We have been severely hurt at some point in our lives. Whether it’s a parent, a child, a spouse, or a close friend, we’ve all been wounded, betrayed, hurt. And many of us have been unable to totally forgive those people for what they’ve done. Wouldn’t you love to be able to sleep better, jump higher, and be like Jesus?! You say, “Yes! But, you don’t know what I’ve suffered! You don’t know what I’ve been through!” Well, the more you’ve suffered, the greater the blessing you have waiting for you this morning – the blessing of total forgiveness.

What we focus on, what we care about, is what we see. There are things in our lives we need to stop caring about. Because what we care about determines the course of our lives. It determines what we see and don’t see. It determines whether we walk toward death or life.
Our culture is dying because it cares about all the wrong things. Our churches are dying because we have cared about the wrong things. Therefore, Jesus, teach us to care … and not to care.

If I asked you the questions “Where have you come from? Where are you going?” How might you answer? Those are very important questions. Where we have come from gives others and gives ourselves a picture of who we are, and it will profoundly affect the way we live.

Satan doesn’t want us to discover who we are in Christ. He knows that if we were to learn how Jesus answers those questions: “Where have you come from?” and, “Where are you going?” the kingdom of darkness would be in serious trouble. In fact, darkness itself would become a thing of the past in our lives if Jesus shapes our identity instead of the world.

If you have ever heard the story of Beauty and the Beast, one of the lessons you learn is that love creates beauty. When everyone else sees only a beast, love looks closer and sees beauty. When everyone else sees a speck of ugliness and magnifies it, love finds the good and calls it out. Michelangelo, the famous Italian sculptor, painter, and poet, once stood before a great block of marble that had been rejected by builders and cast aside for its faults. As he examined the marble, a friend asked what he was looking at. Michelangelo responded, “An angel.” He was able to see the potential in that stone that everyone else missed. He saw the hidden beauty and bought it forth.

And that is exactly what God does with us. When He sees us, He doesn’t focus on our ugliness and sin, His eyes see the glory He is working in our lives! Paul wrote, “When Christ, who is your life appears, you also will appear with Him, glorious.” It isn’t a fairy tale, it’s real.

Paul writes about the fruit the Spirit is right now growing in your life. In John 15, Jesus calls our Heavenly Father a gardener. And if we allow Him to work, if we just cooperate, He grows a garden inside each of us for all the world to see and know that God is good.

And that is exactly what our world today needs. It doesn’t need another program, it doesn’t need another product or movement, what we really need is people who can stand in simplicity and manifest and declare the richness of Christ. And nothing on earth can begin to compete with that for human benefit

A little child brings so much of heaven into the world and teaches us about grace. In fact, Jesus said that children teach us how we as grown-ups are supposed to receive the kingdom of God.

I think it’s very true that our Heavenly Father comes to each one of us and says, “Dear precious child, I have been waiting for you before the beginning of time. Before heaven and earth were made, I had you on my mind. I am your Father. Don’t worry, because I’ll be taking care of you … I love you sooooo much! With love, God Almighty.”

There’s something about looking closely, intently, at Jesus and the love He has shown us that grips our heart and demands that we take Him seriously. And that is what Jesus invites each one of us to do today: to look at Him very closely and decide who He is going to be in our lives.

This story, our Scripture passage today, indeed our own experience demonstrate that it is very possible to come to church, to be in the presence of Jesus, to engage in religious activities without really taking Jesus seriously, without really making a connection with Him, without realizing how loving, how incredible, and how great He really is.

Are you a person who needs to hear the words of Jesus this morning: “Cheer up”? Are you someone who is known for being of good cheer, like Jesus? Do you generally have a smile on your face? Proverbs 15 says, “Smiling faces make you happy.” In other words, if you live with a smile on your face, it will help you cheer up!

Studies have found that even when we fake it, when we smile or laugh our body releases a chemical that makes us feel better! Other studies have found that how big we smile is a good predictor of how satisfied we are in life as well as how influential we are to others. Jesus knew that if His disciples were really going to make disciples of all nations, they needed to cheer up!

Do you know what the average attention span is today? Eight seconds. That’s shorter, by the way, than the attention span of a goldfish! People are still in fast pursuit of immediate results. Listen to these recent book titles I found: Thirty Days to a Better Life, Seven Days to a Brand New Me, Sixty-

Minute Marriage Builder. Still not fast enough to address your crisis? How about One-Minute Father, Sixty Seconds to Serenity, and Instant Sermons for Busy Pastors.

That is not how the spiritual life works. When it comes to following Jesus, starting is easy, but enduring, persevering, staying the course over a long period of time is hard. And without endurance, there is no blessing; without endurance, there is no reward; without endurance, there will be no fruit. The abundant Christian life is only found by those who set off after Jesus and encounter trials, run into problems, face opposition … but stay the course.

What goes into us has a direct effect on how we feel, how we think, how much energy we have, and how long we will live. And our souls work the exact same way. What we put into our minds and hearts determines the condition of our soul. We cannot expect to live with the joy, peace, and manifest blessing of God if we fill ourselves with spiritual junk food.

As we enter the new year, I want you to ask yourself, “If God were to give me a resolution this year, what would it be?” “What does God want me to aim my life at in 2021?”

As we begin to think about this, one question that might help us is: “What part of my life or my character doesn’t look like Jesus?” Then, “Am I willing to do what it takes to join God’s work in conforming me to the image of His Son?”

Luke 14:25-35

Now large crowds were going along with Him, and He turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27 Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who are watching it will begin to ridicule him, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build, and was not able to finish!’ 31 Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to face the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 Otherwise, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and requests terms of peace. 33 So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.

34 “Therefore, salt is good; but if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned? 35 It is useless either for the soil or the manure pile, so it is thrown out. The one who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

2 Corinthians 12:7–11 "Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me—to keep me from exalting myself! Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong. I have become foolish; you yourselves compelled me. Actually I should have been commended by you, for in no respect was I inferior to the most eminent apostles, even though I am a nobody."

So much of our energy goes into living a "good" life – trying to get people to like us, trying to get more stuff so we feel better about ourselves. And I want to say to you this morning that this whole thing is wrong. This is not who you are and it’s now who I am!

The One who made you is the only one who can truly answer this question of who you are. And do you know what He says? He says, “You are my chosen, beloved son. You are my chosen, beloved daughter. You are my treasured possession. And I have created you for glory.”

To each of us is given a garden. It is our life. And if we want to really live (and not just exist) we have to plant ourselves in God and eat, drink, and breathe in His life. If we want to stop the process of decay, we have to find a way to trust God and do what He says. So that His life will flow in us and through us … bringing beauty, grace, and joy.

Recently, a 262 foot long transparent bridge was constructed just below the surface of the Sea of Galilee, so that visitors can follow in the footsteps of Jesus – to enable people to walk on water. Lifeguards are on hand in case anyone strays from the path! But we want the real thing, don’t we? The world wants the real thing. The real thing is available to us.

Each one of us was created to actually follow in the footsteps of Jesus. We don’t have to be like everybody else; we have the potential … to be like Jesus. But if we want to be like Jesus, we have to be with Jesus.

Are you aware of what is going on in your soul right now? Are you aware of the condition of your soul? Jesus said the whole world is not as valuable as a single human soul; and that includes you. But most of our attention is spent on dust; the body… which is from the dust and to dust it will return. Do you know who else focused all their attention on externals? The Pharisees. But Jesus came to go much deeper; He came to make broken, dirty souls beautiful.
If your soul is functioning as it should you will be constantly refreshed and joyful in all you do. If you soul is functioning as it should, no external circumstance will be able to destroy your life. But if your soul is not functioning as it should, no external circumstance will be able to redeem your life.

When you hear the word “work” what thoughts and emotions do you have? Are they positive? Are they exciting? Are they restful? As Americans, the word we use to describe our work is “labor.” Well, Webster’s Dictionary defines labor as: “exertion which causes weariness.” We associate work with weariness. Do you feel weary today? That is a direct result of the fall. And today, God offers you a way out of your weariness.

Religious scholar, Martin Marty, wrote that in earlier American life, the minister was the most powerful and important person in the community. He could even arrest people and put them in jail. Even as recent as fifty years ago, pastors were regarded as the best educated and most competent people in town. And they generally were. They were often called upon by Washington DC to actually consult on government policy. Today, however, pastors are viewed in a much different light. So many pastors today find themselves in an almost impossible situation because they have been so attacked and torn down and they are not granted the authority God intends them to have. As a result, 70% of pastors today exhibit a damaged image of self. 75% of pastors today seriously consider leaving the church. Pastors are twice as likely to seek counseling as the general population. 80% of clergy believe pastoral ministry affects their families negatively. And for every 20 pastors who go into ministry, only 1 retires from the ministry. Pastors are the only hope for our situation today. They have the knowledge and the position given by God to make a difference and meet the desperate human need. If we would honor and support and uplift our pastors, our churches would once again become places of light and power and love that would transform our world.

It's been said a human being is like an iceberg, about a tenth of us is visible. And it’s in that invisible area that we want to do the work that will enable us to be transformed. Think of all the time you spend on your body – exercising, putting on makeup, eating, fixing your hair, picking out clothes, brushing your teeth. Imagine if you spent the same about of time on your soul.

Today, we have the opportunity to find new life for our souls. And we don’t want to miss it. Often, we think we are waiting for Jesus to work – to answer a prayer, to fix something, to change our circumstances. The truth is we are not waiting on Jesus, Jesus is waiting on us. He’s waiting for us to step into the newness of life He wants us to have.

German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote about the art of dying well. As the Nazi’s came to power, Bonhoeffer saw the church totally collapse. It disappeared. It failed to maintain any influence on society. Why? Bonhoeffer concluded that it was because the church didn’t know how to die. What was missing from the lives of Christians in Germany was the day to day reality of dying to self. He said “When Christ calls a man, He bids him come and die.” Have you learned the art of dying? Do you daily take up your cross and die to self? If we want to reclaim our identity as the church triumphant, this is the only way. If we want to turn the tide and overcome the wave of evil in our country and in our world it starts with me.

In Revelation, John looks forward to the time when Satan, the accuser of Christians, the one who leads the whole world astray, is hurled down from heaven. And John provides the blueprint for how this is done.

Being such materialists today, we may not be aware of the ways Satan has been working to accuse us and lead us astray. Satan was a very real figure in the Gospels. Jesus identified him, Jesus recognized Him, Jesus was very aware of the voice and presence of Satan throughout His life.

There’s a good chance we are not. So, we might want to reflect on the ways Satan has been accusing us and trying to lead us astray. How has Satan been attacking you? How has he been trying to scare you, discourage you, and shape your identity? If we want to overcome our enemy, we have to be able to correctly identify and recognize him.

Did you know that instead of running from failure, Jesus ran toward it? He did. He chose to spend the majority of His time in ministry around people He knew would reject Him. Jesus knew that a prophet has no honor in his hometown, and yet Jesus spent most of the second and third years of His ministry right around His hometown. Where people had no faith, where people didn’t believe Him, where people tried to throw Him off a cliff!

Jesus had incredible success in Samaria, many people believed Him! But today we are going to read about how Jesus left a place of incredible success and walked straight into a place He knew He would fail. Why? Because Jesus wanted to show us that life is not about chasing success. It’s about embracing failure and finding the love of the Father there. And that’s how we discover the greatest success.

The most important question we will ever answer is: “Who do you say I am?” (Matt. 16:15, Mark 8:29, Luke 9:20) Jesus asked His disciples this question during His earthly ministry. In those days, many thought that He was John the Baptist, Elijah or one of the prophets raised from the dead because that inexplicable miracle was easier to accept than the reality of God Himself. To acknowledge the reality of God’s Presence is to acknowledge that we were made to be dependent upon Him for all good things, and that our purpose is only ever satisfied in unconditional allegianceto the One who made us. This is why many resist acknowledging His reality, to claim their own limited sovereignty and proudly defend their own comfort. - Jesus places the same question before us today, and answering it is the chief purpose of our earthly existence: “Who do you say I am?” Every created soul is confronted by the inescapable decision to freely choose submission to God, or rebellion. Our answer will determine the nature of our purpose, identity and everlasting destiny.

As Christians, we have a simple job in life – to follow our leader, Jesus. If Jesus spent a lot of time in prayer, we too should spend a lot of time in prayer. If Jesus fasted, we too should fast. If Jesus was never in a hurry, then we should never be in a hurry! If all we do is watch Him, if all we do is hear Him, we can’t say we are followers of Jesus, can we? Now, we need to know a couple things about following Jesus: First, Jesus never begged anyone to follow Him. We have to decide if this is what we want. Second, often our biggest storms come when we follow His lead. So if we don’t want to be uncomfortable, if we don’t want to face anything difficult, we probably aren’t ready to follow Jesus. But here’s the third and perhaps most important thing we need to know: the safest place in the world to be is the place of following Jesus wherever He leads.

We might look at the evil and the brokenness in our world, the way the powerful in our world completely ignore God, and be tempted to despair. “What can I do to make a difference?! What can I do to bring about change?! I’m just a small voice in a vast, noisy world. I am just one person among billions.”

But Jesus is going to show us today the power of one small act of love. He’s going to teach us that the secret of ministry in the kingdom of God is that the greatest change comes from the tiniest of actions. Jesus is going to demonstrate that one small act can change a city.

God sees who we really are before we can see it ourselves. He knows I am not my anger; I am not my fear or my pride – those don’t shape my true identity. Therefore, His work in our lives is not about changing us into someone different, it’s about empowering us to become who we really are.

We are constantly tempted to base our identity on the great things we do. Jesus was tempted with this too: leap from the top of the temple, do something impressive so people will like you! But Jesus said, “I don’t need to do something impressive. I am loved by God, and that is enough.”

In His ministry, Jesus encountered person after person who could not see what was write in front of their face. They were blind. Nicodemus couldn’t see the kingdom of God; all he could see was another teacher. The Samaritan woman at the well couldn’t see the Messiah standing in front of her. And because she couldn’t see, she lived with an unsatisfied heart. But Jesus came to bring sight to the blind. He came to give us glasses so that a blurry world would become clear. He came to bring vision so a hazy world becomes beautiful and alive.

We read in the book of Samuel (18:1) that, “The soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David.” Sadly, as American Christians we have bought the lie society has fed us that other things are more important in life than this. A lie that says, “Jonathan would have been smarter to let his friendship with David go so he could ascend to the throne.” And so we break off friendships for the smallest of things. We put the pursuit of wealth, power, and comfort far above even the thought of pursuing deep, meaningful friendship with others.

Did you know one of the best predictors for not finishing well as a person … is isolation as a way of life? If you want to finish well, if you want to have a lasting impact on our world, if you want to really make a difference, you will do whatever it takes to develop deep, meaningful friendships in the family of God.

In the last two months, our country has been dealing with fear concerning the spread of Covid-19. This fear has been propagated by some sections of society as a way of controlling the American citizens. And, it has worked, because deep fear has gripped many people – in and out of the church, and has probably had some level of effect on everybody throughout the United States during these last two months.

However, what does the Bible say about this or any fear? Actually, the Bible clearly indicates more than 350 times that Christians should not be afraid, irrespective of the circumstances. These exhortations are throughout both the OT and NT.

In the midst of a society decimated by the Black Death, suffering the economic effects of disastrous harvests and undergoing major political upheaval resulting in crippling taxation, Julian of Norwich wrote that Jesus said to her: “All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.”

This is the blessed assurance we have in Jesus. What would it take for you to live with absolute peace and deep joy today? What would it take for you to live with the unmovable attitude and spirit … that all shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well?

All of us have gone through a pretty difficult trial lately, haven’t we? We may not have lost any limbs, but we have at least been cut off from one another. Thankfully, as far as I know, we are all still physically healthy, but I’m sure this quarantine has at least challenged our mental and emotional health.

And what if in the midst of this challenging time, instead of giving into our pride, instead of becoming more self-reliant, we turned William Ernest Henley’s poem around and cried out to God, “It matters how straight the gate how charged with punishments the scroll, You are the captain of my fate, You are the master of my soul.” In other words, “It doesn’t matter how hard things get, it doesn’t matter how painful or difficult life becomes, Jesus, You are in charge … and I surrender to Your will.”

When it comes to things you can’t control, are you able to say, “God, not my will, but Yours be done?”

Jesus wasn’t in a hurry to get a bunch of stuff done; He just wanted to get to know His friends. I think He wanted to teach them what matters most. He wanted them to understand that following Him is not about wonderful, exciting events … it’s about knowing Him.

Nothing else in all the world is more important than this. Interaction with God … is eternal life. And if we are with Jesus, spending time with Him, everything in our lives is taken care of.

God sees invisible viruses eating away at the beautiful eternal people He created for glory all throughout the world. He sees one person’s life being destroyed by the disease of fear. Another held back by the infection of pride. One over here overrun by the sickness of lust. And one here devastated by self-righteousness. And He says, “All you have to do is step into the Light. Get up, walk over to me, and let my Light heal your disease. Set your pride aside, stop letting fear run your life, stop trying to fix yourself, come into my Light.”

I don’t know if you’re aware, but the word “Corona” is Latin for “crown”. It was given this name because when viewed under a microscope it looks like a crown! This weekend we celebrate Jesus coming to earth to wear a thorny crown for us. He took the plague of every evil upon Himself … so that we might be raised from the dead.

And He stands alive in the very air around us right now, ready to raise us up and empower us to overcome every evil thrown our way – from the coronavirus, to the disease of death and sin, to the virus of our own selfishness. He has conquered every evil we face! And He has come to infect us with His powerful new life!

With President Trump encouraging Americans to avoid crowds of ten or more people, we have decided to cancel our Sunday morning worship service for the time being. In its place is a shorter service with songs of worship, prayer, and a devotional message. I encourage you to listen, pray for one another, and continue to reach out to support and encourage one another.

A recent survey of 2,000 Americans found that the average adult will wake up in a bad mood 300 times a year. That means that on average we will only have 65 good mornings all year! Six days every week we will wake up on the wrong side of the bed. And friends, that is not how life in the kingdom of God is meant to be. If we are truly experiencing the life God wants us to have in His kingdom, 365 days a year we will wake up with the attitude that, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” And the people around us will say, “I want what he or she has.”

The issue of abortion is often seen as a purely political one, because sadly it is engaged almost exclusively in the political arena. But God ordains all truth as His and, to those who say politics has no place in the pulpit, I say any power to affect change that the church ignores, will be forfeit to the world of darkness.

Too many professed Christians today live as if God is our servant instead of us being His. Too many professed Christians today live as if the church is their servant instead of us being servants of the church.

Therefore, I think it needs to be said: Ask not what God can do for you – ask what you can do for God. Furthermore: Ask not what your church can do for you – ask what you can do for your church!

Do you know that the kingdom of heaven is here, now? Every serious Bible scholar will tell you that the primary theme of Jesus’ teaching was the kingdom of heaven. One professor and Christian author I read made the statement that, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” … was Jesus’ first and only real sermon point. Matthew indicates Jesus proclaimed it every time He spoke.” And He didn’t take it back when He ascended; it’s still here.

As a result, most people walk down that road pursuing happiness. And if I stay on that road I will never be good, and I’ll never be happy. You would have a hard time finding one single person in the history of humanity who has found happiness by chasing it.

Once we come to the realization of who we are, the beloved sons and daughter of God, we need to find a way for that to take root in our hearts and minds. If this would happen, we would stop worrying about our day and start it in giddy anticipation of the wonderful gifts our Father is going to bring into our lives. Imagine walking through 2020 listening to the voice of our Heavenly Father saying to us, “I have a gift for you today, and I can’t wait for you to see it!” That is the life Jesus wants us to have. That is life itself. That is life as the precious one of God that each one of us truly is.

The famous saying in Alcoholics Anonymous is: “I’m not God.” With that, a huge burden lifts off. But we know from experience how hard this is to actually do. Not to agree with; to do. God is still waiting for us to decide to hand the world over to Him.

This one act would completely revolutionize our lives. If we handed the world over to God we would discover the easy yoke of Jesus. And we would finally be able to lie down and sleep at night. We would be set free from our stress. We would see and experience all of the wonderful gifts God has given us today.

In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus gave us both a command: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Jesus made it clear in this and many other passages, that while He wants to give us the gift of salvation, He expects those of us who have accepted His gift to share the Gospel, His “Good News” with others who have yet to take advantage of His eternally generous offer.

We live in a world that is constantly trying to shape our identity. It tells us lies. It says things like: “You are what you have.” “You are what you do.” “You are what people think of you.” It shouts things such as: “You are no good; you are not enough; you haven’t done enough; you are nobody.” The message of Christmas is that because Jesus came to earth, I too can be God’s beloved child.

Because Jesus came to earth, I too can hear the Father say, “You are my beloved child; with you I am well pleased.” If we trust Jesus, He gives us the right to become beloved children of God.

Christians in America have been saying, “No” to Jesus. He is continually asking each one of us to be a witness for Him and we have refused. We’ve said “no”. And because we have said “no”, the world continues on in darkness. And what we have this Christmas is an opportunity to say, “Yes.” “Yes, I’ll shine the light. Yes, I’ll spread the Word. Yes, I’ll be who You have called me to be.”

If you want to find Jesus, the light of the world this Christmas, all you have to do is know what to remove and remove it. You just have to know what to get out of the way and get it out of the way. A thousand things will clamor for your attention, a thousand things will call for your time, and unless you are willing to remove the clutter, eliminate all the extra stuff you will not find the Light of the World that is shining in the dark. And the only way you will encounter Jesus is if you practice the art of elimination and make room for Him.

Our culture, our instincts and our hearts, clamor for the preservation of our own life at all costs – over every other life – and over any good we might do. “Save yourself!” is the golden motto of our supremely selfish nature. Absent any higher purpose, it is supposed that there is no greater good beyond the perseveration of the self.

As believers, we trust Christ to save us from our sins, but do we trust Him to save us from ourselves? We all are given by God the same weapon of life; how we use it will determine our kingdom and our destiny.

People used to praise God by giving Him burnt offerings. They would burn up things that were valuable – incense, first fruits, animals that were their livelihood – and Scripture said it was a pleasing aroma to God. It smelled good! But there were also times when the smell of God’s people turned foul. Because their hearts and their lives were no longer full of genuine praise, it was like rotten milk! And God was repelled by His people – their smell made Him sick! Paul talks about us being an aroma to God. And my question for you is this: How do you smell?

Are you waiting for God to do something? Is there anything you have been praying for God to do for months, years, even decades? My guess is there is. Are you waiting patiently for that to happen?

Habakkuk writes that he will wait patiently for Israel’s pagan invaders to be judged. And this changes everything in his life. He receives this news that makes his heart pound, lips quiver, and legs tremble. But then he makes a decision. He says, “I will wait patiently on God.” And because of this, instead of being fearful, Habakkuk has joy. Instead of being downcast or disheartened, Habakkuk finds strength! What’s his secret? A patient heart.

20th century French playwright, Samuel Beckett, wrote a play in which the curtain opens to show a stage littered with junk. And for 30 long seconds, the audience sits and stares at that junk. And then the curtain closes. That’s it. Beckett was saying that our lives are like that. We are surrounded by junk; garbage. And that’s all we can hope for. And that’s what the world is like if there is no God. We are surrounded by ugliness. Life is a constant struggle. It is sad, hopeless, and empty.

But in our passage today, Paul is going to take a good look at the church and say: “That’s how some of you are living.” Paul’s going to say: “There are people in the church who live as if they are surrounded by ugliness; they live without hope in their hearts; they live as if they are alone.” They profess a relationship with Jesus but they live like atheists, they don’t really love Jesus. And because of this, they’re cursed. They’re separated from the complete sufficiency, the overwhelming goodness, the abundance of love and joy that is available in God.

Tt’s easy to sit and listen. But if that’s all we do, we’ll never grow. What’s hard is getting out there and doing what God has told us to do. It’s easy to hear about spiritual gifts, but it's hard to get out there and use them. That’s scary! That’s outside of my comfort zone! But that’s the only way we grow. And a faith that requires no courageous action, a faith that never requires you to step out of your comfort zone is not a faith that opens the door to the kingdom of God; it’s a faith that closes the door to the kingdom of God.

In our passage today, Paul says that we are like little seeds. We’re pretty small. We don’t look all that impressive. This little seed doesn’t appear glorious at all. That is, unless you bury it in the ground. Bury this tiny seed in the dirt and what is it that soon bursts forth? A plant thousands of times the size of that seed, full of flowers with breathtaking color, beauty, and glory.

And that is a tiny picture of what soon will happen when our bodies are buried in the ground if we are in Christ. Just as you can’t see the full glory of what is contained in this seed until it is buried in the ground, you can’t see our full glory now. But once we are buried, the glory of who we really are through Jesus will be revealed. A glory thousands of times greater than what you can see right now; full of breathtaking beauty, power, and light.

A recent World Health Organization report called noise pollution a modern plague. Real silence today is hard to find. Recent research has found that spending time in silence causes new cells to grow in our brain. Silence lowers blood pressure, boosts the body’s immune system, promotes good hormone regulation, prevents plaque formation in arteries, and lowers stress.

And to go even deeper, it is in the silence that we discover our soul … and it is in the silence that we find God. Habakkuk 2:20, “The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him."

The human brain is millions of times more powerful than the most powerful supercomputer that exists today and it is also vastly more efficient. Each thought we have can actually change the structure and function of our brains. When you create new memories you physically change your brain.

And wherever your brain goes, the rest of your life goes. If your mind is set on love, your body will follow suit. If your brain is filled with worry and fear and selfishness, you will live a fearful, worried, self-centered life. If your mind loses contact with God, your body follows.

And that is why when Jesus came He focused on changing the ideas and thoughts that fill people’s minds. The word “repent” is a word that literally means: Change the way you think. Jesus saw a world of people perishing because of the way they thought.

For years, popular musicians have attempted to answer the question: “What is love?” There are over 10,000 songs on file at the U.S Copyright Office that begin with the words, “Love is …” Examples include: From 1912, “Love is a Sickness Full of Woes”; from 1927, “Love is Like the Influenza”; from 1968, “Love is Psychedelic”; from 1988, “Love is for Suckers”; and from 2007, “Love is a Losing Game”.

As we read this description of agape love in our passage today, we might feel as if we are playing a losing game – that this is impossible, I will never be like this. Well, I want to start this morning by letting you know that you were created to love like this. Jesus loved you into existence so that you could be as wonderful as Him – full of His love. And if Jesus has His way, it will happen.

Imagine waking up in the morning and realizing, “Only one thing really matters today – loving other people. And if this is all I do – if I don’t get to the laundry, if I don’t get to clean the house, if I don’t finish my job at work – but I love the people around me, I have done what really matters.”

And on the other hand, if I do all that other stuff, if I run all my errands and accomplish all the tasks set before me, but I haven’t loved the people around me … I haven’t accomplished anything of value. In the eyes of God, all my work has been worthless. Did you know that?

Today, Paul is going to say to us: Love plus nothing equals everything. And if we would commit ourselves to learning how to do this one task, nearly all the problems we face in society would disappear.

A physiologist and former British Olympian has unveiled a blueprint for what he describes as the world's ultimate superhuman. It includes the acceleration of Usain Bold’s legs (whose fast-twitch muscle fibers can accelerate faster than 99.9% of people), the lungs of British rower Steve Redgrave (whose seven-liter capacity means he can take in a third more oxygen than the average person), the brain of “human calculator” Scott Flansburg (who can add numbers faster than a real calculator), the vision of Veronica Seider (able to distinguish detail from up to a mile away, her sight is 20 times better than the average human), the ears of Daniel Kish (able to navigate his environment by measuring the echo response of clicks made by his tongue), and the voice of Georgia Brown (whose vocal range spans 8 octaves).

Well, God is assembling a body greater than that right here – the superhuman body of Christ! A body that has been gifted with such things (as we talked about last week) as: miraculous powers, prophecy, mountain-moving faith, healing power, life-giving mercy, and wisdom from another world. And if you are a follower of Jesus, you are part of that superhuman body.

Are you acutely aware of the spiritual world? I want to say to you this morning that the reason Jesus was able to perform so many miracles, the reason so many people flocked to Him, the reason He was able to change our world forever is that He lived, thought, worked, and taught in the power of the same Spirit of God that is available to us.

It was not because He was also fully God. When Jesus came to Earth He veiled His divine glory, He emptied Himself in order to not just be our Savior but our example as well. While living on Earth, Jesus used His divine powers infrequently, if at all. The reason His life had such far-reaching power is that Jesus lived in complete dependence upon the same Spirit of God available to us.

Have you been neglecting the gift of the Spirit of God in your life?

In C.S. Lewis’ “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe”, two of the main characters, Susan and Lucy, hear about Aslan, the Christ-figure in the story. They as if he is a man. And they are told: “Aslan a man? Certainly not…. he is the King of the woods … Aslan is a lion – the Lion, the great Lion.” “Ooh!” said Susan. “Is he quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous meeting a lion.” “That you will … and make no mistake, if there’s anyone who can appear before Aslan without their knees knocking, they’re either braver than most or else just silly.” “Then he isn’t safe?” asked Lucy. “Safe? Who said anything about being safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good.”

Most people don’t want such a dangerous God. They prefer a god who is safe. A god they can manage. And we have to decide: Do I want the real thing?

Because if even some of us actually want the real thing, the tangible presence of God that is not safe will be manifest among us today.

If I wanted to have light in a dark room, my faith in the light switch would cause me to walk over to it and flip it on. Receiving the light of Jesus happens the exact same way. Because of my faith in Him, I walk right up to Jesus and ask for His light to turn on in me.

Do you have the faith to believe that Jesus can do that for you today?

God made men and women very different. We have been given different roles. And the process of bringing us together, in marriage and in the church, can cause sparks. This was causing sparks in the Corinthian church, causing division and confusion. And that is Satan’s main goal today: to drive the people of God apart.

Right now, Satan is working in our relationships, our marriages, our church to drive us apart; to keep us from being one. He knows that if the people of God come together in their marriages and in their churches … it’s over. He has nothing that can stand against a united church. If we actually learn to live as one, as God is one, in our churches and in our homes, no force in hell or on earth could stand against us.

When Paul looked at the Corinthian church, he saw a group of self-centered people. They knew they needed Jesus for the forgiveness of sins, but their minds were still dominated by one thought: me.

And that is the one source of human brokenness – self-centeredness; self-will. When you bring a group of people together who are almost exclusively focused on themselves, there’s going to be quarreling and fighting and hurt feelings and broken people. That is the church.

Paul gives a warning to the church. It’s a warning we really shouldn’t need, but we do. We should have learned this lesson by looking at people throughout the history of our faith, but we haven’t. The warning is this: Being a child of God is not about rituals … it is not about experiences … it’s not about infrequent, scattered times of devotion to God. Being a child of God is about a long obedience in the same direction. A long obedience in the same direction. We don’t go one direction Sunday morning and a different direction Friday night. It’s not about occasional acts of obedience scattered throughout the year. Can it be said that my life is a long obedience in the direction of Christ? Click here to download the sermon outline

I want to invite you to be honest with yourself about what’s really going on inside. What is the truth? Do you feel close to God, or does He feel far away? Are prayer and worship exciting, or do they feel dry? So much of our services and our prayer lives are devoted to pretending everything is fine. But when we are honest with God we give Him something solid to work with. Truly, I think, He appreciates honest questions and laments much more than fake praise.

Many Christians find themselves asking: “Where are the rivers of living water? Why am I not experiencing the abundant life Jesus talks about? Why do I struggle so much to grow?” If you find yourself there today don’t run from it. Don’t try to cover it up. Don’t try to act like you’re doing better than you actually are. That’s what Satan wants us to do. Let’s be real and honest about how we’re doing.

At this stage we are in the grip of a great temptation: to despair and tune out; to act out immorally; or to try to use service, ministry, or good works to relieve the burden of guilt and shame we are experiencing.

Do we claim the name of Jesus, but then when you look at our lives we don’t live anything like Jesus?

Very few Christians today talk about their relationship with Jesus with people in the world. It’s almost as if we’re embarrassed about it. We don’t think it’s appropriate. So, we keep quiet. In fact, a recent Barna study found that almost half of millennial Christians (in their twenties and thirties) say that sharing your faith with others is (are you ready for this?) wrong. They don’t say it’s hard, awkward, or uncomfortable; they say it’s wrong!

What would it take for you to join Christians throughout the world and Christians throughout history who refused to be quiet about their faith in Jesus? We have the same power they have – the same Spirit of God is living inside us. The decline of Christianity in America can be reversed … if the people of God choose to live as His witnesses today.

The American church is crumbling. Our influence in society is fading. Our light is growing dim. We are full of holes, breaking down, and desperately in need of repair. If we were to take a survey today about what the American church needs most, we would receive a myriad of answers – more outreach, better preaching, collaboration and unity, correct doctrine, more creative programs. Well, Paul today sums it all up in one word: love. Love builds the church of God.

Our world talks a lot about peace. It’s a popular slogan in songs and on TV. If it’s not about Jesus, it’s all a sham. John Lennon famously sang, “Give peace a chance.” Well, John abandoned his son, Julian, when he was five years old. Listen to what Julian said about his dad: “He was a hypocrite. Dad could talk about peace and love to the world, but he could never show it to the people who supposedly meant the most to him: his wife and son. How can you talk about peace and love and have a family in bits and pieces-no communication, adultery, divorce? You can't.” Peace comes only in the presence of God. And that peaceful presence is available to us in our homes – whether we are living alone or married with kids.

there is a significant part of the church that is blind and deaf to the spiritual world. They act as if the Spirit of God is not active and living inside them. They live as unspiritual Christians. Therefore they experience a life of lack. But if we are alive to the Spirit of God, even the secular world is starting to realize the incredible benefits we receive. Recent research in England has concluded that people who have a spiritual side are less likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, or exhaustion. Being aware of the spiritual world brings energy, peace, and hope.

We’re long on programs and performance and techniques – we have too many of them and they get in the way! Where are the people who are walking in the fullness of the Spirit of God today? And all we have to do is fall in love with Jesus and trust the Spirit of God and it will happen – lives will be changed, people will be drawn in – because there’s nothing on earth that can compare or compete with the Spirit of God alive in His people.

There are incredible parallels between the first century church in Corinth to which Paul wrote this letter we will be studying and the church in America. First century Corinth was a very wealthy and prosperous place. America is wealthy and prosperous. But the church in Corinth was in trouble and so is the church in America. Somewhere around 8,000 churches die in the United States every year. That means 150 will die this week. Less than 20% of Americans attend church on a regular basis. Studies show that like the Corinthians, when it comes to morality, we are indistinguishable from the world. And we are paying the price.

There are incredible parallels between the first century church in Corinth to which Paul wrote this letter we will be studying and the church in America. Somewhere around 8,000 churches die in the United States every year. That means 150 will die this week. Less than 20% of Americans attend church on a regular basis. We must do something. We must act. And that is the challenge before us today as we close our study in the book of Exodus. Now that we’ve read all of these wonderful words, we each have a choice: Will I put into practice the things I have learned? Am I willing to do something out of the ordinary to reach heights I haven’t reached before? Will I allow this to make a difference in my life … or will I just sit there?

Our face is where our soul is displayed. The way you see the condition of a person’s soul is by looking at their face. So if Jesus is filling my soul, people will look at me and see the light of Christ! My face will shine with the radiance of His presence!
And God has uniquely placed you and me in specific places, at this specific time to be His light in this dark world! And no one else is going to take your place. This is your day! This is your time! Don’t say, “I’ll do it tomorrow.” Jesus didn’t say, “You will be the light of the world,” He said, “You are.” So, are you living a radiant life?

Do you live with a regular sense of the presence of God? A presence you actually feel? A presence others around you recognize? We talk in the church about being full of the Spirit, about Jesus always being with us, but I’m not sure we really understand what it would mean to walk around with the second person of the Trinity by our side and the third person of the Trinity filling us up. Do you think anything as tremendous as the Holy Spirit could be in you and go unnoticed?
As I read through the Scriptures I find that when a people is inhabited by God you can see it, you can hear it, and at times you can even feel it. When this presence comes into the midst, the fire breaks out and people are changed. And I have decided that I want this presence in my life. Because I believe God stands ready to fill our lives in such a way that others who are willing to see will recognize it as the manifest presence of Jesus and His Spirit in our bodies

Our passage today speaks of the rampant sin of God’s people. It’s so bad that God plans to destroy them all and start over with Moses. But Moses decides to intercede on behalf of his people. He goes to God and asks Him to change His mind. He prays, “Don’t destroy these people! Forgive their sins! Lead them to a good future!” And because of one man’s intercession, because of one man’s prayers, the fate of many is changed.

Our habits actually shape our brains. The more we engage in certain acts, the deeper the neural pathways in our brains associated with those acts become – like making deeper tire tracks in the road. So that eventually our brains naturally go to those thoughts and actions over and over again. That’s incredibly good news if we have good habits! But it can be so debilitating if we have bad habits. And if that’s us, we need to know that as deep as those tracks might be in our brain, they can be changed! We can develop new tracks in our brains by changing our habits. And this is where we must work as Christians. God has given us a path to freedom and transformation. He has designed our bodies in such a way that it is possible to replace our habits of sin with habits of righteousness, our habits of fear with habits of peace, our habits of worry with habits of joy! So that we actually take on the mind and character of Christ!
But are we willing to change our habits

I’ve heard it said that doing nothing is probably the hardest thing you’ll ever do. You probably feel guilty if you do nothing. Am I right? But unless we are able to regularly disconnect from the world we will not hear God’s voice. And our souls will suffer.
Because we live in a world in ruins. Paul describes the mind caught up in the world as futile, full of things that don’t matter, darkened, and blind. And if we don’t learn to withdraw from the world to listen to God we are going to find ourselves completely caught up in the futile thinking of the world.
But if we will stop and do nothing … simply sit quietly before the Lord … the influence of the world on our hearts and minds will collapse … as the mind of Christ comes in.

Today the world is doing everything it can to create space between us and Jesus. It tells us that it’s okay to follow Him, as long as we don’t follow too close. Don’t bring Him into your workplace, your school, or your neighborhood. You can go to church, but don’t turn this into a full-time thing. And many Christians today have given in and have chosen to follow Jesus at a distance.
I want to say to you this morning that all of the evils you see in human life come from people keeping their distance from God. Israel’s first and ultimate failure in the Old Testament was their refusal to remain close to God. This one thing led to their downfall, misery, and destruction. And far too many Christians are going down that same road.
Today, He wants to pull you close to His heart. He wants to embrace you and give you a bear hug that you receive in faith. He wants you to know the joy of His embrace, and never leave His side. So that you walk through the ups and downs of life arm in arm with Jesus.

Social historians write that after WWI in America, advertisers shifted from simply conveying product information to manufacturing desire. Marketing moved from fulfilling needs to creating them. And today we are constantly bombarded with images and messages telling us we need more.

And Jesus knows how we can be totally free from all of that. Jesus knows how to lead us into a life where we honestly say, “I don’t need 10% more. I don’t need 35oz more. I have everything right now.”

Lies are Satan’s only hope. If you were to remove all lies from our society, the kingdom of evil would disappear. If you were to remove the truth, our society would destroy itself … and Satan knows it. That’s why he is working overtime to mock, discredit, and ridicule the truth. And many people today are just fine living in a world of lies. And this is where we the people of God must take a stand … to no longer tolerate falsehood or little white lies. We must decide that we are going to be people who seek the truth … live in the truth … embrace the truth … whether it makes us feel good or not … whether it’s convenient or not.

Think about all Paul had been through – imprisonments, floggings, near-death experiences again and again. He was repeatedly whipped, beaten, shipwrecked, and in danger. He faced sleeplessness, real hunger and thirst; at times he had no shelter and even no clothes. And through it all, he discovered a secret our world does not understand – how to be content. What kind of man was this? Was he living in the real world? The truth is: he was living in the most real world. And we can too. But like Paul, we do not learn this secret overnight. We will not learn it if we run from uncomfortable situations. We will not learn it if we build our lives around material things; if we think the secret to our happiness is one more pleasure, one more dollar, one more thing.

Did you know that 25% of all web searches are for pornography? 25%. The revenues of the porn industry in the U.S. are bigger than the NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball combined, and that’s just the stuff that’s reported. 70% of men aged 18-24 visit porn sites every month, and 1 in 3 porn users are women. And Christians are just as guilty, with a recent Barna study found that 64% of Christian men and 15% of Christian women admit to viewing pornography at least once a month. Today I will be addressing the elephant in the room that the church has been largely unwilling to address – the rampant pornography and infidelity among Christians. Many of Christianity’s greatest men have struggled in this area – from Augustine to Thomas Aquinas to Paul himself. Yet Jesus has shown in each of these cases that He is stronger and able to conquer the problems of infidelity and lust. And today He wants to lead every person who is allowing even a hint of sexual promiscuity to remain in their lives … to freedom and new life.

Often, in trying to prove the superiority of Jesus, we focus on the fact that only Jesus rose from the dead. And that’s true. But deeper still, only Jesus lived and died with a selfless and sacrificial love for everyone. And the historical power of Jesus comes from the fact that not only did He live a life of sacrificial, joyful love, He can enable others to do the same. And that’s the good news – that you and I can be born into a brand new life of love that nothing in all the universe can stop or stand against. Not the wickedness of men, the cruelty of life, not even death itself can stop such a life! It will overcome every barrier placed in its way – it will overcome every suffering, evil, and death. It will endure. The only question for us is: Do we want to be possessed by this kind of love? Do we want to be filled to the brim with a love that neither death nor life, angels nor demons, nor anything else in all creation can overcome?

There is a deep desire within all of us to enjoy a long, healthy life. We don’t want our lives to end. But despite all of our best efforts and billions of dollars spent, our world has not been able to unlock the secret to a longer life. I have found the answer. It has been in God’s word all this time as plain as day. And I’m going to share it with you this morning. God Himself has given us a surefire way to enjoy not only a longer life but a rich, abundant life that never ends. And it doesn’t require you to eat bland food, organic food, or low-calorie food. You don’t have to buy a book or have a lot of money. Believe it or not, it’s actually enjoyable. The only requirement is that we honor other people, starting with our parents. God says that if we choose to do this we will enjoy a long, abundant life. But as so many people today are willing to reorganize their schedules, their finances, and the way they live for all those failed strategies to add years to their lives, are we willing to do things God’s way for a guaranteed path to a blessed eternal life?

Exodus 20:8-11 8 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Wrong ideas about God will destroy our lives. Wrong ideas about God poison relationships, homes, and churches. I’ve heard it said that all human troubles come from thinking of God wrongly. How we think about God is not just an intellectual matter. It’s a matter of the kind of people we become. It’s a matter of what we commit ourselves to in life. It determines our character, it determines our attitude, it determines our habits. And that’s why one of the most important things to God is that we think about Him correctly as He really is. That’s why when Jesus came, He essentially said, “Forget everything you think you know about God, I’m going to tell you what He’s really like.” And we might realize this morning that we actually haven’t spent a lot of time looking into what God is really like. Maybe it’s time for us to get serious about knowing God. Because I’m here to tell you this morning that the better we know God the better our lives will be.

The most important things in life are in fact not visible – love, friendship, knowledge, belief, truth, real beauty, (here’s one for the scientists out there) mathematics, Satan (who’s pretty important), and finally the most important thing of all – God. And if our attention is focused on the visible world, if our hearts are given to material things, we will be disconnected from reality and we will end up turning away from our wonderful, invisible God. Therefore, we have a choice (it’s probably the most important choice we have): will I focus on the seen or the unseen in my life? Will I live for things I can see, or things that are hidden? Will I work for the visible or the invisible? This one question will determine our attitudes, our actions, and ultimately our destiny in life. And God calls us today into a life in His invisible kingdom that is in fact more real than anything we can see.

I want you to know this morning that Jesus is very literally standing outside the door of our church. And the prize He is offering is a special fellowship with Him we do not now have. One where all the treasures of His kingdom are ours. Perhaps you feel as if you’re on the other side of the door when it comes to experiencing the joy, peace, and power of Jesus in your life. You’ve read about it. You’ve seen it described. And you’ve tried to use conventional methods to get it. You go to church. You pray before meals. You attend Bible Study. But it still feels as if it’s on the other side of the glass. He stands out there knocking. He stands out there calling our name. And the question for us is: How bad do we want to open that door? Are we willing to think outside the box? Are we willing to use methods most people aren’t willing to use? Are you willing to do whatever it takes to have that special fellowship with Him?

I want to talk about the fact that male or female, young or old, rich or poor, we have a God that truly is sufficient for all seasons, all situations, all circumstances. We have one God who can create, sustain, provide, strengthen, encourage, and bless – He does it all. And He is all we need, no matter what we face. And we have even more. Because not only do we have the god of money, the god of success, the god of reputation, the god of pleasure, and the god of family, we have millions of people who live to please and honor themselves. Millions of people who live trusting themselves. Millions of people who serve the god or goddess of self. I’m going to assume that most of you would say that God is first in your life. So my question for you now is: What’s number two? Would you shout out your answers? My number two is: self. Whatever number two is the biggest threat to number one. And that’s the first thing we need to lay down. And if we are willing to do that, we will find that God is the only One we need. We have a God great enough to handle every situation we face. And He wants to be our one God for all seasons.

I want you to know that there is a direct relationship between strange things … and holy That’s actually what holy is: something different, something not of this world. And today I want to rework this idea of holiness that has unfortunately been turned into something that even people in the church don’t find all that desirable. To be holy is to be different. It is to be not of this world. It is to be strange. Peter said we are strangers in this world. And if we take holiness seriously, I assure you, we will see strange things happening in our lives. Because strange things don’t just happen in Bible times or in the movies; strange things happen in people who live strange, different lives, as though possessed by a supernatural force.

John 5:16-27 16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him. 17 Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.” 18 For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. 19 Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. 24 I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. 25 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.”

I want to say to you that even though building character doesn’t always feel great, this is the most important thing in life. The most important thing about your life is developing the character of Christ. The only thing you’re going to take with you into eternity is your character. What kind of character do you have? Looking at our media today – our movies and TV shows – and you get the idea that most people think that to live with good character would be pretty boring and dull. Imagine a TV series called, “Breaking Good” instead of “Breaking Bad.” “Miami Virtue” instead of “Miami Vice.” People are drawn to evil, excited by it. Even people in the church. The Christian Church will never be the light of our word until ordinary individuals just like you and me, through God’s grace, take on the loving, joyful, and powerful character of Christ. All of creation is waiting for us to do so. And this is possible for you and for me.

We have a theology in the American church today that makes us passive. We have a theology that makes us consumers. We have a lot of spectators who are not engaged in this fight. And God is going to say to us in our passage today that we cannot just sit back and expect Him to do everything. He won’t. Such an attitude will not lead to victory in life. Each of us has a responsibility. Each of us has been called to act. We have each been called to the battle field by our King. Paul called us to offer our bodies to our King as weapons of righteousness; to fight the good fight. It is time for us to stand up and fight for the kingdom of God against the powers of this dark world!

When we don’t get enough rest we become more susceptible to illness, our heart suffers, our cancer risk increases, our brain does not function properly, our memory suffers, our libido is diminished, we gain weight, we don’t smile as often, we put ourselves at risk for high blood pressure, and we are more likely to be depressed. A recent survey found that people who get enough rest had well-being scores twice as high as those who don’t. And today, Jesus is inviting us to step out of the everlasting busyness that curses our lives and enter into His rest. I stand before you today as someone who does not get near the amount of rest I should. And I have been so convicted this week that my lack of rest is evidence of a lack of faith in God. I have not trusted God enough to stop working, stop doing, making things happen. And it’s time for that to change! It’s time to enter His rest.

After their miraculous deliverance at the Red Sea, it didn’t take God’s people but a few days to loosen their grip on God. Three days and they had let go. So God knew He was going to have to teach them to hold fast to Him. And that was going to involve some hardship. That was going to involve some pain. But if they were going to conquer armies, if they were going to be a light to the world, if they were going to bring His blessing to lost and wicked people, they were going to have to learn to hold onto Daddy and never let go. Guess what? The same is true for us. In this world full of monsters and all kinds of scary things, God is on a mission to get us to hold fast to Him. He’s saying: “Hold onto me and you’ll always be safe. Hold onto me and you will lack nothing. Hold onto me and I’ll make you into a great and mighty nation that will bring my blessing to the world.”

Can you imagine going to your work, your neighborhood, your home, living your life in such a way that people look at you and think, “God is wonderful”? By modest estimate, more than a quarter of the United States population has professed an evangelical conversion experience. Many surveys find it to be much higher than that. Well, don’t you think that a pound of meat would be affected by a quarter pound of salt? If you were to eat a pound of meat with a quarter pound of salt, that salt would pretty much be all you tasted! Well, why isn’t the quarter pound of salt, the evangelical Christian church, having that sort of effect? Because we haven’t been willing to leave behind, as Jesus said, “All we have,” and “Our own life also” to follow Jesus.

But I want you to know that if faith can overcome all the impossible problems Moses was facing, it can overcome ours as well. Actual faith in God is in its very nature a power, an energy, a significant, conquering force over every evil in this world. And the same, overcoming faith that Moses had is available to each one of us. But we have to want it and we have to seek it. And if we do, we will find that there is no mountain too high, no challenge too great for the person who trusts in the strong hand of the Lord.

And unfortunately, this is happening too often today even in the church! So rarely do we think about the resurrected Christ. Far too often He is cut out of our minds to make room for other things. Jesus invites us to bring Him back into the picture of our lives. He invites us to make room for Him again! Our Choice Deepest Darkness or Marvelous Light Deepest darkness or marvelous light? That is the choice we have. But to choose the light we must leave the darkness completely behind. And that is a choice so many people today are unwilling to make. And therefore, all they know is a sad, depleted existence in which their souls are starving for something more. Today, God has made available to us an invisible power, right here in this room that can bring the dead to life. Today, He is holding out an invisible substance saying, “Leave the darkness behind and come experience the light.” But if we really want the light we must leave the darkness behind. Did you know that God is actively seeking worshippers? Jesus said in John 4 that the Father is seeking true worshippers. The whole reason for this battle between Moses and Pharaoh is that God wants the Israelites to be able to go and worship Him. All these signs and wonders are done for that single purpose. God is seeking worshippers of Him. Is that you? Is your heart regularly full of praise and thanksgiving to God for what He has done? Do you live to lift Him high above every other little god people worship on this earth? Money, power, sex, reputation, and that most-often worshipped god today – me?

From the day we come into this world our hearts are turned in on themselves. From day one, we live to please ourselves. And friends, that one thing is the cause of all the wars, misery, and destruction we see in human life. It’s the cause of so much of our fear, anxiety, and worry. Nothing will make me more miserable than living for my will. And God is on a mission to get every person to choose Him as Lord of their life. Not because He wants to conquer, but because He wants to bless. If you hear one thing I say this morning, hear this: The best thing that could possibly happen in our lives is for us to step off the throne and allow God to be God. To live each day with an attitude that says, “God, You’re in charge. No longer am I going to live for my happiness, I now live for Yours.” And this morning, God is inviting each of us to do just that.

Salvation is not just an issue concerning eternity, but is also a key issue relative to each day of life on earth. Our step of faith to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior must be more than an intellectual assent. In addition to our minds, our very heart – our very soul must be fully involved in our decision to yield our lives to God; otherwise, the transformation God wants for us will not take place. And again, as Robbie has taught us, God has plans His plans – His call – on our lives that goes beyond mere forgiveness, as great as that is.

As we look at Scripture and the history of God’s people, something very clear stands out about the people God chooses to do His work – when He looks for someone to use, when God searches for someone to do something great, He often seems to purposely choose weaker vessels. When looking for a king, He did not choose one of Jesse’s tall, older, more impressive-looking, sons, He chose the youngest, the smallest, the weakest … David, who was out tending the sheep. When looking for someone to carry His name to the world, God didn’t choose a great speaker with a clean record … He chose a murderer named Paul, who was weak with words. Who did Jesus choose to be the rock of His church? The biggest failure of all His faithful followers … a fisherman named Peter who had no religious training at all. And when looking for someone to stand up to the might and strength of Egypt to set His people free … He chose a frail old man named Moses, slow of speech and afraid … to do the job.
