The Changing Currents Podcast provides a place for host, Indi Purnell, to share words and conversations - in an open minded, open bodied way - about things that she is learning, that she believes in and that she deems worth hearing. Hoping that together we can create change - both inside and out - by consciously directing our energy and focus, into the people, places and things that we truly care about.
In episode #12, Indi encourages us to stay open to possibilities, to expression and to being surprised. She considers how even with positive intent, an obsessive approach to such things as open mindedness undermines its purpose and actually limits exploration and acceptance. Playing with language, Indi speaks to the notion of being a walking contradiction if it means embracing the full spectrum, or diluted elements, of ourselves. To stay curious about who and what makes us feel true and how this is often dynamic. How differing experiences, expressions, elements of self can coexist and are not necessarily mutually exclusive. An importance lies in honoring our fullness.
In episode 11, Indi talks about change and how regardless of the proposed outcome, it bears its own challenges. She speaks to her own recent responses to the beginnings of COVID restrictions easing, the influence of expectation and notes the okayness of feeling trepidation. A reminder is offered to find our center and to own our personal reality as opposed to getting lost in a comparative mindset. A brief yogic exercise is included from 14:35 - 20:00, based around somatic observation. The episode is closed with a grateful mention to how small things aren’t so small when you acknowledge their capacity to shift your holistic state.
In episode #10, Indi talks with one wise and cheeky woman – Raisha Rahman – about practicing spirituality in a world of many shades and creating purpose through flirting with all that life delivers. Together they speak their opinions about - and experiences with - the law of attraction, the power of self-belief and the use of astrology. This episode highlights our own, yet shared, journeys back home to ourselves and questions what the hard/easy road is and if that really matters in the grand scheme of things.
In episode #9, Indi explores the meaning of courage and how it doesn’t just exist in physical extremes. She applauds the art and courage involved in honest communication, expressing one’s self and asking considered questions. Reinforcing the relativity of life and how one’s external presentation often doesn’t mirror what’s going on internally. Through acknowledging the personal toll that suppressing experience takes, as well as its disservice to those around you, Indi aims to narrow her reflective discrepancy - to own and address her feelings as they arise. She emphasizes how finding truth in a situation – even if it’s not what you wanted – is liberating.
In episode #8, Indi shares a conversation with a beloved friend of hers - Mia Incerti - about the mystery and adventure that love is, the powerful and purposeful nature of it, in the essence of both conditional and unconditional love. Together they explore relationships and synergize their definitions of what love might be as a feeling, a language, a verb, a choice, a lesson, an experience, an acceptance, a welcoming of self and other.
In episode #7, Indi speaks to our relationship with time and asks why we seem to wish it away when things don’t go to plan. Why we dismiss what remains in front of us, denying our reality, our own power, our own experience. In a time like this, in a climate like this, Indi encourages a refocusing upon the present, away from past dwellings or future projections beyond our control. To allow one’s self to be angry at the world, to feel sad – and then to find moments of surrender, of embrace, of choice.
In episode #6, Indi shares a gratitude for body and for heart, appreciating what our physicality enables as a vessel for exploration and communication. Inviting us to prioritise the nourishment of our bodies, through positive consumption and activity, to enhance our potential for health, wealth and connectivity.
In episode #5, Indi is accompanied by a school friend of hers – James Brown – addressing his experience with, and opinion regarding, misconceptions and stereotyping within the school setting, as well as how he utilises music and lyric as a way to express his softer, rawer aspects of self and emotion. Reminding us of the importance of being real, refraining from judgement and embracing our differences.
In episode #4, Indi speaks to her shifted perspective regarding academia – the limits of textbook teachings and how there is more to life than pure logic and rationality. She believes it has its place and value but so too does the warm welcoming of experience and application of our own existing wisdom. To move through life with respect for our own innate knowledge and intuition. Indi names the struggle of deciphering the push from the pull and how now is as good a time as ever to listen in, to change the current expectations that favour a linear education, career and life path.
In episode #3, Indi is very happy to be chatting with a best friend of hers – Serena Beddison – speaking of sustainability, fashion, creativity, authenticity and changing current behaviours/mindsets about the union of such things. Tuning in to the importance of unapologetic self-expression and taking small steps to apply environmental, social and economic awareness to reduce harm where we can.
In episode #2, Indi explores a personal connection with some of the patterns that exist within nature. Articulating a shared understanding of inner and outer experience, mimicry between the mystery of our own internal landscapes, the cycling moon and the processing of growth and decay that we see in earth’s flora.
In her very first episode, Indi shares a conversation with a new but nonetheless legend of a friend of hers – Anthony Vezzu – speaking about how this podcast came to be, people supporting people, moving from talk into action and at the end she offers up a little taste of her relationship with and empowerment from yoga. The podcast acts as a symbol, reminding us to get out there and do the things and make the changes that we want to.
