If the alligator in the sewers doesn't get you, then the werewolf of Tarker's Mills might! Join us for a look at two films we got to see on the big screen recently thanks to Alamo Drafthouse in Raleigh, NC! First up, we dive deep for a look at Lewis Teague's Alligator, written by John Sayles and starring the late great Robert Forster, from 1980.
Then, we break out The Peace Maker baseball bat and load up with Silver Bullet (1985), a movie Garrett and I covered a while back in a movie commentary episode (Episode 34, Uncle Red's Done Got Another Divorce). Seeing it on the big screen at Alamo was a dream come true, as this was one of the many films we couldn't see on the big screen because it was rated R and we were underage!

In this episode, recorded in less than 20 minutes, Chris talks about a nostalgic favorite of his from the early 80s, Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983). Besides being a Bradbury fan, Chris had an English teacher (Coach Vinson!) who nurtured the love for Bradbury by showing the movie in class over two days. Kids of the 80s and 90s remember how movie day in class was like getting a surprise vacation.
With performances from Jonathan Pryce, Jason Robards, Diane Ladd, and one of Chris' favorites, Pam Grier (Jackie Brown), SWTWC isn't a great movie, but it's a great look at Disney Studios in transition between family movies and movies with more fantasy and horror elements in them. Check it out if you've never seen it, or watch again if it's been a while.
And as always, thanks for listening!

Chris goes behind the scenes and gives listeners enough detail to hopefully pique their curiosity and check out this underrated and overlooked vampire movie that has a Western and film noir flare. Not to be missed: Performances by Lance Henriksen and the late, great Bill Paxton, whose life we covered back in Episode 31.
Plus, this week's snack suggestion is a mixed drink, so if alcohol isn't your thing either personally or legally, I suggest going with your favorite Halloween candy treat for this one. Either way, get your snacks and drinks for watching Near Dark!

This week, we lost acting legend David Warner to cancer. Chris talks about some of Warner’s accolade-worthy film performances in The Omen, Time After Time, Time Bandits, and Tron. Warner is also known for his animated performance as Batman’s nemesis Raʼs al Ghul in Batman: The Animated Series. Terrific actor who will be missed deeply. This week's bite-site snack episode takes a look at director Robert Altman's neo-noir classic, The Long Goodbye, an adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel. The movie moves the story from the 1950s to the early 1970s. Hard-boiled private eye Philip Marlowe takes on 70s Los Angeles and a plot involving a friend who may have murdered his wife, a mob boss looking for stolen money, unpleasant cops, a drunken novelist and his enigmatic wife, and a doctor not afraid to humiliate his patient in front of party guests—to name a few. Although not well received when it was originally released, Altman's take on the private eye movie has been hailed in recent years as a classic and a cornerstone film of the neo-noir genre.

As Garrett puts it, this is a somber episode where we say goodbye to two acting greats: Fred Ward and Ray Liotta. Both had a history of playing tough, grizzled guys in film and television and both were geniuses in their work. They made looking tough easy, but they were able to make you care about the characters they played. Fred Ward and Ray Liotta will be missed and we here at TMMSP extend our deepest sympathies to their families and friends.

Chris and Garrett each offer up their three favorite movies from 1980 to 1983. You'll have to listen to find out which movies! We can tell you that all three of Chris' favorites take place in 1982—a pivotal year in which Chris' love for film bloomed! Garrett's choices are in some ways Chris' favorites too, but they made it a point not to pick the same films. Fortunately, 1980-1983 are chock full of great movies!

After a brief delay, we're back with our second episode of 2022 but it's on a sad note. Last week, we lost comedian Bob Saget at the age of 65. While most know Saget for his work on America's Funniest Home Videos and Full House, Saget was a stand-up comic who was just enjoying the beginnings of what appeared to be a new chapter in his life before his untimely passing. We here at TMMSP remember Bob and send our condolences to his wife, children, family, and friends. Here's to you, Bob. We hope you and Norm Macdonald are enjoying the afterlife together.

Merry Christmas from the TMMSP! Chris and Garrett serve up their commentary for their Christmas comedy favorite, Elf, from 2003. This movie has special significance for the team (mostly Chris) because when they saw this in theaters originally, Chris was in the company of his future Mrs, his very own Jovie.
Chris and Garrett cover a lot of trivia from the film, the alleged reason why no sequel was ever made, and Chris can't stop doing his horrible Leon Redbone impression during certain scenes. If you're like us, Elf is a holiday favorite that never fails to elicit laughs and warm and sweet feelings like a plate of spaghetti and maple syrup garnished with Pop-Tarts, M&Ms, candy canes, candy corns, and more. Make sure you avoid the naughty list and join us for this Christmas confectionary cinematic delight!

TMMSP remembers legendary lyricist and composer Stephen Sondheim, who died yesterday at age 91. Largely considered a titan of Broadway, Sondheim also contributed to film as a composer and lyricist for movies such as Reds, Dick Tracy, and adaptations of Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, and West Side Story. Sondheim also dabbled in writing for television and film with Topper and The Last of Sheila. Sondheim spent most of his career redefining musical theater and he leaves behind a monumental legacy of achievement. We here at TMMSP salute Mr. Sondheim and celebrate his work!

Chris and Garrett lock and load for some werewolf hunting this Spooktober with Stephen King's Silver Bullet from 1985. The fourth collaboration between King and producer Dino DeLaurentis (and the third to be shot in and around Wilmington, North Carolina) Silver Bullet has got everything you want in a horror movie: cheesy 80s special effects, a gun- and baseball bat-toting posse, Corey Haim in a turbo wheelchair, and Gary Busey doing what he does best: chewing up the scenery with his high energy performance as Uncle Red. Keep an eye out for acting stalwarts Terry O'Quinn (The Stepfather, Lost, Patriot) and Bill Smitrovich (Manhunter, Ghosts of Mississippi, Life Goes On) in this fun 80s horror film. Grab your legally acquired copy of the movie and join Chris and Garrett for their movie commentary of Stephen King's Silver Bullet!

Join Chris and Garrett as they kick off their month-long Spooktober celebration with a series of movie commentaries of some frightfully furry films with John Landis' An American Werewolf in London from 1981. Featuring the special effects and makeup magic of the legendary Rick Baker and starring David Naughton, Griffin Dunne, and Jenny Agutter, An American Werewolf in London offers a dose of dark humor with its horrific subject matter. The movie paved the way for future horror comedies in the years that followed (Shaun of the Dead, for example). We lost a comedy genius this week with the passing of the great Norm Macdonald. A Saturday Night Live veteran, Norm was a polarizing figure at times, but no one could deny his talent and ability to make even the most mundane jokes side-splitting. Chris and Garrett recall their fond memories of watching Norm deliver blistering jokes about OJ and the Clintons in the 90s, his standup, his movies, and his more recent work in podcasts and a Netflix talk show. Join us as we remember Norm Macdonald.

In the 1980s, Stephen King was a hot commodity in Hollywood. Studios couldn't get enough of his novels and short stories. When King published Different Seasons in 1982, it featured "The Body," a story about four boys taking a secret journey through rural Maine to locate the body of a boy killed in a train accident. The film rights were quickly purchased, and after some initial pre-production issues, Rob Reiner directed this coming-of-age story that blends nostalgia, sentimentality, and brotherhood into a sweet and moving film. Featuring River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell, and Kiefer Sutherland, Stand by Me (an alternate title to avoid audiences confusing the film as a bodybuilding or sex film) was a huge hit with moviegoers. It's still considered one of the best adaptations of a Stephen King story. Grab your copy of the movie and join us for our audio commentary!

This week, Chris and Garrett wrap up their summer commentary tribute to John Hughes with an audio commentary for Some Kind of Wonderful from 1987. Written and produced by John Hughes, the movie was directed by Howard Deutsch (Pretty in Pink). When Pretty in Pink's ending was reshot, Hughes wasn't pleased with the results so he wrote this movie as a way to get the ending he preferred, but not without making a few changes along the way. Which movie do you prefer? Grab your legally acquired copy of the movie and join us for our audio commentary of this teen comedy-drama classic from the 80s!

This week, Chris and Garrett continue their nonstop summer commentary tribute to John Hughes with an audio commentary for Pretty in Pink from 1986. Written and produced by John Hughes, the movie was directed by future Mr. Lea Thompson, otherwise known as Howard Deutsch. This film is also the last Hughes production with Molly Ringwald. Featuring terrific supporting characters played by James Spader as the despicable Steff, Annie Potts as the music shop manager Iona, and Harry Dean Stanton as Jack, grieving and out-of-work father to Ringwald's Andie. And, of course, terrific performances from the leads, Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, and Andrew McCarthy. This one has a lot of heart, plus controversy concerning its ending, which we talk about at great length. Celebrate the movie's 35th anniversary with us! Grab your legally acquired copy of the movie and join us for our audio commentary of this teen comedy-drama classic from the 80s!

Between The Terminator and Predator, Arnold Schwarzenegger found time to shoot this standard 80s action cop flick with a pretty solid cast of top performers, including Darren McGavin, Kathryn Harrold, Robert Davi, and Sam Wanamaker. This is one of those flicks that Chris and Garrett remember either watching on cable, or seeing it at someone’s house as a 99-cent VHS movie rental. This film doesn’t aspire to anything other than giving Arnold the chance to fire off some one-liners, fire off a few rounds, and chew some scenery in the process. Raw Deal, folks. Come for the young Arnold poised on the edge of superstardom, stay for our insightful commentary on the movie and our snacks for the evening.
