I had that piece of paper up until my last office move!” (9:51-10:19)
• “My why, my what was not about, ‘Hey, I’m going to be a trainer and help people’s livelihoods.’ My what was ‘I gotta fix some stuff, make some money and get going.’” (17:28-17:36)
• “Find your way to find your play because that passion is going to really work out.” (38:23-38:29)

“Who are we not to do it, if God has called us and placed it in us?” Partners in life, ministry, and business, Shikina and Chris Bodley felt a calling to use their skills to help their Chicago community. Shikina, a speech-language pathologist, and her husband Chris, a pastor, have spent many years navigating the path of raising godly sons. This experience fostered within them the desire to help other members of their community find a similar sense of holy purpose, which led the couple to found Ephas. While it is still in its infant stages, this program aims to add a measure of faith and grace to anyone in the community who might need it.
Shikina and Chris believe that everyone has a calling, and that’s not unique to the church. The couple explains that even within the church, members shouldn’t be afraid to venture beyond the physical walls of the ministry. After all, if we take Jesus as a model, he accomplished the vast majority of his work outside of the physical church! Although their journey has been grounded in faith, Shikina and Chris have wisdom for individuals from all walks of life, regardless of religion. Their unique perspectives on spirituality, leadership and identity are invaluable to any listener.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway for an engaging and powerful conversation between Chris, Shikina, and host Jeff Meyer about holy purpose. Through their personal stories and poignant insights, Shikina and Chris will inspire you to follow your dreams, so you can be present when they are finally realized.
Quotes:
• “Out of it came Ephas….It means ‘measure’ in Greek….In the gospel it talks about a measure of your faith, and so we looked at it from the standpoint of how we could add a measure of faith, a measure of grace. In all those areas, what could we add to be able to incorporate and empower people to live lives that are going to be purposeful and intentional and practical?” (6:34-7:00)
• “I think, too, one of the things initially is getting over...this idea of limiting beliefs, thinking that you have to be an expert in all things in order to be helpful to people versus understanding that God has given you the measure of faith, the ephas, in order to bless other people.” (14:02-14:23)
• “We have an old framework as well, so we think it has to be in the church, when very often, when you look at Jesus as a model, he was rarely in the church doing ministry so to speak! So it’s important for us to think about the idea...that maybe the vision that God is birthing in you is for you to do outside of the Church, but taking the kingdom with you as you go.” (20:08-20:40)
• “I think that you don’t just see visions only in the church. You see a preferred future, you see what could be. And I think that all of us can see things that could be, and it just burns inside of us. And I think for us to ignore it, that something will die.” (24:44-25:03)
• “Do not dismiss the day of small beginnings. Regardless of where you are, God is there….For me, that has always been encouraging, that even if I was in a proverbial pit, it was important that God said, ‘I’m with you,’ and that God can still bring things alive even when you’re not at the finish line, but you’re in process.” (42:06-42:41)
• “You’re alive right now for a reason, for a purpose. Do not doubt what God has started in you. Allow him to finish….Don’t block your blessings by being a hater on yourself!” (43:44-44:05)

“Do I have time for a dream?” asks Elizabeth Polzin, wife, mother, and full-time staff member at Concordia University Wisconsin. Elizabeth met Jeff via the Dream Accelerator, after she realized a hole in the children’s literature market: there was very little about the Lutheran idea of vocation. Ironically, Elizabeth’s passion for vocation brought her into a new role as an aspiring children’s author.
For Elizabeth, the process of following her dream involved a lot of fear. Beyond the perils of imposter syndrome, she struggled to find time and energy to make her dream happen as a working mother. But the support of her community, and the power of speaking her dream into existence helped Elizabeth overcome that fear - and today she has a working draft of her very first children’s book.
This week on the Move Forward Anyway podcast, we are talking about the power of dreams, community, and what it means to pursue something you never imagined.
Quotes:
“The world needs your dream. And it begins with the next step. There is no timeline except the one you are putting on yourself.” (28:42-28:54)
“My dream does not only have significance to me. Chances are, if you are dreaming it, it is very likely that your dream has significance to someone else.” (29:10-29:20)

“I wrote my first novel by accident,” says Evan Law, immigration attorney and novel writer. After failing the Bar Exam three times, Evan began writing a novel that he felt encapsulated many of the fundamental legal principles that the Bar aims to test. Evan then took the Bar Exam for a fourth time and found that he was far more prepared for this new attempt than the others, primarily due to his writing.
Evan’s ultimate success after several failures inspired him to help others avoid the feelings of stress and emotional defeat he had experienced throughout the test-taking process. He has now written and published two novels, which contain over 130 principles of law between them, core ideas that every aspiring lawyer should know. While Evan first started writing his stories as a side project, mainly aimed at helping himself, he now sees a broader purpose in these books. In fact, the books are currently being turned into movies, which Evan hopes to incorporate into a larger course for law students called Lawflix.
Tune into this week’s episode of Move Forward Anyway to learn more about how Evan transformed his Bar Exam failures into an unexpected career path. This conversation about unforeseen opportunities, overcoming fear, and taking chances to pursue your dreams is sure to inspire you to create meaningful change in your own life.

“I’ve always been interested in people’s stories,” says John Busacker, a writer, speaker, and entrepreneur. John began his work as a financial advisor, but his interest in stories and the “life” parts of financial advising lead him to leadership coaching.
As a leadership coach, John is interested in the questions we ask each other, and ourselves. “The best leaders,” he says, “ask the best questions.” John’s strong connection to his faith empowered him to look at Jesus’s questions as inspiration for how we can live in the grey area, and grapple with questions that don’t have clear answers in our lives and in our work.
Tune in to this episode of Move Forward Anyway to hear host Jeff Meyers chat with his long-time pal about determining not just your net worth but your “Life’s Worth,” becoming a story-focused leader, and John’s new book Gasping for Breath, which talks about how to find solace in life’s hardest moments, when you feel you can’t come up for air.

“No one’s gonna hit you as hard as life is,” says Craig Mellendorf, founder of SFC Estate Coaching. “But when you get the hit, get back up.” Craig knows this lesson better than most - he was let go unexpectedly after 27 years of teaching and had to find a new path. In this episode of Move Forward Anyway, Jeff talks with Craig, his former basketball coach and life-long friend, about how Craig moved forward anyway and founded a business that has helped support more than 167 charitable organizations since 2015.
When Craig was first laid off, he was side hustling. He was a personal trainer, and worked on SFC Estate Coaching, a company that connects families making estate plans with charitable organizations, on the side. Even more remarkable is the fact that, as Craig says, “I learned everything I know about business from teaching it.” He was teaching business education when he was laid off -- which he sees as part of the path God was laying for him -- and learned how to develop his own app from a startup. He has always been learning his way toward this moment, and that’s his lesson for listeners of all ages looking to start something new.
Since Craig took the leap in 2015, he has helped 750 families donate more than 75 million dollars to 167 charitable organizations. In this episode, he talks not only about the importance of his work, but also about the power of getting up again, even when life throws you a particularly nasty punch.

“Even if you’re a small business owner or a solopreneur, you can’t do it alone,” says Hallie Ringhand, founder of New U Today, a nutrition and coaching business centered on the emotional, spiritual, and physical aspects of wellness and pain management. Hallie talks with host Jeff Meyer about how she perseveres through hardship by reminding herself of the people who drive her - both her clients, and the people who inspired her to take this leap in the first place.
Both Hallie and Jeff agree that in their business ventures, asking for help was the key to success. You are always learning as you go in business, and that means finding community that can guide you through hardship. Hallie has faced many of these challenges during her career, and wondered if she should just quit and go work for someone else again. But then she remembers the WHO that got her here: the clients she wants to help, the problems she wants to solve, and the people, like her grandmother who survived the Holocaust and her mother who raised her alone, that taught her how to move forward anyway.
Tune in this week for stories of resilience in entrepreneurship. And remember: you don’t have to go it alone.

“There’s unity through our diversity,” says Paul Castiglione, the founder of Open Kitchens Project and risk taker of epic proportions. On this episode of Move Forward Anyway, host Jeff Meyer talks with Paul about his amazing project, which seeks to form communities across racial, ethnic, economic, and political lines through food. Paul talks about his organization, which coordinates pop-up dinner salon events to connect event organizers with Black and immigrant chefs to eat and facilitate conversation. Or, as their mission says: “Meet new friends, try new dishes, learn about other cultures, explore interests, network, and maybe even discover romance at an Open Kitchens event." He also shares his journey of leaving behind a $10,000 a month salary in corporate America to start this project, and how it changed his idea of what he really needs to be happy.
In this episode, Paul shares inspiring stories about “ah-ha” moments that came from Open Kitchens events. He also talks about how he is still learning to pivot in the aftermath of Covid-19, which shut down all his live events and forced him online. Paul’s story is one that can inspire anyone with a dream that is deeply valuable, but seems hard to monetize.

“If you wait until you have all the answers, you’re never going to do it,” says Justin Rossow, author, entrepreneur, pastor, and dreamer extraordinaire. On this episode of Move Forward Anyway, host Jeff Meyer talks with Justin about his book Delight!, and the emotions he overcame to start Next Step Press and publish his first book.
What was Justin’s biggest struggle as a fledgling entrepreneur? Overcoming grief. Not the grief of losing a person, but the grief of what we “should” have done, the opportunities we believe we missed. And there were other griefs too. In order to make his dream come true, Justin had to ask his family for support. They sold their house, and his wife went back to work so the family could have health insurance and a steady income. Justin shares the ways he continues to process and let go of these griefs, so he can take the next small step forward -- a small step that has led him, so far, to a book that is receiving great critical acclaim.
Tune in this week to discover Justin’s journey, and learn more about how to practice delight in your daily discipleship.

On today’s episode of Move Forward Anyway, Jeff talks with a very special guest -- his wife, Amy Meyer. Amy is the mother of four children, a coach, a world-renowned speaker, and most recently an author of the book Snapshots and Stories.
Amy has always been a writer, but it wasn’t until she was celebrating Jeff’s book launch that her friends started asked her, “So, when are you going to finish your book?” Jeff interviews Amy about her unconventional and joy-filled writing process, and the reason that she landed on a book that combines her personal stories with journaling prompts.
For Amy, writing her story down was just the impetus to share a love of journaling with the world. She says, “I believe everybody has a story. It doesn’t have to be a dramatic big story, but it’s your story.” Amy often writes to God, but even for non-Christian readers and listeners, journaling can change your life -- from gratitude lists to naming emotions to processing hardship and celebrating joy.
Tune in this week to learn a little bit more about how you can write to remember - and how Amy’s dream of writing a book opened up new pathways in her life and work.
