Ciaran Murtagh chair ISME joined Conall this morning to talk the future of SMEs in Ireland and the challenges that they are currently facing, Ciaran talked about education and upskilling being essentials for entrepreneurs and employees. Ciaran Murtagh is Managing Director of Shay Murtagh Precast, a family company and leading specialist in the design manufacture and installation of precast concrete products. Joining Conall this morning was Master Distiller at The Dublin Liberties Distillery, Darryl McNally. The new craft distillery will open in October creating up to 20 jobs. The announcement was made as three enormous three tonne copper stills arrived at the distillery over the weekend, following a 1,515km journey from Germany to Dublin. The mammoth stills were craned across the Dublin Liberties’ skyline and carefully lowered into the grounds of the distillery to be assembled on site.

The distillery will focus on producing a range of whiskies, including those catering for the growing global demand for premium and super-premium spirits. Global consumption of super-premium Irish whiskey has increased by more than 12% annually over the last five years. Upon completion in October, production of all the company’s whiskey brands including The Dubliner Irish Whiskey, The Dublin Liberties and The Dead Rabbit Irish Whiskey will move to The Dublin Liberties Distillery. The Dubliner Irish Whiskey is the one of the fastest growing Irish whiskies globally, with the range of products in The Dublin Liberties and The Dubliner Irish Whiskey portfolios selling in more than 30 countries, worldwide. Rosi Goswell, founder of Tuath Irish Whiskey Glass joined Conall in studio this morning, she is on a mission to establish an official Irish whiskey glass. With the re-birth of Irish Whiskey production, the development of new world class distilleries, visitor centres and The Irish Whiskey Tourism Trail, Rosi thnks its time for a contemporary glass to become the iconic symbol unifying Irish Whiskey drinkers around the world.

Nova Leah recently picked up the Grand Prix Startup of the Year Award, scooping a €10,000 cash prize, at the National Startup Awards 2018 powered by Bank of Ireland and Enterprise Ireland. ECI Lighting was establishing in 1960, making it one of Ireland's oldest lighting companies. They provide a valuable service of replacing your old lights with the latest low energy LED bulbs. The company is set to invest €25 million into their business to fund a new energy services business. Commercial Director, Mark Connolly joined Conall in the studio to tell him all about ECI Lighting and their plans of how they will be using the €25 million.

The funding is to be primarily used to facilitate commercial clients in upgrading their existing lighting systems to energy efficient LED technology but it is envisaged that other clean energy technologies will also be offered. Inspirefest is a unique international festival, which deals with everything from technology, and science to design and the arts. This year's conference takes place on June 21st and 22nd, in the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and will feature over 50 speakers.

Garret Flower, Co-Founder and Global CEO of Parkpnp was back on the Sunday Business Show this week to talk about the business, which has recently expanded into The Benelux region. This came after a €400,000 financial injection and are they are also looking to crowdfund an additional €200,000. Parkpnp is a digital parking company and app which works with governments, businesses and homeowners to connect motorists in need with underused spaces. Airsorted gives those who own property in Dublin the opportunity to list a vacant property on notable travel websites including Airbnb, Booking.com and HomeAway. The company services all bookings to a property on behalf of the owner for a small percentage of the property’s earnings.

Mountmellick Development Association (MDA) is a voluntary community development organisation which supports local, integrated, social, cultural and economic development. Figures from EU studies suggest that women are half as likely as men to own their own business. While the number of women setting up their own businesses in Ireland has grown in recent years, women are still under represented in entrepreneurship activities. NovaUCD is a growhouse for entrepreneurs and has recently added three new early stage Start-Ups to their group. The community of entrepreneurs at University College Dublin’s Centre for New Ventures and Entrepreneurs now has over 25 companies, employing some 200 people.

Marine Biologist and Entrepreneur, Paul O`Connor is the latest to join the community and this week he also joined Conall on the Sunday Business Show to discuss his company, This is Seaweed.
The company, which was established by Paul O`Connor in 2015, is building a global organic food brand and aims to encourage consumers to engage with seaweeds and to understand the benefits they possess with regards to nutrition and taste. The Kildare brothers business won big at the 2018 National Enterprise Awards taking home the overall title. Their business developed an automated mineral dosing system for farmers, which provides over 50,000 dairy cows with liquid minerals through their drinking water.

Bord Bia's Bloom Festival is back for again this year celebrating its 11th anniversary. With sustainable energy on the rise, there are more and more wind turbines popping up around the country. Who is maker of these turbines you might wonder. TeamSBS members the CoderDojo Foundation have been on the Sunday Business Show a number of times over the years and their work with young people and digital entrepreneurship is always something we admire. The General Manager of the Foundation, Rosa Langhammer joined Conall on the show this week to speak about their flagship event the Coolest Projects Awards is coming to the RDS on May 26th.
There will be over 1000 young people from across Ireland and the world showcasing their technology projects and businesses. 12 year old, Aisling Cowap is one of the young contenders, who will be taking part in this year's event. Aisling has been coding for the last 3 years and her project is a website called Girls Do Code which encouraging more girls to get involved in coding, informing them what's involved and also showcasing some famous women in the tech industry.

Hamlet Sweeney is a music hit factory who has worked with the likes of Meatloaf, Status Quo and UB40. His latest project The Nucleus is the first Irish company to bring the modern model of collaborative songwriting to Ireland. The business provides somewhere where creative talents, such as songwriter, producers and artists can work together on projects in a supportive and creative space dedicated to musical collaboration. Skunkworks is a Northern Ireland Surfboard company, founded by brothers Ricky and Chris Martin. The unique selling point of Ricky and Chris's surf business is the performance and life span of the boards, which has brought the global interest and over 100 investors to the company. In just one week on a crowdfunding platform Skunkworks raised a massively impressive £405,000.

Following lots of research into different types of animals and "alternative farming" Joe decided it had to be the Alpaca! He now has a herd of over 50 Alpacas, many which have won awards and appeared in numerous Films and TV series. The business recently went viral after word spread that Joe also takes groups on Alpaca Treks up the Wicklow Mountains at weekends and even treats them to some Prosecco and strawberries.

Smart Storage is a Wicklow based company which provides innovative modular under stairs storage systems. The company was originally established by CEO Paul Jacob in 2011. Paul told Conall that it was a growing ‘shoe crisis’ in his home which led him him and his wife Clodagh to developed the innovative storage system.

Founder of Nasal Medical and former winner of AIB Start Up Academy 2016, Martin O'Connell has become a regular guest on the Sunday Business Show and was back again this week with more news about his business. For those who don't know, Nasal Medical produce devices which combat sleeping disorders and protects users against seasonal allergies. Conall himself has tried and tested the product and claimed that it did wonders for his snoring condition.

Since last speaking with him, Martin's business has gone on to form a successful partnership with American Pharmaceutical company, Mylan. They now plan to expand further and will be rolling their products out across Europe this year. They have also developed a new app, which they are about to launch along with a wearable device that vibrates when you have a sleep apnea or snoring episode. Returning to work following a maternity leave can be a huge challenge for some women. Whether returning to the same role or finding a different job, neither is easy, especially for someone who has also just become a mother. To help women overcome these challenge Geraldine Gallagher and her company Inspire Coaching runs Maternity Coaching workshops and one on one sessions. Geraldine spoke to Conall about the many challenges which a mother returning to work may face. These included a variety of possible factors, from a loss of confidence to dealing with changes in their life and work environments.

Family run business Cloudberry Bakery was set up by Maureen and Sam Harrison in 2010 making high end wedding cakes. Since then their business, based in Castlemaine, Co. Kerry, has pivoted from cakes to spreads. Sam told Conall how their sea salted caramel was the filler for many cakes and was in high demand. The filling was even being sought after alone, so they decided to get it into jars and put them into their concession shop in Brown Thomas, Co. Cork to test the market. The business has since gone from strength to strength and their spreads now include…salted caramel, chocolate praline, chocolate orange, whiskey caramel and chocolate caramel with fennel pollen.
