This fourth episode, is the first in a Black Love x BHM mini-series, in celebration of Black History Month, here in the U.K. Through this series I’ll explore stories of Black love in historical fiction, spanning a whole host of different geographies, time periods, characters and types of love. The mini-series kicks off with a review of His Treasure by Kiru Taye. This is a historical romance set in South Eastern Nigeria, pre-colonisation. It is the first book in the three part Men of Valour series. I discuss why I might start giving historical fiction a closer look, friendship as a foundation of marriage, and the types of themes that can completely ruin a book for me. This episode has a trigger/ content warning as I make reference to sexual assault.
In this third episode of Love Between the Lines, I review Can You Keep A Secret? by Sophie Kinsella. This book was recently made into a movie adaptation on Netflix, so I talk about why I don’t think the movie does the book justice, I question if honesty really is the best policy in relationships, and explain why Mr Perfect might not be Mr Perfect...for you!
In this second episode of Love Between the Lines, I review From Enemy’s Daughter to Expectant Bride by Olivia Gates. This is a Mills and Boon novel released in 2014 and the first book in the Billionaires of Black Castle series. I talk about my decades long obsession with Mills and Boon, the importance of agency in healthy relationships and why I might start believing in love at first sight.
In this first episode of Love Between the Lines, I review Take A Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert. Or, as I like to call it, the book that made me believe in love again. I discuss why this is the perfect book for me to launch this podcast with, what Dani and Zaf's relationship can teach us about the importance of friendship in love, and why the key to a healthy relationship is finding a balance between compromise and staying true to yourself!
