Kate Lord Brown, a former Petersfield resident's, latest novel, The Silver Thread is a tale of three cities and two women, spanning 100 years.

An unforgettable love story set in London, Paris and Tokyo, exploring the meeting of Eastern and Western cultures.

Noni Needs discovers when Kate Lord Brown first ate Japanese food, learnt to cook the cuisine during lockdown and how one character, Mira, deals with her experience of trying Japanese food for the first time.

Kate Lord Brown said: "The Silver Thread is a light connection between people, places and time. People and places that you love are never really lost to you."

The novel's dual timeline explores culture, fashion and art.

The story unfolds as a buying trip to Japan in the late 1800's by two employees from Liberty's in London begins their journey of enduring love.

The life long love story is uncovered by Mira, a curator from London who is tasked in 1975 with cataloging the treasures and discovering the secrets of an apartment in Paris left empty for decades.

Available in hardback, the book is out in paperback on July 31.

Iva Repnytska, offered to share her Ukrainian recipe for borscht with Shine Radio's Recipe queen Noni Needs.

Iva said: "My borscht is loved by my British friends and my future British husband. Want to try it?" So Noni went along to her home to meet her and taste borscht cooked to a traditional family recipe.

Borscht is a Ukrainian soup made from chopped beets, cabbage, potatoes, and other vegetables, and is a symbol of Ukrainian cuisine and culture.

As a symbol of culture, borscht is not just a dish, but part of Ukrainian traditions, a symbol of abundance and hospitality, said Iva Repnytska.

It has dozens of variations, including the most popular red borscht, green, and cold versions.

In 2022, the culture of Ukrainian borscht was inscribed on UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

"Food is how some people show love," said author Kate Lord Brown when talking about her latest novel The Golden Hour.

This Shine Radio Recipe podcast is an excuse to share the work of a former Petersfield resident and writer on how her passion for food are woven through the pages of her work. One of the character's Raif, shows love through his cooking by providing food, service and loyalty to the ones he loves.

Kate shares one of her favourite lebanese' recipe's, Baba ganoush, a dip that consists of finely chopped roasted aubergine, olive oil, lemon juice, various seasonings, and tahini with Noni Needs.

The novel set in Cairo and Beirut on dual timelines follows the story of archaeologist Lucie Fitzgerald as she goes home to be by her dying mother's side. He mother Polly has one last story to tell her daughter about her close female friendship with her godmother Juno.

A book full of forbidden passion, romance, love, secrets and lies that embraces all the senses with a backdrop of faraway shores.

As archaeologists both Polly and Juno share an obsession to find the Egyption tomb of the Warrior Queen - Nefertiti.

Nadia Arab's The Road From Karachi is a family cookbook that originated in the 1980s was lost, found and published now, 30 years later.

Nadia Arab, from Portsmouth, Hampshire talks to Noni Need about how family set up a cookery school in Buckland, Portsmouth in 1984, created the Indian Cookery Made Easy cookbook which was available to students and in WH Smith.

Nadia’s mother, Khalida misplaced her copy and the book was lost for decades until Nadia happened to discover an original copy.

It is a recipe book that celebrates the fusion of flavours from India and Pakistan.

Nadia worked with her mother to take the classic recipes and recreate the cookbook, which is now available in bookstores including Waterstones and Amazon.

Together with the new book, Nadia and her family have brought the recipes back to life and into the community and installed clean water pumps for those in need in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka with the proceeds.

Recipes from the book are now being used in several city pubs and restaurants, including the Dolphin and Shepherd's Crook. It is also part of the curriculum in Food Tech classes at Purbrook Park School.

Nadia is hoping that the event will raise enough money to fund 10 water pumps, which cost £150 each.

As a Petersfield nutritionist, Becky Taee loves to cook.

Her dish of the moment is roast lamb shoulder that cooks so slowly as to look like succulent pulled lamb with green olives.

I was particularly excited when I was invited to Petersfield for a late Sunday lunch with a sculpture friend and her husband to celebrate and lamb was the chosen dish.

Two things Becky said, 'eat carbs' and make sure you have enough 'fibre.'

A Liss resident, Noni Needs, has won the prestigious Bob Norris journalism award. She has graduated from a seven month course in Journalism at City of Portsmouth College. 

Noni talks to Kate Fairweather about the course, starting a new career and life as a mature student.

One of her first assignments was to interview Penny Mordaunt, Portsmouth North MP and Leader of the House of Commons. She has also sourced and written articles for The Portsmouth News and the Petersfield Post. 

As a single parent, Noni was able to support herself through the course thanks to a bursary from the National NCTJ Journalism Diversity Fund. 

Noni is an award-winning podcaster. Her podcast, Recipe with Noni Needs was recognised with an award at the Community Radio Awards 2022.

This weeks Shine recipe is from the Hangers in Liss. The vegetables are locally grown from Selina's veg patch.

Both a talented gardener and chef to boot. Selina Russell talks to Noni Needs about the joy of the humble squash and experimenting with a recipe to get an extraordinary soup.

What you'll need:

I.5 Kg Squash – deseeded, rubbed with oil in a baking tray

I bulb Garlic, wrapped in foil and placed in with the squash

Roast for 30-45 mins at 180 C until soft, then pull off the squash skin and roughly chop, and squeeze the pulp out of the garlic.

2 Chopped onions, fry until soft in a large casserole then add the squash, garlic and all of the following

2 tbsp grated fresh Ginger

3 large Carrots, chopped

2 Chillies, chopped

2tbsp Fish Sauce or Mushroom Soy Sauce

2-3 tbsp Palm or Brown Sugar

1.5L Chicken or Vegetable Stock

Bring to the boil and simmer for 45 minutes, allow to cool, then liquidise before adding the following to taste.

2-5 tbsp Thai Red Curry Paste

1-2 cans Coconut Milk

0.5-1 juice plus rind of Lime

Sprinkles

A red swirl of Sriracha Sauce then to one side of the dish (so you can still see half the swirl)

Finely chopped Spring Onion or Fried Onions

Chopped Peanuts (dry toasted in a frying pan)

Chopped Coriander

Then get your friends round the table to tuck in. Great served with a Naan or Flat Bread to mop up all the juices.

At a friends birthday supper in February Noni Needs saw the huge jars of pickles on display at The Pig in The South Downs and had to investigate.

She went back to find Mr Pickle himself. Really, they call him Mr Pickle. What a find.
