In today's episode, we'll be discussing the challenges working mothers face when it comes to discrimination and bias in the workplace, what these biases can look like and five strategies to help you navigate these challenges.

  1. Discrimination and bias can be overt or subtle.

  2. Working mothers are stereotyped as not being as committed to their careers as their childless counterparts.

  3. One of the strongest biases women face, whether they have children or not is called the Maternal Wall Bias.

  4. The expectation to always be available is another challenge for working mothers which is not reasonable.

Quick Win Takeaways:

¨ Open and honest communication with your employer lets them know that you're still committed to your job

¨ Don't go it alone, build a support network with other working mothers or a professional organization for working mothers.

¨ There are federal laws that protect you as a working mother from discrimination and bias

¨ If you've been a victim of discrimination and bias as a working mother, report it to human resources or your supervisor

¨ Seek mentorship and sponsorship from senior leaders in your company

Episode Highlights:

[1:03]: Bias can lead to working mothers being passed over for a promotion or being given less challenging assignments.

[1:10]: Gender bias leads to people making biased assumptions that disadvantage us as women in the workplace.

[2:08]: One of the strongest biases women face, and this is women with or without children, is one called the maternal wall bias. Motherhood itself just triggers this assumption that women are less confident and less committed to their careers.

[2:58]: Indicators of how this maternal wall actually shows up in the workplace. When a mother works outside of the office, people tend to just assume that they're hanging out at home with their children.

[3:50]: As a mother, you might not be offered a very challenging assignment or a promotion because the manager's going to assume that either you don't have enough time or maybe you can't handle it because you have children.

[7:28]: As a working mother, it's very, very important to let your manager know that you're still committed to your job, but that you also need flexibility in order to manage your responsibilities as a parent.

[10:50]: Having the support network is so helpful because it provides a lot of valuable resources to you, and it's good to have a sounding board. It's good to realize that you're going through this personal struggle, but you are not alone.

[14:06]: Know that you cannot be discriminated against when it comes to hiring or even if you're already a full-time employee, if you are pregnant and there are laws to protect us.

[14:07]: Document any instances of discrimination or bias. Make sure to keep track of any specific incidents or the dates and any witnesses so that you can actually provide concrete evidence if it's necessary.

[14:30]: Seek mentorship and sponsorship from senior leaders in your company. If you have a advocate at a higher level in the organization, it really can help to promote your work and it can open doors to new opportunities

Happy New Year! In this episode I’ll share 5 time management strategies for working moms.

  1. Pick Team A.M. or Team P.M. (morning or night person)
  2. Eisenhower Method to prioritize activities
  3. Use a paper or digital planner
  4. Move forward a task daily
  5. Streamline your busy work

Quick Win Takeaways:

  1. Strategize self-care based on the time of day that works best for you.
  2. Sorting and scheduling tasks makes prioritizing their importance much easier.
  3. Moving tasks forward doesn’t always mean you have to do it.
  4. Streamlining busy work prepares you for the unexpected and gives you a clean slate to start the next day.

Episode Highlights:

[1:03]: When is your energy higher in the mornings or at nights? That's the time period where you need to try to grab some time just for you.

[1:57]: Don't try to be on the two teams. Don't try to be team A.M. and team P.M. because you’ll burnout.

[4:23]: First task is urgent and important. The most important things and you're the only person that can do it. Number two is your urgent but not important tasks. So those are things where you can delegate what needs to get done.

[5:16]: Box number three is the tasks that are important to you, but they're not urgent. Such as scheduling yearly physical exams. Last box number four is the less important task and not urgent. Tasks like going through your inbox and deleting emails.

[6:59]: The more you can manage your time, the more you have control over your life. Decide if you are a person that likes to plan on paper or analog or are you more of a digital/ electronic type of person.

[10:26]: Have a move forward task every day and focus yourself on getting those tasks done. The way that you do it is even if you have 15 minutes, you can think to yourself, what can I do in 15 minutes that will move me the most?

[12:05]: Streamlining your busy work helps you be prepared just in case something goes wrong. Using a dishwasher, preparing frozen meals as time-savers gives you back hours of your week.

[14:32]: Give yourself Grace. It's okay if you didn't get every single thing done in your urgent and very important list, you'll get it done tomorrow. Do the best that you can and just remember that you're in charge of your life.

For all my busy working moms, take the opportunity of a brand new year to get control back over your life.

[3:48]: self-care is all about doing things that make you feel good and helps you to recharge.

[4:48]: when you take time to reflect, it's going to help you gain some perspective and put things into perspective (so you can see how much you’ve really accomplished in a year!)

[5:37]: don’t be afraid to reach out for support, because none of us were made to live this life alone.

[8:14]: remember to take care of yourself.

Boosting your Mom-fidence as a Mature Mom

As a mature mom, confidence is one of the most outstanding qualities you must possess. Mom-fidence (or Mom Confidence) is when you, as a woman and a mother, after age 35, begin to feel sure of yourself and your ability to care for and raise your child through the challenges and setbacks of life as well as the opinions of others.

I would love for you to appreciate the fact that if you have your baby after the age of 35, you bring a lot to the table. You likely have a job, your degree, and a lot of wisdom you have gathered over the years. You are not where you used to be at 20.

Confidence comes from experience: do you remember when you were learning how to drive? How was it? The fact is you get better with time. The same thing applies to motherhood. There is no manual on how to do it, so you must learn on the job. Remember that you have unique abilities that make you the best mom to your kids.

Are you struggling with mom-fidence? Today’s episode is for you. I share two tips that will help you boost your confidence.

· You need to learn how to tune out the other voices effectively. Regardless of your stage as a mom; you must learn how to filter the different voices that come to you. People have a way of pouring out their wisdom to you, and it is upon you to know what to keep and what to trash. Differentiate between valuable and useless voices.

· Keep away from comparison and competition. Motherhood is not a competition, and it’s not a one-size fit. When you compare yourself to another mom, you may look at her and think she's doing an excellent job. So, you see her as an excellent mom and compare yourself and begin to think you're average or bad.

Key Talking Points of the Episode:

[01:02] What is Mom-fidence?

[01:49] As a mature mom, you bring a lot to the table

[03:05] We have unique abilities

[04:11] Learn how to differentiate voices

[09:22] In motherhood, there is no competition

Inspirational Quotes from the Episode:

“There's no way that at 35, you're the same person you were when you were at 20. So, imagine all of this you have to give to your child.”

“Comparison is the thief of joy.”

“Once you start looking around, you get distracted, and that's where comparison steals your joy and confidence.”

Living in a New Time Zone as a Mature Mom

What time zone are you in?

Do you ever find yourself in a situation where you have to join an online meeting, and you keep missing the time conversions? Relax, it happens!

Today I want us to talk about living in a new time zone as a mature mom. I know you must wonder, “what do you mean, Donna?” As a mature mom, I have episodes that I’m unable to adjust to things happening around me, especially when it comes to my daughter. I have realized the more I take up more commitments, the less time I spend with my daughter which isn’t what I desire.

We need to appreciate the fact that life is a pie; the more you slice, the more energy you require to attend to all the slices. We keep adding things to our plates and fail to realize the effect it has on our time. It shrinks our time leaving us with limited time for our precious gifts.

What’s your current role? I know some of us are in managerial roles, and they come with a fair share of responsibilities that make us work longer. We mature moms need to be strategic in every role we take up. Make sure it doesn’t make you feel like caring for your child is such a difficult task, and if it gets there, it is a clear indication that you are not in the right time zone. You need to get another role that works with your current time zone.

Listen in to learn more.

Key Talking Points of the Episode:

[01:30] Understanding your time zone as a mom

[04:39] Our commitments need to shift

[05:37] Your life is a pie don’t slice it too thin

[07:43] The importance of being strategic in every role you have

[13:54] You are raising a champion

Inspirational Quotes from the Episode:

“I want you to understand that you are having limited time during the week as an older mom, it does not make you inadequate, and it definitely does not make you antisocial.”

“One thing I’ve learned is that the more you add to your life, the more you divide your life.”

“Frustration happens because we start feeling upset or annoyed that we’re not able to achieve something.”

“Remember, your life is a pie, and you don’t want to slice it too thin.”

“The clock never worries about what time it is, it just tells us what time it is. And we move according to the time of day or the time of night. I want you to move according to the time of your life.”

How often do you say the B word?

Before you all get confused, I am not talking about anything vulgar. The “B word” in this conversation is boundaries.I know just how difficult it is for mature moms to say “no” to things. Unfortunately, commitments have consequences. When you say yes to a commitment, it goes without saying it takes away time with your child.

Not setting boundaries when I should have is among the things I’m not proud of today. I wasn’t there for my daughter as much as I’d have loved to. I had so many commitments during and after my pregnancy that I missed some things in my daughter’s life. For instance, we never had a bedtime routine.

Ladies, we need to understand that life is seasonal. Sometimes we have summer, and other times we have fall. I was looking at my garden, and I realized that some plants have deep roots. I may not see the flowers now, but it’s just a matter of time and season before I get a beautiful blossom, and as much as I want to have the blossom sooner, I cannot. I must wait for the season to come. Equally, we cannot keep lingering in a past season. We need to know when a ship has sailed. We need to learn when and where to draw the line.

  1. If you need time off social media, go for it.

  2. If you need time alone, do not hesitate to have your phone on voicemail.

  3. If your current environment is toxic, move to another environment by all means.

Boundaries add to life! The sooner we have them, the better it is for us. In this episode, I share the challenges we encounter as mature moms when setting boundaries, how to set them, and why it is essential to set them. Also, I will share some amazing posts I saw on social media this week.

Listen to hear more.

Key Talking Points of the Episode:

[06:14] Why do you need to say the B-word

[12:12] The importance of setting boundaries

[17:22] Why do I say life is seasonal?

[21:57] How to start creating boundaries

Inspirational Quotes from the Episode:

“When we talk about boundaries, I’m talking about a limit of your sphere of activity.”

“Boundaries will add to your life, when you think of that word, add the opposite of add or subtract. If you don’t have a limit to what you are active in, then you’re going to subtract. You’re going to withdraw yourself from the one thing that you waited for, for so long.”

“I learned from my garden that there are roots that are so deep in right now and even though I don’t see the flowers, it doesn’t mean that the plant is not still there. As soon as the weather shifts in another couple of months, I’m going to have beautiful flowers and Calla lilies and all types of beautiful plants that are just going to spring back up.”

“Watch your commitments because they have consequences.”

“Whatever you spend the most time around has the greatest impact on your mindset, which is why boundaries are so very important.”

Your Mindset Matters as A Mom

Are you a professional woman who became a mother after age of 35? This podcast is for you! The Mature Mom Pivot Podcast was created for professional women who have become mothers after the age of 35. Each week we'll talk about navigating life as a mom after 35. After becoming a mom at 42, I developed a strong desire to support and empower other professional women over 35 on the mature motherhood journey. Any "route" is easier if you have a working navigation system. Ladies, I’m walking in your shoes, and I want you to know you are not alone. You don't have to try to survive; you can thrive, and you can establish balance to build a unique bond with your child! In today’s episode, we’ll talk about “Mature Mom Mindset Matters.”

Have you ever been in a situation that halted your thinking and sent you into a state of anxiety? We had our 19th wedding anniversary on May 31st this year. On June 2nd, my husband suffered a mini stroke. My ship sank for a minute. In 2021 I lost my mother to a bleeding stroke. I was seeing my husband going through what my mom went through. Anxiety crept in, and my life came to an abrupt halt. I only did the things I had to do, like virtual trainings and anything assigned to me at work. Everything else in my life reached a standstill, and I slowly lost myself. Trauma had crippled me, and I could hardly sleep through the night without waking up to check if my husband was breathing. One day, a friend said, “it is okay to feel what you are feeling, and he will be okay.” That statement pulled me out of the dark patch I was in for some reason.

In this episode, I share the essence of having the right mindset. From my experience with my husband’s stroke, I learned the importance of having the right mindset. I know sometimes life surprises us, which can easily mess up our mindset.

We can learn how to give ourselves the grace to move past the experiences. One of the best ways to give ourselves grace is by using affirmations/declarations such as: • I give myself grace; I’ll consider what I need. And do one thing I enjoy • I’ll be thoughtful about myself so that I can be at my best for myself, and my child • I am doing an amazing job raising my child and perfection isn’t real or required • I give myself grace because I deserve it. And I’m worthy of being loved and respected. Listen as I share more tips on nurturing the right mindset as a mature mom. Also, I will share an amazing lesson I learned from a friend when I was expecting my daughter.

Key Talking Points of the Episode: [01:15] Mindset matters? [02:04] My husband’s mini-stroke and how it affected me [05:34] How anxiety affects our minds [06:58]We need to give ourselves grace [08:40] Declarations to help you give yourself some grace [10:36] Strategies to help you better your mindset Inspirational Quotes from the Episode: “Anxiety about life events can be crippling, and it can contribute to developing a very negative self-image.” “Setbacks can sometimes knock out your confidence. If your confidence kind of ebbs away, you start feeling those feelings of self-loathing, they can creep in, and you start feeling like you have the word loser tattooed across your forehead.” “Neglecting us, is never going to work out for our good.” “I felt like there was no way to move forward. I put myself on hold and by doing that, I damaged myself.” “If you’re confident you’re going to think positively. A confident person is optimistic.” “Always look at your small victories because none of us are as bad as we think we are sometimes.”

What Does Your Mom Mirror Image Look Like?

What do you see when you look at yourself in the mirror? Do you see just how flawed you are? I know having babies changes our bodies in ways we might not like. It’s easy to look in the mirror and hate what we see. The truth is we are more than what we see in the mirror.

Today I share two simple steps to help you change your mirror image to the one you will love. Before I get to the simple tips, I want to share a song that inspires me. It’s called Priceless by for King and Country. It reminds me that I am irreplaceable, unmistakable, incomparable, and beautiful. If there is one thing I want you to take away from this episode is you are more than what you see in the mirror. You brought a whole miracle to this world.

My tip number one is always to step out feeling comfortable: When you are comfortable with what you are wearing, it makes you feel good, and your mom mirror image is enhanced. I know sometimes we don’t have the energy to dress up, especially after a new baby, but all you need to do is be comfortable. It could be as simple as a pair of jeans and a t-shirt.

Tip number two, do your hair: Nothing boosts a woman’s confidence like a nice hairdo. My baby came premature. I had plans to get my hair braided before the baby came, but that never happened because when I went for my check up, I got admitted immediately. My hair was a hot mess while at the hospital. My sister came from another state and did some cornrows for me, but I wasn’t comfortable with the look.

When I got home, I couldn’t stomach the person I saw in the mirror. One day, I called a close friend to drive me to a salon to do my hair. When she got to my place, she thought I was in no condition to get my hair done. I insisted for the sake of my sanity. I got it done, and I can tell you, it was the magic I needed!

Listen to hear more.

Key Talking Points of the episode:

[03:56] You are more than what the mirror shows

[05:20] Steps to make you feel comfortable with your mirror mom image

[08:46] Getting your hair done: My story about getting my hair braided after my premature daughter was born.

Inspirational Quotes from the Episode:

“Sometimes, when you look in the mirror, what you see is not a real reflection of who you are at the moment.”

“Appearance is like an unspoken resume. It’s like that lasting first impression that does not allow a do-over. But mom, listen, you have to leave people looking. You must step out every day making sure you feel good about yourself.”

“What’s seen on the outside, a lot of times, it’s a clue about what lies within.”

“What you wear will affect how you feel and can boost or reduce your confidence level.”

“We are unstoppable when we’re confident.”
