The Coughy House Podcast is a weekly podcast created to provide a 3rd party information source and discussion platform dedicated to the medical marijuana industry. Each week we will cover the latest news and happenings in the industry by interviewing a range of interesting people from different sectors of the industry. Our goal is to provide an informative discussion platform while having fun with our guests, educating our listeners, and exploring important topics relating to this South Dakota Medical Cannabis Industry.

They are a vertically integrated Cannabis Company with Cultivation, Manufacturing, and multiple Dispensaries. While in the Black Hills, I was lucky enough to visit FTH's Cultivation/Manufacturing facility, as well as, the FTH Deadwood and Lead Dispensaries.
We've sat down with a lot of people on this show but we've never had the opportunity to have a guest with 20+ years of experience in the Marijuana Industry. Todd offers a unique perspective on what it takes to be in the Marijuana Business.

In episode 8, we have our first Medical Marijuana patient and home cultivator on the podcast. Huge thank you to Hunter for being our first South Dakota Medical Marijuana Cardholder to be on the show!
Hunter takes us through his journey to get certified, the requirements he had to meet in order to home cultivate, and offers some tips that could improve the home cultivation program.
Getting CertifiedA mix of both physical clinic locations and Outreach Clinics is necessary for patients with chronic conditions to get certified. If the state wants to eliminate Outreach Clinics, they need to replace them with a telehealth option. Asking people with chronic conditions to drive several hours to get certified for their medical card is unconscionable. Especially when you take into account that the average age of cardholders is about 50 - 52 years old.
Not offering telehealth also creates a significant amount of confusion for anyone trying to find out how or where to get certified. Why? Because the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe's (FSST) Medical Marijuana Program DOES offer telehealth. The majority of South Dakotans still do not understand that the South Dakota Medical Marijuana Program and the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe's (FSST) Medical Marijuana Programs are completely separate.
You can use telehealth to get your FSST Card, you can NOT use telehealth to get your South Dakota Card.
Advice to anyone wanting a South Dakota State Card and an FSST Card - Get your South Dakota Card first then get your FSST Card. FSST allows you to use your South Dakota State Card in lieu of an additional telehealth visit with a physician to get your FSST Card.

Watchhttps://youtu.be/crBoUBDL62UListenProgram Improvements From a Patient StandpointHome CultivationCurrently, the South Dakota Medical Marijuana Program allows 2 Flowering and 2 Non-Flower Plants. As a home cultivator, Hunter would like to see an increase in the limit of Non-Flowering plants. This is due to the fact that you do not know if your seeds are going to produce a male or female plant - for those who do not know, male plants do not produce THC and can therefore not be smoked or used for any medicinal benefit. By limiting the number of non-flowering plants, there is a high likelihood that at least one plant will be male and not produce THC. That plant will then need to be destroyed and the grower will need to begin the process over, resulting in the home grower only having one flowering plant.
TestingTesting requirements vary from state to state and in a new market where state regulators are not fully educated on the best procedures, it can cause confusion on the part of the patient. Just because two strains have the same THC percentage, does NOT mean their effects are going to be the same. It all comes down to the way the terpenes and cannabinoids in that strain interact with one another, commonly called the "Entourage Effect."
South Dakota testing requirements focus solely on THC percentage which, in a Medical Market, is not the best way to determine which strain will benefit the patient the most. Terpenes are the therapeutic and medically beneficial parts of Cannabis, not the THC percentage. So it would stand to reason that in a Medical Market, Terpene testing should be part of the required testing for all Cannabis products. NOT as an "add on" test that comes with an additional cost to the Cultivators.
Packaging and LabelingCurrently, if you purchase any Cannabis product from a dispensary, the package will have the following...
- Strain Name
- Cultivator Name
- Cultivator Licence Number
- Dispensary Licence Numbe
- Batch Number/Package ID/Metric ID (They all mean the same thing)
- Weight
- THC %
- Government Warnings
- Product Warnings
Additional Packaging Requirement Suggestions1. CBD Content, if Applicable 2. Terpene Profiles 3. Cultivation Date 4. List of Ingredients - Including Sub-Ingredients, if Applicable 5. Recommended Shelf Life Date 6. Dosage Variety - Edibles Come in Packages of 100m/g. Rather than only selling edibles in packages of 10, labeled as 100m/g, why not offer a couple of options? 1. 10 - 10 m/g Gummies 2. 20 - 5m/g Gummies
Additional Edible Requirement Suggestions1. Package Contents Should Equal 100mg NOT 10 Gummies. For example, if the gummies in a package are each equal to 7.0 m/g THC, that package should include 13 gummies equaling 100mg. NOT 10 gummies equaling 70 m/g but being sold as a 100 m/g package. 2. Sam and Ruben, are truly a match made in South Dakota. Their chemistry and friendly demeanors give you the impression that they've known each other and been friends for years. But, in fact, they are from opposite sides of the country, come from totally different backgrounds, and had never met prior to moving to South Dakota. Luckily for us, both Sam and Ruben were handpicked by the ownership of Botanicals to fill the positions that they hold.
Whether through self-education or learning from mentors, both Sam and Ruben have put in years and years of hard work to acquire the growing expertise that they have. As individuals both Sam and Ruben are expert growers but together, they bring a wealth of much-needed knowledge and expertise to the industry. Their combined expertise is crucial in ensuring that the state's cannabis industry continues to thrive and evolve.

The Entourage EffectThe “entourage effect” refers to the mixture of compounds in cannabis that work together synergistically to modulate the plant’s psychoactive effects. Some suggest that the mix of compounds also improves the health benefits of various cannabinoids.
There are hundreds if not thousands of compounds in the cannabis plant. Of these, three main groups of compounds contribute towards the entourage effect. These are:
- Phytocannabinoids (plant cannabinoids) — the “feel” or “bodily effect” compounds.
- Terpenes/terpenoids — the aromatic compounds.
- Flavonoids — the flavor compounds.

TerpenesTerpenes are organic chemical compounds that naturally occur in the cannabis plant. They are found in the trichomes (tiny hairs protecting the outer layer of the plant) and give cannabis its distinctive smell and flavors. They are mostly associated with cannabis, but terpenes are found in other plants, including herbs like thyme and citrus fruits like lemons.
These organic compounds do much more than deliver a potent flavorful, aromatic experience when consuming cannabis. Research indicates that terpenes may be beneficial to treat wide-ranging health conditions, from epilepsy to malaria.

Endocannabinoid system (ECS)A system of cannabinoid receptors, lipids, and enzymes that performs a large role in maintaining homeostasis, or internal regulatory balance, in many bodily functions. All mammalian vertebrates have an endocannabinoid system, which interacts with endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids that are found in cannabis. The endocannabinoid system’s far-reaching influence is what allows cannabis to provide medicinal benefits for a large range of symptoms.

Cannabinoid ReceptorsCannabinoid receptors sit on the surface of cells and “listen” to conditions outside the cell. They transmit information about changing conditions to the inside, kick-starting the appropriate cellular response. There are two major cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2. These aren’t the only cannabinoid receptors, but they were the first ones discovered and remain the best-studied.
- CB1 receptors are one of the most abundant receptors in the brain. These are the receptors that interact with THC to enable the classic psychoactive effects of cannabis.
- CB2 receptors are more abundant outside of the nervous system, in places like the immune system. CB2 receptors are a major reason why cannabinoids, including THC and CBD, often have anti-inflammatory effects.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in our Drug Courts. If you are charged with a drug offense in South Dakota, you will have to serve out your sentence whether you complete treatment or not. In most other states, after completing treatment, your charges are dropped and your sentence is vacated.Law EnforcementThe way law enforcement approaches drug-related matters is incredibly inconsistent across the state. The difference between being arrested for possession and just having your Marijuana confiscated generally depends on the arresting officer and their mood that day. For obvious reasons, that doesn't sound like the best way to be handling those situations. Especially when those law enforcement resources could be allocated toward violent crime prevention.Adult UseUnfortunately, adult use did not pass last November. Moving forward, the industry needs to come together and become advocates for the legalization of adult use. Money Legalizing adult use and adding a MET (Marijuana Excise Tax) could generate $100M/year in tax revenue for the state of South Dakota.
