The woman who became a nun and went to prison, Sr Helen Prejean changed her life from a comfortable suburban middle-class existence to a walk with the poor and dispossessed. Her decision to become the spiritual advisor to men on Death Row changed the way she viewed her own her faith.In 1982, a Catholic nun, Sister Helen Prejean, became the spiritual advisor to a Death Row inmate. Patrick Sonnier, the convicted killer of two teenagers, was sentenced to die in the electric chair of Louisiana's Angola State Prison. Dead Man Walking is Sr Helens account of the months leading up to Sonniers execution. The book was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and was number one on the New York Times Best Seller List for 31 weeks. The film version with Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon won an Oscar for Best Actress. The book was also the basis for an opera which premiered in October 2000 with the San Francisco Opera Chorus and Orchestra.
