Steve Watson has been the senior pastor of Reservoir Church since July, 2013. Prior to that, he served as the principal of Watertown High School and as a middle- and high-school English teacher in the Boston Public Schools. Steve is also active as a leader in interfaith community organizing for public justice and on the integration of healthy faith and mental health. He serves on the Board of the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization, is a regional area developer with the Post-Evangelical Collective, and is a past board member of Samaritans. Steve has a B.A. in music from Brandeis University, a Masters in Education from UMASS-Boston, and a Doctorate in Theology and Ministry, through the Center for Open and Relational Theology at Northwind Seminary.
Born and raised in eastern Massachusetts, Steve has traveled extensively but has never left behind his great affection for the Charles River, the Red Sox, and (almost) all things New England. Steve and his wife Grace, a government policy analyst, became members of Reservoir Church in 2006. They love this community’s accessibility, authenticity, and vibrant connection with a living God. Aspirations of success, visions of significance and dreams of grandeur all died a long time ago and I have absolutely no interest in resurrecting them. I have finally figured out that I have nothing to lose by living a life of faith and trust. Meet Jennifer Hall: Hi! My name is Jennifer. I have been an elementary music teacher in the Kansas City, Kansas Public School District for 24 years.
I was honored in 2019 by my school district to be chosen as the elementary teacher of the year. I have dedicated my entire career to bringing the joy of music to inner-city children and found a lot of fulfillment and life-purpose through the blessings of that job.
In 2017, I was attuned to Reiki by my sister, Mary Bolan, who is a Disciples of Christ Christian Church Minister and a Reiki Master. During my Level II attunement, I had the most spiritual experience of my life during which I knew that offering Reiki Healing to others is my true calling. I made it my goal to perform 100 free reiki healing sessions so that I could truly hone my skills as I learned. I asked my “guinea pigs” to give me feedback as I developed my own style. After I felt confident in my abilities, friends and family started sending me referrals and I continued to offer healing through word-of-mouth (no website, business name etc.) only.
In the fall of 2020, I started hearing the Holy Spirit speak to me that it was time to devote more time to my healing business so I quit teaching full-time and now teach Elementary Strings (violins, violas and cellos) 3 days a week and see clients two days a week plus occasional evenings and weekends.
In 2014, I had treatment for Ovarian Cancer and used Integrative as well as Traditional Medicine to help me fully heal from that often-deadly cancer. At the time, I didn’t know about Reiki but I received massage, acupuncture, BodyTalk, chiropractic adjustments and worked with an Integrative Medicine M.D. who gave me Vitamin C infusions as well as nutritional and energetic supports. Many, many people prayed for me and supported me through that season. I learned a lot about worthiness, intentions, affirmations and faith. I am grateful that we have many healing modalities available to us today. This is a unique time in history to benefit from Eastern and Western medical and spiritual healing traditions.

In this podcast episode, I interview Brian Sumner, a pastor/evangelist from Liverpool, England who moved to America when he was age 15 to pursue a career as a professional skateboarder. Brian turned professional at the age of 19 and skateboarded for some of the biggest companies like Birdhouse, Airwalk, Adio, Fender Guitars, Truth Soul Armor, and Reliance Skateboards. He spent many summers traveling the US with Tony Hawk’s Gigantic skate park tour. In this episode, I interview three of the five Thompson siblings—Jordan Taylor Thompson, Jake Wells Thompson, and Brooke Cherith Thompson. In this podcast episode, I interview US Air Force fighter pilot, Lt. Col. Barry B. Bridger. At the age of twenty-seven, Barry was shot down over Hanoi, North Vietnam, right into the arms of American enemies. As a prisoner of war in the “Hanoi Hilton” for six and a half years, Barry refused to disclose US military secrets—a choice which earned him ongoing torture. To survive, he and his comrades sacrificed for one another, used their minds for entertainment, found novel ways to communicate, and held true to the values they had adopted earlier in their lives. Lt. Col. Barry Bridger is a true American hero whom I am honored to call a friend. He is a deep well of wisdom and humor.

At an early age, Matt was drawn to music, film, and video as creative expressions, learning to play multiple instruments and interning in a video company in Kansas. His life changed dramatically when he became a father at the age of sixteen, but he continued to pursue a career in video production. In 2014, he founded a video production company named Reech in the West Bottoms of Kansas City, which led to Matt serving as the videographer at Vineyard Church. In this interview, Matt shares about the ups and downs of his life, his spiritual journey, and his passion for photography and telling stories through video.

In this episode, Spirituality Adventures podcast host, Fred Herron, shares a teaching on one of his favorite parables of Jesus—The Good Samaritan. Tom Langhofer is the Pastor of Recovery at Church of the Resurrection. Tom shares his journey of recovery from alcoholism and how God called him into pastoral ministry. Adam Hamilton introduced me to Tom, and I am so thankful for his life and ministry. Over two years ago Tom’s daughter, Erin Langhofer, was shot and killed as she stood near food trucks during a First Friday event. It was a fight between strangers that ended Erin’s life, and the shooter was recently sentenced to second degree murder and armed criminal action. Through this tragic circumstance, Tom has remained sober and faithful. This is an amazing story of faith.
In this podcast I interview Mikala Petillo, known as Miki P, a Kansas City singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Her music is a refreshing indie folk/rock style and her lyrics explore relationships, healing, and hope. Her creativity and spirituality blend in a beautiful tapestry of sounds and words which touch the soul. All of us share our personal experiences with shame and how we have sought to recover from this universal human condition. Mark Whitacre is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating podcast interviews I have ever done (along side Tamrat Layne). Mark earned a PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry from Cornell University after which his career soared with Archer Daniels Midland (AMD). At a young age, Mark was a top executive at AMD and living a jet set lifestyle. However, he ended up becoming a whistleblower for the FBI in the largest corporate price-fixing case in US history. Mark was sentenced to nine years in federal prison for embezzling 9.5 million dollars from AMD while assisting the FBI’s investigation. Mark met Chuck Colson while he was in prison and became a follower of Jesus. A couple of books, a documentary, and a movie came out on Mark’s life. Matt Damon played Mark Whitacre in The Informant! which was directed by Steven Soderbergh in 2009. Today Mark Whitacre works with Coke Consolidated and the T-Factor helping business owners develop faith-based friendly work cultures. Don’t miss this inspirational episode!
Andrew Potter is an Army Ranger who did three tours in Afghanistan. He also loves rock climbing! This is my first interview with a rock climber, so that automatically make it one of my favorites. I’ve been rock climbing over forty years, so this is fun. Andrew is co-founder of RoKC which is the premier rock climbing gym in Kansas City with three locations. It was Jessica’s dad whom she had never met. At the age of thirty-nine, Jessica meets her dad for the first time—The Reverend Jimmie Bratcher. Matt Pryor is the lead singer/songwriter for The Get Up Kids. The band was formed in 1995 and toured with Green Day and Weezer. They gained a loyal following and headlined tours in America, Japan, Europe, and South American. Matt also founded The New Amsterdams and has put out several solo albums. One of my favorites is “Momento Mori” which is a stripped down, folk-rock album. He has also done two children’s albums. In this podcast, we talk about his career as a singer/songwriter and the importance of mental health as a spiritual journey. The episode closes with his song “Shangri-La.”
Jimmie Bratcher is a blues singer/songwriter. He has also served as a pastor so he is often referred to as the Rev. Jimmie Bratcher. He has released several blues albums and a cookbook that goes along with his newest album, “I’m Hungry.” But my favorite part of this interview is the story of his daughter, Jessica Strong, whom he met for the first time just a few years ago. This is the first time I needed a box of Kleenex for tears in a podcast interview. Jimmie shares the highlights of this amazing story which you can read in the book, The Little Girl Wins. Jordan Taylor Thompson (J. Taylor) is a singer/songwriter based in Kansas City who describes himself as a “seeker of truth.” After growing up in a large family who traveled throughout America singing gospel music in fundamental Bible churches, Jordan began his own spiritual journey of discovery. His lyrics reflect a deep desire to explore the spiritual aspects of life. He has co-written and recorded songs with his brother, Jake Wells, like “Born Again,” “Water,” and “Circle of Life.” In 2019, he released an EP entitled “Boy” with one of my personal favorites—“Indigo Sea.” He continues to write music, and he performs one of his new songs on this podcast. Jake Wells is a Kansas City based singer/songwriter who grew up in a large family that traveled around America performing gospel music. After Jake went through a season of finding his own voice, he released a DIY single entitled “Roll Like Thunder” in 2016. This single went viral with downloads and led to him receiving an invitation to audition on NBC’s television show “The Voice” (Season 15). Jake and I talked about his faith and songwriting journey. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Jake and look forward to doing some events together. His sound has been described as “Funkadelic Bluesy-eyed Soul Rock.” I think you’ll love it.

In this episode, Pastor Michael Brooks and I talk about the origins of the Juneteenth holiday and the importance of social justice as a spiritual issue. Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated by most of the states in America, and Nike and other companies have begun recognizing this holiday. I first learned about this holiday when I was pioneering the large Convoy of Hope outreaches in Swope Park. We would partner with the Juneteenth celebration and provide services for thousands of people in the core of Kansas City. Tamrat Layne is the former Prime Minister of Ethiopia. In the 1970’s he became part of a political student movement in Ethiopia. From 1977 to 1991 he and his friends raised an army of 150,000 which overthrew the communist dictator, Mengistu Haile. Tamrat became the Prime Minister of the new government and helped author the current constitution. He began studying free market economies and had a falling out with his friends. He was sent to prison in 1996 and his wife and children were exiled to a Kenyan refugee camp. After twelve years of solitary confinement and an amazing spiritual experience, he was released from prison in 2008. He and his wife live in Denver, Colorado today. Jon Terrey is a singer, songwriter, musician in the Kansas City area. Jon started his career with the heavy metal band Chariot. At their peak, Chariot played two hundred shows a year and played at festivals like Cornerstone which drew crowds of 30,000 people. In 2015, he started playing with Dan Smith’s Kansas City based band Listener. He has also done several solo albums with Stolen Nation and The Threats. His most recent solo album is an excellent alt country album called Solitaire. He and his fiancé run a vegan hot dog cart at events and clubs around Kansas City. Ben Wendt is a high energy producer of multiple creative projects. His newest album release is a punk rock concept album with his band The Way Way Back entitled “Baggage or You’re Never Going to Leave It All Behind.” One of my favorite songs from that album is “Kintsugi” which is the Japanese artistic process of repairing broken pottery, a beautiful metaphor for this album. Ben is also the podcast host for Ope! Radio which is one of the best ways to discover some fantastic music from Kansas City and surrounding areas. He is also co-owner of the RINO, an event space in North Kansas City. Ben and I enjoyed talking about creativity and spirituality in this episode.

Harmony Eccles is a friend, artist, musician, wife, and mother who lives in Berlin, Germany. I have always loved her paintings. In the this podcast episode, I interview Nate Allen. Nate is a husband, father, friend, mystic, writer, and songsmith based in Kansas City, who has been touring the US since 2004. He toured a punk rock band for a decade, Destroy Nate Allen, and his newest endeavor is Good Saint Nathaniel. The project debut, Hide No Truth, has been hailed by critics as “an introspective masterwork” (IDIOTEQ) and “an earnest, melancholic, and impossible to forget album” (SpinDitty). Nate grew up in a challenging Christian environment which included various forms of spiritual abuse and workaholism. His lyrics dive deep into his journey of disillusionment and hope. In addition to his singing and songwriting career, he is currently studying to become a licensed therapist.

I thought, “Sounds like something I need.” Turns out, it's an excellent book. Faith is a Licensed Professional Counselor and board supervisor in the State of Texas. She is also a Certified Sexologist through The American College of Sexologists International. She is experienced in working with individual, family, and group work with community mental health settings and partial hospitalization programs. She has worked with trauma, PTSD, and the veteran community. She earned a B.A. in Psychology at the University of Oklahoma, M.A. (Community Counseling), and Ph.D. (Counselor Education and Supervision) from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She did a TEDx talk entitled “Shame, Sex, and Silence” in 2013, and she is the author of several books on emotional health and intimacy. Hope you enjoy it. I did.

Amy shares her story and her heart for healing with compassion and insight. She has provided dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) in a private practice since October of 2000. Amy trained with DBT developer Marsha Linehan, and she has provided training to numerous agencies, universities, and hospitals on DBT. She has extensive knowledge and experience in treating people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and other complex mental disorders. Amy is a graduate of the University of Kansas and holds a master’s degree in social welfare. She is the author of two skills workbooks: You Untangled and You Empowered.

Everyday addictions are something we all deal with on a regular basis. Families can develop patterns of addiction as well as individuals. These daily struggles with bad habits can grow and become more detrimental over time.
