It's hard for me to pick a favorite chapter in The Book of Mormon, but this one is up there.

This is the chapter in which we first encounter Gadianton, who plays an outsized role in the history of the Nephite civilization. He's like Nehor 2.0.
First-person elements appear more regularly beginning in Helaman through the rest of The Book of Mormon. They also appear in Alma, though less frequently—and less obviously. Through Mormon, Chapter 7, this commentary is from the prophet Mormon. After that, is are from his son, Moroni.

Chapters 56-58 are essentially a letter from Helaman to Captain Moroni, though they contain a few interjections by Mormon, who appears to have edited the letter.

We first meet Helaman's 2,000 stripling soldiers. The stories of these faithful young men, and their covenant-keeping families, were among my favorites growing up.

We're in the heart of what many people think of as "the war chapters" in The Book of Mormon. Not hard to see why. But woven throughout these chapters are spiritual lessons that can apply to anyone. Chapter 50 has one that I've referred to frequently. The first several verses describe Moroni's efforts to strengthen the Nephite cities. Layer upon layer of fortification are added to discourage their enemies. Just as Moroni and his people made intentional efforts to harden their cities against the Lamanites, we can do the same to protect ourselves spiritually. We read elsewhere in the scriptures about putting on the whole armor of God (Isaiah 59, Ephesians 6, D&C 27). Each piece of the armor of God (righteousness, faith, truth, etc.) can protect us from temptation, evil, and the effects of sin. From Moroni we learn that intentional preparation, adding simple layers of protection that together create an impenetrable fortress, is the path to safety.

Mosiah 2-5 comprise the final discourse of the great prophet/king Benjamin to his people, the Nephites.

Words of Mormon has only one chapter. It's an interesting bit of editorial text by the prophet Mormon, who along with his son, Moroni, was the chief compiler of The Book of Mormon. It falls between records written on the Plates of Nephi, and the records written on other plates kept by prophets and leaders of the Nephites over many hundreds of years. Notice that the writings of the Plates of Nephi are written almost entirely in first person. The books that follow, Mosiah through 4th Nephi, are written mainly in third person—aside from dialogue and quotations—with occasional editorial interjections by Mormon. The first person perspective returns in the personal writings of Mormon and Moroni. First person also appears in the Book of Ether, both from Moroni and the original keepers of the record of the Jaredites (which is the Book of Ether). That record of the Jaredites is mentioned in The Words of Mormon.

The allegory itself is from an older prophet, Zenos, but Jacob's recounting of it is what makes him my favorite of all Book of Mormon authors.

This chapter contains what I believe is a key to unlock personal revelation and communion with God through the Holy Ghost: "Angels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ. Wherefore...feast upon the words of Christ...."
Understanding this verse fundamentally changed my relationship with the scriptures, especially The Book of Mormon.

This is the last of what is considered the "Isaiah chapters" in The Book of Mormon. Chapters 25 and 26 are commentaries on the prophecies of Isaiah by the prophet Nephi, but 29 is the last time he quotes Isaiah at length.

Though the prophet Isaiah has already been quoted extensively up to this point, this is the beginning of what many people call "the Isaiah chapters." For many Book of Mormon readers, especially new ones, this section is tougher to get through. The language of Isaiah is beautiful, but he was writing for a different people in a different time in history, and some of his metaphors and language can be challenging. I have found that with time and effort, these chapters begin to open themselves up.
