Folks,

Our message this week is tough to hear but important to understand, and I feel that we cannot not bury our heads in the sand on this matter.

The COVID “vaccines” are detrimental and dangerous to pregnant women and their babies, and to female and male fertility in general.

I repeat: They are damaging and killing babies, and they are damaging people’s ability to conceive.

It is my privilege to host the courageous, outspoken OB-GYN whistleblower, Dr. Kimberly Biss, for an extended conversation on this matter. I first heard of her at FLCCC 1, and then we met and had a lovely conversation at FLCCC 3 in Pheonix, leading to this podcast.

Join us as she shares her OB-GYN expertise and first-hand observations of the effects of these injections. And thank you, Dr. Biss, for speaking out.

  • After vaccine rollout, Dr. Biss saw her monthly miscarriage rates rise from 4% to 8% and then peak at 30%.
  • Federal government V-safe data revealed an alarming 83% overall miscarriage rate.
  • Possible reasons:

    • 1) Direct lipid nanoparticle or spike protein movement across the placenta, triggering an inflammatory response
    • 2) mRNA transmission across the placenta, triggering spike protein production within the fetus.
    • 3) Spike protein in the mother being structurally similar to embryonic proteins; thus, as the mother creates antibodies to spike protein antibodies, these same antibodies “inadvertently” react and destroy her embryo.
    • Recap of the Naomi Wolff findings from the post-marketing Pfizer data (that they wanted to hide for 75 years!) —fetal deaths, blue and green breastmilk, rashes on the baby (read more here and here)
    • Why has the OB-GYN community been largely silent?

    • ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) accepted $11 million from Health and Human Services to promote the vaccine (watch interview here)

    • “Evidence-based medicine” emphasis promotes adherence to protocols above critical thinking.

Excited to kick-off a new series: “Overcomers”.

You know, we all have stories of going through hardships and challenges, and some more than others.

As we reflect back on the most difficult challenges of our lives, and how we overcame them, what specifically did we learn and how could we use that knowledge to inspire others?

Just like our other series, “Power Supplements” and “Words That Change Lives”, this will offer periodic episodes on a theme I feel is highly relevant for all of us in these challenging times.

I am honored to welcome as our very first guest for this series, none other than the beautiful and inspirational Claudia Mason. Hers is a story you won’t want to miss. Enjoy!

  • How can we lead our most positive and inspiring lives and bring out our best selves every day?
  • Remaining spiritually grounded while navigating the dark world of money and fame
  • Finding a sense-of-self to aid in staying grounded

Nathan was born in Kansas City and he spent his formative years in Idaho, in a small town where his father was the town doctor. Later, in a pursuit to provide needed support for the entire family of 14 kids, Nathan’s parents made the decision to move to Michigan, and then Mexico City. When he was 16 years old, the family made another move, this time to Utah which is also where Nathan graduated from high school.

He attended college for a year, spent a year in active duty, and also went on a two-year mission with his church. Nathan moved back home in 1994 and started attending Utah Valley University. Later, he made a transition to Seattle where he attended school to become a commercial diver – he used skills from this education when he worked as a diver in oilfields in Louisiana between 1995 and 2000. Nathan then returned to Utah and founded Xlear in order to improve lives by spreading the message of Proactive Health.

Hello my friends!

We pick up our series (“Words That Change Lives”) again with our second installment. (In case you missed it, our first installment can be read here and focused on this phrase from Rabbi Hillel:

  • If not me, who?
  • If not now, when?
  • If I am not for me, who will be?
  • If I am for me only, who am I?”

My goal with this series is to ponder this question — What is one phrase that truly has the power to transform someone’s life? What if you were saying your last words to someone you dearly loved and — after expressing your love, affection, and sense of loss— you only had one phrase to leave with them? One thing to guide them?

You might look into their eyes and say something like, “Remember,…”

(I am reminded of this movie clip about Johnny Cash — “What if you were lying in a gutter dying and you only had time to sing one song?)

So, here we go..

On its face — a simple phrase, yet as I explore further, I see two transformative implications.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Yesterday is officially over, and all of the Yesterdays behind it. For many of us who have gone through mighty struggles (including yours truly), this is good news. This can be liberating.

That regret you’ve been carrying around?

That mistake that’s been haunting you?

That sense of failure?

That sense of shame?

Have you done your best to deal with it? Have you apologized, learned, made amends, forgiven yourself, and done all in your power to be as right with the person and with God as possible?

If not, then Today is your day of action (see point #2 below).

But if so, then understand that starting today, all that stuff is in the past: It is water under the bridge; it is spilled milk. Today is a blank slate; a beautiful new canvas waiting for you to color something beautiful. Look around — God is giving you a fresh start: new sunrise, new birds chirping, new breeze blowing, new plants growing, new smiles from the person you love.

So now you have a choice:

You can choose to reach back into yesterday, grab that ball-and-chain and drag it forward into today. You can choose to stay attached, to ruminate, to carry a burden.

Or

You can cut the chain, walk away and embrace freedom. Let it go. Breathe, exhale. Give it to God.

The choice is yours. “Today is the first day of the rest of my life.”

(Please note: For some people, this mental exercise of leaving the past behind is more difficult (based on habits, personality, level of trauma, etc.) As a concept, cutting ties with the past is simple to describe yet can be quite difficult to execute. If you find yourself struggling, be patient with yourself, understand that you are not alone, and consider a process to get help (e.g. 12-step program or other form of spiritual and emotional healing).

Your most valuable resource is time. And you will never have more time remaining in your life than you have today. So what are you going to do with it?

You will never be as young as you are today.

You will never have as much time available to create and shape your future as you have today. Imagine your life as steering a ship: the small decisions you make today set the course for a large trajectory change in your future.

Realize that you will never have as great an opportunity to change the trajectory of your life as you have been given, today.

So how does that feel?

To me, it feels like good news. It feels energizing.

Wishing you the full sense of both completion and of initiation that Today brings,

Very Truly Yours,

Greetings Friends,

I wanted to share a theme that has been coming up recently in several striking ways: your body’s relationship to the sun.

As we will explore, your body is designed to get sunlight, it needs it, and it does not function optimally without it. In many senses, then, it is not a stretch to say that we are “solar-powered.”

Let’s begin!

1. Vitamin D requires sunlight in order to be activated.

Most of us know this but it bears review: Your body creates vitamin D in an inactive form that travels to your skin and requires exposure to UV-B rays in order to be activated.

From there, Vitamin D does all its essential functions in the body, including strengthening bones, strengthening muscles, fighting cancer, boosting your immune system, preventing and treating autoimmune disease, anti-aging (boosts telomere length), improving blood sugar and insulin levels, and even promoting cardiovascular health (read all about it here).

In fact, Vitamin D is actually a hormone (it was misnamed when first discovered), so it should be thought of as equally important and ubiquitous as thyroid, testosterone, estrogen, etc.

Optimal level: 40 or more (higher if you are fighting cancer).

Solution: 10-15 mins a day of midday sun exposure OR take a supplement (4-6,000 units a day)

Pro-tip: make sure your supplement is combined with Vitamin K2 (helps prevent calcium deposition in arteries)

Read more about vitamin D, skin and sun in this article.

2. The mitochondria in your cells produce more energy when exposed to infrared light.

Your cells derive their energy from chemical reactions in the mitochondria, and a crucial component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain (“cytochrome C oxidase”) is directly stimulated by sunlight (specifically, near-infrared wavelengths).

  • Interestingly, 54.3% of the total radiant energy from the sun is near-infrared radiation (NIR).

If you are looking for exposure to infrared rays while minimizing exposure to UV rays (since, though they catalyze Vitamin D synthesis and create a nice tan, they do accelerate aging of the skin), then the best time is morning or evening, when there is less UV penetrance but still copious amounts of infrared and near-infrared light.

The fact that your mitochondria “rev up” in response to near-infrared radiation (NIR) is why I have long recommended patients with chronic fatigue utilize infrared light therapy.

If sunlight is not available, I suggest an infrared therapy bed (available at most tanning salons) or infrared sauna.

Further reading here: Infrared light and skin: Friend or Foe?

3. Sunlight promotes the formation of liquid crystalline water within your cells.

Ever heard of “liquid crystalline water” or “the 4th phase of water”?

Neither had I -- until about 3 weeks ago. Turns out water exists not only as a solid, liquid and vapor but in a 4th formation that can adhere to itself and create crystalline structures.

And it turns out that this “liquid crystalline” form of water is vital for cellular integrity and fluid mechanics within your body. Once we understand that 99% of the molecules in our body are water, logically, then, the structure and function of those water molecules must have a tremendous health impact.

The most studied and reliable way to increase the amount of liquid crystalline water in your body? Exposure to infrared light, especially at the 3,000 nm wavelength.

For further exploration, I commend to you (and myself!) these resources:

  • Fascinating TED talk by Dr. Gerald Pollack, the O.G. researcher in this area.
  • More information on Dr. Pollack’s work is here.
  • A technical and detailed description from one of my favorite Substack authors.

Friends,

What follows is critical information that you need to understand about the COVID virus and vaccines. I have a commitment to education, to the truth, and to empowerment, so I am passionate today about getting this information into your hands.

Background facts you need to know:

1. The COVID virus travels in a capsule ringed by so-called “spike proteins”, whose function is to allow the virus to bind and gain access to our cells.

2. The mRNA vaccines were designed to cause your own cells to produce these spike proteins, in order that your immune system would respond by producing antibodies. The idea is that high circulating levels of antibodies would then confer protection against any subsequent viral invasion.

3. The million-dollar plot twist is this: it turns out that the spike protein is toxic to our bodies, triggering inflammation and damage wherever it is found (such as the lining of blood vessels in the heart or brain). We used to think that spike proteins were just the way the virus enters cells; turns out they are one of the main ways the virus actually causes damage to your body.

4. It’s not just that free-floating spike proteins cause problems; it’s also that the cells that express spike protein on their surface are thereby targeted for destruction by our immune system.

5. The amount of spike protein produced after a vaccine is greater, and persists for a longer period of time, than after a natural COVID infection. This is because the mRNA strand that tells your cells to produce these proteins has been engineered to resist degradation and to create a “super-potent” burst of spike protein production.

6. Not only so, but the distribution within your body is much more widespread than with a native COVID infection. In a COVID infection, the virus and spike protein are initially confined to your nose, throat and upper airways — and if your immune system responds wells, it does not progress further. In contrast, the vaccine has been placed within specially designed “lipid nano particles” whose job is to enable the vaccine to penetrate even difficult-to-access tissues, like the brain or the testes.

7. Because of facts #3, #4, #5 and #6 the vaccines have significant side effects.

That’s not great news, but that’s not the worst part.

The worst part is that the government and media are not being honest with you and are trying to suppress this information, lest it contribute to the sociological crime of “vaccine hesitation.”

Friends,

We are here to follow-up on information presented last time: the fact that mRNA vaccines (and Novavax) all create production of SARS-COV-2 "spike proteins"; that these proteins are known to circulate widely in your body and provoke inflammation and tissue damage wherever they are found; and that the spike protein is a toxin that directly damages cell membranes.

Of course, a natural SARS-COV-2 infection also brings its own spike protein burden, but this is predicted to be less extensive (in amount and duration) than the vaccine-induced burden, since the vaccine mRNA has been engineered to resist degradation and to create a "super-potent" burst of spike protein production.

(In case you missed it, here is a link to that previous article.)

Okay. Now onto the key ideas you need to know for treatment:

How long does the spike protein last in your body after a natural infection?

A bit hard to ascertain. According to this study, it depends if you recover fully or develop Long COVID. Those who recover typically had less than 30 days of spike exposure; on the other hand, Long COVID patients can continue to demonstrate spike protein out to 12 months (read here).

And after a vaccine or booster?

Detected in blood for several weeks. Isolated from lymph nodes at 60 days. And isolated from cellular exosomes at 4 months.

What can be done to treat/mitigate these harmful effects?

During periods of exposure to spike protein I recommend:

A) Substances that prevent and dissolve blood clots

1. Aspirin (325 mg if you can tolerate it, 81 mg if not). Spike proteins cause a propensity for blood clots (“hypercoagulability”) and create inflammation in the linings of the blood vessels (“endothelium”); hence the benefit of Aspirin -- a blood thinner and anti-inflammatory.

2. Nattokinase 6,000 units a day. Ever heard about stringy substances developing in the blood after COVID infection or vaccine?.. Do some research on fibrin...Turns out that spike protein promotes fibrin formation. The natural home remedy? Nattokinase, which is an enzyme derived from soy that dissolves fibrin-based clots.

Bonus: Here is Dr. McCullough discussing new research that nattokinase also dissolves the spike protein

Bonus: I like this brand, taking 3 at once on an empty stomach. (Bonus: Nattokinase is also good for preventing cardiovascular disease because it has been shown to reverse atherosclerosis.)

Get 7 day free trial

B) Substances that directly bind (and therefore neutralize) spike protein

1. Ivermectin (refer to FLCCC protocols for dosing instructions)

2. Quercetin250 mg, 2x a day (read here)

3. NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine) 600 mg, 2x a day

4. Vitamin C I recommend 1000 mg extended release 2x a day

  1. Resveratrol 250 mg 2x a day

6. Fennel Tea – 1 cup a day

7. Pine needle tea—1 cup a day

8. Anise tea – 1 cup a day

9. St. John’s Wort -- 300 mg 2x a day.

Good day friends!

Guess what? I just sued the WA state medical commission.

In case you missed it, I am listed as the chief plaintiff in a little piece of jurisprudence called Turner et al. vs. Washington Medical Commission lawsuit (accompanied by fellow intrepid doctors like Dr. Renata Moon, Dr. Ryan Cole and Dr. Richard Wilkinson).

(Nothing like staying out of the limelight!)

This garnered a bunch of press – everything from front-page billing on the Sunday edition of our local paper, to RJK’s Children’s Health Defense, and even an editorial in the British Medical Journal (God save the Queen!). We had our first hearing last week and I have to say that our attorney -- Pete Serrano Esq.– did an absolutely superlative job. (Thank you Pete, and all of your talented and dedicated team at the Silent Majority Foundation. It is time to be silent no longer.)

I even scored some sympathy comments from my ol’ buddies Dr. Kory and Dr. Cole (shout out to you, gentleman!).

All light-heartedness aside, the actions of the WA state medical commission, and the response of our lawsuit, touch on crucial concerns for doctors, patients and citizens all across our beloved country. Let’s explore a bit together..

Backstory:

On the surface, the issue revolves around providing Ivermectin (and other early treatments) as a telemedicine option.

As you know, Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine were stigmatized by the media, mainstream medical organizations, federal health institutions and state medical boards. The WA state medical commission (WMC) published a “COVID 10 misinformation statement” that cited the FDA as establishing the “standard of care”, and then boldly warned practitioners to “take note” that Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine are not FDA-approved for COVID.

Then -- just to make it convenient to squash such terrible care -- they conveniently provide a link to file a complaint and “encourage” the public and other practitioners to report any deviation from this standard of care.

Of course, I find this absurd and abusive on many levels:

1) The FDA does not have the mandate, authority nor expertise to determine what specific medicine may or may not benefit a particular patient at a particular point in time.

2) “Off-label” medication usage is common and appropriate in the right context

3) Complaints were accepted and used as a basis for investigation that were not even filed by the patient nor his/her immediate family.

(On the contrary, my early treatment patients and family have overwhelmingly expressed appreciation and gratitude.)

One complaint, for example, came from an ER doctor after looking over my patient’s medication list. Another came from the patient’s granddaughter who lived across the state and was upset when she heard that grandma was given Ivermectin (I am not making this up).

Furthermore, none of my patients suffered any harm that could be directly tied to my treatments. In fact, looking back, my use of these medications was resoundingly successful, and I continue to be astounded with stories of hospitalizations averted and lives saved.

Why should you care?

Our case is (regrettably) just another galling example of the abuse of government power to harass and intimidate physicians (my sympathies, Dr. Nass).

It is also the next in bold series of countermeasures by concerned healthcare providers and sympathetic, capable lawyers all over the country (Godspeed to Drs. Apter, Bowden and Marik in their lawsuit against the FDA).

Our suit is a landmark event that should concern (and encourage) every person who cares about our constitutional rights and, specifically, the issue of medical freedom.

1) It challenges attempted government overreach (just like the FDA proclamations)

2) It seeks to stop the state from intimidating healthcare providers (Hello, Dr. Meryl Nass!)

If you want to hear some of my further thoughts about restoring the doctor-patient relationship, you may be interested in this video I did with Mikki Willis.

As an Integrative Physician with a passion for natural measures, I am excited to bring you the first in a series of articles we will call “Power Supplements”. The goal is to educate and inspire you towards optimal health, with an emphasis always on natural, inexpensive, and practical ideas.

Our very first candidate? N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)

Truly a heavy-hitter, this supplement has proven itself for decades and helped saved countless lives during this pandemic (at the same time that the FDA was trying to ban its distribution). Besides that, it has potent anti-cancer properties, tremendous antioxidant and anti-inflammatory roles, and enormous benefit for the brain.

Reasons to love NAC:

1. Strengthens your immune system, especially in the lungs. NAC gets converted to glutathione, which is one of the two most important antioxidant systems in your body (more on that later). Glutathione is necessary in high quantities for the white blood cells in your lungs to mount an effective immune response -- whether to The Virus, influenza, RSV, bacterial pneumonia, or whatever.

Bonus: NAC also thins mucus. When patients mention problems with thick phlegm, my go-to home remedies are NAC and Mucinex.

2. COVID prevention and treatment. NAC hasdirect anti-viral activity against SARS-COV2 and decreases cytokine storm. Read more here or watch this video.

3. Binds spike protein. Well, well, well -- I have to say that if this were the only thing NAC did, it would still be at the top of my favorites list. Hopefully we all know by now how nasty the COVID spike protein is, and we understand that the mRNA vaccines cause your body to produce it in large quantities. NAC directly binds (thus inactivates) spike protein.

Bonus: Other substances that bind spike protein are Vitamin C, Quercetin, Ivermectin and certain strains of CBD oil.

4. Potent anti-cancer properties. NAC works against cancer via multiple mechanisms. Who knew?

5. Boosts energy output and mitochondrial function. The mitochondria are the parts of your cells dedicated to energy production: the healthier they are, the better every organ system in your body will function (especially energy-intensive organs like your brain and kidneys).

Bonus: Because it boosts energy output throughout the body, it has a significant role in Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Read more here.

6. Antioxidant. You have two main intracellular antioxidant molecules: Superoxide Dismutase and Glutathione. NAC undergoes a chemical reaction to regenerate glutathione; besides that, it has direct antioxidant properties on its own.

Bonus: Because it regenerates glutathione in the liver, it has a vital role supporting detoxification (in fact, NAC is the remedy given in hospitals for liver toxicity due to Tylenol overdose).

7. Anti-inflammatory. But wait, there’s more!.... It also has potent anti-inflammatory actions (by suppressing genes like NF-kB and COX that control the inflammatory process).

Bonus: Thus, it helps with inflammatory conditions like autoimmune problems or osteoarthritis.

8. Great for the brain. NAC freely crosses the blood-brain barrier, thus bringing its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects to the most vital tissues of all. It also boosts dopamine activity.

Bonus: As a result, it has proven benefit in conditions like Brain Fog, brain injury, ALS, and autism. And Psychiatrists have used it for years to treat problems like schitzophrenia, bipolar and OCD. (In-depth summary paper here.)
Whew! I trust you can see why I consider this truly a “power supplement.”

Best if taken on empty stomach. Typical dosing:

  • General health: 600 mg 1x a day
  • Actively sick: 600 mg 2x a day
  • Brian and psychiatric conditions: 1,800 - 2,400 mg a day

NAC has been hard to obtain at times. If you are interested, here is my best brand recommendation (availability, quality, potency and cost).

As an Integrative Physician with a passion for natural measures, I am excited to share with you the second in a series of articles we call “Power Supplements”. The goal is to educate and inspire you towards optimal health, always with an emphasis on natural, inexpensive, and practical ideas.

So what’s next? Fish Oil (aka Omega-3 fatty acids)

Reasons we love fish oil:

1. It prevents sudden cardiac death

HELLO!!... Anyone been hearing about “sudden cardiac death” lately!?

I remember discovering this way back during my medical school days at Harvard, when one of our faculty published this review article.

Prior to his research, there was already a well-established association between fatty fish consumption and reduced fatal heart attacks, but the reason was not precisely understood. His contribution was to discover how: fatty acids from n-3 fish oils are stored in the cell membranes of heart cells and act to stabilize them from aberrant discharges.

2. Other significant cardiac benefits

It also helps reduce the development of atherosclerosis (“hardening of the arteries”), lowers triglyceride levels, and lowers blood pressure (read here and here).

Extra credit: My other all-time favorite cardiovascular supplement is Nattokinase, which thins the blood, dissolves clots, reverses atherosclerosis, lowers blood pressure, and improves cholesterol levels.

3. Profound anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects

As with our good friend NAC, fish oil shows notable anti-inflammatory (inhibits COX) and anti-oxidant functions (stimulates NRF 2 pathways, boosts Superoxide Dismutase and Catalase activity, reduces F2 isoprostanes). Hence, we discover benefit for…

Arthritis:This study in older and overweight individuals showed a 42% reduction in pain after 4 months.

Autoimmune problems, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, lupus erythematosus, and multiple sclerosis (read here).

4. Amazing for the brain

Ever heard of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF)? Well, it strengthens neural connections in areas critical to learning and memory. Think of it like “Miracle Gro” for the brain.

Guess what? DHA supplementation increases BDNF levels. It also promotes the growth of new neurons. Additionally, omega-3s benefit the brain due to their aformentioned anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects.

Bonus: As a result, they hold promise for conditions like Alzheimer’s (they also stimulate the glymphatic system to clear beta Amyloid), depression, schitzophrenia and traumatic brain injury (including concussion). (Read more here and here.)

Bonus: If you would like further exploration of BDNF and other brain health concepts, we did this podcast series and created this brain health curriculum.

5. Boost energy by optimizing mitochondrial health

Does the phrase “mitochondrial biogenesis” mean anything to you? Well, to be honest, it makes my heart go pitter-pat because I understand what is behind that concept – the creation of new mitochondria within our cells. More mitochondria = more energy production = improved function of any given organ.

Mitochondrial function is so important to human health that there is even a well-established concept called “the mitochondrial theory of aging”, which considers loss of mitochondrial number and function as a central pillar in the aging process.

It turns out that omega-3 fatty acids stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis and enhance mitochondrial efficiency (read here).

6. Strength and muscle gains.

If you are interested, here is my best brand recommendation (availability, quality, potency and cost).

Greetings Friends,

Inspired anew by my recent podcast with my friend Dr. Kory (who must be considered the world’s expert on the use of Ivermectin in COVID), I wanted to share some summary insights with you about this truly astonishing medication.

I like to call it “The People’s Medicine.” Why? Well consider for yourself..

From humble origins being discovered in a soil sample near a golf course in Japan (NB: still the only place in the world it has been found), this little natural medicine has benefited human health like few others in history. For good reason the Nobel prize committee called it a “wonder drug” and “a splendid gift from the earth” — and that was before COVID.

We know it won the 2015 Nobel prize in medicine for curing disfiguring parasitic diseases like elephantiasis and river blindness; we know it was listed on the WHO list of “essential medicines”; and we know that it prevents COVID and saves lives via multiple different mechanisms.

  • Technical review article detailing the many ways it fights COVID
  • Summary meta-data of all trials

But this is all fairly well-known; I actually want to move beyond COVID and add value to the discussion by drawing your attention to all the other ways I believe this is truly a miracle medication.

Take a deep dive into all that is Ivermectin by reading the full article found here: Full Article

Great overview video here, especially regarding its impact in COVID and mainstream medical critiques of it.

While this video focuses more on it’s fascinating pre-COVID origins.

Dr. Turner returns to share further in this second episode about the importance of exercise. Join him as he shares with you:

  • The 4 parts of a balanced workout program.. and the one exercise that does it all!
  • The effect of exercise on your immune system
  • How exercise lowers blood sugar levels (aka prevents and treats diabetes)
  • The specific (and dramatic!) ways in which exercise benefits your brain
  • The role of mindfulness while exercising
  • How to train smarter not harder when strength training (maximizing gains while minimizing soreness)
  • Tips for optimizing workout recovery

Key Takeaways

  • A balanced workout program includes aerobics, strength, flexibility and balance/coordination

    • The one exercise I have found that does it all? → Yoga
    • Exercise directly stimulates your immune system by increasing circulating levels of white blood cells
    • Exercise prevents and treats diabetes by causing cells to remodel and sprout new glucose receptors
    • Exercise is the single most important thing you can do for brain health, proven to boost mood, improve IQ, and prevent dementia.
    • Soreness is NOT necessary to gain muscle or strength: if you feel sore the next day, you have pushed too hard
    • The quality of your recovery is as important as the quality of your workout and can be enhanced by maximizing sleep, optimizing protein intake and taking certain supplements

Show Notes

0:20 The 4 parts of a well-rounded workout routine

  • Aerobic activity and VO2 max
  • Strength training - especially important for women, as it builds bone density
  • Flexibility - essential for injury prevention
  • Balance and coordination

1:20 Boosting your immune system through exercise

  • Exercise boosts circulating levels of white blood cells (“demargination”)
  • Further reading: good technical article here

2:48 Exercise improves sugar metabolism and lowers blood glucose

4:48 Exercise is your single most important intervention to boost brain health

  • Your brain’s ability to think clearly is determined mainly by the bloodflow provided to it (aka your cardiovascular health)
  • Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is like Miracle Grow for your brain – it enhances and creates neural connections

    • Exercise boosts BDNF levels!
    • "Exercise doesn't just help your heart, it also helps your brain – in fact, it makes you smarter." -Dr. Turner
    • "Your aerobic capacity is linked to your cognitive ability at all ages!" -Dr. Turner
    • “Nothing stimulates the growth of new brain cells more than exercise.” -Dr. Turner

    • Further reading: good article here and another here

    • Besides boosting blood flow and raising BDNF levels, exercise is good for the brain because movements present neurologic challenges for your brain to solve.
    • Further exploration: at 14:00 of my brain health podcast I go into depth on the role of exercise and the brain

6:37 Mindfulness

  • Being present and focusing deeply on what you are doing will accelerate your gains.

8:05 Strength training smarter not harder

11:25 Recovery after exercise

  • Establish a high quality sleep schedule
  • Assure adequate protein intake

    • 1.5 grams/kg bodyweight per day when doing cardio
    • 1.8 - 2.0 grams/kg when doing strength training
    • Benefits of antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E, Omega-3 fatty acids, alpha lipoic acid, N-acetyl cysteine)

Everyone knows you should be exercising, but here Dr. Turner enhances your motivation by helping you understand why as he explains some of the beneficial effects within your body. These include remodeling of the heart and lungs and creating efficiency of the energy-generating pathways within each cell. He ends by explaining how you can get in great cardiovascular shape in only 4 minutes a day (Really!).

Join him as he shares with you:

  • What physiologic changes underlie the feeling of “being in shape”?
  • Understanding and measuring the efficiency of your heart
  • The vital importance of mitochondrial health and how to improve it
  • Understanding VO2 max and why it is important
  • Overcoming mental barriers to starting an exercise program

Key Takeaways

  • Cardiovascular exercise produces remodeling and strengthening of the heart (“ejection fraction”) and the lungs (“vital capacity”).
  • The feeling of “being in shape” involves not only your heart and lungs but also remodeling of the energy-generating chemical pathways within your cells (aka “mitochondrial health and optimization”).
  • Mitochondrial health is one of the most important anti-aging and wellness concepts because your cells (and therefore organs) can only function optimally to the degree they have enough energy to do so.
  • VO2 max measures the maximum volume of oxygen your body can process and is the best measure of cardiovascular health.
  • How important is it? Well, VO2 max correlates with your likelihood of dying (“all-cause mortality”) – in other words, the higher the VO2 max, the longer your lifespan.
  • Too busy to get in shape? It has been scientifically proven that you only need 4 minutes a day to improve cardiovascular strength and boost VO2 max.

Show Notes

0:08 Introduction

0:33 Being “in shape”: the role of your heart and lungs

  • How strong is your heart?
  • How efficient are your blood vessels at creating flow to every area of your body?
  • And how much air can you inhale and exhale in one breath?

2:12 Your mitochondria: ground zero for all energy creation

  • Every organ in your body needs a certain amount of energy to perform its job; the mitochondria are the parts of your cell where energy generation occurs.
  • Like a wood-burning stove, mitochondria take oxygen and use it to “burn” molecules of fats and sugars in order to create energy and heat.

    • "Your lungs can bring in oxygen, your heart can pump and deliver it, but your cells can still be out of shape." Dr.Turner
    • How many mitochondria do you have in each cell? It depends: this number changes in response to your activity level. You are sending signals to your body every day:

    • Exercise: “I need more mitochondria.”

    • Sitting-around: “I don’t need you so much.”
    • And how efficient is each mitochondria at creating energy? This depends greatly on nutritional and hormonal status.

    • Further exploration: at 25:22 of my anti-aging podcast episode I go into depth on how to optimize mitochondrial health

6:06 VO2 max: the measure of how “in shape” you are

  • VO2 max: The maximum volume of oxygen your body can process in a moment in time.
  • This represents the sum of heart, lung and mitochondrial function.
  • VO2 max is also associated with significant health outcomes:

    • Fewer deaths from cancer.
    • Fewer deaths from heart disease.
    • Strongly associated with lower death rates across all causes.
    • Further reading on VO2 max here

Dr. Turner explores crucial concepts about core strength and how this is the foundation for all movement in the body. From moving your arms, to lifting things off the ground, your core is central (pun intended) to anchoring your body so that it can function correctly. He ends by sharing his favorite exercise routines to most effectively strengthen your core.

Key Takeaways

  • Core strength is the foundation of all movement in your body.
  • Vital muscles in your core include lower abs, lats, glutes and the transversus abdominis.
  • Certain exercise principles allow you to effectively engage your core
  • Dr. Turner’s top recommendations for core exercise

00:14 Introduction

00:24 Locating Your Core

  • Definition: from your belly button downward through your glutes, both front and back

00:38 Who cares? Core strength is the foundation of all movement

  • I repeat: All movement begins in your core.
  • Ex) Your arm is attached to your shoulder blade, which is attached to your spine. In order to lift anything heavy with your arm, you must first anchor and stabilize your shoulder blade, which requires anchoring and stabilizing your spine.

1:20 Roles of several important core muscles

  • Lower abs + glutes

    • Weak glute + weak lower abs + tight hip flexors = “anterior pelvic tilt”

      • This creates strain in your lumbar spine
      • Latissimus
    • Tensions-up and creates support for your lower back area

3:20 Spinal Stabilization

  • Your spine is flexible – it is more like a pool noodle than a rod.
  • No matter what your back problem is, it will benefit from stability and this comes via improved core strength and coordination.

    • Ex) Tightening your abs and glutes before a lift increases spine support by 10x.

4:21 - Vital role of the Transversus Abdominis muscle

  • Deep, circular abdominal muscle
  • Like an internal “belt” that loops around your spine.
  • How to strengthen it? Suck in your belly button

5:50 Ways to target and strengthen your core

  • Suck in your belly button to engage transversus abdominis
  • Exercise from a standing position (vs. being seated in a machine)
  • Minimize points of contact with the ground

    1. Fewer points of contact engages and strengthens your core

      • Ex) Balancing on one foot while doing dumbbell curls
      • Ex) Pushups with one foot raised
      • Choose exercises that involve coordination of multiple core muscles
    2. Planks, side planks or table-tops

Resources

Beginner: transversus abdominis, bridge, planks, side planks or table-tops

Advanced: my favorite core exercise routines: here, here and here

Greetings Friends,

As I am writing this I am about to depart for some vacation in Hawaii with my youngest daughter. (Yes!)...Which brings us to the topic of sunlight.

Is getting direct exposure to the sun good? Bad? Both?

We all know the cautions of too much sun but let’s take a moment to review—and perhaps learn—some of the significant health benefits.

  • Vitamin D production.

The more we learn about Vitamin D, the more important we realize how crucial it is for health and wellbeing. It is actually a hormone, and, in fact, has one of the widest reaches of any hormone in your body – with receptors for it found on nearly every cell.

Wanna be shocked and awed?

Do an image search for “vitamin D deficient mouse” and tell me what you find.

Turns out Vitamin D -- besides bone and muscle health -- has vital roles with cancer, immune function, autoimmune disease, anti-aging (telomere length), blood sugar and insulin, and even cardiovascular health (read all about it here).

The same UV rays that cause you to tan are the ones that promote activation of vitamin D in your skin. The problem of vitamin D deficiency is widespread because most of us 1) don’t get out in the sun, 2) are covered in clothing or sunscreen when we do, or 3) live at northern latitudes (Washington state, anyone?) where the penetrance of these rays is insufficient for much of the year.

What’s your vitamin D level?

This is something you should know-- one of those health data points you keep an eye on (like blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol).

Optimal level is 40 or more (higher if you are fighting cancer).

Solution: 10-15 mins a day of midday sun exposure or take a supplement (4-6,000 units a day)

Pro-tip: make sure your supplement is combined with Vitamin K (helps prevent calcium deposition in arteries)

  • Energy and Alertness

Like we discussed in an earlier episode, the blue wavelength of light stimulates the center of the brain that controls alertness (Suprachiasmatic Nucleus). But, in addition, did you know that sunlight regulates the production of your adrenal hormones?

This occurs via a phenomenon called the Cortisol Awakening Response: basically, a surge in cortisol after being exposed to morning light, resulting in a burst of energy. (In fact, when patients have chronic fatigue, one of the first things I do is assess for undiagnosed adrenal insufficiency.) Cortisol causes a burst of energy, raises blood sugar and blood pressure, and reduces inflammation – basically prepping your body to get up and get going.

Now, as you have probably heard, too much cortisol chronically is a bad concept; but so is too little when you need it (like first thing in the morning). In fact, severely low cortisol levels can be a life-threatening diagnosis (Addison’s disease).

  • Mood

“I spend time in the sun and I feel better.”

Indeed. Turns out that your skin produces serotonin in response to light. (Who knew!?)

Besides that, light triggers further serotonin production when it hits the retina of your eyes, and light even affects the binding chemistry of serotonin once released... Amazing stuff.

So there we have it, friends. Just like your favorite pet chameleon, sunlight does the body good. From fighting cancer to helping regulate blood sugar; from boosting mood to boosting bone density, sunlight sets in motion multiple physiologic process associated with health.

And besides, who doesn’t like a killer tan?

Dr. Turner joins A Global and Holistic Approach to Your Health as a guest to discuss his holistic, integrative approach to Long COVID treatment.

His initial approach to Long COVID include addressing pneumonia symptoms, low adrenal function, brain inflammation, and improving vascular/circular health.

Join Dr. Turner for a further exploration of sleep and the immune system, including the importance of a resting bedtime ritual and slow-wave sleep.

3 Key Takeaways

  • You don’t need to choose between western and eastern medicine to improve your quality of life. Oftentimes, it takes a little bit of everything to get you to your best health.
  • Long COVID is treatable. I’ll share four methods for treating COVID, boosting your immunity, and improving your overall health.
  • Sleep is essential for your immune system. Removing hours from your rest routine will sabotage your immune system and prolong any illness.

Time Stamps

[1:40] Introduction

[4:54] Dr. Turner’s 4 initial approaches to long-term COVID

  • Any active COVID symptoms?

    • In particular, any cough or lingering sign of pneumonia?
    • Assess the patient’s adrenal function

    • COVID can impact your adrenal glands

    • Symptoms: brain fog; fatigue, especially in the morning

      • If you have a good night’s sleep but still awaken feeling tired, that is a cardinal sign of low adrenal function
      • Reduce brain inflammation
    • This is what drives brain fog or loss of taste and smell (neuro-inflammatory damage)

    • Can be addressed with supplements or medication
    • Improve circulation

    • COVID predisposes to blood clots

    • Spike protein damages lining of blood vessels
    • Can be addressed with exercise, supplements, and medication

[11:37] Having long COVID is not an interminable sentence

  • Recommends Front Line COVID Critical Care (FLCCC)

    • Publishes effective long haul protocols
    • Long COVID is treatable and curable

[18:33] Sleep health: The importance of a resting bedtime ritual

  • Learn to give yourself a resting bedtime ritual, like tucking kids into bed
  • The key is transitioning yourself from day-to-day energy for problem-solving to a nighttime state of internal recharge
  • Don’t watch TV, pay bills, or having emotionally-charged conversations right before bed
  • Some examples of restful activities: journaling, listening to calming music, reading with a night light, soaking feet in epsom salt, etc.

[20:34] Sleep health: optimal conditions

  • Think of a tomb: cold, dark and quiet

    • Optimal sleep is at about 66 degrees
    • Slow-wave Sleep

    • Deepest, most restorative stage of sleep

    • Lack of slow-wave sleep is correlated with Alzheimer’s
    • Can be improved with exercise, supplements, medication

[23:24] Sleep and your immune system

  • During sleep your body goes through cellular turnover and renewal
  • The body reproduces approximately 300 billion cells per day
  • Without sufficient sleep, your body is not producing the necessary immune cells to maintain optimal health. Excellent article here.
  • Your immune system fights infections mainly when you are asleep, not when you are awake!

[30:54] Final thoughts

  • Holistic, integrative solutions to living healthy, drawn from his experience as a physician, teacher, and high-level athletic enthusiast

Dear Friends,

Like you, I am eager to see this whole pandemic come to an end and to do everything in my power to help myself, and those I love, stay healthy and strong.

Like you, I know people – close friends – who have died from this dreadful disease. We have suffered way too many lives lost; and way too much social, educational, and economic damage.

Perhaps differently from you, as a physician, I have been blessed with inside knowledge of physiology and medicine – and, if I don’t know something, I know where to look to educate myself on it. I can look behind the veil of media censorship to understand what truly does and does not work. I have used this knowledge, combined with practical expertise, to successfully provide prevention and early treatment for thousands of people.

My desire is to make this critical information more widely known.

It’s that time of the year – trees bloom, hot winds blow, sinuses get irritable, and red eyes and sneezing threaten to become a part of your daily life. Allergy season.

I struggled with this as a child growing up in some of the richest and most diverse farmland in the country – central California. Hot summer days found me wanting to claw my eyes out and became the occasion for trips to the ER because of asthma flares. My mom lived in a high state of alert.

Can anything be done from a natural viewpoint to help?

Absolutely.

Magnesium. Did you know you have a 50% chance of being magnesium deficient? Turns out to be the most common mineral deficiency in the U.S – estimated to effect half our population. This is thought to be due to the declining mineral content in our soils and the fact that processed foods become depleted of magnesium. Also, people who exercise heavily have an increased need.

Magnesium deficiency can cause an increase in histamine levels in the blood after being exposed to allergens. (Histamine is released from mast cells and is the main chemical mediator of an allergic reaction -- hence the benefit of “antihistamines”.) Good sources include nuts, legumes, fiber-rich whole grains, spinach, dairy, and dark chocolate (yay!). Because deficiency is so common, it is advisable that everyone supplement with 300 mg a day of a well-absorbed form (citrate, glycinate, taurate, aspartate or threonate).

Tip: The most accurate blood test for magnesium is not a simple serum concentration (which is what is typically ordered) but an “RBC magnesium” (aka Red Blood Cell magnesium).

Tip: Magnesium is well-absorbed topically. So you can buy some magnesium oil and apply once daily or enjoy a foot soak with Epsom salts (which contain significant amounts).

Tip: Do you struggle to keep your blood levels of Vitamin D up? In other words, are you one of those people who must take seemingly excessive doses of Vitamin D just to keep a minimal blood level? This is a sign of magnesium deficiency (read more here).

Quercetin: A natural antioxidant and bioflavonoid with proven anti-histamine effects, it’s naturally found in broccoli, cauliflower, green tea, and citrus fruits. If taken as a supplement, I recommend 250 mg or so a day. A great value brand is here (paired with bromelain, which reduces inflammation).

Bonus: Quercetin has strong anti-viral activity and is therefore recommended for COVID treatment (see FLCCC protocols), besides its activity against other viruses like the flu or herpes.

Vitamin C. Besides its roles as an antioxidant and its importance in adrenal function, vitamin C helps reduce histamine release and speeds histamine breakdown. For severe allergy sufferers, I recommend a sustained release formulation, like this one, at 1000-2000 mg a day.

And there we have it, my friends: my best suggestions to get some immediate allergy relief, naturally.

Bonus Content: If you need medication, my go-to is a simple over-the-counter Claritin 10 mg. Lasts all day and non-drowsy. Works like a champ.

Dr. Turner walks us through his five steps for effectively setting goals and achieving them. Establishing your goal and developing a plan are the steps most people are familiar with, but they are only part of the puzzle.

Do you have hope that it's actually possible to reach your goals? Do you have an emotional ‘why’ that is strong enough to carry you through to the end? Do you have a plan for dealing with the setbacks that will inevitably occur along the way?

Join Dr. Turner on this episode of Manna to discover the answers to those questions.

5 Key Takeaways:

  • Hold-on to the hope that you can achieve what you set out to do. Believe in yourself and the possibility of a better tomorrow.
  • Lay out a goal and state it as clearly as possible.
  • Stoke your motivation, your ‘why,’ for the goal that you’ve set. This will help you take the necessary steps, especially the difficult ones.
  • Create a plan to work toward the goal. Be detailed and scientific. “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”
  • Resiliency: respond to setbacks with positivity and determination. They are inevitable and happen to everyone. Setbacks only become failures if you stop trying.

Hello my friends!

Isn’t it terrible when you or someone you love has that persistent feeling of a queasy stomach and can’t get relief? Could be a windy road, sea sickness, or even a dose of bad street food.

I remember my wife suffering from terrible morning sickness during her pregnancy and not wanting to take pharmaceutical medications. What to do?

Turns out there is a simple, powerful, and immediate remedy: apply pressure to the proper areas on your hand.

This acupressure technique comes to us from the world of Chinese Medicine and has been proven highly effective – even among cases as serious as post-chemotherapy and post-anesthesia.

There are two points I find most helpful:

  1. On the backside of your hand, in the meaty part between your thumb and index finger (“large intestine 4”).

  2. Three fingers below your wrist, in between the two main tendons (“pericardium 6”).
In fact, this spot is so effective that it is used as the basis for these nausea bands (which were what solved my wife’s problem!).

Wishing you health and wellness today,

Dr. Turner

Ever had that feeling of trying to start your day and just not having the energy to get going? Or doing fine till mid-afternoon, when you start begging for a nap, coffee or some Red Bull?

I’ve been there, trust me.

I’m going to share with you a safe, all-natural and immediately effective solution…

The safe, all-natural and immediately effective solution for an instant and sustained burst of energy is this: a blue light box.
Perhaps you have heard about these for treating Seasonal Affective Disorder (basically, mild depression due to lack of sunlight). Turns out that’s not all – the blue spectrum of light also powerfully stimulates the alerting centers of your brain.
Even been tent camping? Ever fallen asleep late, exhausted, and yet found yourself snapping awake at the break of dawn? Why did that happen? Why didn’t you sleep more?
Dawn light has a predominance of blue-spectrum wavelengths, which enter through the tent, through your closed eyelids, through your pupil and directly to the part of your brain that controls alertness (“suprachiasmatic nucleus”).
You can buy a quality unit online for about $60. Use for between 10-30 minutes.

Painful cramps at night are the plague of millions of people around the world.

But you don’t have to suffer in silence. A simple home remedy – yellow mustard – can be surprisingly effective.

No well-designed research has been performed, but there is a groundswell of anecdotal reports of significant and immediate benefit.

Simply rub a teaspoon of yellow or Dijon mustard onto the cramping area, or take it orally. Relief should be present within minutes.

It is not known exactly how this works, but the thought is that it is the pH level due to the presence of vinegar. (Similarly, pickles and pickle juice also work for this problem.)

This works not only for nocturnal cramps but also painful cramps that occur during exercise or significant post-exercise muscle soreness.

Wishing you health and wellness today!

This first week, I want to talk about blood sugar. As you are aware, high circulating levels of blood sugar are unhealthy. Why? Because it begins to chemically react with surrounding cells and with the linings of your blood vessels in a way that is damaging.

Prolonged damage to blood vessels is the reason for the severe problems seen in diabetes -- heart attacks and strokes, kidney damage, nerve damage, poor wound healing, and poor circulation (amputation).

Cinnamon can do wonders to naturally and effectively lower your blood sugar. Turns out that cinnamon helps your cells become more sensitive to existing insulin levels and also mimics insulin all on its own. I have seen patients take their blood sugars from the 300s to the 180s just with consistent daily use!

One teaspoon once a day is sufficient; or, if you use capsules, aim for 2000-3000 mg a day, taken after meals. The type of cinnamon does not matter: use whatever is most cost-effective.

Dr. Turner concludes his series on helping you boost your brain health naturally. Tune-in and learn why sugar is so damagingfor your brain; a review of all the brain health principles presented thus far, and a Q&A of brain-related questions, including a discussion of the vagus nerve, why your brain loves words, effects of fasting, screen time, and eating habits.

4 Key Takeaways

  • Sugar is damaging for your brain in multiple ways (decreases BDNF, is addictive, drives inflammation, promotes overeating).
  • Exercise is the single most important thing you can do for your brain.
  • Preventing atherosclerosis by following a heart and brain-healthy diet boosts blood flow and prevents strokes.
  • Certain supplements will boost your brainpower (Ginkgo Biloba, Resveratrol, Gotu Kola).

Show Notes

[1:06] Public enemy #1: Sugar

  • Decreases BDNF levels
  • Is more addictive than cocaine

    • "The problem with sugar is that it acts no different than a drug addiction, with diminishing rewards and increasing cravings over time" -Dr. Turner
    • Is inflammatory
    • Damages the brain’s ability to sense fullness, therefore making you prone to overeating

[2:30] Let's review!

  • The brain is constantly remodeling in response to decisions you make every day.
  • "A thought is a thing – it is a physical, 3-dimensional connection between nerves in your brain." -Dr. Turner

    • Therefore, common thought patterns (for better or worse) create neurologic ruts in your brain and become habitual.
    • The thing your brain needs the most? Blood flow

    • Therefore exercise is the most important element of boosting brain health.

    • Therefore eating in ways that promote circulatory health and avoid atherosclerosis is essential
    • Gingko Biloba boosts blood flow
    • Certain supplements will boost your brainpower (Gingko, Resveratrol, Gotu Kola)
    • Exercise makes you smarter (boosts blood flow, boosts BDNF, is a complex neuromotor task)
    • Get more BDNF in your life!

[8:28] Q&A

  • Role of dopamine
  • Role of testosterone for your brain and heart

    • "Testosterone is not the problem when it comes to your heart. It's actually the solution." -Dr. Michael Turner

[12:00] Is the damage sugar does to your ability to feel full temporary?

  • Creates a temporary problem that can become chronic if you continue

[??] Can the brain heal chronic physical illness?

  • Yes. The vagus nerve, for example, has profound anti-inflammatory effects and has been shown to improve Rheumatoid Arthritis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Host Dr. Turner continues the discussion on improving your brain, starting with an analysis of “foods that harm and foods that heal”. Tune-in and learn how saturated fats harmyour body, how to boost blood flow to your brain, and discover how solving The French Paradox (people who eat more fatty foods and yet remain healthy) gives you a huge resource to boost your brain.

3 Key Takeaways

  • Your cognitive ability is linked to your aerobic capacity, no matter your age.
  • Foods that harm are those that promote atherosclerosis (saturated fat, trans fat, sugar, refined carbs, meat).
  • It is possible to reverse atherosclerosis by changing your diet. I will show you how.

Show Notes

[00:40] Foods that harm:

  • Saturated fat intake (e.g. bacon) causes an immediate reduction in blood flow, promotes inflammation of the blood vessels, and promotes blood clotting.

    • Why is McDonald's bad for you? First, it’s the grease (the saturated fat); second, it’s the sugar.
    • "It can be hard to show that saturated fat is directly causing stroke or heart attack. But let's just say: It's not doing you any favors." -Dr. Turner

[4:48] Trans Fats are completely artificial, a byproduct of the processed food industry

  • Trans fat is found in margarine, fried food, pastries
  • Many states have banned trans fat in their food sources

[6:00] Sugar and refined carbs promote inflammation and insulin spikes

[6:36] Meat intake is correlated to atherosclerosis; a vegetarian diet can reverse it.

[7:10] Foods that heal:

  • Anything that reduces inflammation, oxidative stress, or LDL levels.
  • E.g. Oats, nuts, soy, legumes, healthy fats, fiber, berries

[14:00] How do I boost blood flow in my brain?

  • Gingko Bilobawill boost the brain's blood flow
  • Exercise!

    • "Exercise doesn't just help your heart, it also helps your brain – in fact, it makes you smarter." -Dr. Turner
    • “Nothing stimulates the growth of new brain cells more than exercise.”
    • Wikipedia it!
    • "Your aerobic capacity is linked to your cognitive ability at all ages!" -Dr. Turner
    • Besides boosting blood flow, exercise is good for the brain because movements present neurologic challenges, and exercise boosts BDNF levels.

[22:10] BDNF (Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor) is "miracle grow for the brain"

  • A molecule that strengthens neural connections and promotes nerve health – especially in areas important for learning and memory.
  • Increase BDNF levels with resveratrol and Gotu Kola

    • The French Paradox: Why do people who eats lots of cheese, bread and meat not end up with much heart disease?
    • It is thought to be the red wine intake. (And likely, also, the walking culture.)
    • "Resveratrol is one of the reasons why red wine is healthy" -Dr. Turner

Your amazing brain: the source of your memories, your thoughts, your intelligence, and your personality.

The control center of the rest of your body.

Wouldn’t it make sense to invest a little time learning to optimize the health of your brain?

Join Dr. Turner as he educates and inspires you towards optimal brain health.

3 Key Takeaways

  • All the functions of your brain are based on the integrity and health of 3-dimensional, physical connections between nerves.
  • The most essential factor for a healthy brain is sufficient blood flow.
  • Atherosclerosis (“hardening of the arteries”) results in diminished blood flow, thereby killing your brain slowly (aka dementia) or suddenly (aka stroke).

Show Notes

[2:26] Importance of prevention

  • "Instead of asking 'Now that I'm sick, What do I do about it?' It's asking "How do I be as healthy as possible and how good would that feel?" -Dr. Turner

[3:35] Your brain: a network of 200 billion interconnected cells

  • Each nerve has up to 4,000 "tentacles" connecting it to surrounding nerves.
  • Each connection is called a “synapse”.
  • Alzheimer’s involves shrinkage in which these connections are pulled apart; eventually, entire networks (memory, movement, speech) cannot function.

[8:30] Memories and learning both require strong neural connections

  • Every memory you have is stored as a series of physical connections between nerves!
  • Any time you learn something new you are creating new connections between neurons.

[9:50] What does the brain most need in order to be healthy? Adequate blood flow

[13:55] What do strokes and heart attacks have in common? Lack of blood flow due to atherosclerosis

  • The problem is the same in the brain or the heart: an acute lack of blood flow
  • Some doctors have proposed renaming “strokes” as “brain attacks”.
  • "If you could prevent atherosclerosis, you'd be preventing the number one cause of death in the world." -Dr. Turner

[19:25] Atherosclerosis: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

  • Smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, LDL cholesterol

Dr. Michael Turner joins Josh Tapp on The Lucky Titan podcast to discuss his 5 dimensions of healthy living, focused around the question, “What would it feel like to be as healthy as I could possibly be?”

Key Takeaways

  • Your most valuable asset is your health, which impacts all other areas of life.
  • Quality sleep is foundational to good health.
  • Eating well isn’t about depriving yourself of things that taste good; rather, moderation is the key idea.
  • Consistent exercise is your single best anti-aging strategy, affecting multiple pathways of aging.
  • Stay mentally healthy with positive self-reinforcement and affirmations.
  • Social connectedness is vital: our purpose in life is ultimately to give and receive love, both with God and with others.

Time Stamps

00:00 Introduction

01:02 From Classroom Teacher to Doctor to Online Teacher

  • Burned out from undergrad; needed to take some time doing something else
  • Started as a 5th grade teacher (all subjects); later moved to 7th and 8th grade Science.
  • Desire to reach more people, more effectively, through online health courses
  • Ability for patients and others to access online curriculum content 24 hours a day

05:00 Your greatest possible investment = improving your health

  • Your most valuable asset is your health
  • What would it feel like to be as healthy as you could possibly be?
  • And what would be the return on investment for spending time getting healthier?
  • Don’t compare yourself to others around you: this is about you, not them

07:56 Dimension #1: The importance of sleep

  • Immune system
  • Your immune system has natural killer (NK) cells that target infections and cancerous cells in your body 24/7
  • After just one night of 4 hours of sleep, NK cell activity dropped by 30%
  • Mental acuity
    • After being awake for 18 hours, you become as cognitively impaired as someone who has a blood alcohol level of 0.05

Brain health:

  • Strong correlation between poor sleep and Alzheimer’s
  • Sleep is a cleansing process that helps reduce amyloid proteins

11:48 Optimal Sleep Patterns

  • You want your sleep to be front-loaded; earlier than midnight is ideal
    • 6 hours of sleep between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. is not the same as between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m.
  • Aim for 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep
  • If you find yourself needing to take a nap in the afternoon, or drinking coffee regularly, you’re not getting enough sleep

14:15 Dimension #2: Eating patterns and supplements

  • Supplements can be powerful
    • E.g. Ginkgo Biloba improves blood flow to the brain
    • Dr. Daniel Amen – “All of my best brains take Ginkgo.”
  • The overall healthiest diet is whole foods and plant-based (WFPB).
  • Avoid sugar and saturated fat.
  • Moderation, not deprivation, is the key concept, since food isn’t just about your health; Social aspects, taste, joy of living

19:35 Dimension #3: Exercise

27:30 Dimension #4: Mental Health

30:39 Dimension #5: Social Connectedness

“Behind every challenge is an opportunity.” The last two years of the COVID pandemic have been a difficult time for everyone, but like all other challenges we go through, they are also an opportunity to act in courage and faith to lift others up.

Dr. Turner concludes his candid reminisces about hardships from his past, including adopting four children, two marriages that ended in divorce, taking the biggest risk of his career, and losing close friends to COVID. But most importantly, he shares lessons learned from these adversities.

Join Dr. Turner on today’s episode of Manna as he shares a message of hope and encouragement.

Key Takeaways

We all face challenges in life, some more difficult than others. For Dr. Turner, these included:

  • Adopting four young children
  • Two marriages that ended in divorce
  • Giving up a well-paying, comfortable job
  • Losing two dear friends to COVID

But what ultimately matters is how we respond to those challenges. “The man who thinks he can and the man who thinks he can’t are both right. Which one are you?” Henry Ford.
