“CJ” shares her retirement story of adventures from her retirement at age 52 to present age of 75, she created the life she wanted to experience.
Born in rural Idaho “CJ” never let a fear of anything overcome her ability to move forward. From training Llamas to pack, to living in a houseboat on Lake Powell and everything in between, this lady just kept exploring and living her life to the fullest. My favorite quote of our interview was “Fear is the worst of our enemies”. True, true, true!!
It never ceases to amaze me how and where I meet such interesting people with such incredible stories. Which just goes to show you….everyone has a story!

Our last podcast was the kick off to The Love a Senior CENTER project, as a part of the Rural Exposure projects within the company.
Our mission then was to re-open the closed local senior center of this small rural community in Northeastern Colorado.
Well, we did it!!
This project began on January 12 and the Senior Center has now been open since March 1, 2023!
This podcast shares what has happened the past 6 months, along with an interview with Betty Jo Rogers and Charlotte Smith, two of the club’s members who frequent the senior center known as the Wray Fifty Five and Over Club.
With over 1 Million older adults being served in America each year by local senior centers, the need for the services will only continue to grow as the boomer tsunami strengthens. The need for senior centers and a central gathering place for social, informational, and instructional events is becoming more and more important than ever before.

Born in 1920, Joseph “Joe” Nichols immigrated to America at the age of 23 from Barbados when his parents sent for him. He was drafted into the United States Navy during WWII in 1943, and was assigned to Pearl Harbor.
Listen as Joe reminisces over his 102 years and shares some insights to living a long life along with his stories of his wife, their 11 children, his occupation as a tailor, his dream of being an electrician and more.

Rich shares his story from growing up in the Belleville area to his college and professional baseball careers and brings us full circle with his mission for the Gateway Grizzlies and the baseball park.
Rich is also the founder and president of East County Enterprises, Inc., a real estate management company that has been in business in the East County Area of the St. Louis Region area development for the past 35 years.
As Chairman of the Board of Touchette Regional Hospital and member of the Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital Board of Directors, Mr. Sauget has been instrumental in developing and expanding healthcare services to low income families in the Southwestern Illinois area. Mr. Sauget also played a key role in the development of Archview Economic Corporation. In addition to serving on the board of TRH, Mr. Sauget is the Chairman of the St. Clair County Building Commission and is a member of the Regional Chamber and Growth Association, Regional Business Council, and Lambert Airport Board.
Rich enjoyed a long career in professional baseball with both the Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants.

What a great story Calvin shares about his experiences over his 35 year career; the players, the coaches, even stories on Rams football, and many more celebs you’d love to meet!
Born and raised in Edwardsville, IL right outside St. Louis, Calvin attended broadcast school and began his career with KKID 92.9 radio station which eventually lead him to the Associated Press and what a story! Wow.

This episode of Senior Moments shares her story of entering into retirement after a rewarding career in nursing, and how it all evolved to her learning to play the harp to then use as a way to give back to her passion for the Alzheimer’s community.
Dawn and her husband Jim live in Woodland Park, Colorado (oustide of Colorado Springs). As you will learn she is the incoming Governor for the Rocky Mountain District of Kiwanis International (a big deal), so she is a busy gal! She also is teaching the ever popular Pickle Ball and keeps up her own game on a regular basis.

Welcome Ron Marlowe to Senior Moments from the state of Maine! He and his twin brother Jeffry began playing piano at the age of 4, performing under the name “The Marlowe Brothers”.
The brothers were nationally acclaimed and by age 11 and debuted with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Their adolescent resume included appearances on The Tonight Show with Steve Allen, The Milton Berle Show, The Arthur Godfrey Show, and The Gary Moore Show. Additionally, they were featured on the show “I’ve Got A Secret”. You can watch their show here: I've Got a Secret - December 19, 1966
The brothers went on to be the featured pianists with the New York Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony, The Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. They played together professionally well into their 50’s.

Ron now gives piano lessons to young performers in Maine and Pennsylvania respectively, and fishes anywhere and everywhere. Sadly his twin brother Jeffry, passed away in 2021.

Mark’s career in telecommunications from Cable TV to wireless internet and eventually satellite TV has come full circle, entering into his retirement life in Markdale, Ontario Canada. Hear Mark’s story about “retiring” from the corporate world, moving to his present home in rural Ontario.

Listen as Judy shares her story of joining the Kiwanis Club of Redlands, CA as the first woman in California, after the organization’s vote to allow women to join! Judy has followed her passion of helping children through the Kiwanis organization for 40 years, striving for her 50 year goal!
You will also hear a great little tidbit from Judy’s childhood regarding the emperor of Japan….who knew??!! Become inspired by Judy’s energy and appreciation for her involvement in the lives of children, especially now at the age of 80!

Carol Janousek shares her story of being adopted at birth and then in her late 50’s finding her birth family. Not only that, but our host Carol Chiarito also shares her story as the two met and became “facebook friends” in a group there for adoptees.
Mrs. Janousek’s story has all sorts of twists and turns as she shares even more about her own children and we have a special treat from her husband Larry at the end!

This week of Veterans Day is the perfect time to share this two-part episode featuring Michael Mikelson and the story of the movie “Missing Over Tokyo”. Part one will take us back to the beginning of this journey when he was 11 years old curious about a WWII picture he found in the family scrapbook. Part two will lead us through the happenstances of events that led to his ongoing findings, uncovering of events and stories that have led to the making of the movie.
From that time as the curious 11 year old his life revolved around history, in fact it was one of the main reasons he chose undergraduate and graduate studies in History. He then spent time as a project manager at corporations such as Boeing, Microsoft, and AT&T Solutions. But once he discovered in-combat film footage of his great-uncle's B-29 crew in 2008, he switched his focus on learning how to make documentary and dramatic narrative films and has been and is currently traveling the US finding veterans to interview on-camera, and going to research archives for the making of this film.
If you are a history buff, this is the story you won’t want to miss! If you have family members who were involved in WWII, YOU will love this story as well his tips on doing your own “research” into his questions: “What led us to this moment?" And “What is the story behind this picture?”
Michael is currently negotiating the film production, so take a listen and learn the back story, so you will be ready for the movie series!

Spending time with Gene Verdu, or as his friends refer to him, “Uncle Gene,” was such an amazing day for me! This episode was created to be the kick-off podcast for The Love A Senior Day in St. Clair County, (Belleville, IL) in October 2021. This episode of Senior Moments welcomes the founders of Forgotten Angels, from Jacksonville, FL Kathi Snow and Sandi King.
Kathi, Sandi along with their mother Peggy McKenney founded Forgotten Angels as a non-profit organization and have grown this idea over the years to what it is today, serving over 36 nursing homes and over 3000 elders last year.
Peggy, originally from Lexington, KY is the mother of 3 retired and has lived in the Jacksonville since 2004. As co-founder of Forgotten Angels, she is the treasurer and as you will hear, is the liaison between the Angles and the nursing home activity directors. Even though she is in her 80's, you will hear how this lady just keeps things rolling!
Sandi serves as the Vice President and is usually the "voice" of the Angels getting the word out about their activities and making connections.
Kathi is the President of Forgotten Angels. Everything goes through Kathi! She is in charge of all decision making for all Angel activities and is the "spread sheet" organizer for all they do!
The Forgotten Angels continued their mission as best they could in 2020 and are off to a busy year already in 2021. They have delivered 'treat bags' to nursing homes for Valentines, Easter, Mother's Day, and more!
You will hear about their jelly sales that help fund what they do, which is coming up on June 26th at Jerry's Grille 13170 Atlantic Blvd, Jacksonville, FL from 3 pm - 5 pm. There will be auction items from local merchants, a 50/50 raffle, Forgotten Angels t-shirts and of course, their famous home-made jellies. Also, a percentage of all food and drink purchases will go to the Forgotten Angels! So if you are in the area, mark your calendar!

Rounding out our Ms Senior Jacksonville pageant we will hear from the 2019 Senior Queen herself, Brenda Griffin. She describes herself with having a natural passion for learning, teaching, and sharing information. Currently, she manifests her passion through her roles of Bible Teacher, Resiliency Coach at her local YMCA and financial literacy and wellness advocate.
Before retiring from paid work, Brenda spent over 30 years in the financial services industry in various Human Resources roles. Her professional experience includes leadership consulting, employee relations, diversity and inclusion education, staffing, and development consulting.
As a way to “push the envelope,” in 2019, Brenda participated in the Ms. Senior Jacksonville (FL) pageant and, subsequently, was crowned the winner! The pageant offers women 60 years old and older an opportunity to achieve personal growth, serve their communities and inspire women of all ages. In addition to the above benefits, as Ms. Senior Jacksonville, Brenda broadened the reach of her financial advocacy work and deepened her impact in the community.
Brenda is most proud of being a wife, mother, and grandmother. She earned several professional certifications and holds a Masters of Education from Florida State University, where she majored in Counseling and Human Systems.

Senior Moments welcomes Lynette Sorrells Hipsher, the 2019 Ms. Senior Diva Jacksonville. Lynette is a Jacksonville, FL native, a graduate from Andrew Jackson Senior High School, and a former USFL Jacksonville Bulls Cheerleader. Lynette is a Certified Nursing Assistant and owns her own in-home senior daycare business.
She and her husband Michael Hipsher 2 Daughters, 2 sons, and 4 grandchildren between them.
In this interview you will hear what Lynette learned from being in the pageant, why she decided to sign up, and how she will share her experience with others.
When she applied for the pageant she shared that she wanted to show the Women of Jacksonville that we are Strong, Independent and Self Sufficient. I want to be an Inspiration to all women over the age of 50, that you can be anything, and you can do anything as long as you keep putting one foot forward.
She also states on her attitude about winning the contest was that she stepped out of her comfort zone, set a goal that she didn't think she could achieve, and succeeded beyond why my wildest dreams.

Welcome back to part 2 of our interview with Kenyonn Demps the founder and President of A Seasoned Affair, the home of the Ms Senior Jacksonville pageant, and the Ms Senior Diva pageant.
I met Kenyonn while working in Jacksonville with the Love A Senior Day in 2019, the story she shared with me then about her “WHY” for doing these pageants, led me right back to her for this podcast so I can share it with all of you! You will be impressed and possibly even inspired to look at the pageant world in a new light, especially a pageants for mature women! I know I did.
It all began around March 2008 when Jacksonville’s Mayor Peyton noted that his goal was for “Jacksonville to become the most senior friendly city in the State of Florida”. That led Kenyonn to think there was no better way to acknowledge our seniors than for Ms. Senior Jacksonville to proudly represent her peers and our beautiful city and to participate in the Ms. Senior Florida pageant. So with a lot of hard work and a huge vision, she did it!
Kenyonn Demps works full time as a nursing home Executive Director, she is a former radio host of Senior Chat with Kenyonn, a wife, mother, and a great friend to many. She strives to enrich the lives of seniors through education, empowerment and, pageantry.
The 2021 pageant will be held on July 24, 2021 at the University of Florida’s University Center at 2 PM. Tickets will go on sale in June and are not sold at the door, so get yours early at aseasonedaffair.com and click on tickets!

This episode of Senior Moments features Kenyonn Demps the founder and President of A Seasoned Affair, the home of the Ms Senior Jacksonville pageant, and the Ms Senior Diva pageant.
I met Kenyonn while working in Jacksonville with the Love A Senior Day in 2019, the story she shared with me then about her “WHY” for doing these pageants, led me right back to her for this podcast so I can share it with all of you! You will be impressed and possibly even inspired to look at the pageant world in a new light, especially a pageants for mature women! I know I did.
It all began around March 2008 when Jacksonville’s Mayor Peyton noted that his goal was for “Jacksonville to become the most senior friendly city in the State of Florida”. That led Kenyonn to think there was no better way to acknowledge our seniors than for Ms. Senior Jacksonville to proudly represent her peers and our beautiful city and to participate in the Ms. Senior Florida pageant. So with a lot of hard work and a huge vision, she did it!
Kenyonn Demps works full time as a nursing home Executive Director, she is a former radio host of Senior Chat with Kenyonn, a wife, mother, and a great friend to many. She strives to enrich the lives of seniors through education, empowerment and, pageantry.
The 2021 pageant will be held on July 24, 2021 at the University of Florida’s University Center at 2 PM. Tickets will go on sale in June and are not sold at the door, so get yours early at aseasonedaffair.com and click on tickets!

Carol's cocker family includes Heidi in 2002, Chelsea, Haley, Abby and Prissy (who have all passed over the rainbow bridge), as well as Holly, Halle, Chloe, Katie, Coco and Maddy.
