Knowing how much to eat can be hard when trying to just “listen to the body,” especially if we don’t really know how to trust in it’s hunger/fullness cues.
✨ In this episode I breakdown a 3-part phrase, AIM, to help you connect with food and your body at meal times to discover (for yourself) how much to eat instead of relying on rigid rules for amounts so that you can rely on yourself to know how much to eat - for life.

Do you feel your identity is in some way tied to being “the healthy one” or living a “healthy lifestyle?”. In a world of health, fitness and nutrition influencers, it can be hard to embody wellness rather than simply pretend to always do the “healthy” thing instead. In this episode, I share with you how to embrace the raw realities of living a life where wellness isn’t just practiced and/or played pretend,, but it’s instead, embodied.

Cherie @foodfreedomtherapist and I have a robust conversion about weight, weight loss, intuitive eating, and our truest deepest desires in life. We talk about our perceptions about weight, the reality of weight, relevant research on the topic, and how we must confront our weight belief/mindset before beginning our intuitive eating journey. In the episode we more specifically discuss:
✨ How to trust ourselves, our bodies, and food to nourish us, and how diet culture fosters distrust around food, our body cues and ourselves.
✨ What are the deeper meanings of weight gain and weight loss? What meanings have we attached to weight and weight change?
✨Cherie shares some research about weight and how overweight individuals might be better able to withstand chronic conditions and cancer better than “normal” and “underweight” individuals. (We reference Christy Harrison of Food Psych).

The mind-body connection is (IMO) the biggest component of total wellness no one’s talking about, other than Casey Berglund. Casey believes you can strengthen your mind-body connection by recognizing the disconnected states (feeling anxious, frustrated and overanalyzing) and by coming back into our bodies to feel more grounded and whole. Casey will absolutely blow your mind in this episode, discussing...
✨ How diet culture keeps us disembodied in “all in our heads” when it comes to food and healing (and how 95% of the time, the anxiety isn’t about food).
✨How mind-body integration offers a deep sense of confidence in oneself beyond what changing one’s body size can provide.
✨ How to connect with discomfort in the body (the fear, anxiety, stress) in a way that’s serving, rather than avoiding it using food or other coping mechanisms.

The mindset “move to lose weight” is ingrained in our minds so much so that it’s made fitness feel like punishment for the bodies we’re in. Jamie thinks differently, believing that we build a healthy, sustainable and life-long relationship with movement when it works with our bodies, not against them. In the episode we discuss...
✨ Reasons to move/exercise other than weight loss and why removing weight loss from our motivations to exercise is important.
✨ How body comments, messaging, and stigma from diet culture get in the way of us honoring our body with movement (and how we try to “just push through instead).
✨ How an embodied approach to fitness builds body trust, helping us (actually) enjoy movement and exercise rather than hate in in hopes of achieving better health.

Debbie Emick found her people-pleasing and perfectionist tendencies impacting her health and ability to receive the care she needed, immensely. Disconnected from (and distrusting of) her body, Debbie fought to improve her health in many conventional ways, to no avail, and she tried to do it perfect. Does this sound relatable?
In the episode we discuss…
✨ Debbie’s trial and error navigating the more superficial aspects of healing, following “quick fix” advice from medical experts, pharmaceutical interventions, etc.
✨ Her discovering a more holistic approach toward healing (nutrition, exercise, etc.) led to an internal search for mental/emotional health, ultimately creating less physical illness and pain.
✨ Learning to move beyond the coping mechanisms and personality traits attached to for survival that no longer served one or one's health
✨ Living a less fearful life from a place of power that allows one to create the life they desire today.
Debbie has so much value to share that she wrote a book, called, The Other Side of Perfect: Discovering the Mind Body Connection to Healing Chronic Illness. She’s also co-author of a blog, www.gobucketyourself.com, and co-host of the show, One Life, Live It!

They say we “should” drink more water, eat more vegetables, do X health-related thing, etc. The “should’s,” inevitably, make us feel like a failure when it comes to our health because we simply can't keep up with all their advice, rules and expectations. In the episode I discuss:
✨ Where the “should’s” are derived from
✨ A poem from Deborah Anne Quibell’s book, “Soul Bird: Poems for Flying” to help us invite the “should’s” in, cautiously.
✨ How to let your body lead despite the “should’s”, to continue nurturing your body in your own, unique way.
A really enjoyable and impactful episode to tune into. How will you manage your internal dialogue of should’s?

What foods do we need to eat to lose weight, improve metabolism, clear skin, or improve digestion? In the show, I talk about why this approach to nutrition and health isn’t as beneficial as talking about how we eat instead, addressing our thoughts/feelings/attitudes/beliefs about (and behaviors with) food. Talking about how we eat transforms what we eat, and we find ourselves healthier in the process.

Embodiment & Intuitive Eating Coach, Nicole Alyssa Morse, talks about the need for intimacy and connection with food and our bodies is key to healing. Maybe what weight loss protocols are missing is deeper connection and care. In the episode we discuss:
✨ How we use food to feel or to prevent ourselves from feeling at times, using it as a tool to disconnect us from our bodies.
✨ How conflict with food can arise from lacking love, nurturing and care in our upbringing.
✨ The reasons or longing behind emotional or binge eating and the first steps to reconnecting with yourself with food…

We’re taught you can manage your weight and your health by using scales and phone apps while having someone hold you accountable to “staying on track.” However, in this episode, I discuss why you truly DON’T need to manage your nutrition and be constantly “held accountable” when eating intuitively, instead. It’s a much more free and satisfying way to eat and live! Learn how in the episode.

Home organization and decluttering expert, Christine Stone, believes ease and clarity comes with living an organized home. However, our “food and body stuff” can sometimes get in the way with our ability to clear and declutter without even knowing it.
In the episode, Christine and I discuss:
✨ How organizing our home, our closets and our kitchen, helps build confidence in our life.
✨ Why we clutter our spaces, despite being, characteristically, pretty organized people in general.
✨ How to plan to start clearing and organizing your home, start to finish, starting with the kitchen.

Oftentimes, weight loss comes with praise and weight gain often comes with crickets. In this special episode I dive into reasons why body comments (even with good intentions) can be harmful and how to offer more valuable comments and compliments and/or redirect the conversation instead. In the episode we discuss:
✨ How praising weight loss can be (unintentionally) praising unhealthy behaviors, which might confuse a person’s perception and pursuit of health and wellbeing.
✨ How to respond when someone compliments you on your body when you’re working on body acceptance (and/or intuitive eating).
✨ How to comment on someone else without commenting on their weight, resulting in deeper connection and care.

Dr. WendyLeigh White, a licenced naturopathic doctor and non-diet HAES practitioner shows how a holistic view of the body and how it functions supports our journey to heal the relationships we have with food and our body. She offers a great perspective in this episode, highlighting:

Ambitious and determined women often get sucked into diet culture’s messaging of “just persevere,” “just keep going” and do so until hitting the point of (sometimes extreme) exhaustion. This does more harm to our health than good. In the episode I discuss:

✨ How messages of perseverance keep us disembodied and detached from our bodies and how this affects our health.

We’re wired for connection, belonging, and love, but conditioning from diet culture can separate us from our true selves and others. Therapist Melissa Parks helps us unpack this message in the episode as we discuss:

✨ How to begin to heal from unmet needs from primary caregivers earlier in life that are showing up as our “food and body stuff” now.
✨ Emotional eating, and why we might exhibit a “dorsal” response to feeling overwhelmed with diet culture or body image thoughts and information.

Last week Gwyneth Paltrow, globally renowned actress turned health and wellness influencer, came out with the diet book, “Intuitive Fasting” last week and I have many bones to pick with it. In this episode I unpack:
✨ How diet culture persuades us to invest our time, effort and energy into damaging and unproven weight loss efforts under the guise of “health.”
✨ Why “intuitive fasting” won’t work for (and could potentially harm) thousands of American women.
✨ How intuitive eating still reigns supreme as a truly anti-diet approach that doesn’t require a prerequisite of fasting or other means of weight loss or restriction beforehand.

Dr. Jill Zimmerman attributes much of the pain we experience in the body to gradual (and natural) shifting out of optimal alignment, not weight. In this info-packed episode Dr. Jill explains:

In this episode, I make a convincing argument about how by including sugar and sugary foods in the diet (strictly reducing them or not cutting them out) can help us attain better health outcomes (mentally, physically and emotionally) by having achieving healthier relationship with food. In the episode I discuss:
✨How the body rebels against restricting sugar and always wants what it “can’t” have.
✨ How “cutting out” sugar leads to having a poor relationship with many foods, even those containing much nutritional value.
✨ The importance of sugar can provide to our diet and our love beyond nutritional value.
AND MORE.
You’re invited to RATE, SUBSCRIBE, and SHARE this episode with anyone who’s tried to cut out sugar (or any other food) from their diet!

✨ The (millions of) purposes of fitness beyond weight change, including function, mobility and long term health.
✨ What embodiment movement can feel like, with various examples…

Many say they’re not dieting, they're just, “eating clean.” In the episode I talk about how “clean eating’ is (actually) just another form of dieting. I discuss:
✨ How you’ll never “eat clean” enough for clean eating’s standards.
✨ How guilt builds on us after eating “unclean” foods
✨ How processed foods “actually” are healthy and can be nutritious.
You’re so invited to share this episode with someone who feels really stuck in clean eating ways!

At the start of the new year we naturally set goals to work toward becoming better versions of ourselves, but so often we set ourselves up for failure. So to save us from this self-sabotage, in this episode I unpack:
✨ How to reject diet culture and not be “food and body (and weight loss) obsessed” at the start of this new year (and a reminder why diets don’t work).
✨ How to manage expectations so we can feel a sense of momentum of progress, rather than a failure.

Casey Berglund from Worthy and Well is back for a powerful episode where she offers several practical self-coaching tools to help us navigate difficult life situations (including food and body challenges) to help us better understand ourselves and what we need to stay connected, authentic, and true to ourselves in the process. In the episode we discuss:
✨ What it means to “hold space” for ourselves and the power of having space held for us to feel safe to share thoughts, feelings, etc.
✨ Several specific coaching tips that increase safety, openness and authenticity that can also help connect us (and others) with our purpose.
✨ How to create a container in which we can live with less fear, to feel safe and supported, rather than judging our experiences and look for an incomplete, quick fix.

✨ How isolation and loneliness this year affected our health and wellbeing.
✨ Christmas, blue zones around the world, and our need to both give and receive love - however different that might look like - as it contributes to our health (vitality and longevity).

I provide a practice/mindset strategy to try on when you feel crappy, guilty, or shameful after eating. Sometimes quick fix advice can feel really unsupportive and demeaning. This practice provides an alternative to shallow advice and can help us get our needs met so we can move on from an experience. We discuss:
✨How to move from resistance to acceptance - working with (instead of against) our bodies.
✨ How to handle navigating negative thoughts about the body.
✨ How to reclaim our power by sifting through the things we “should” do, and discover the things we feel we “need” to do, ourselves.

Have you ever saved your calories, weight watchers points, or macros for later? On holidays especially we can find ourselves denying our bodies needs earlier in the day so that we can allow ourselves to eat more (or eat more fun foods) later. I explain why this thought system is detrimental by its perpetuating the restrict-binge cycle. I also explain how to end this compensating game with food, and movement too, so we can better honor the body and meet its needs.

I get personal on this episode as I talk about our family’s move into a new house my dad built for us. I highlight the importance of considering the physical space we live in as we work to hold the (metaphorical) space of others. We all have two aspects of ourselves we’re holding on to: the conditioning ( the shadowy parts of ourselves, the hard, triggersome stuff) and the vision we want for ourselves for the future. But in order to fully show up in the present and hold space for our own expansion, maybe we need to let some parts of us go. Parts of things we’ve tied to our identity, some of which might be rooted in diet culture, like in the ways we eat, dress, move, etc. What body and food “stuff” do you need to let go of to show up, right now, in the present moment, fully and completely you? And who do you see your future self to be, and the relationships they have with food and their body. Important questions to address for yourself as we sift together in this episode.

Join me for my first Q&A episode as I unpack a very important listener question about how to eat intuitively, and not deprive ourselves what we want, but still make healthy choices. We all, of course, want to be healthy. At the same time, sometimes we want unhealthy things! I unpack this question by talking about the difference between making healthy food choices and having a healthy relationship with food and how having a healthy relationship can lead to a very healthy life - fostering mental, physical, and emotional health.

We talk about how women, mamas and their children, are impacted by weight stigma and how the teachings of weight management in the name of “health,” backfire. Tune into Brook and Alyssa’s Podcast, Diet Riot (where I hop on and continue the conversation there as a guest next week!), learn about their intuitive eating group program, and visit them on their instagram sites @mama.and.me_rd (Alyssa), @nutrition.for.mamas (Brook)

So many are fearful or ashamed of weight gain correlated with changes due to the coronavirus. Having just tested positive, I speak on feeling triggered (fearful, anxious and overwhelmed with emotion) and how this impact is mental, emotional, and could very naturally be associated with weight gain. I discuss two polarizing reactions to the trigger (being covid), reflecting on how some desire to tighten control during this time while others “let go” (or detach) more. I then normalize possible weight by explaining how stress, greater access to food, the sense of deprivation of food, and the influx of our schedules, all trigger behaviors and bodily responses we might be aware or unaware of. By understanding triggers and our bodies' natural, protective responses to them, we might be able to arrive at a place of acceptance or neutrality pertaining to weight changes during this time.

What’s your current relationship with food like? In this episode, Alicia talks about different eating styles and how they differ from the mentality and practice of intuitive eating. Even with the best intentions of taking care of ourselves, Alicia describes how “The Careful Eater”, “The Professional Dieter”, and the four types of “Unconscious Eaters” struggle with their relationships with food and why. In this episode you’ll resonate with the different types of eating and find solace understanding the collective the difficulties of each, and you’ll also find hope and inspiration in how intuitive eating frees us from these difficulties by reestablishing trust in our bodies and their cues/sensations.

Food and body stuff can be triggering. It’s essentially why I started this show. However, before we get into any bigger concepts or deeper topics, I have to teach you about a framework called, “The Window of Tolerance” first introduced to me by Casey Berglund (founder of the Let Your Body Lead Professional Certification) and developed by Dr. Daniel Siegel. I define the concept’s three parts (hyperarousal, hypoarousal, and the window of tolerance) and guide you through feelings/body sensations associated with each. I then explain how we can widen our window of tolerance using Casey Berglund’s BODY acronym (as explained in her Tedx Talk here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh5nlYZcmFQ). Using the Window of Tolerance framework and Casey’s BODY acronym will help you process triggers regarding food and body insecurities and vulnerabilities and beyond into other life capacities too.

Join Natalie and I as we talk about intuitive eating and its impact on our self image, relationships, and the ways we navigate the changing and aging of our bodies. Natalie shares how she discovered intuitive eating after facing pregnancy complications, delivering two children, enduring an urgent cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), and finding herself dissatisfied in her body, battling voices in her head in the kitchen conflicted about what she should eat. At one point in the episode, Natalie explains how Isabelle Foxen Duke’s work and receiving clarity about women’s bodies from a health professional prompted her journey in intuitive eating. “Oh my gosh, my body is smarter than I am,” Natalie exclaimes. “My body is doing things without me knowing why or how, but it’s doing things to support me, not punish me, as it changes and ages.” Natalie shares how intuitive eating has helped her marriage and how she raises her children. At the end of the episode, Natalie shares key insights for women (two from Beauty Redefined who you can find on the web and on instagram) in feeling tension with their bodies and who struggle with perfectionism. The concept of intuitive eating can come across as unrealistic, laissez-faire, or even unhealthy. In this episode, I go below the surface to provide clarity on what intuitive eating (actually) is by taking you back to a time where you might have eaten intuitively without realizing it. Then, we discuss how encountering diet culture messaging may have prompted you to hop on a diet or change your body. We talk about how trusting in diets rather than our body’s cues/systems changes our relationship with food and leads to the cyclical dieting mentality and yo-yo dieting practices. We wrap up talking about how intuitive eating, and the unraveling of all the dieting messaging and dieting rules, can get us back to a place where we can reconnect with our inner intuitive eater and build trust with our bodies to guide us in determining what, when, and how much to eat again. “You didn’t fail the diet, the diet failed you” - Intuitive Eatingby Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, the pioneers of Intuitive Eating.

Alicia shares how she shifted her business from the dieting/intentional weight loss to the anti-diet/intuitive eating paradigm after she made the shift herself (discussed in episode 2). She talks about leaving her job in NYC to come home to Wisconsin and begin business working as a “woman’s health” dietitian, which morphed its way into, essentially, “women’s weight loss.” She reflects on the persistent challenges that her and her clients experienced in that work (including negative feelings towards the self and food). Once Alicia realized that she didn’t want to “prove” outcomes using dieting tools (like the scale, weighing food, etc.)and that she couldn’t be an advocate of weight loss AND intuitive eating simultaneously, she put a stop to everything and fundamentally restructured her business at the sacrifice of losing clients, income, and the ego associated with the RD credential that told her she “should be able to provide weight loss services.” She explains why she doesn’t regret that decision and encourages listeners to reflect on making the shift from dieting to intuitive eating too.

Alicia shares how the poor relationships she had food and her body growing up ultimately influenced her becoming the antidiet dietitian she is today. She shares details about her first encounters with negative body thoughts and trying on several diets, attempting to “fix” her overweight body and cure symptoms before being formally diagnosed with celiac disease just before college. She explains how the diagnoses prompted her getting “caught up in the spiral of restriction” as she began restricting other foods from her diet. She was picked up from college by her parents and put in an eating disorder treatment facility for anorexia where she says she officially hit “diet bottom.” Near the end of the episode she encourages listeners to assess how their relationship with food is impacting other areas of their life, using Casey Berglund’s “The Purpose Map” referred to as the purpose triangle in the episode. Alicia provides hope through the practice of intuitive eating for listeners who might be feeling the same way she did or struggling with the relationships they have with food and their bodies.
