The Respectful Prostituteis a short and powerful play that reflects a frightening image back to us, the readers, forcing questions about our own willful blindness to others' pain.
I talk about the play, about the hypocrisy of "virtue signaling" and of blaming the world's problems on the powerful--which absolves us of personal responsibility--and show a different way forward: to start with anger towards others when I see a problem, but to try to shift that towards something more honest and useful -- a change in my own behavior.

I choose to honor the path he took, and to be grateful for the immense strength it took for him to "escape from the world's dream of him" and become the bard of his own life. I got to know that bard in his last years, and what I saw was lovely. If the world could be rewound and events re-done, he wouldn't be him and I wouldn't be me, and my daughters wouldn't have a dad as prepared to deal with how history seems to repeat itself.

I didn't expect to like reading these plays, but WOW I really enjoyed Sartre's writing.
I talk about "Hell is other people," identity, lying to ourselves, excessive guilt and shame, and the "gods" we create (both religious and secular) which can hurt us.
