Nothing can take the place of home in rearing and teaching children, and no other success can compensate for failure in the home” ( J. E. McCulloch, Home: The Savior of Civilization [1924]Rule 7: Pursue What is Meaningful (Not What is Expedient). Rule 8: Tell the Truth, or at least Don’t Lie
Jordan Peterson's book "12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos" offers a blend of practical advice, psychology, philosophy, and personal anecdotes aimed at helping individuals lead more meaningful and disciplined lives. Some of the key takeaways from the book include:
Overall, the book promotes the idea that responsibility, discipline, and meaning are essential for a fulfilling and successful life. While some readers and critics have praised the book for its insights, others have raised concerns about some of the book's content and the way it has been interpreted. It's important to approach the book with a critical mind and consider the advice within the context of your own life and circumstances.

Jason and JP talk about the four key ideas from Greg McKeown's 2014 book, Essentialism:
Do less, but do it better. The cornerstone of essentialism is the never-ending task of identifying the less important things in your life to cut out, and doing what’s left over to a higher standard.
Reject the notion that we should accomplish everything, and choose instead specific directions in which you can excel. Essentialism isn’t about making tiny progress in many directions. Instead, choose a direction and make great strides in the things that matter most to you.
Constantly question yourself and update your plans accordingly. The process of deciding what’s worth doing and what should be let go is ongoing. The essentialist is always deciding whether what she is doing is actually worth her time or if she should invest her time and energy in a more productive area.
Finally, once those few vital tasks have been distilled from the trivial many, the essentialist wastes no time in ensuring that the changes are put in place.

JP and I discuss a short story from "The Middle-aged Man on the Flying Trapeze" by James Thurber and the importance of home! We focus on "One is a Wanderer" my personal favorite of the 36 short stories contained in this book published in 1935.
I discovered this obscure book on a recent trip to NYC at the Morgan Library & Museum. https://www.themorgan.org/
It was featured in a collection of art, that moved me to order an old paperback copy. I was struck at what value Mr. Morgan placed on books and how easily accessable books are to us now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"A Collection of Short Stories, Mainly Humourous But with a Few Kind of Sad Ones Mixed in with Drawings by the Author". "The Middle-Aged Man" draws on Thurber's troubled marriage for material. The humor is ridden with pathos, and yet is quite sharp. This collection has 36 stories including: "The Gentleman is Cold," "Everything is Wild," "Mr. Preble Gets Rid of His Wife," "Hell Only Breaks Loose Once," "If Grant Had Been Drinking at Appomattox," and "How to See a Bad Play." The London Times said, "There may be greater humorists writing in America today than James Thurber, but none with quite his individual touch and his flavor."

Law of Success Part II
Self Control in dealing with Critcism
Going the Extra Mile
A Pleasing Personality
The Importance of Concentration
Habits
Cooperation between your conscious and sub-conscious mind
Fear of Failure and Fear of Poverty
Tolerance: The key message: If you follow the golden rule, you will stay on the path to success.
Think posive, move toward your goal, and don’t let social heredity
define who we are. The Media is not interested in encouraging us to use the golden rule, its not in
vogue, but it should be our biggest aspiraon if we want to be successful!
JP and I discuss some of the topics from "The Law of Success" by Napoleon Hill
show notes:
Success requires:
Use ofyour mind and gathering knowledge
Other like-minded people (master mind alliance)
Definite Chief Aim
Self-Confidence
This podcast is an example of this concept. We study and organize thoughts that we share each week. We have a mastermind alliance that works in harmony to achieve our purpose:
We talk about topics that we hope will help us think better with the benefit of getting to hang out and leaving some thoughts for our children if they ever want to go back and see what we were thinking in our late 40’s.
Our subconscious mind will believe anything we tell ourselves over and over:
To cultivate self-confidence comes down to positive self-talk
Auto-Suggestion: Commit a message to memory and tell yourself repeatedly that you can do it.
“I know I can achieve my definite purpose; therefore, I demand of myself consistent, persistent, aggressive continuous action toward this goal.
Initiative and leadership; Initiative can defeat procrastination.
Commit to doing one thing that will help you get to your chief aim.
Imagination: Creation of positive mental images. Instill confidence, positivity and picture yourself achieving you goals, to achieve them. Itmakes a difference!
A well-developed imagination and use of psychology. Observe: “Active Listening…. Reading the Room.”
Example: Consider the man, with no imagination, who was moving to the city. He knocked on the door of a farmer and said I am moving to the city, and I have no room for this dog. Can I give you my dog. The farmer said no.
Now look at the same situation with a little imagination: He knocks on the door and tells of an amazing opportunity, of a dog who can herd sheep, help chase of wild animals and help bring in the cows… there isno shortage of errands this dog can help you with and I will let him go for $100…. SOLD, said the farmer.
Its all about seeing past your needs and looking at others needs.
Let’s talk about enthusiasm: Think of times you have been around enthusiastic folks. Its about body language and how you say it. There is great power in enthusiasm, but also requires self-control. You can’t let your enthusiasm run amuck.
Control your enthusiasm…. Sometimes have to turn your dial back to one!!

We talk about Virtues, Ben Franklin's 13 virtues and the importance of having your own list of virtues that help you pursue your best life.
Franklin conceived a bold and arduous project to help us pursue moral perfection," Franklin writes. "As I knew, or thought I knew, what was right and wrong, I did not see why I might not always do the one and avoid the other." He soon found the task "of more Difficulty than I had imagined," but decided that one's bad deeds resulted from bad habits, and that with concentration one could substitute good habits for the bad ones. He decided that 13 virtues were either necessary or desirable, arranged them so that the first acquired could help in assimilating the second, and so on:
TEMPERANCE: Eat not to Dullness. Drink not to Elevation. (this one too me some time!)
SILENCE: Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself. Avoid trifling Conversation. (hard for me)
ORDER: Let all your things have their places. Let each part of your business have its time.
RESOLUTION: Resolve to perform what you ought. Perform without fail what you resolve.
FRUGALITY: Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself: i.e. Waste nothing.
INDUSTRY: Lose no Time. Be always employed in something useful. Cut off all unnecessary actions.
SINCERITY: Use no hurtful Deceit. Think innocently and justly; and, if you speak, speak accordingly.
JUSTICE: Wrong none, by doing Injuries or omitting the benefits that are your Duty.
MODERATION: Avoid Extremes.
CLEANLINESS: Tolerate no Uncleanliness in Body, Clothes, or Habitation.
TRANQUILITY: Be not disturbed at Trifles, or at Accidents common or unavoidable.
CHASTITY: Rarely use Venery but for Health or Offspring. (I take the most issue with this one)
HUMILITY: Imitate Jesus and Socrates.
