Psychological flexibility is a key component of optimal living, resilience, and creative problem solving. Psychological flexibility offers us the skills to start living our lives now, instead of waiting for yucky stuff to go away. Traditional psychology tries to convince us that we have something that keeps us from living and doing the things we want, and that we need to get rid of that before we in engage in purposeful living. Psychological flexibility allows us to have “those things” AND live our lives, acting in the service of who or what’s important to us vs. acting to get rid of a problem that prevents purposeful living.
In this episode, I’ve got 3 activities that have helped me move my behavior analysis practice beyond autism, aggression, and billable hours to build the work I want while preventing burnout. I started this work in 2013, when I was still in a PhD program. I completed a meta-analysis and compiled a paper titled, “Beyond Autism and Aggression,” where I looked at research that took the field of applied behavior analysis outside of the traditional uses with autism and aggressive behaviors. I found some cool things and have worked hard since then to expand the work I do. These days, I coach and train on Psychological Flexibility for Creative Problem Solving with a focus on Time Management, Executive Functioning, and Social Emotional Learning (including trauma informed assessment and planning, adverse childhood experiences, burnout prevention and recovery, and resilience).

In Episode 6, Tina talks about what comes after the 2 loops of The ACT and ProSocial Matrix. Doing the first 2 loops is like creating the container for sorting the silverware….once the container is set, sorting can reduce the complexity and stuckness of a situation, promote psychological flexibility, and move towards creative problem solving.
