Since the beginning of the pandemic, there has been a boost in the usage of digital health services. Telemedicine can be a daunting concept for many, but it’s been proven to be incredibly beneficial throughout the pandemic. It allows doctors to see their patients virtually and gives more people access to healthcare. In today’s episode, Yusuf Henriques (our scientific advisor) will help us understand the benefits of digital health and why it's a significant force in the way we receive care.

Minority women have become increasingly disengaged with the medical community as more women have begun to speak out about their negative experiences. A recent study showed that medical professionals disregard the concerns of black women twice as often as their white counterparts. Today, Yusuf Henriques will help us understand why this is occurring.

January is Cervical Health Awareness month, which means IndyGeneUS AI is taking the initiative to drive health equity by shedding light on the disproportionate effect of cervical cancer on minority communities. Hispanic and Black women have the highest incidence rates of the 14,000 women in the United States diagnosed with cervical cancer yearly. The disease is preventable through a vaccine and screening. For that reason, health professionals have highlighted the importance of early detection- something that many minority communities might not be able to access.
The National Cervical Cancer Coalition actively supports women in coping with cervical cancer and helps spread awareness of their plight. Visit https://www.nccc-online.org/ if you or a loved one needs support or simply wants to help.

This week on the GeneUS Health Minute, we’re celebrating the life and legacy of Ms. Henrietta Lacks. In 1951, the young mother of five visited Johns Hopkins Hospital, in Baltimore Maryland, one of few hospitals that would treat poor blacks during that time. She learned that she had a deadly malignant tumor on her cervix, which took her life later that year. Today, just over seventy years since her death, her Hela-cells still lives on and has changed the trajectory of science forever.
Hosts, Yusuf Henriques and Angel Nicole share more details about Ms Henrietta Lacks in this podcast minute (4:00).
