Paul has led or held a critical role in over 70 undercover rescue missions in 15 countries, and has contributed to or been directly involved in the rescue of over 5,000 children.

In the years after that mission, Paul founded the Child Liberation Foundation, an organization actively involved in the fight against child trafficking, and has led or held a critical role in over 70 undercover rescue missions in 15 countries. Richardo Franco Romo, Global Commercial Director of PRODENSA, explains the many advantages of setting up operations in Mexico, a significant investment destination for US and foreign companies due to its strong economy, stable macroeconomic factors and vastly improved infrastructure. In 2023, Mexican exports were $500 billion with 86% coming to the US.

Ricardo also shares the many special bonuses that employees receive; issues of corporate governance and taxation; and various HR laws for vacations, maternity/paternity leave, healthcare, among others. As a largely top-down, paternalistic work environment, the family plays a key role in employee retention programs (such as grocery coupons) and bonuses paid for punctuality and transportation.

Culturally, the concept of time (“Ahorita”) has multiple meanings and East Asian manufacturers, especially Koreans, face particular challenges. Nevertheless, the workforce is extremely productive; technical talent is abundant and growing; the threats of bribery and extortion are real but less than 2% of GDP; and salaries/wages remain far lower than in Europe, the US or Canada.

{08:21} Maquiladora factories in Mexico

{14:38} Mexican laws foreign investors need to be aware of

{21:48} Cultural issues in Mexico

{30:26} Top-down cultures in Mexico

{31:55} The most difficult countries PRODENSA counsels

{42:35} The fear of bribery, extortion, kidnapping, etc. in Mexico

Gabor also emphasizes avoiding black-and-white and win-lose stereotypes, and that China offers no best practices and no precedents. Instead, like anywhere, investing companies seek predictability to gain profitability.

As the Global Platform Partnerships lead of Australia-based Canva, a worldwide design platform with users from over 190 countries, California-born Rachel Anne Carruthers discusses Canva’s global blueprint and how they tailor their marketing strategies to specific countries or regions such as India and Indonesia. She explains how culture affects users’ design experience and platform behavior, ethical dilemmas about incorporating certain icons and symbols, how Canva operates in China, business practices in the US vs. Australia, and challenges of localization in Silicon Valley during her previous times there.

Highlights:

{03:08} Canvas growth strategies

{06:46} Offering design elements based on regions of the world the users.

{09:55} Adapting marketing based on regions of the world.

{010:53} How culture affects users’ design.

{19:53} Cultural icons and symbols that don’t work with a global platform.

{23:14} USA vs Australia business practices

Rachel Carruthers bio:

Joining Canva in 2017, Rachel was originally responsible for leading Canva’s product and marketing localization and internationalization efforts. She worked to ensure that every user has a truly localized experience (be it on the Web App, iOS, or Android platforms) while leading cross-functional globalization initiatives to support Canva’s long-term international growth strategies.

In March 2023 she shifted gears to focus on some of Canva’s key platform partnerships, driving comarketing opportunities and amplifying new product launches. So far, her favorite thing about her time at Canva has been the convergence of language and design, and the anthropological aspect of how culture can affect users' design experience and platform behavior. Prior to moving to Sydney to pursue her Master’s degree in Media, Rachel was working as a Senior Localization Project Manager back home in Silicon Valley, servicing high-profile tech enterprise clients.

Rachel is deeply passionate about language, food, and culture, and loves to travel whenever she can. Being from California she also loves being outdoors, as well as working in animal foster care.

As a former American commercial diplomat in Beijing to facilitate US-China trade, Joshua Halpern presents a wealth of insights about e-commerce companies and the many factors they must consider to operate worldwide. But with the abundance of support companies that handle all of the issues, the process has become far faster and easier. Josh also presents ways that companies find overseas venture partners when they have no previous experience or contacts, and how branding is critical. Even if companies’ images do not adapt well internationally, Josh shows how each country will still have a “tribe” of customers who will adopt them. While DeBeers has successfully equated its diamonds with the concept of Love in the West, Josh also illustrates how DeBeers succeeded in Japan where the “love” connotations are not the same, how the Investment in “ROI” is less costly abroad than companies may assume, and the tax reasons that are driving an exodus of Westerners from China.

Highlights:

{03:20} Advice for U.S. companies selling abroad.

{07:57} What the U.S. Commerce Department provides for U.S. exporters.

{11:50} The shift in e-commerce strategy according to industry

{15:50} Building a brand internationally.

{19:50} When your brand doesn’t work in other cultures.

{25:40} Advice for companies entering or leaving China.

Joshua Halpern bio:

Josh also consults C-suite execs on global digital trade strategies in product verticals such as celebrity beauty, health, branded agriculture and outdoor lifestyle. What are some challenges for an American to establish a manufacturing facility in Poland, a country more risk-averse than most? Michael Klepacz uses the advantages of a low-cost country to pay 20% more than the minimum wage but illustrates the sometimes lack of personal responsibility, the “good enough” mentality, “not connecting the dots” and the “ghosts of Communism.” Nevertheless, he would rather be nowhere else and in a country with a lot of “low-hanging fruit.” Michael also illustrates how to have a factory in a country when you (mostly) don’t speak its language and how he strives to maintain high-quality standards. His company makes undyed textiles and products made from hemp and linen (including paper and vegan-friendly guitar straps), and markets mainly through trade shows, individual distributors, and sales reps to send his products westward into Europe and on to North America.

Highlights:

In this episode, she explores the importance of branding and influencers, China’s domestic wine industry, the country’s pragmatic approach to doing business, wine pricing, why “wine” may not really be wine, how wine consumption practices differ from the West’s, wine pairing, dominance of online wine buying, and etiquette at restaurant meals.

Highlights:

{01:14} Key elements that determine success in the wine business

{07:22} Management styles differences between Chinese companies and French companies?

{14:52} Chinese wine consumers differ from French Wine consumers?

At age 15, Ceci entered Paris’ famous Hospitality School. She discovered the fantastic world of wine and literally fell in love with it. She loves wine and for her, it is a human product that evolves with time.

No one can master wine; there is always so much to learn and be surprised about. However, Ceci much disliked the way Wine was taught, with its complexity and elitist nature. To her, wine is about conviviality and social life! We consume wine with friends, at restaurants, to pair with dinner, over parties, celebrations, with our love, or just alone after a long day of work…

Ceci continued her international journey in hospitality management working in marketing, finance, and business strategy in famous hotels and restaurants, after a Degree at Institut Paul Bocuse and an MBA at ESSEC Business school. During all that time, she always kept some idea in mind to market wine more accessible.

From virtual tables with RFID tags to smart wine labels, Ceci always got ideas and a strong desire to lead new wine experiences, more easily and fun! She was looking to the US market, and then China! China is booming and soon becoming the second wine market worldwide, but consumers are totally neophyte but interested to discover more to select their wine, taste, and enjoy.

Cici produced and launched innovative multisensory smart wine labels to ease wine selection. It ended up being also perfect for wine events.

Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Adrian Kingswell, CEO of the analytics firm Mezzo Labs in London, speaks about the many fascinating issues of building a business in Asia. These include China’s absorbing HK, the impact on staffing, and international companies’ exodus from the territory. While he says, Singapore’s business methods mirror those in the UK and global standards, other countries are more conformist and risk-averse, often requiring local partners to smooth the cultivation of local clients. Where much dining and entertainment in the West helps maintain a relationship after a deal is sealed, in the East large investments in dining, after-hours drinking, and meeting must be made upfront to cultivate connections. Adrian also presents how pricing practices and decision-making are implemented in his target markets, and how he turned the company’s Italian name (meaning “half”) into an advantage in a humorous twist.

Highlights:

{01:25} Adrian’s journey

{05:40} Working in Hong Kong and Singapore

{11:19} Working in a country run by The Communist Party

{21:58} Pricing methods in different countries

{23:00} Working in Muslim-majority countries

{37:00} The financial cost of building relationships

Adrian Kingwell bio:

Adrian is the founder and CEO of two businesses: Mezzo Labs, an analytics consultancy, and Uplifter, a SaaS platform, both based in London. He is the first to admit that global expansion was driven more by his heart than his head: a passion for meeting interesting people in faraway countries that started as a backpacking student and continued throughout his 30-year business life. In 2017, he opened Mezzo Labs Hong Kong and then two years later Mezzo Labs Singapore. His clients are not only based in those cities, but also in neighboring Malaysia and Indonesia.

Dr. Chaz Austin, with his decades of experience, describes many keys to working with executives in two major countries. “Structured like a brick,” India is a very top-down, hierarchical business structure in which “kissing up to the boss” is the main way to gain titles, gain promotions, and gain more money. Unlike a participatory “humanistic” structure which welcomes ideas from any level, Indian business in general does not encourage ideas from below and has very few opportunities for women at senior levels, except in nonprofits. Nigeria has a similar management structure and is more open to women but confronts embedded corruption, bribery, bureaucracy, and politics. Nevertheless, Dr. Austin presents a young, dynamic, Nigerian agribusiness company, Zambara, that is working to break this mold. Regarding leadership, companies worldwide that have women in senior positions generate more profits and companies that embrace all kinds of professional backgrounds at their senior levels succeed better.
