Celebrate our 10th year anniversary!

“Do not lose hope, nor be sad. You will surely be victorious if you are true in faith.”(The Qur’an 3:139)

Hope is an optimistic state of mind that is based on an expectation of positive outcomes. It is the feeling that keeps you going when all the odds are stacked against you and the ability to see light despite being surrounded by darkness. Hope is one of the most potent and powerful human emotions we feel and can at times be lost, even though it never truly disappears. It is the extraordinary strength which lies within each and every one of us, that makes us human and allows us to see, believe and dream of a future which will be more beautiful than today.

At Inspirited Minds we understand the importance of hope when it comes to our healing on an emotional, physical and spiritual level and how it can significantly improve our mental health and wellbeing. It not only reduces feelings of helplessness, boosts happiness, reduces stress and anxieties, and keeps you focused during times of adversity; it also keeps you grounded, and connected to life.

It is with this hope that we have been working tirelessly for the last 10 years to grow, improve and help the Ummah in areas that are often hidden and taboo, but that affect all of us nonetheless. We can start listing down all of our achievements, accolades and accomplishments since our inception in 2014 to now, but that would deter from our main focus – which is how many people we have helped.

Over the last 10 years, we have:
  • Supported over 2000 individuals with our counselling and support services
  • Engaged over 17,000 users online across our social media, podcast and website
  • Worked together with over 100 volunteers and team members
  • Collaborated with many organisations, charities and healthcare companies within the field of mental health
  • And helped countless others through our in-person and online outreach events

Needless to say, we could not have done any of this without our team members who passionately give to bring our mission to life, our donors and funders who have really helped us ensure that each individual who needs help has access to it, and our supporters who guide us in making sure that we are always on the right track!

**A huge JazakAllahu Khayr to all of you. We hope to continue helping and supporting those who need it for a great many more years.**

Check out our socials for 2 exciting gifts open to everyone:

WISE Wellness was formed in High Wycombe with the intention to help manage the large demand of counselling requests made by the community. This workshop was intended to introduce this group as a solution to the mental health issues presented by the community whilst also giving a taster to the types of events it would facilitate in the future.

On the 18th of November, a cloudy afternoon saw the Hive Centre filling up with passionate individuals who were eager to learn about mental health from an Islamic perspective. Meanha, our host, gave everyone a warm welcome and an introduction to the aims of the Wise Wellness project. She then introduced the attendees to the first speaker, Farhana Maleque.

Farhana spoke about Mental Health in Islam. She began by exploring the prevalence of mental health issues in the UK, the causes of poor mental health and the signs to look out for if someone is struggling. In an interactive format, she encouraged discussion around mental health in the Muslim community, the struggles we face and the forgotten history of mental health in Islam. She concluded on ways to support ourselves if we’re struggling, Duas of the Prophets’ and the profound effect of learning the names of Allah.

After a short prayer break, we moved onto our next speaker, Sanaa Hasan from the NHS. She spoke about talking therapies and the free counselling service that the NHS offers to create awareness of the many options available to the public.

The talks concluded with a short Q&A from the audience. A representative from the NIHR was also present to encourage people from BAME communities to participate in more surveys and questionnaires for the NHS to allow more representative research findings.

Wise Masjid representatives thanked all of the speakers, guests and everyone involved behind the scenes who contributed to the event. It was a great success that ended with empowering and uplifting conversations between sisters who all connected on a spiritual level. Some attendees feed-backed the following:

“I liked that she spoke about her personal experience. It added so much more depth to her presentation”

“The information all related back to core Islamic principles which was refreshing to listen to and to learn”

“I really liked her connection to the Prophet in relation to majnoon and the stigma that is attached to mental health”

If you are going through a difficult time and are experiencing anything relevant to the above mentioned topic, then feel free to contact our support service including counselling. For further information please visit: Get Help

If you would like to get involved in raising awareness about mental health in your local community, we are looking to grow our outreach team to different cities around the country. We will ensure that you are fully trained and confident before running workshops & talks.

The Islam, Mental Health + Wellbeing event for Exeter Community Charity Week was meaningful and well received. Attendees were encouraged to reflect on well known ayaat/ahadith from a different perspective, think deeply about the signs Allah tell us about in the Quran and explore what self-care means to them as Muslims in the West.

**Exeter Community Charity Week included many successful events, one of them included hosting Inspirited Minds for a talk on Islam, Mental Health and Wellbeing, with a focus on Charity Week’s theme: Nature.** The talk was then followed by an crafts activity which enabled the sisters who attended to let their creative sides flow and connect differently with the signs that Allah has provided us with.

Meanha opened the talk by inviting the attendees to think about Allah’s name Al-Waliyy, The Helping Friend, and connecting with an associated ayah. She then went on to ask what the attendees thought mental health was, and discussed why it is so important in Islam. The conversation flowed really well and engagement was high when Islamic Self-Care was discussed, particularly as Muslims in the West.

After a short break, Meanha moved onto the importance of shifting perspective and utilised ayaat about the world that Allah regards to as signs and how He uses metaphors for us to connect with on a deeper level. One ayaat that was discussed in great detail with questions to prompt conversation was:

“And He is the One Who sends down rain from the sky in perfect measure, with which We give life to a lifeless land. And so will you be brought forth from the grave.”

  • Why is Allah telling us about the rain?
  • What can we learn about lifeless land?
  • Why did Allah make the comparison of land to grave?

After this, a brief history of mental health in the Muslim world was spoken about to highlight that conversations around mental health are not new to the Muslim community and that Islam in itself is self-care. Finally, the dua for grief and stress was shared, followed by help and parting words from the Prophet (ﷺ):

“Know that there is much good in being patient with what you hate, victory will come with patience, affliction will come with relief, and hardship will come with ease” [Ahmed].

        What attendees said:
  • “I really enjoyed the interactive aspect of it, I was able to put forward my own ideas and have an open discussion about it whilst also getting advice.”
  • “Lots of clear examples of how mental health and wellbeing is important in Islam and practical solutions on how to tackle mental health issues.”
  • “I loved the fact that there was leaflets highlighting key issues. Structure was very good. Picked out ayahs of quran and gave their significance and related it back to the topic. Very warm and friendly workshop lead, so the meaning and message was put in a clear and easy to understand manner.” Highlights from this workshop:

  • Remember everything in life is a test, and when we start to see tests as challenges to overcome, or as a means to get closer to Him, or even lessons to be learnt from, it can become more manageable, more practical and solution focused.

  • Islam is a self-preserving religion – everything Allah has told us to do, is for our own benefit. Therefore, acts of Ibadah promote aafiyah! Additionally, Islamic self-care doesn’t stop at the self like western self-care promotes, we are a religion that promotes community and social responsibility. Ensure your Islamic self-care is holistic so that it looks after you and those around you.
  • We were given Prophets and Messengers, who were humans, in order to relate to them. Their experiences and stories should be accessible to us, and we should look to the lessons their lives can give us and how we can apply them to our own situations.
  • Connect with Allah in a meaningful and personal way. He has 99 names and associated attributes – which of them has most meaning to you? This can even change in different situations. Get to know Allah more.
  • “[And] who created seven heavens in layers.1 You do not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So return [your] vision [to the sky]; do you see any breaks” [Qur’an 67:3] – Look to the Quran for inspiration, awe, motivation, connection, comfort, company and so much more! The IM 7-a-side Football Tournament which was held on August 13th, 2023, at Market Road Pitches, N7 9PL, reminded me of the power of community, collaboration and compassion in addressing mental health challenges. This event was organised by Inspirited Minds (IM) and Taha Varda in order to raise awareness and funds thus enabling us to support those in need.

The tournament, which saw the participation of 7 teams, was not merely a sporting event but a meaningful platform to discuss and promote mental health awareness. The significance of this initiative is amplified by the fact that it was inspired by Taha Varda’s heartfelt intention to honour a relative’s memory – Afridi Mudas, who lost his battle with mental health – by contributing to a cause that affects so many lives. His initiative served as a driving force behind this event’s success and it highlights the potential within each individual to make a positive change within their communities.

The support received from various parties towards this cause was heartening. An anonymous donor stepped forward to cover the cost of the event space, demonstrating a commitment to fostering a supportive environment for events such as this. Additionally, the sponsorship of food by Original Biriyaniwala from Wembley added a warm and communal touch to the event, showing how businesses can play an integral role in tackling social causes. I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our sponsors.

The event drew approximately 100 attendees, including the teams, players and spectators. Their participation not only made the event successful but also signifies a collective acknowledgment of the importance of mental health awareness. By being present, they contributed to breaking down barriers surrounding mental health and promoting an environment of empathy and understanding.

The financial outcome of the event, with a total of £1,074.58 raised, highlights both the generosity of those who contributed and the shared commitment to destigmatising mental health struggles. The funds will be allocated towards providing counselling sessions, workshops and awareness campaigns emphasising the holistic approach that we take at IM in addressing mental health challenges. It is worth noting that, all monies donated will be counted as Sadaqah-Jariyaah, in memory of Afridi Mudas – may Allah accept it In sha Allah.

Being involved in the organisation process and thoroughly enjoying the day of the event, I make dua that Allah gives us the ability to turn this into an annual affair thus enabling us to continue supporting the cause. Additionally, we would like to encourage individuals/groups to get in touch with us if they may have any ideas for events they would like for us to organise or would require our assistance in order to do so.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to make dua that Allah grants success upon success and increase in the ranks of all involved in this event. I, along with everyone at IM would like to express our heartful gratitude to all parties involved on the day.

Fundraising and Grants Manager

In the lead up to Ramadan, our plan at Inspirited Minds was to engage as much as we can with our local community, local businesses and involve our team in our fundraising and awareness generating endeavours.

During Ramadan, we are reminded of the blessings in our life and begin to focus on the importance of giving to those in need. In the lead up to Ramadan, our plan at Inspirited Minds was to engage as much as we can with our local community, local businesses and involve our team in our fundraising and awareness generating endeavours.

As such, we laid out the following plans for Ramadan during the months of Rajab and Shaban.

Iftar with Inspirited Minds

On the 31st of March 2023 at the Jack Carter Pavilion in Redbridge, we gathered with 90 attendees – including families, couples and individuals – from the local community with 30 more on the waiting list. The speakers during the evening shared their knowledge, expertise and lived experiences of mental health, particularly Religious OCD. We are grateful to all our speakers who contributed with their time during this wonderful evening, Alhamdulillah.

The list of speakers and the respective topics were as follows:

    • Talat Baig (CEO) – Welcome address and vision of IM
    • Sheikh Ismail – recited Qur’an to open
    • Azmara Moulana – Professional Insight into Mental Health
    • Ahnaf Mazid – Personal Lived Experience
    • Imam Mikdad – Islam and Mental Health
    • Aftharb Mowlana – Achievements of IM to date and closing remarks Special thanks go to our sponsors, Director of Freshery UK Limited Brother Abdul Majid Al-Sakkaf and another brother who wished to remain anonymous. Our iftar partners were Brother Ali from Taj Grill, Ilford and Brother Saeed from Original Biryaniwala, Wembley. Their generosity and support were paramount in the successful implementation of this event, Alhamdulillah.

As we broke fast, we were reminded of the importance of community and the bonds that we share. Iftar is a time for coming together and supporting each other, a time to share stories and laughter, and a time to express gratitude for the blessings in our lives.

We also held the following challenges to raise funds to sustain our many projects and services, and received a total of 23 signups:

Fasted Mindful trek of Mount Snowdon

On the 9th of April 2023, we embarked on our Mindful trek of Mount Snowdon. Climbing Mount Snowdon with the group (9 of us in total) was an incredible experience. As we made our way up the mountain, we encouraged each other and provided mental and moral support when needed. The climb was challenging, but the sense of accomplishment we felt at the summit was all the more rewarding because we had achieved it together, Alhamdulillah.

As we climbed, we shared stories, hadiths and laughter, and we were in awe of the stunning scenery around us. We marvelled at the sight of the rolling hills and the sparkling lakes, and we felt a sense of connection to the natural world. At times, when the climb was difficult, we reminded ourselves of the objective, the reason and the purpose behind our trek, this along with the encouragement of our group kept us going.

Reaching the summit of Mount Snowdon was a moment of triumph for us all, and we felt a sense of pride in what we had accomplished together. Being able to pray in congregation at the summit prior to our descent while overlooking breathtaking views was quite powerful and emotional. When we met up with our friends and family, who supported, encouraged and motivated us throughout, upon our return at the base of the mountain, we felt a sense of accomplishment.

Based on the level of participation, engagement and feedback we subsequently received, we intend to make “Snowdon” an annual challenge and would encourage as many individuals to join us in the future, In Shaa Allah.

Fasted Fitness Challenge at Regent’s Park

Our final event/gathering for the month of Ramadan was held during the following weekend, on the 15th of April, where we held a Fitness walk/cycle/jog Challenge at Regent’s Park, London. Members who had signed up concluded their challenge at their own pace and met up at the London Central Mosque for iftar.

30 Days of Kindness, 30-Day Detox, Sunnah Suhoor

For those of our supporters who could not join us in person, we set up remote challenges that could easily be completed from the comfort of your home. These included practicing an act of kindness a day, detoxing from an unhealthy habit or food item or having only dates and milk for suhoor as per the Sunnah.

Overall, it was heartening to observe the level of excitement and support that shone through from within the team from the beginning of the year. Additionally, the level of togetherness and cohesion within Inspirited Minds with the support of our torchbearers and donors motivates us to continue working harder towards our cause.

The success of the series of events are not to be measured only in terms of the funds raised, but also by the level of engagement and awareness we were able to generate. For example, the number of unique/new donors, the number of attendees that participated as well as the interest expressed by local mosques to hold Khutbah’s (lectures) and Jummah (Friday) prayers with the theme of mental health as they identify this to be a major issue within our local community.

Finally, we thank Allah (SWT) for allowing and enabling us to carry out all these activities. We thank everyone who supported throughout this blessed month. We endeavour to learn from our many lessons and experiences that we have learnt along the way. May Allah (SWT) shower His blessings upon us and grant us success upon success, Ameen.

This workshop was requested by Accenture for their Muslim staff, to deliver an introductory overview of mental health issues, how to support themselves and others, how to manage difficult people in the workplace, and deal with common workplace issues e.g. imposter syndrome.

Accenture were great hosts and well organised, mashaAllah, with the majority of the attendees in person and a handful attending virtually. We were able to get started straight away upon arrival, beginning with talking about general mental health and mental health in the workplace, followed by common taboos and stigma around mental health in the Muslim community and what to do when you are struggling. We also touched upon common workplace issues, such as Imposter Syndrome, and how to manage and respond to difficult people.

“The training has improved my knowledge of the topic and it was really engaging. It was really good Allahummabarik” – Attendee

Feedback was given to us face to face, all of which were positive and forthcoming. Lots of attendees spoke to us after the session and some even spoke about their own mental health struggles. They found it beneficial that we have Bangladeshi therapists who could understand and relate to the struggles they faced in the community and as professionals.

“I wanted to personally say a big thank you for coming into Accenture yesterday and delivering your workshop, it went amazing! As a fellow Bangladeshi, seeing both of yourselves deliver this workshop whilst being Bangladeshi women was something I was personally touched by. I honestly can’t thank you enough and it’s not easy to talk about mental health to such a big room of young Muslims so I am truly grateful.” – Attendee

The entire experience was amazing, mashAllah, and it felt like we could have gone on for longer than an hour as the audience wanted to continue engaging with us.

“I really liked the energy and provoking discussion, 1 hour wasn’t enough!” -Attendee

We are very grateful to all the attendees for their attention and contribution, as well as everybody involved in the organisation of this workshop. We look forward to holding a more in depth workshop in the future In Shaa Allah!

”Aysha for your first workshop you smashed it and I appreciated all of your anecdotes from your counselling experience. Farhana I really enjoyed how you addressed certain questions with multiple perspectives. The feedback I got from the community was insightful. People really responded and it took them back to some deep times in their live.” – Attendee

Another year gone by in a blink of an eye, SubhanAllah!

Reflecting on the year gone by has highlighted just how much of our efforts we can often overlook. At Inspirited Minds, with your help and the help of Allah, we have managed to accomplish so much.

What we gained in 2022:

  • Our counselling service received more than 250 referrals and conducted over 900 sessions in 2022! (Watch a short video)
  • We conducted 8, 2 part webinars on topics like Domestic Abuse and Violence, Addictions and Jinn Possession and Mental Health with the aim of improving mental health and wellbeing for Muslim communities. These were received well by the community and engaged with positively, mashAllah.
  • In addition to the webinars, we received a total of 24 workshop requests from Mosques, community centres and schools to host independent trainings and workshops! You can send your request in here!
  • We had a combined number of over 500 attendees for all of our outreach activities this year, with all attendees providing us a rating of 8 or above on a scale of 10. More than 80% also said that it had improved their perception of mental health and would recommend the training to their friends and family. Additional comments included the request for more discussion times, more topic ideas, and more case studies: All of which point in the right direction that conversations are being created and mental health is becoming a priority for our community!
  • We launched an online shop to provide easy access to our resources which has sold more than 200 of our booklets in 2022. In addition to our self-care booklets we also released 2 reflective faith-based planners:
    • A Ramadan Planner – which sold out in the first week of Ramadan
    • A Daily Companion – which you can still get for yourself here
      • Through your support this Ramadan, we were able to fund 54 webinar sessions, 16 mindful boxes and raise £200 towards making our resources more accessible through our 5k/10k fasted walk challenges, which had a total of 15 participants!
  • We successfully released 11 episodes of The Mindful Muslim Podcast and obtained 8000+ views across all our platforms. This year we spoke to many inspiring guests across the board, including Zahra Aljabri and James Faghmous who spoke about love and abundance through Islam, Faisal Hussain who explored his journey with ADHD, Layinka Sanni who talked about self-transformation as a Muslim, and Soumaya Ettouji who delved into her healing journey.
  • We collaborated with Papyrus UK, releasing a 2-part podcast and featuring on their #ToMyFellow campaign for #WorldMentalHealthDay2022 in prioritising suicide awareness and support for all. This feature actually resulted in our highest viewed reel of all time! * We conducted our first post-pandemic, in-person, SOLD-OUT event called Normal-ish to normalise conversations around mental health. We connected with inspiring growth stories from Warisa Hussain, Adam Afgham, Faisal Hussain and Annotate. Read our review here and watch the highlights here.
  • Thanks to our humble torchbearers, generous donors and supporters, in 2022 we raised a total of £26,255! What to look forward to in 2023:

  • ROCD theme in 2023: In an effort to make our work more collaborative and towards a unified goal, we decided to conduct research into the growing areas of concern within our collective communities. We are excited to tackle Religious OCD in 2023 alongside our usual projects and services. A huge JazakAllah Khayr to everyone who attended our consultations in November on this for your ideas, opinions and feedback. We can’t wait to work on this area, and look forward to your continued support! * New Booklets: Our writers team is currently working on several new booklets, including one on ROCD!

  • Distribution of our resources: As we have built up a good library of resources, we want to ensure we are reaching those in need wherever they may be, which is why we intend to distribute our resources to a number of different community settings or hard to reach Muslims. If you are interested in stocking our resources, or know where can we distribute them to, please reach out to us at communications@inspiritedminds.org.uk
  • New Series of Workshops: Our outreach team is currently working on not-to-be-missed webinar and workshop series with returning topics like Domestic Abuse and ROCD but also new and highly requested ones such as Trauma, Divorce, Bereavement and much more!
  • Imams and Community Leader Training: Due to the pandemic and competing priorities, we paused our highly requested Imams and Community Leader training. Alhamdulillah, we are now in the process of evolving and developing the content, and In Shaa Allah aim to be ready to deliver the training once again in London and Birmingham by August 2023!
  • New Support Groups: When we asked the community how we can cater to their needs, support groups came up over and over again. After much development and refining to ensure we are providing the best possible service, we are finally in a position to launch our Support Groups which will be on a range of different topics, online and in-person throughout the year, with the first starting in February. Keep your eyes peeled for the dates and more information to be released!
  • Exciting Podcast Episodes: We have an amazing line-up of guest speakers that we cannot wait to share with you.
  • And so much more!

From our team to you, we would like to thank you for all your continued support during this difficult year. InshaAllah, the Almighty blesses this new year with compassion, Shifaa (healing) and Rahma (Mercy) in all your endeavours, Ameen!

The intention was to deliver a webinar with more understanding around the importance of self care and wellbeing with practical steps on how to look after ones wellbeing holistically, aimed specifically for Muslim women who are supported by the organisation. The webinar was very interactive and reflective.

The session began with exploring factors that impact our mental health and addressing the issues with mental health and stigma in the Muslim community. One attendee agreed and shared her personal experience of facing social exclusion and judgement from family and those around her because of her mental health. This further led to more discussions around this topic

We then moved on to discussing the importance of holistically looking after ones wellbeing, by providing examples and paying attention to one’s biological, social, psychological and spiritual wellbeing. As these components are interconnected, if one is neglected then this impacts our overall wellbeing.

We then presented the 5 steps to wellbeing (connect, be active, notice, learn and give) with examples and practical steps on how to implement this in our daily life. Attendees were encouraged to share how they can implement these 5 steps to wellbeing in their life. People shared they have been inspired to engage in more exercise and be active and to carry on learning and finding ways to connect more.

After this, we moved on to looking at Mindfulness in Islam, including defining concepts like Murakabah, Tafakkur and Taddabur. This section focused on demonstrating how Muslims are encourage to exercise mindfulness in our daily life through daily supplications and prayer. The importance of responding instead of reacting in a stressful situation was also emphasised using ahadith.

The webinar ended by emphasising the importance on strengthening our relationship with Allah (SWT) especially through his names and attributes. Attendees were given information about the #99withim campaign and other resources produced by Inspirited Minds that they can use.

The session was overall very empowering and engaging. Due to it being a small group, attendees were encouraged to share their opinions and experiences. One attendee gave feedback stating she found the session really useful and inspiring; She said it motivated her to think about her self-care in a different light, especially with exercise and staying active. Another attendee expressed the session was very interesting and being from a Christian faith it was interesting to see the similarities between the beliefs as well as learn some new things.

Top tips for Managing Mental Wellbeing:

  • Give mental wellbeing a priority by taking some time every week to reflect on whether your overall wellbeing was positive and negative, and possible reasons as to why this could be the case
  • Remember to connect to people around you at least 2-3 times a week because it is a part of human nature to be social and feel connected
  • Re-charge your wellbeing by being active as that releases healthy hormones and endorphins that can lift your mood and make you feel better
  • Take every challenge and test as a learning opportunity that Allah (SWT) is offering, and see it as a chance to grow and improve
  • Giving doesn’t have to be monetary, you can offer to others something as simple as a smile to something as valuable as your talents If you are going through a difficult time and are experiencing anything relevant to the above mentioned topic, then feel free to contact our support service including counselling.
