DecentraCast S1Ep20 Vessel Desktop A Hive Wallet
What is Vessell? Vessel is a desktop Hive wallet for Windows, mac and Linux. It's a beautiful ap that is working absolutely great for me.
I'll be honest I don't know everything it can do but it's fricking awesome.
It's encrypted if you choose just in case you loose your laptop or it gets stolen. So your Hive is well protected.
Here is the source code if you want to compile it.
And here you can get the binaires if you dont want to compile and just want to install and go!
In the video I install it on ElementaryyOS 6 Odin using dpkg on the deb file. It took my slow pc a little to install since I was live streaming the desktop and recording at the same time. But note that when I installed it on my ThinkPad it was done extremely fast.

Drawing the Line in the Defense of Others
What I am talking about I started out talking about how good ElementaryOs is to use. It's pretty light weight and just buzzes along and gets out of your way to let you work.
I talk about the philosophy of switching all the apps to flatpaks and how much better it actually is in practice for the Linux ecosystem as a whole.
They have done so good and gotten big enough to start to influence upstream projects such as Gnome.
It truly is a beautiful, easy to use distro that just works!
Then I went down a rabbit hole with some recent drama Recently a somewhat large Linux "personality" thought it would be a good idea to spout his thoughts on the way some software developers live their lives outside of developing software.
He is entitled to his views. But he not known for (at least has made it his career's objective) to voicing his opinions on anything outside of Linux and tech. He's not listened to for his "lifes opinions". Much like when multi million dollar rock stars, athletes and actors/actresses spout their opinions on how much poor, average, everyday people that have to do manual labor to buy food paycheck to paycheck. Just shut up and throw the ball, play the song or say your line with emotion.
So sorry I got a little political in this. But ya know, sometimes you have to in the defense of others.
Moral of the story dont be a dick.

Ecency
Just a quick run through of the dapp Ecency. IMO it's the best and easiest frontend to the Hive social media blockchain.
It's a webapp, it's a cross platform desktop app and it's even got android and ios apps!

So I might be crazy but...
You may have noticed from the last 2 videos that I've been using an avatar instead of my face. I guess you could say I've
been in transition, lol. I'm switching over to being a Vtuber. Why? Am I a weeb? NO Am I big anime fan? NO. I just think it's
a cool and rather easy way to make more interesting conent. I find it much more interesting to watch an animated avatar
on screen than a static picture on the desktop.
This avatar is just one that I came up with all quick and dirty like. I'm using veetuber-mini to animate the png files and it just
opens in OBS Studio as a window capture. It's pretty slick and looks to be easy to set up and just fire up obs in the future and pound
out episodes.
It uses hardly any resources on my old Frankenputer so I may try doing some streaming with it. Hopefully this works out as a cool segqayinto building my full streamer.
I'll do a more indepth video on how I set it up if anybody is interested.
This avatar will not be the same one I use all the time. I have my daughter working on making me one similar to this one but a full body one that I can then puppeteer the head and arms with it.
I chose this mainly because I think it's cool. But I would be remiss if I didnt also admit I looked pretty hard at it because literally nobody else on 3Speak is doing any Vtubing or PNGTubing. I just think its cool and cant wait to do more.

I seem to have found a happy spot
I think I finally found a happy spot with recording. I'm still using Simple Screen Recorder but have added in Non-Mixer since it supports plugins. I do a quick run through of it.
Let me know if the audio sounds better.
I ran across what I think is a bug in the search functions that Ecency and PeakD use. I go over that and ask if anybody knows what it is.
I've already alerted @good-karma and he is looking into it.
I also ask what kind of tutorials you would like to see about Hive. I'm mostly talking about the dapps and not any crypto investment advice hee. I dont have any experience with that.

DecentraCast S1Ep12 Be Careful What You Wish For
Today I talk about the hearing on Capitol Hill yesterday where Frances Haugen, a former Facebook data scientist turned whistleblower, testified what we all knew already. Facebook is an evil corporation that prioritized corp profits over the health and well being of it's users.
Which, by the way, she did fail to mention that it's users are products. But that is a whole different episode.
Todays episode was inspired by all the comments on I saw on Twitter yesterday about the evils of Facebook. And I agree with most of them. But the ones that were and are still relishing in the demise of Facebook and other social media arent getting the broader picture.
This is a power grab and nothing more than fuel for their fire to take control of social media. If they cant do that they will destroy it by regulating it out.
To those nay sayers that say they cant touch Hive I say you are correct. They cant and wont be able to break the technology of Hive. But they can and will go after the front ends. The dapps themselves will be in danger. This is where desktop and mobile apps such as Ecency. Aureal and the 3Speak app thats in development will become the most important pieces of the Hive ecosystem.
I do hope that the devs have some form of "escape route" where Hive can run "offline" whether through SMS or something similar.
Freedom of Speech is what at stake here. And the Facebook whistle blower is just another useful pawn in the game.

How I pick a Hive Witness to Vote for

This is by no means "the definitive" way to choose how to cast your vote. But it's the way I do it. You can choose your own way.
Of course you can be lazy and just do what is known as Proxy voting. Thats just choosing someone else to vote for you which is a
great way if you are just starting out. Just make sure you pick someone you trust. Because your vote will be cast with whoever they choose.
But I go through a checklist and little background on the witness before they get my vote.
The must meet these criteria:
- Be active on the blockchain. No one or two year old posts. Must be at least once a month. I understand that most of them are coders and devs and are busy.
But you gotta show me you are active on the chain you are working on. * Be vested in Hive! I dont want to see signs of you just setting up a node and never doing anything on chain. Again I understand the being busy part but at least
be active in the community. Whether on Hive or other social media tring to get people onto Hive

Too Much Choice on Hive
The latests HiveChat got me thinking about this Is it possible that there is too much choice in dapps on Hive?
HiveDapp.com Lists 43 total Heres some of the of the larger ones.
- 4 media
- 4 utilites
- 5 interfaces
- 8 Games
- 12 social - This is where the problem lies, obviously.
The problem (at least on this site) is that these are listed as social sites. Which they are but, they aren't. This goes back to what I keep saying. Focus on the dapps in the marketing and not the blockchain.
The dapps need to distinguish themselves from each other.
On the list are the "big 3". PeakD, Hive.blog and Ecency.
All 3 are geared towards long form blog type posts with images, video embeds, etc. But they each should do something to differentiate themselves outside of just looking different.
Ecency seems to be the one that is making the biggest attempt to be different. Focussing on the desktop and mobile app aspects. I could see them morphing into more of a WordPress.com type thing.
