"What keeps me up at night is that the statistics are just sobering about access to books across our country. We know that 45% of our nation's kids live in neighborhoods that lack public libraries, bookstores or homes where there's a stock and flow of books. 67% of our schools in our nation's lowest income neighborhoods can't afford to buy books at retail prices. And so when you take that data, the overarching result is that 32 million American kids go without books."

We've seen it in education as well. There's not a teacher shortage. We still have teachers. We've still got the same number of teachers out there, they're just not in the classroom. It's not a teacher shortage. We have a feeling valued, shortage. Feeling needed, shortage. Feeling relevant, feeling important, feeling equipped and not overwhelmed shortage. You've probably heard this saying people don't quit their job, they quit their boss. I also want to think about it like this, people don't quit their job, they quit the system."

First, I have talked to educators that understand what it means to teach students to read according to what the research tells us; however, they feel like they have no influence with others. Second, I have seen highly charged interactions on social media when someone understands reading in a different way. These highly charged interactions come with negative comments and I would imagine clenched fists; however, that is no way to influence someone.
