Today’s episode features guest host Michael Upshall (guest editor, Charleston Briefings) who talks with Russell Michalak, Library Director, Goldey-Beacom College, and Founding Partner, Inclusive Knowledge Solutions.
Russell has been immersed in libraries throughout his life. His mother was a librarian, and he kept coming back to librarianship despite an initial rebellion to pursue a library career. He has worked in libraries of all different sizes, budgets and resources over the last 20 years. He also has a background in history and says history is important to study as it is present now in everything we do and provides context for current events, government, and politics and also helps when working with people to have an understanding of where people come from and learning empathy for how people come to different places. In this conversation, Russell talks with Michael about a birthday gift he received at 10 years old that helped shape his career, the evolution of Goldey-Beacom College, and the challenges and innovations in library culture there. He also shares insights on how he sees the role of AI in libraries, the importance of building relationships between libraries and faculty, and the need for AI literacy among students. He says the democratization of access to AI tools and fostering a positive library culture are both very important.

Today’s episode features guest host Michael Upshall (guest editor, Charleston Briefings) who talks with Orland Hoeber, Professor and Head, Department of Computer Science, at University of Regina; Founder, Dilex Search.
Orland says from an early age, he has always been interested in problem solving, trying to make sense of things and understand how things worked. He gravitated towards computing slowly, starting off in science-based disciplines and a degree in mathematics. He moved away from mathematics, which he says was strict and precise with structured rules, to computer science for an outlet to leverage his creativity, which opened the opportunity for doing creative problem solving, and he earned his graduate degrees in computer science. In this interview, Orland talks with Michael about searching, the library reference desk, and searching within GenAI. He has done research into human-computer interaction, specifically searching, and has recently launched a new search tool, Dilex, for saving searches between desktop and mobile devices. He says there is a gap between what a user needs and what is being provided, and for the last eight to ten years, he has been working in the realm of digital libraries helping people find information in libraries when their search tasks are complex in nature.

Steve has enjoyed a wide-ranging academic publishing career, with half spent in book publishing and half spent in journal publishing, and has held senior roles at AIP Publishing, Frontiers, the American Psychological Association, and Wiley. But, before Steve began his unexpected career in publishing, he studied philosophy at McGill University, earned a PhD in mathematical logic; and he refers to himself as a “frustrated philosopher.” In this conversation, Steve shares his journey into academic publishing, his insights on the evolution of publishing, particularly in the context of AI and digital transformation, emphasizing the need for publishers to adapt to new technologies and changing reader expectations. He talks with Michael about the importance of structured knowledge and metadata in the age of AI, arguing that the future of publishing lies in moving beyond traditional formats to embrace knowledge as a service.

Today’s episode features guest host Michael Upshall (guest editor, Charleston Briefings) who talks with Ben Lee, Assistant Professor, University of Washington Information School.
Ben initially trained as an astrophysicist with a PhD in Human Computer Interaction, but he isn’t out there looking for asteroids these days. He is currently an editor for Digital Humanities Quarterly and teaches an MLIS course. He says moving from telescope pipelines and understanding all the questions around how astronomers make catalogs of stars and celestial objects out of images isn’t too dissimilar from questions around OCRing large-scale document collections. Ben also talks with Michael about how his grandmother survived the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, and the time he spent after college in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and in their archive, and digital questions led him to apply for a computer science program. He also talks with Michael about creating Newspaper Magazine, an archive of documentation of hundreds of millions of pages pertaining to survivors and victims of the Holocaust. Michael presented at the CNI Fall Conference on AI and Libraries, and says he believes fully open sciences is the best way forward and really our only way forward if we are to do this right.

Today’s episode features guest host Michael Upshall (guest editor, Charleston Briefings) who talks with Zakayo Kjellstrom, Investigator, Swedish Agency for the Media, which “works to promote freedom of expression and diversity in the media market, where multiple voices are heard and consumers have access to a wide and accessible range of radio, television and news media.”
Zakayo currently lives in Stockholm, Sweden. He first earned a bachelor’s in cultural studies with a focus on digital culture, and then a master’s in library science, both from Lunds University, where he also worked in the University Library for several years. In this conversation, Zakayo talks with Michael about having just completed his PhD on Shadow Libraries, and why we should be interested in academic piracy and black open access. He says shadow libraries “put the finger on the very issue of publishing in a very explicit way: this needs to circumvent very robust traditional infrastructures in order to get what’s needed to do your job.”

Today’s episode features guest host Michael Upshall (guest editor, Charleston Briefings) who talks with Herbert Van de Sompel, Researcher Fellow at Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) and Guest Professor at Ghent University.
Although Herbert has spent the last 25 to 30 years working in libraries, he doesn’t describe himself as a librarian but as what he calls an “infrastructure plumber.” With a background in mathematics and information science, he has done years of infrastructure work within the library to allow technology to be used to improve research communication. Starting with Ghent University Library, where he did his thesis, and which he says was behind in automation compared to other European libraries, he began with automation of administrative processes, but he says that he didn’t then fully understand what automation in an academic library would be fully about. Herbert got to work with a vision- he didn’t feel that library automation was catalog automation. It was about providing access to all kinds of other sources. In this conversation, we’ll hear how Herbert worked to modernize library services at Ghent, propelling them from way behind to way ahead in automation and his contributions to developing SFX and the OpenURL framework.

Today’s episode features guest host Michael Upshall (guest editor, Charleston Briefings) who talks with Adam Hyde, Founder, Coko (Collaborative Knowledge Foundation).
Adam is known for innovating in publishing. In this conversation, he talks about an interesting career progression and how he transitioned into scholarly publishing. Born in New Zealand, he earned his master’s in philosophy at Waikato, a small University. However, he began his career managing community radio in the 1990s, becoming manager of the station after applying numerous times for the position. He built a recording studio, with a devoted community and events around it, being one of the few independent radio stations in the country, even starting a community TV station, right as the internet was taking off.
Adam moved to Australia and began working for an IT Consultancy, where he was introduced to Linux and streaming. He then moved over to Europe as a media activist and artist and then worked for an independent internet service provider in Amsterdam. He traveled around teaching workshops on media technology and promoting open-sourced software. Adam developed FLOSS Manuals and Book Sprints, and was eventually noticed by PLOS, where he helped design a new journal platform. He applied for funding from the Shuttlesworth Foundation, and used this funding to found Coko, a nonprofit organization that builds open-source publishing tools for scholarly and scientific communication.

In this conversation, Abel talks about beginning his career in engineering and computer science, working on UN demographic data projects in Latin America and creating the early bibliographic system, DocPop. He then earned his Masters in Library Science and, in 1997, co-founded SciELO, a decentralized, open access platform, to improve both visibility and access to Latin American Scientific Journals. Beginning with only 10 journals, SciELO is now used across 17 countries. Abel feels that, despite the success, SciELO is often overlooked globally, possibly due to its Global South origins.

Joy has been President of ACLS since 2019. Prior to this, she was provost and interim president of the CUNY Graduate Center. Joy says she has always had an interest in the classics and has written two books on Roman Political Theory and rhetoric and is currently working on her third. In this conversation, Joy talks about the turn from a highly successful academic career to taking on the role at the nonprofit ACLS, which is very much aligned with academic institutions. Joy says this transition gave her an opportunity to bring to a different context some of the skills that she had gained as an academic administrator, faculty member, scholar, and teacher.

In today’s episode, Matthew Ismail, a Conference Director and Editor in Chief of the Charleston Briefings, talks with Jay Patel, Head of Sales and Business Development for the Americas, Cactus Communications.
Jay says he first learned how to sell in a tough environment by selling printers and copiers door to door. Then, he worked in the publishing industry for over 15 years with a medical publisher and an open access publisher before working as a consultant for startups in video and advertising. Three years ago, he joined Cactus Communications, based in Mumbai, as the head of sales and business development for the Americas, working across all their various brands with publishers and societies to help them integrate technology such as AI into their various different businesses.
Jay says Cactus Communications was founded over 21 years ago as a way to help authors and researchers who spoke English as an additional language to get their content up to a level where it could be published in English journals based out of the west or global North, and it evolved from there to also include not only the editorial side but also technology within the AI space, communications and marketing services, and mobile apps to assist researchers and scientists with discovery and visualization tools.

Matthew and Jignesh talk about his background which began in journalism and accounting and how he came to found Molecular Connections over 20 years ago. Jignesh says the mission of Molecular Connections was the same in 2002 as it is today: to accelerate research. In addition, he says the value proposition for customers is also building a partnership and how to add value by creating new products, incorporating machine learning software, automated workflows and creating new revenue models. He talks about research integrity and ways of finding better reviewers, also using technology to increase customers’ bandwidth to do high value work while saving time and helping editors to make better decisions, also to shorten the time to market between the manuscript and publication. He says Molecular Connections also works to help shorten and improve the cost base of smaller society publishers.

Meg and Steve talk about his new role as President of De Gruyter, and what he sees as the organization’s biggest challenges but also opportunities and what he’s most excited about. Steve talks about the recent merger between De Gruyter and Brill, why it came about and the impact this will have for humanities publishing and scholarship and what it will mean for libraries, also De Gruyter’s ebound initiative and how De Gruyter has been an innovator in developing alternative book funding models through collaboration and bringing people together.
Steve is a long-time participant of the Charleston Conference, and he talks about his experiences at the 2023 Fall event, how open access seemed to be the hot topic, and that we also need to think about OA along with financial sustainability. He feels that the Charleston Community offers more direct engagement with stakeholders and more opportunities for meaningful discussions, and some very important meetings that have taken place in Charleston for him.

Meg and Judy talk about Judy’s diverse background and how she came into the scholarly publishing industry and her current role at Elsevier, one of oldest publishing houses in the world with an incredible history of content, just celebrating the 200th anniversary of their medical journal: The Lancet. She says Elsevier is focused on innovation, and on the data and analytics side and leveraging quality, trusted content to take knowledge to the next level. She also talks about Scopus and its use of Generative AI, which she says helps the librarian enable the researcher to be as effective as possible.
Judy attended the Charleston Conference for the first time this year, and she says how valuable it is to engage in dialogue, and how making connections in person in Charleston is powerful and how it will help everyone learn and grow. She also talks about the keynote in which she presented about “coopetition,” a term which she says is based upon an interconnected ecosystem with the researcher at the center, and that to enable the efficacy of the researcher, all the players need to work tightly together. She says competition is important because when you compete with the best, you drive, push and innovate to do a better job on behalf of your customers.

Dan talks with Matthew about the role of a Communications Consultant in today’s scholarly communication organization and how this public relations role differs from being a “spin doctor.” Dan says that public relations is not so much about pushing out prepared statements as it is a matter of “reading the room,” or listening to people to figure out who they are and what their needs and interests are. A library’s needs will be different from a physicist’s needs, and the needs of a researcher publishing or viewing a paper are different from a manager’s needs, so untangling and aligning them or offering different channels for them for expression and collaboration is the goal. Integrity and Authenticity are very important to establishing trust between an organization and its various constituents.

Adam talks with Matthew about STEM publishing, the physics niche in publishing, and the relationship between the publisher and the customer. He says that, at some level, his job is to help AIP keep the lights on, and Adam explains how the sales of AIP journal subscriptions supports the mission of the society. Libraries do not always consider the fact that the journals have a larger role in the mission of the society, wanting to pay as little as possible for the content, and it is Adam’s job, not only to sell journals, but to communicate the value of the product in the broader STEM research ecosystem.

Today we are featuring a conversation with Ivy Cavendish, the Founder of TooWrite, a tool designed to help scientists write up the results of their research (recently acquired by Springer-Nature), and Eugenie Regan, Vice President Research Solutions at Springer Nature. Ivy was a PhD student in Literature when she founded TooWrite in response to the struggles of her co-founder as he was writing his dissertation in computational biology. Ivy believed that the process of science writing was much more complicated and stressful than it needed to be and she created TooWrite specifically to help scientists write up the results of their research.
The TooWrite platform transforms scientific writing into a formula; instead of being akin to drafting an essay, TooWrite allows researchers to write in short, editor-supported bursts via self-composed questionnaires. The result is a writing process that is faster, healthier, and more accessible. Eugenie Regen explains why Springer-Nature acquired TooWrite and what they hope it can do for researchers. Today we’re featuring a fascinating conversation with Elliott Lumb, Founder and CEO of PeerRef, which is described as “a journal-independent open peer review platform.” Elliott says that he had initially hoped to disrupt the traditional publishing process with PeerRef by assisting authors to post their work online as a preprint, organize and publish the peer review for their work, and to give them all the pieces they need to satisfy funders and institutions. However, Elliott realized that organizing peer review is not the primary value proposition of a publisher since they add more value to research after publication. Elliott prefers now to think of PeerRef as a single point of peer review which will provide publishers with verified preprints which editors can evaluate for their suitability for their journal and publish much more quickly. By expanding the opportunity for qualified researchers around the world to do peer review, PeerRef would also create more equity and provide more viewpoints in the peer review system.

Ijad Madisch is described in Wikipedia as “a German virologist, founder and CEO of the research network ResearchGate and member of the Digital Council of the Cabinet of Germany.” As a scientist and entrepreneur, Ijad and his partners founded ResearchGate in 2008 with a handful of members and a “clear goal: to connect the world of science.” Since then, RG has become a giant presence in the scientific community, with 24 million members and a growing relationship with the major science publishers to syndicate their published output on the RG platform.

Boaz is the University Librarian at Lehigh University. He previously worked in collection development and technical services at Brown University and Cornell University, as well as a stint with OCLC. Matthew and Boaz will discuss a new project, the Collaborative Collections Lifecycle Project, a vendor-neutral, open source, collaborative project on which Boaz has been working for years. Boaz says the mission of this new Project is to think “network first” in building and evaluating book collections at the level of the library, the consortium, and even at the national level. The CCLP would allow librarians, publishers and vendors to think strategically about book collection development, evaluation and preservation at scale and open new avenues of cooperation and rationalization of collecting activities.

Simon Holt is Disability Confidence Manager at Elsevier and he is deeply involved with the issue of accessibility in scholarly communication. In this podcast, Simon and Matthew discuss how making post-publication accommodations for disabled readers can be succeeded in the scholarly publishing world by born-accessible texts which have universal accessibility built into them. Simon talks about how different publishing formats, ranging from print text to audio, can serve the needs of all readers and widen the audience for scholarly texts. Simon seeks to transform the scholarly publishing environment to make universal accessibility both a part of the everyday publishing workflow and to make good business sense for publishers.
