Laura Fox joins host Doug Crowe to discuss her career as a ghostwriter and the unique skills involved in writing books. She accidentally fell into ghostwriting when a client asked if she could turn their disorganized notes into a manuscript. Laura found she enjoyed the creativity and anonymity of capturing another author's voice.

Laura focuses on uplifting topics like spiritual, health, and business leadership books. Her process involves at least one in-depth interview per chapter to understand the author's background and philosophy. Then, she drafts a chapter a week, followed by revising the full draft together with the author. Laura recommends vetting potential clients' commitment to finishing their book, as rushed timelines rarely produce quality results. In this episode of The Author Your Brand podcast, host Doug Crowe interviews Steve Duke, an entrepreneur, business advisor, and author. They discuss the importance of exit strategy planning for business owners and common pitfalls to avoid.

Steve emphasizes being prepared for unplanned exits, which account for 50% of transitions. He advises monitoring the bottom line over the top line, avoiding over dependence on the owner, key employees, or major customers. Steve recommends replacing yourself early and cross-training staff as a backup. He suggests assessing your situation to identify risks but notes planning does not have to mean imminent exit implementation. Steve shares a story of an owner who grew too fast by overly focusing on sales, ran out of cash, and went out of business. He highlights that even small businesses can apply strategies like process documentation. Steve advocates working with an advisor to evaluate your company's value and opportunities objectively. The key takeaway is that strategic planning is crucial to maximize value for a future exit.

In today's world, more and more people are looking for ways to create passive income. One way to do this is through real estate investing. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Charlie Wessel, an Entrepreneur Of 15+ years and a real estate investor who has been successful in creating passive income through real estate. Here's what he had to say:

Real estate investment is a good investment even with the recession for certain reasons. One reason is that people will always need a place to live, and businesses will always need a place to conduct their operations from. Consequently, there will always be a demand for real estate, regardless of economic conditions. Another reason is that real estate tends to be a relatively stable asset, meaning it doesn't fluctuate in value as much as other assets such as stocks and bonds. This stability makes it an ideal long-term investment, particularly during periods of economic turbulence. Finally, while the value of the real estate may go down in a recession, it usually doesn't decline as much as the stock market. This means that investors who diversify their portfolio with real estate are less likely to experience significant losses during an economic downturn. Ultimately, these factors make real estate investment a good choice for those looking to diversify their portfolio and protect their wealth during times of economic uncertainty.

If you are looking for an alternative way to do investment, reach out to Charlie and email him at charlie@thestockalternative.com or visit the website https://thestockalternative.com/

“There’s no money in books”

True or false? For most authors, this is definitely true. With over 2,000,000 NEW books each year, it’s increasingly difficult to make significant sales. This is why most non-fiction authors position their book as a tool for their consulting, services, or products.

Strategic authors, however, laser-target their audience and move books by the thousands. This training outlines a specific method to sell 10,000, 20,000 or more books to a single entity

“Afformations" is what Noah St. John wants his clients to ingrain in their lives. This is different from the positive affirmations many psychologists would encourage people to do. The importance of asking oneself the "why questions" will lead to connecting his/her inner and outer game. Our inner game is how well we communicate with ourselves and the outer game is how well we share with the outside world. In this episode, John emphasizes the importance of both factors in being successful and truly happy.

Key Takeaways:

  1. You cannot directly access the subconscious mind…[but] you can indirectly access it.
  2. What I teach is the inner game and outer game. The inner game is everything that happens between your ears that you can't see directly, but it affects everything that you do.
  3. Afformation is the foundation of everything I do with the inner game.

  2. The root of procrastination tends to be discomfort, there's usually something at the root you're not comfortable with. (8:40)
  3. Make sure that you're focused on your wins. Like, if it's something that sounds like a cliche, just do it. (24:45)

We are often told that it takes 21 days to create a habit, but what if it was a lie?

Habits are routine behaviors that we repeat regularly and oftentimes subconsciously. They say harnessing its power is a great way to pursue success since it frees up our brain's capacity to make better decisions.

In today's episode, our guest Blaine Oelkers will share with us his 21 Second Habits, a process that allows us to create a habit in 21 seconds, not 21 days. He will also teach us how to compress time through his 30-minute hour which will help us get an hour's worth of stuff done in 30 minutes of compressed time.

Blaine is a TEDx Speaker and leading authority in personal implementation and consistency. He is America's only Chief Results Officer®. He's a habit master with documented streaks of 1516 days in a row and counting! As a top LinkedIn Connector, he has over 25,000 1st-level connections. Blaine graduated from Purdue University and Stanford University's Social Entrepreneurship Program. He is powered by Selfluence, a personal development, and training company.

Key takeaways:

  1. We’ll call it a little bit of a hack that has a few steps to it, where you can create habits instantly I say 21 seconds… You already have the power to influence yourself like, nothing new that you'd have to learn you already know how to do it, you just kind of forgot a little bit. (2:59)

  2. The building of the new habits hasn't been that troublesome now the elimination of bad habits, that's more difficult for people but adding a new habit to something you already do has been fairly easy. (14:12)

  3. Well, the latest research says it's about 60 days, for the neurons, to really wire in and be automatic, but when you link it to something that's already automatic, then then you're in good shape. You just need a cue a reminder, when you go to do the thing that's already been there for 60 days. (20:24)

Some people love salesmen and some people shy away from them. When you walk inside a store and a hyper-ambitious salesperson approaches you, you either run to the nearest exit or detour to the next aisle. Love them or hate them, at the end of the day, they are necessary.

Our guest today, Ian Altman, will share with us how to be a nonstereotypical salesperson. Listen in as he teaches how to ask the right questions and how to position value versus price. For the business leaders and owners tuning in to our show, Ian will share the steps you can put in place to develop top-performing salespeople.

Ian started, sold, and grew his prior companies while taking their value from $0 to over $1B. He's the co-author of the bestseller, Same Side Selling, and hosts a podcast called Same Side Selling. His Same Side Selling methodology has helped Fortune 500 companies including Allstate Financial, Advisors Excel, Thermofisher, Sodexo, Johnson & Johnson, The Standard, Teradata, Bell Canada, and SAP, quickly double or triple their growth. Ian has written for Forbes and Inc. and is also a popular keynote speaker. He is consistently recognized as one of the world's top 30 Experts on Sales, and his Same Side Selling Academy is rated one of the top 5 Sales Development Programs globally.

Key takeaways:

  1. So the greatest number of top performers are not pushy salespeople. See, there are three personas in the world of sales, you have an order taker, you have a stereotypical salesperson, and you have a subject matter expert (3:22)
  2. The second thing that top performers need is a playbook for dealing with common objections. We call it our objection clinic. The idea of the objection clinic is what are the things that come up all the time that you just, you wing it each time, even though it comes up all the time. (8:30)
  3. How do we attract the right people? So for starters, you're going to recruit by saying things like, "Hey, are you working in a place right now where you feel underappreciated, you're being micromanaged, where you don't have autonomy, or don't have the right tools to achieve your full potential? Then we would love to talk to you about whether or not we might be a fit." (14:47)

You spent 20 or 30 years building your company then all of sudden, your phone rings and you've got an offer. Now you are wondering, what do I do?

In today’s episode, Jeff Getty defines transitions and transactions and how to decide what is best for your company's future. Listen in as he discusses how to complete either transitions or transactions and how to equip yourself to get the most out of it.

Jeff is a Merger and Acquisitions Attorney and is the Managing Director of Key's Family Wealth Consulting Team. He is a nationally recognized author and speaker with over 25 years of experience designing and implementing sophisticated, and innovative asset protection, tax reduction, and estate planning strategies. Jeff has more than $8 billion in transactional experience in private offerings of equity and debt, mergers and acquisitions, reorganizations, and spin-offs for closely-held and family-owned businesses.

Key takeaways

  1. Transitions to me, are generally talking about internal transfers. So it's either selling or gifting to children or transitioning management ownership and control to management or employee. Transactions are sales to third parties. (4:28)
  2. About 50% of most deals in the privately held space, begin with an unsolicited approach or unsolicited offer around a business. And if you're a successful business owner, you see this every day. (11:04)
  3. I would always tell someone unless they're sure they're ready to do something tomorrow, to go to work and do a particular strategy. You should look at your transition or transactional auctions over a series of time. (32:13)
  4. First and foremost, you should always know what your business is worth inside the marketplace. You never want to be caught flat-footed when someone comes across and lobs you the proverbial fat offer, a stupid offer, and you don't really know in context, is it really that good? (33:20)

Leaders have big jobs and impressive leaders demonstrate true courage. Based on her experience consulting with companies, coaching executives, and developing leaders at all levels, our guest, Amy Riley, has seen that successful leaders consistently demonstrate courage in four distinct ways.

In today's episode, Amy shares the ways leaders exhibit courage and lessons that can be gleaned from these examples. She also shares how, taking the courage to talk to employees about personal concerns, can positively impact employee performance in the workplace.

Amy Riley is an internationally renowned speaker and the international best-selling author of "The Courage of a Leader: How to Inspire, Engage and Get Extraordinary Results. " She has more than two decades of experience consulting with Fortune-50 companies including Cisco Systems, Deloitte, and Barclays. Amy has a Master of Science in Training and Development (MSTD), with an emphasis in Organization Development (OD), from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. She is a Certified Professional Behavioral Analyst (CPBA), a certified Tiara International LLC Coach, and certified in the Meyers-Briggs Type Instrument.

Key takeaways:

  1. Courage is not knowing all of the stuff that you could possibly know about the initiative or your goals or the results that you're going for. It can also involve that vulnerability to say I don't know all the answers here. (4:45)
  2. Leadership development, how we're doing and being and thinking as a leader, is a work in progress for all of us. (9:02)
  3. I am a believer in strengths-based leadership…Don't try to be who you are not instead, lean into your strengths. We're starting to learn that leaders look and feel and talk in different ways and effective leadership does have different kinds of faces and styles. (19:31)

Who hasn't dreamt of a workplace that has great teamwork? A place that has effortless communication, selfless collaboration, and a finished product that actually feels finished. If the result is so desirable, then why is it difficult to accomplish?

Getting a team to work together is more critical than ever; according to Salesforce, 86 percent of workers and executives find their workplace failures stem from a lack of collaboration and a huge part of collaborating is ensuring that everyone is on the same page.

Enter Brian Cain, Co-Founder of Work Excellence, a company that has developed a method that helps organizations see the most important issues in the workplace and make small changes that can result in massive gains in productivity, time, and cost savings. Brian is a proven change management leader that helps organizations achieve their goals and meet their expectations. His expertise is in strategic and operational planning, group facilitation, teaching and coaching teams, individuals, meeting management, and process optimization.

In today's episode, Brian gives us a glimpse of their Work Excellence® Method, a simple method that helps organizations improve by getting them on the same page and staying on that same page as well.

Key takeaways:

  1. We asked the question, where's the page? That's a simple question, right? And people really don't have a page; they just say we're not on the same page. We hear it more and more today, especially with diverse groups working in different parts. Some people are at home and some people are in the office. Maybe it's a hybrid where you're in and out and some people are away all the time. It makes it more difficult to get and stay on the same page (4:25)
  2. A lot of times people just need small changes, and they can't see those simple small changes that they need to make to get there. (7:20)
  3. You're 46% more likely to get your goal to reach your goal if you write it down…If you write down that goal, that future state of where you want to be, you believe that you can get there so you must take action (21:27)

As we come out of the pandemic things can be over overwhelming. You might be emotionally overloaded and are afraid to decide on what to do next.

Meet our guest, Brad Cousins who describes himself as someone "built for crisis". He is a specialist in transformational change with over 20 years of experience in private equity and distressed acquisitions. A turnaround global transformation executive, he has built his career on rapid, radical and change with breakthrough growth.

In today's episode, Brad teaches us how to build ourselves better for crisis and live at the intersection of strategy, people, change management, transportation, transformation, and the biggest part - managing ourselves and our emotions.

Key takeaways:

  1. We tend to approach this crisis, and they're triggering our emotions. We're not recognizing that our judgment and our decision-making are impacted by emotional overload. (2:56)
  2. So whatever crisis comes today is an opportunity and I think it's a really a mindset shift of looking at every crisis as an opportunity to do something different (4:26)
  3. Some people run to the car wreck outside, and some people shy away from it. Some people run to help, and some people get scared. And so part of it is recognizing yourself and your triggers. (5:23)

The future isn't planned. We can't create a vision of the future and then tell our employees to make it happen. If this is the case, how can we make the future we want to happen? As leaders, we need to adapt. We create visions, we create ideas, and we create plans. And then as we start walking down the road, we find out what's different from what we thought, and we modify.

In today's podcast, Peter Compo author of The Emergent Approach to Strategy, Adaptive design, and execution for change and innovation, shares how to be an adaptive leader by being adaptive to strategies. Peter is a corporate business veteran, scientist, and musician who spent twenty-five years at E. I. DuPont in diverse leadership positions, including director of corporate integrated business planning.

Key takeaways:

  1. Maybe there's a way to make it a win-win with somebody that you do something to. But unless there's some pain, I don't think it's a real strategy. (8:15)
  2. Often, the driving force for making the change was the manufacturing group. The business leadership's strategy consisted very much of lists of things to do, initiatives, and so forth. It didn't give the manufacturing group the direction they needed …They didn't know what products to cancel, they didn't know what products not to expedite anymore. (9:49)
  3. How does creativity occur? Free thinking is in there, yeah, maybe. But it's not the essence of it. It's some kind of discipline, but it's a deep discipline…they had a strategy. (12:19)

So, you are selling your property and your real estate agent says, "This is worth $500 grand". Then an offer comes in for $600K. Is there something wrong with your realtor?

Welcome to the seller's market where the demand is high and the supply is low so buyers must compete with each other to score a property.

In today's episode, Harjeet Rathour shares what buyers can do to put themselves in a better position to purchase a house. Harjeet is a Realtor®, Team leader for Team Jeet at eXp Realty. Her philosophy "Value, Vision and Victory" is the core of her business and personal life.

Key takeaways:

  1. People are moving more out towards the suburbs where there is space. So because the inventory is low, it (prices) did go up. And even with the interest rates going up recently, that (demand) didn't stop either. (1:48)
  2. Always get an inspection done on a property. Another thing is (to) have your finances together. (9:04)
  3. As soon as something comes on the market, it's off in a week. Another thing I would suggest is preparation. If you have everything in order, you see the house that you want, you (can) put in the offer and start your negotiation within a day or two. (Otherwise) that house is going to somebody else. (14:34)

You have just finished writing your book, and you see yourself as the next JK Rowling. Then you realize, what should I do next? Tune in to today's podcast as our next guest, John David Mann, shares with us how to weave compelling prose and make a living from it.

John has co-authored more than 30 books including four New York Times bestsellers and five national bestsellers. His books have been published in 38 languages and have sold more than 3 million copies. His writing has won multiple awards, including the Living Now Book Awards Evergreen Medal for its "contributions to positive global change." COLD FEAR is the sequel to last year's STEEL FEAR, which was named "one of the best novels of 2021" by Publishers Weekly and has been nominated for a Barry Award.

Key takeaways:

  1. To describe a scene..I build it in my head, like building a stage set…I look at pictures of it, I go read about it, I go do research. (4:03)

  2. The number one strategy for creating a readership for your book is developing that core of devoted readers, it could be 50 people, it could be 100, whatever, how it doesn't matter how small it is. (21:06)

  3. Before you finish your book, you got to make sure that your concept is golden and is going to ring like a bell that can be heard for 10 miles around. (23:48)

  4. When you first put stuff on paper, don't worry about whether it's any good or not because it won't be I promise you, it won't be that great… That's okay. As long as you're true to yourself, true to your idea true to your intention… you come back to it and take your ideas, the raw ore, and start to refine it into Polish steel (34:41)

Whether we like it or not, or whether we believe it or not, we live in a superficial world and in today's episode, Holly Katz shares with us why fashion matters and why it should be important to you. For Holly, fashion can change your life. With fashion, you can increase your self-confidence and actually make your image work for you.

Holly is the host of the Fashion Crimes Podcast where she spills the tea on industry secrets, calls out fashion criminals and interviews top influencers and guests that shape the fashion world today. She helps transforms lives through individual personal styling and has been described as "life-changing". Her company, Holly Katz Styling, boasts an impressive client list including celebrities, television networks, ad agencies, photographers, and magazines.

Key takeaways:

  1. Fashion is not you're bad, you're ugly, you're pretty, you're rich, you're poor, you're skinny, you're fat. It has nothing to do with that. It's the same thing (as) you're telling people how to help their career. (8:19)
  2. All of these people that are shopping for price, I will tell you, right now, I will have it on my gravestone you are doing yourself a disservice by doing that. You think you're getting a good deal, you think you're getting something on sale, you think you'll find somewhere to wear it, you're not. (15:53)
  3. if you think that style and fashion don't apply to you or you're not good enough or you don't have enough money, or you're just not you're telling yourself an incorrect truth. It can apply to you, it will apply to you and it will change your life for the better (28:49)

What do you get from touring with Guns and Roses and Air Supply? A lot of outside the box marketing! Listen in as our guest, Craig Duswalt, shares with us how to deliver our message, whatever the message may be, like a rockstar.

Craig's background includes touring with Guns N' Roses, as Axl Rose's Personal Assistant, and Air Supply, as the band's Personal Assistant. After doing this, he became a Creative Director for a Los Angeles-based ad agency before starting his own called Green Room Design & Advertising, which was named the 2002 Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year.

Craig Duswalt is also a Keynote Speaker, Author, Podcaster, and creator of the brands' RockStar Marketing and Rock Your Life. Craig has written ten books and is a #1 Amazon Best-Selling Author.

Key takeaways:

  1. You have to look the part. I have a rockstar jacket that I wear on stage that just ties in with my image… If I have a thing called Rockstar Marketing Bootcamp or Rock Your Life or Deliver Your Message Like A Rockstar, there's got to be some sort of rockstar theme going. Otherwise, there's a disconnect, that's delivering your message, how you appear in public, how you appear on stage (14:48)
  2. If you're doing any presentation at all, if you list like 15 things on a PowerPoint slide, no one's listening to you. They're reading all the 15 things. I always have one thought per slide. Yep, just one, and then they look at that, and then they focus on the thing (15:57)
  3. A rockstar is a busy business; in any industry, you're an expert. You're known as the expert in that industry. It is all about confidence. (19:30)

Craig is adding 100 "RockStars" in the book, showing off their Brand, their Message, and how they Deliver their Message and still has 76 slots left. To get a chance to be featured in his book visit https://rockyourlife.kartra.com/page/deliverbook.

Nobody wants to work with Horrible Bosses and we don't want to be one either. Listen as our guest today, Marcel Daane shares with us the five energies of Horrible Bosses so we know how NOT to become one.

Marcel Daane is an accredited Professional Certified Coach with the International Coaching Federation. He is the recipient of the 2012 Global HR Excellence Award in Leadership, the 2016 Global Coaching Leadership Award, and voted 2020 Executive Coach of the Year in Singapore. He has written two books, "Headstrong Performance," and "Five Energies of Horrible Bosses and How Not To Become One."

Since 2010, Marcel has been partnering with organizations, teams, and individuals in Asia and North America providing leadership assessments, feedback, and coaching to align the leadership skills of senior managers and behaviors of teams with the organization's brand promise and culture.

Key Takeaways:

  1. I've always found that there was a missing element in how we connect with other human beings, and how we can work together in teams. And a large part of that is how we connect with energy. (2:40)
  2. So as human beings we're conduits of energy. We actually project different types of energy throughout our day, we do this all the time. For example, when I'm in a really good mood, or I'm at a party, and I want to dance, my energy is different from when I'm in the board meeting (12:41)
  3. For any single boss, if they're not aware of the energy that they're in, they might be utilizing the wrong wrong type of energy, which coins them as a horrible boss at that moment. (15:41)

Listen in as Brian unveils the six things to focus on if you want to grow a successful business. At the end of the episode, Brian will share the link to get the checklist for these six things.

Brian Lofrumento is an entrepreneur, podcaster, and author whose businesses have reached over 3.5 million people. Having started his first business at the age of 19, Brian now hosts one of the top business and marketing podcasts in the world, with listeners in over 150 countries, and is the CEO of the Launch Coalition, the community where entrepreneurs go to grow together. Brian has worked with over 5,000 entrepreneurs of all levels to help them rapidly grow to 6- and 7-figures.

Key Takeaways:

  1. It's easy for us to poke fun at these two examples of selling Tumbleweed or selling the pet rock. But the reality is, it's not just the products that made those businesses a success. And I think that's one of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to entrepreneurship (7;13)
  2. Everyone has a million-dollar idea and then nothing comes of it. So that's why for me at the base of the pyramid is us the entrepreneur, if you do not act like an entrepreneur, think like an entrepreneur. If you're not productive, like an entrepreneur, if you don't have the belief of an entrepreneur, doesn't matter how good your product is, you're never going to succeed (9:11)
  3. The thing about entrepreneurship is that you have to continue powering through these obstacles without seeing results. (9:59)

Esther Deutsch is a Social Worker and Ops Manager for RCS Professional Services, a company providing professional IT Support for businesses in and around New York, NY, and Atlanta, GA since 1999. She is very passionate about leadership development, education, and problem-solving through innovation. She loves to network and build thriving communities by leading with heart, sparking creativity, and empowering individual team members to unite and take responsibility for collectively spreading an organization's mission and core purpose.

In today's episode, Esther and Doug discuss cybersecurity and what small companies can do to protect themselves. She also shares her advocacy of increasing the number of social workers in the tech space and women in tech and cybersecurity

Key Takeaways:

  1. A lot of small businesses think that they need to put a lot of money in, or do too much over their head where it may not even be worth it for them financially, when the reality is actually not that true, there's a lot of little things you can do. Some of them don't even cost money. It's just about training and awareness.

  2. A lot of businesses that were previously in offices are no longer in offices and not planning to ever go back, us being one of them. That's created a lot of opportunities from the cybersecurity standpoint and not necessarily in our favor. (2:55)

  3. To actually bridge the gap, I think the first step is getting more women to study these fields. I could tell you that there's not an equal number of men and women studying the field. (15:25)

The finest couple of the year, John David Mann and Ana Gabriel Mann share their precious time with Doug to talk about their newest book, The Go-Giver Marriage: A Little Story About the Five Secrets to Lasting Love. This long-awaited sequel shows readers how to unlock a deeply satisfying, abundant relationship based on simple, everyday acts of generosity.

In this episode, John and Ana share the five secrets to lasting love and explain how each of these is rooted in our needs as a child and still need now. These five secrets are easy to understand and implement and work no matter what phase of the marriage you are in.

Key Takeaways:

  1. People want to think a marriage can be 5050. But a 5050 marriage is really a recipe for failure. There's just so much research and evidence that says that people who are giving and constantly giving live longer. Their heart is healthier, they sleep better, they have generally better health. So why wouldn't you want to give to the very person that you're marrying? (4:23)
  2. You don't have to do the work as a couple. One wants to work actively to improve the marriage to change lives, and the other one is not so sure. With our work with the five secrets, one person can start putting these secrets in your practice. And it can shift the dynamic in such a way that the whole family comes along. (9:35)
  3. My favorite secret is the very first secret. And it's a secret that's really easy to put into place, it's the secret to appreciate. And when we talk about appreciate, it isn't a passing compliment. A moment of appreciation is taking the time to stop them in their tracks and actually speak authentically to what it is that you love about them. (10:48)

John David Mann is co-author of more than thirty books, including four New York Times bestsellers and five national bestsellers; his classic 2008 parable The Go-Giver (coauthored with Bob Burg) earned the 2017 Living Now Book Award's "Evergreen Medal" given for its "contribution to positive global change."

Ana Gabriel Mann, MA, earned her degree in clinical psychology before going on to serve as a celebrated educator, therapist, corporate trainer, speaker, and coach. She currently coaches Go-Giver Marriage clients and leads the Go-Giver Marriage Coaches Training Program, training coaches from around the globe.

In today's episode our guest, Dr. Shameen Prashantham, will talk about large corporates and startups, their differences, and also what makes it difficult for them to work together. We will also talk about the history lessons learned through Microsoft's BizSpark.

Dr. Prashantham is a Professor of International Business & Strategy, and Associate Dean (MBA), at China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai, China. In his new business book, Gorillas Can Dance explains one very successful strategy that has worked for leading corporations such as Microsoft and Unilever: partnering with start-ups. His book addresses the key issues facing corporations wishing to develop this initiative based on years of research and interviews with leading practitioners in this field.

Key Takeaways:

  1. There will be still big companies that are very defensive and very difficult to penetrate. But in my research, I found a number of companies that have over time, developed more humility than they had in the past. And I think these are the ones to perhaps be talking to first. There's a potential Win-win in the sense that they have the scale and the startups have the agility. (8:25)
  2. I think the reason why big companies have been talking to startups is the recognition that they need to up their game in terms of digitalization. The startups have something to offer going forward. And another driver I'm seeing now is sustainability. (20:25)
  3. It is conceivable that a startup that's worked with a partner program could get on the radar of the big company and be a candidate for investment. (25:03)

Our guest today, George Jones, is on a mission to help young men become better fathers. Based on his belief that The best present you give your children is to be present, George has created a full curriculum of digital and experiential courses to make a dent in the Universe. He is also writing a book on fatherhood titled, "The Present Dad".

George Jones is a retired NFL Player and Devoted Husband and Father. Jones had a stellar college career at San Diego State, where he broke many of Marshall Faulk's rushing records. George made his NFL debut during the 1997 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, serving as a halfback for most of the season. The following season, he was released by the Steelers and moved on to the Jacksonville Jaguars before finishing his career with the expansion Cleveland Browns in 1999.

Key takeaways:

  1. GJ was born on January 23, 2007. I can remember him grabbing my finger and I whispered in his ear, "I will always be here for you, GJ. No matter what it takes, through good and bad, I will always be here for you." That day, when my oldest son who bears my name was born, that's the day I became a man. (13:12)
  2. Scoring a touchdown in the NFL, rushing 400 yards, and being drafted, knowing a bunch of famous people, that's cool. That is all fine and good. But the greatest gift that the good Lord has ever given me is to be a father. The talent to play football is secondary to this. So for me, I love football, and I enjoyed it, but it can never match being a father. (16:15)
  3. I can remember it like it was yesterday. The two nurses were whispering under their breath about Max. So I asked the nurse, and they said, "We don't want to alarm you but we think your son has Down syndrome". So I googled Down Syndrome and I almost passed out. I knew right then and there, my life as a father has changed forever. (19:07)
  4. The first three years of Max's life, I probably cried 10 times a day. I had to pick myself up and say, "You know what, George, you got to stop feeling bad for yourself. You are his father, you got to do right by him". From that point on, I had to do right by him, and I had to fight for him. Now, 13 years later, I couldn't imagine life without Max, because Max has given me something that I don't think I would have had he not been born, which is empathy. They always say the good Lord doesn't give you anything you can't handle. So me being a former professional football player, I wasn't going to quit. I was going to stand up and fight and do right by Max. (21:48)

Randy Peyser edits and ghostwrites books and gets authors' book deals with New York literary agents and publishers. Her clients have been featured on Hallmark TV and Daily Mail TV, in Oprah Magazine and Time Magazine, on the Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestseller Lists, in airport bookstores and FedEx/Office and Office Max stores, and more. She is the author of Crappy to Happy as featured in the movie, "Eat Pray Love"; The Power of Miracle Thinking; and The Write-a-Book Program.

Key takeaways:

  1. There are two parts to getting a book deal. One part is about your content, your differentiation, the writing itself - what are you bringing, that's new to the conversation. The other part has to do with your numbers. And this is the business side of publishing. (2:03)
  2. Publishers are looking for outcome-driven titles and outcome-driven content. Books that'll take the reader from point A to point B, with all the steps in between. So by the time the reader finishes reading the book, they can actually apply something to do something differently. (14:28)
  3. Publishers do not care about an author's brand at all, it does not matter to them. We love our brands, we're attached to our identity and our brands, publishers don't care about that. The only thing they care about is selling books. (17:28)

Dr Gordon Jones, Co-founder and CEO of Validide and Author of International Best Seller "How to Createyourself" graces our show again today to talk about his book and what inspired him to write it.

Dr. Jones is a man of many hats. He is a healthcare executive, business developer, investor, mentor, author, coach, curator, educator, son, hugger, father, brother, athlete, coach - he's done everything very much like Michelangelo. A graduate of the Citadel, he did two tours with the second airborne. He's got his master's and doctorate to health administration from the Medical University of South Carolina and has spent 30 years in digital health, innovation, entrepreneurship, business development.

Key Takeaways:

  1. If we don't know why we're here, then we can't create a purpose, we can't define what our purpose is. And then we can't define our journey to create yourself because we don't know where it is we want to go. (6: 23)
  2. So one of the big things that we do as we're developing ourselves, is, we don't know what it is we're doing, but we verbalize that with our friends. Or we might do an activity and we're subconsciously looking at how our friends respond to that. And all of this starts to help develop who we are and what our identity is. So if we take that just whole idea of how we learn and develop our identity as a kid, and adulthood, we understand the mental behaviors that we regenerate off of different cues that we get from our environment. One of the things that we have to do is make sure that we have an environment that has been conducive to pursuing that of which we want to create. (8:20)
  3. So I've let my mind generate the idea of a goal. And when you're doing that, you just have to make sure you do it well enough that it makes you proud. And that becomes a part of your creative self journey. (10:00)

Since his humble beginnings on the outskirts of Milan, Marco Dondi has established his career and expertise as a strategy consultant with over a decade of experience in advising CEOs and government officials on economics, economic development, banking, education, adult training, and people development.

In his book, Outgrowing Capitalism, Marco Dondi sheds light on the fact that most people do not have the economic security to focus on purpose and life fulfillment. Instead of generating value and increasing well-being in society, free-market money creation through private banks has led to the inflation of house prices, financial crises, increasing inequality, and mountains of private debt.

Dondi believes that the assumptions and circumstances that made capitalism a success are no longer true today. In Outgrowing Capitalism, he provides a pragmatic roadmap to institutionalize monetarism and solve societal issues that only seem as permanent as time.

Key takeaways:

  1. I think capitalism was born in a place where it was an agrarian society where every bit of capital increased productivity and gave the ability to not be subjected to the rains and the gods sending the rains, but to the ability to reliably get food. I think today, we are way, way beyond that point. And so that's the point of our growing right, I think we have outgrown the world in which we lived when capitalism was the best alternative and the best option. (2:43)
  2. So I will say that's the starting point for me is like, you create an infrastructure where every citizen has a bank account at the Central Bank, just for emergency. (12:30)
  3. Whatever the price, look, it's basic, I need to get it like it's so I think you need to add a bit more thinking and structuring and setting the guardrails. Otherwise, the markets and the private sector will just take advantage. (28:34)

Marco holds an MBA (INSEAD, 2012) and a Master's in management, economics, and industrial engineering (Politecnico di Milano, 2009). His book, Outgrowing Capitalism, is available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Marco-Dondi/e/B09GL23M21

He is a former college athlete forced into retirement from a major injury. With school not being his strength, he utilized the skills he learned as an athlete to build one of the fastest-growing independent financial planning firms in the southeast.

When Covid shut the world down he saw an opportunity and seized it, authoring a financial literacy and platform maximization book for college athletes which led to him starting another business partnering with athletic departments, conferences, and governing athletic bodies to eradicate financial illiteracy.

Takeaways:

  1. I think the biggest takeaway is life always deals us obstacles, right?.. When COVID came, everything looked bleak in my financial planning business. I had to look at the rough times and analyze them to see opportunity, then take action and make things happen when the world looked like it was gonna halt forever. (01:47)
  2. There are around 550,000 student-athletes, across all sports, including Olympians. Out of that population, you're maybe going to get 12,000 that gets to go and play professional sports and make money for playing sports at a pro-level. So it's very, very few. (08:55)
  3. As an athlete, you're trained that you're not gonna win every bat. You failed seven out of 10 times. And so you just naturally know how to bounce back from having losses. (13:37)

In his first and only varsity game, J-Mac was the highest scorer. CBS, ESPN, CNN, and major news outlets around the world picked up the story, the YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-nMab6XDNI) got millions of hits, and the world was fascinated with everything to do with Jason McElwain (J-Mac). But the story began long before he took the court that night at Greece Athena High School in Rochester, New York.

Jim Johnson started his career slowly by being fired in my first varsity position. He rebounded and finished with over 400 wins and many championships. He was named Coach of the Year in 2006 by several Rochester-area organizations and was also presented with a National Sportsmanship Award. In 2016 Coach Johnson was named Monroe County Coach of the Year as well as receiving the Class A Section V Coach of the Year honors.

Of his 428 career victories, one, in particular, will surely never be duplicated.

On Feb. 15, 2006, Coach Johnson made the kindhearted gesture of inserting his autistic team manager, Jason McElwain, into Greece Athena High School’s final home game. Jason scored 20 points in just over four minutes, including six three-point baskets, to become an instant national celebrity.

Takeways:

  1. I did not set the world on fire when I started my career. But the neat thing is, I guess what I'm most proud of is that I kept growing and getting better. (2:00)

  2. I’ve studied a lot about success with people because I wanted to be successful in myself and be a great leader, I really believe that resilience is something that you have to develop. we all had our challenges, but you know what, it's hard to find anybody that's had great success that didn't have that characteristic. (16:07)

  3. It was one of my proudest moments to see how far kids are willing to sacrifice, to help a teammate out. And that's what the essence of teamwork is all about. (18:12)

  4. So in the business world, you know, I do presentations, and I talk about seven keys to being an effective leader. The first thing is for me is to clarify your vision. The second thing that I talk about is the ability to build trust. (18:36)

Johnson is now an authority on the subject of realizing your dreams. A full-time author and ghostwriter, Southern California native Mark Anthony Tierno has written over 30 Science Fiction and Fantasy novels. He holds a Master’s Degree in Physics, which often plays well in his creation of other worlds. Amongst his works is a triskadekology (series of 13 books) combining fantasy and science fiction into an epic known as "Maldene". He also wrote Inspector Flaatphut, a 6 part book series with 2 books already published.

Mark has this one problem with writing, though: he can't stop! When he's not working on his own projects he's working on someone else's, and currently has ideas for a LOT more... if he can just find the time away from the rest

Takeaways:

  1. On ghostwriting non-fiction books: I need specifics here, and sometimes it's like pulling teeth to get out the specifics and just make like a bullet point list of what you want to say. Once you have the bullet points, then that evolves into an outline, and you have your point by point. (19:07)

  2. In the fiction book, for me, plot is king. Whatever it is, you can have your social message or whatever else, but if you don't have the plot first, no one is going to read the thing….And before I even start on any book fiction or nonfiction, I'll make sure I have that plot outline down. I want to know what the end of the book is going to be before I started. (21:03)

  3. If you're gonna make something on a movie or a comic or whatever, you know, pay attention to the source of material, they have reasons for doing what they're doing there. (23:18)

  4. On advising somebody who's thinking about writing their own book: First have a day job, second prepare to suffer because it isn't going to be, you could write the best possible book and unless you have contacts and in the marketing and publishing field, that's things probably going to sit in your closet for a few years before you find some way to connect it to someone. Summary:

Marcia Weider, CEO, and Founder of Dream University spent years launching a worldwide dream movement. She designed and launched the DreamSteps Methodology that helped people all over the world to identify and realize their dreams. In this interview, she shares that before you can achieve your dream you have to identify what you love and what you want. It's a combination of being a dreamer and realistic at the same time.

Visit https://marciawieder.com to know more about Marcia Weider.

Key Takeaways/Main Points:

In this episode we discussed….

  1. “Dream is a verb. You have to act, otherwise, it's a fantasy.”

  2. “The distinction for me between a dream and a fantasy is that in a dream you can design a strategy for getting there, but there's a paradox because if you go too quickly to strategy, you'll often compromise the dream down to what you realistically think is possible”

  3. “Getting clarity about who you are and what you do and don't want, your ability to say no more, No thank you, and to be discerning, can really free up a lot of headspace.”

  4. “Choose to believe in your dream and demonstrate that you're more committed to your dream than to any doubt, fear or reality by taking action.”

  5. “Big dreams and long-term dreams need short-term projects. A project that I think you can accomplish easily in one month or less because a month is a short enough period to produce a real result.”

  6. “It's a really cool thing when you learn how to fail without identifying yourself as a failure.”

  7. “It was one of these thoughts that just because I was good at something didn't mean it was the thing I was supposed to do forever.”

  8. “I consider myself a philanthropist, not just giving money, but giving time, energy, and my love to things that I care about.”

In this episode of The Author Your Brand Show, Karen Bartuch shares her professional views on the George Floyd and how it can be prevented. For Bartuch, using psychology and communication can help handle stressful situations, especially with the cops.

Bartuch, a former Chicago cop, reiterates the importance of training among law enforcers so they can do their job humanely and win the people, even those she calls "don't want to go into cuffs, but need to be in cuffs".

She also highlights the discrimination of women in the workplace which motivated her to start a movement on women empowerment. She believes that, though it's not necessary to pick women over men all the time, society must become impartial towards women and not treat them as less important.

Karen gives a peak on her podcast, called "Victorization", where she talks about how people can physically and mentally prepare for what may happen to them and be victorious even under tragic conditions.

Key Takeaways/Main Points:

In this episode we discussed….

  1. "It is important to treat people, even those who are with restraining orders, with integrity, dignity, and respect. If not, they will come after you and make some complaints." (09:31)

  2. "Without proper training on the law and its nuances, officers tend to go from zero to escalation because they think it's going to end the situation." (10:14)

  3. "Bartuch shares the stress inoculation training she designed for police officers. During the training, officers are placed under stressful situations that test their ability to think and make the right decision, such as when to shoot or not to shoot. The purpose of the training is to prepare the cops physically and mentally and help them make the right call." (17:51)

  4. According to Karen's research, women don't often see themselves as leaders or feel like they're heard as leaders. (33:37)

Listen to Victorization, Bartuch's podcast, to hear a spirited and often humorous approach to shifting the narrative from "victim" to "victor" that will awaken your warrior spirit.

  2. Don’t be fooled by the race of the corner office. It comes with a lot of compromise and make sure that you want it before you sacrifice your whole life for it, make sure that that's really what you want (3:31)

Key Takeaways:

  1. You need to have sufficient capital, eventually, the revenue should be more than all these expenses, then you are in in a good shape. (7:58)

  2. One thing I which I still regret, we started growing quite rapidly. We had close to 800 employees. I think that's a mistake because you should grow in conjunction with the revenue growth. You need to have a minimum number of employees for sure. But any kind of growth has to be in proportion to the growth in business activities.(13:30)

  1. Ambition has always been this incredible strong drive. And there's been a dark side in the early, early twenties. For example, I did experience a form of burnout. I did, essentially just take on too many things. (2:59)
  2. Instead of you managing your ambition, your ambition is managing you….We looked at the types of situations where these occur and, and we found that there was something we called frenemies in the book. Uh, there are friends of ambition, but they're also, um, potential enemies. Uh, ambition has a dark side, if you will. And it's important that there is a balance because it's not that you want to get rid of them. (11:31)
  3. The big question is setting a philosophy of ambition. I mean, really thinking through what is your ambition and, and more important than the destination is actually the direction because so many things will change in your life.… along those three dimensions of achievement, growth and wellbeing, what are the principles you want to live by you? You need to have a minimum number of employees for sure. But any kind of growth has to be in proportion to the growth in business activities.(13:30)
  3. We should learn to have people who are experts, part of your team that you have to bring. Like technology, legal, and marketing you need to hire experts. (21:35)

In this episode, Michael Klein talks about the principles and keys to investing in the present economic state. Some of the key points mentioned were how smart and talented people overpowered real estate experts in terms of unique and successful investments. Key Takeaways/Main Points:

In this episode we discuss….

  7. “That has nothing to do with the real estate. That had everything to do with the people, the real estate was just sitting there” (33:56)

  8. “Deals are not found. They're created” (34:03)

  9. “The United States at the end of World War II had debt levels that were similar to where we are now. And we worked our way.” (36:55)

Jeff West, an influencer and coach in sales management, converses about how salespeople or business aspirants can effectively and sustainably hit the target.

He emphasizes the urgency of establishing chemistry that brings people in and makes them want to stay.

According to West in business, you have to create a need and convince your clients that whatever you're selling is something they will be better off having.

Key Takeaways/Main Points:

In this episode we discussed….

  1. “The story, of course, revolves around a young salesman and a homeless man that kind of changes his total perspective.” (6:14)

  4. "Whatever you're selling, find something that you truly in your heart believe that your customer is better off by having that product or service on a day-to-day basis.” (16:58)

  5. “You need to ask the right questions. You'll know your market and you'll know what's going on, but you need to ask the right questions and find out what those needs are and be genuinely focused on helping that person solve that issue with that company that you can put them with.” (17:35)

  6. “You've got to learn how to build a chemistry that brings people in and then makes them want to stay.” (22:51)

  8. “Never underestimate the value of following up and building that relationship.” (32:09)

  9. “Good lead for me is going to be any company that has a sales team that needs sales and sales leadership training, or any small employer that is competing with the giants in their industry. Those are good leads for me.” (33:42)

Key Takeaways/Main Points:

In this episode we discussed…. 1. “if a Kalamazoo community college can switch to a four-day week and experiment and just say like, does this work for us? I think it's important for businesses to just question, why have we done it this way?” (01:08)

  1. “So most people, you know, they hear things like sprint or batch where you're going to do all this work….. (09:12) And so in the book, I talked about discovering your sprint type, uh, because someone may try the typical batching sprint. And they're like, that doesn't work for me, I guess I'm not a sprinter. But then the reality is, you just don't know your sprint type.” (08:54)

  2. “The way it works is if you get a meeting with a Harper Collins it's as much me making sure they're a fit as them making sure I'm a fit. It's not an interview to try to get me to just join it's us seeing if there's a good relationship there and the amount of kind of business books that they are putting out for me felt like a very solid fit.” (18:16)

Kim Thompson Pinder shares how she became the CEO of a successful publishing company and a book writer.

Kim did not write for 30 years after a teacher told her at seven years old, "She was no good at writing and should stop." She came to a crossroads and chose to let those painful words go. Since she set her words free,

she has gone on to author five books, with two more on the way.

Currently, she is helping fellow writers to be successful in the publishing industry by “capturing their voice and writing it in a way that captivates their [target] audience”. She emphasizes the importance of three things when publishing a book: 1) Consider who you are writing the book to; 2) the message you want to send them; 3) What stories from your life can you tell, that's going to help the person relate and then take that to the next level.

Key Takeaways/Main Points:

In this episode we discuss….

  1. “I forgave my teacher and I decided it was time for me to let my words go.” (04:26)

  2. “And finally I had this blog post. I put it up on the website and I had just enough courage to ask a few people to read it.” (06:26)

  3. "And then, you know, I knew it was time to start writing a book" (06:45)

  4. “the first one I wrote was network marketing, recruiting, 50 free or low-cost ways to find…recruits and customers.” (07:51)

  5. “What was the transition from pseudo-code MLM to that of (helping other entrepreneurs create their books)?" (09:12)

  6. “I just started taking on writing jobs because I needed extra money. And because I was already an established author, my books had good reviews.” (10:40)

  7. “how ghostwriters, I'm guessing your people as well, have to help mirror that person's voice” (13:05)

  8. “we just really focus on capturing our client's voice and more importantly, the heart of their message because every client that I've worked with, and I'm pretty sure Doug has as well, has a strong message that they want to share a strong message or strong story. And so, it's capturing that voice and writing it in a way that captivates the audience” (14:20)

  9. “Business went up 300% last year because I stopped talking to egocentric people and started focusing on people with a story that matters.” (16:05)

  10. “the craziest book would be Shari Lueck, My Skeletons Have Names and she tells her incredible story of growing up in an abusive home.” (21:45)

  11. “first of all is, you want to know who you're writing the book to. It needs to be targeted. If you want your book to be effective, it has to be targeted.” (26:40)

  12. “What I would suggest is just really get a good grip on who you want to write to and the messages that you want and the stories of yourself that you want to share.” (27:28)

  13. “Sometimes we get so emotionally attached to what we write but find that editor, that's not only going to do your grammar, but it's also going to help you develop the book.” (28:13)

  14. “Don't stay emotionally attached to that book because it's more about making sure that the reader's going to benefit from the book, than making sure that you write all the things that you want” (28:44)

  15. “My book, Author to Authority, keeping with the brand right, is coming out in October.” (29:27)

“Afformations" is what Noah St. John wants his clients to ingrain in their lives. This is different from the positive affirmations many psychologists would encourage people to do. The importance of asking oneself the "why questions" will lead to the connection of his/her inner and outer game. Our inner game is how well we communicate with ourself and the outer game is how well we communicate with the outside world. In this episode, John emphasizes the importance of both factors in being successful and truly happy.

In this episode we discuss....

  1. “When you say this positive statement,75% of people actually don't believe it. And the only people who believe it are the ones who are already there” (5:00)

  2. “Millions and millions of people are unconsciously holding themselves back from the very thing that they want.” (12:29)

  3. “the why is more powerful than the how.” (14:26)

  4. “your entire life is only determined by two things. Number one is the quality of your communication with the world inside of you and the second thing is the quality of your communication with the world outside of you.” (22:26)

Leaders have a rippling effect in the organization, says Mary Malek in her interview with Doug Crowe. She talks about the vital role of leaders in the corporate world and how crucial it is for them to be accountable to their people. 8. “How do you measure the currency of innovation?” (9:25)

  9. “You've got to know what's going on in the front line. You got to know what's going on at the middle management and then really see where the gaps are.” (12:35)
