Lesley lives and breathes for the outdoors, her infectious joy is as exhilarating as any downhill rush. Picture her slicing through untracked snow, conquering mountain bike trails, or simply soaking in the crisp Scottish air – with a smile as wide as the Highland panorama. In this episode too, I share a quote from an online source here is the Quote and Photo source:In this photo print, we are transported back to the exhilarating atmosphere of the 1987 FIS World Ski Championships held at Crans Montana. The focus is on Lesley Beck, a remarkable British skier who left an indelible mark on the world stage. Lesley Beck's impressive career reached its pinnacle when she proudly represented Great Britain in the Winter Olympics at Sarajevo in 1984. The image itself is a testament to Colorsport's exceptional ability to freeze moments of sporting excellence in time. Stewart Fraser skillfully captures every detail - from the snowflakes gently falling around Lesley Beck to the intensity etched on her face - transporting viewers right into that thrilling competition. This print serves as a powerful reminder of not only Lesley Beck's incredible talent but also of all athletes who have dedicated their lives to their sport. It encapsulates both determination and inspiration, inviting us to relive those unforgettable moments where dreams were pursued fearlessly on snowy slopes.https://www.mediastorehouse.co.uk/colorsport-images/skiing/lesley-beck-1987-fis-world-ski-championships-7848059.html

This week we speak with Mike Douglas who is widely regarded as the 'Godfather' of Free-skiing, as he has helped influence and shape the sport of skiing over his many years.

In this two part episode, part one we look at his early days of skiing, how he got involved with the sport an begin to dive into development story of the Iconic Salomon 1080 ski.

In the second part of our conversation, we learn more about the plans for PFD skis now people have the chance to go skiing again. PFD is not just about quality skis and snowboard, it really is about building something bigger; a community who's common interest lie in enjoying the Mountains and seeking the best they have to offer - both in product and experiences.

I had the honour of meeting Rupert Gammond, founder of PFD,  a number of years ago and from the very start was struck by his passion and dedication to skiing and to that of making his own skis. Making skis of any kind is a huge undertaking - but building them in the UK in a limited quantity, focusing on using products like Bamboo - is a whole other level. After finishing a product design degree, Rupert Gammond, founder of PFD, went straight to the mountains. Over the course of six winters, both passions of creativity and freeride skiing merged together to produce fresh, purposeful designs with a pure, minimal approach. In 2012 Pure Freeride Design was born out of a young designer’s passion for quality craftsmanship coupled with an equal passion for skiing.  After finishing a product design degree,PFD began its journey to create handmade skis in a purpose-built workshop, driven towards the perfect blend of materials, design, and a ‘no gimmick’ attitude to freeride skiing. You can find out more about the skis and the process here: https://www.pfdskis.com/

His initial inspiration to start Dewerstone, came from his opportunity to attend a brand event with Sweet Protection. Coming away from that experience he felt deeply connected not only with the brand itself – but moved that a brand could really bond with people and share a message & connection.

Though he may have spent time fitting ski boots earlier in his career,… he is now based in Princetown, Dartmoor National Park & he is making an impact in the lives of of ordinary people across the globe. Through his work and effort and that of is customers and community; last week alone they fed over 1000 people in Indonesia and continue to support families in need.

Take some time, and listen to this humble and engaging character who through the work of his brand Dewertone is making a real difference.

Daniel Bogue – NZSIA examiner, Technical team member, President of the NZSIA

The Joys of modern technology allowed me to catch up with Daniel from the other side of the globe as he embarks on the ski season in New Zealand. It had been far too long since we caught up - but always a pleasure!

Daniel started skiing at the age of 11 on a school ski trip. He loved it so much he convinced his family that it was a sport they should all do. Since then its been all downhill. (Skiing Downhill) . Both Daniel and his brother carried on to become NZSIA examiners and eventually trained there parents to become instructors through the Rookie Academy at Treble Cone.

Once Daniel completed his degree he set off skiing in Japan, Canada the United states and more recently China. Daniel will always call Wanaka home and rates Treble Cone as one of his favorite mountains to ski and train on. Daniel still works for the Rookie academy and is an active examiner.

Having two small children means he doesn’t get to ski in the Northern Hemisphere as much as he would like but he loves the fact that 3 generations of Bogues get to ski together in NZ all because of a School ski trip.

Daniel traveled to Bulgaria as part of the NZSIA Interski team and has been elected to President of the Board of the NZSIA.

He represented Great Britain at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver where he took part in the men's downhill, super-G, giant slalom and combined. As a four-time British champion he won the giant slalom and combined in 2008 and 2009. In 2013 Ed switched from alpine skiing to ski cross but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the ski cross competition at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. In May 2016 Drake announced his retirement from racing. Following his retirement Ed turned to broadcasting & commentating on Eurosport's World Cup coverage and becoming a newsreader.

In addition, the store and organization he operates works with suppliers and forward thinkers on how to deal with excess ski clothing and other items which allow us to get outside.

The concept seeks to change the way businesses operate, and working with the talent and skills of the local community for the benefit of everyone.

Oh.... and he also runs a VERY successful ski boot shop too – The Boot Lab.

Today being Earth Day, this is a really relevant conversation and I hope you’ll join in the discussion.

In the autumn of 1985 Dion Taylor travelled from his home in New Zealand to London England where he started work for Snow+Rock. It was there at the newly opened store in the London Trocadero centre that his 27 year journey with Snow+Rock began. From his start working on the shop floor in the equipment department fitting boots & skis, to leading the company for many years, he embodied the ethos of work hard and play hard.

With the growth in the 80’s and 90’s of snow sport participation and easier travel; Dion was part of a team of equally enthusiastic and passionate people ( who you’ll hear about)  - and together they shifted the snow sport retail landscape which we still see today.

I had the honour to speak with Barry Allison from Ski CONNEXIONS, Whistler Blackcomb, and Yes Improvement. It was a pleasure to have a smile and chat with a mate from years gone past.

Barry shared with me some of his adventures from Eastern Canada to Level 4 in Whistler & starting his technical boot fitting service, Ski Connexions, and I found out some stories I didn’t even realise.

Barry started his skiing career in the Ottawa area in 1987. After achieving his CSIA (Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance) level III in 1990 he and some close friends decided it was time to head west. What was originally planned to be a couple seasons wound up being many many years! During this time, Barry achieved his CSIA level IV and became an active Course Conductor with the CSIA.

Exercise and Activity are Powerful Medicines.

I was inspired by this week’s guest Darren Hardy, when I saw that as an Ex serviceman during lockdown he was out helping families in his community and using his talents to raise money.

Not only was he helping those families whom were less fortunate, he was on a mission to raise money for Help for Hero’s and other notable charities.

His superpower? His mindset! The ability to push through incredible physical challenges of endurance to achieve a goal & the challenge in front of him.

Even during the lockdowns of 2020, he’s tackled some never before endurance events and set world records along the way.

One of the driving forces for him has been to raise awareness of Mental Illness and PTSD, and to lead by example that Exercise can REALLY make an impact to turn people’s lives around.

In these unprecedented times, when things may be tough, a voice of hope and inspiration is always welcome.

Regardless of the brand one works for, whether it is hard goods or soft goods; most people would agree that Shug Scott has a heart of gold & is held in high esteem across the industry. He’s always keen to help people and his knowledge of ski tuning and ski tech information is truly outstanding.

It was my absolute pleasure to speak with Shug, with his warm soft spoken tone and a few laughs about his partner in crime. Of course we chat about ski tuning and he opens up about working in the trade.

Today we take a step to the side of hardware and look at some of the areas that are equally as important to your active holiday as boots, and skis. In particular Socks!!! We put them on almost every day, but forget the key role they play in our warmth and comfort out on the slopes. You’ll leave this episode with a greater understanding of the importance and impact that good products make on your feet and how it can affect your enjoyment! Speaking with Adam Renshaw of Falke, not only does he share how much pressure your feet undergo in a day (I was shocked at this!) but realise how much fluid your feet produce. The key here is to understand how important that first layer is against your skin, ;especially in a pair of ski boots!! Though it may be controversial…… you too can find what team Adam supports!!! 😉
