Paul said Christ will come unexpectedly. Efforts to determine the date of the Second Coming are foolish. Don’t be misled by anyone who claims to know. The Bible says that no one knows and that even believers will be surprised. The Lord will return suddenly and unexpectedly, so believers should be ready! Christ’s second coming will be swift and sudden. There will be no opportunity for last-minute repentance or bargaining. The choice you have already made will determine your eternal destiny. Suppose he were to return today. How would he find you living? Are you ready to meet him? Live each day prepared to welcome Christ.

For the time being, Paul intended to stay in the ministry at Ephesus, where the opportunities and the opposition were both great. One or the other of these situations may have arisen while he was writing this letter (cf. 4:19). It says something about Paul’s perception of his ministry that the presence of opposition was a sign to him of the viability of his labor and reason for pressing on, not running away.

Ephesians 5:15-16

Look carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people), Making the very most of the time [buying up each opportunity], because the days are evil. Amplified Bible

Make a quick mental list of the things you really value. Undoubtedly, your list would include your loved ones, home, church, and perhaps a few other possessions. Would it also include your time? Paul’s admonition to live carefully, “making the most of every opportunity,” is a reminder of the preciousness of time. Think about it. If someone takes away your money, you may not like it, but you can earn more money. It might be challenging if someone or something takes away your job or even your house, but you can get another job or home. But if something wastes your time, you can never get it back. Those hours or days are gone, never to be retrieved. That makes the time a precious thing indeed. What are you doing with the time God has given you? Are you “making the most of every opportunity,” allowing him to use you and your time as he sees fit?

Matthew 18:32-35

Because God has forgiven all our sins, we should not withhold forgiveness from others. Realizing how completely Christ has forgiven us should produce a free and generous attitude of forgiveness toward others. When we don’t forgive others, we are saying that we appreciate God’s love and forgiveness but that we’re unwilling to give it to anyone else.

Genesis 6:8-9

Noah was a recipient of God’s grace and, therefore, was spared from judgment (in contrast with those who aspired to immortality). In the time of Moses, Israel would know they were chosen of God and should walk in righteousness.

“Walked”

(Heb. halak) (Gen. 5:24; 6:9; Deut. 13:4; Ps. 128:1; Mic. 6:8) Strong’s #1980: The basic meaning of the Hebrew verb translated here as walk is “to go” or “to travel.” The word is used often in the OT to signify merely a simple act of motion (Gen. 13:17; 2 Sam. 11:2). In 6:9 and other passages, the word possesses connotations of a habitual manner of life or a constant relationship with God. Thus the word describes Noah, Enoch, and other people of faith as living in a close relationship with their God and in obedience to His commands. Throughout Scripture, believers are called to walk with God daily, abiding in Him completely (Gal. 5:16; 1 John 2:6).

In some ways this warning section is the most pointed and stern of all. It is also climactic. It follows the completion of the epistle’s exposition of the high priestly role and service of Jesus Christ, so it gathers up the implications of these truths and drives them home with full force.

Galatians 2:19-20

Paul then distinguished himself from Peter, contrasting what he did with the Law with what Peter did with the Law. Paul described the transformation in a person who has come to God by faith in Christ in terms of a death and a resurrection. The concept is repeated in both verses and the reference in both cases is to a believer’s union with Christ in His death and resurrection. First, Paul stated that through the Law he died to the Law. The Law demanded death for those who broke it, but Christ paid that death penalty for all sinners. Thus the Law killed Him and those joined to Him by faith, freeing them to be joined to another, to live for God.

However, to fully trust God and wait on His timing, we must dedicate time daily studying and meditating on his word. This allows us to experience His divine energy and become wise in understanding His works.

In a concluding prayer, we gather to thank God for his mercies, protection, and righteousness. Lastly, the episode brings assurance that with patient endurance of God's will, we will be duly rewarded. Remember, God loves you, and in His perfect timing, all will be well.

Should Christians Seek After Spiritual Enlightenment?

Although David is apparently close to God, he is still a human being whose relationship is subject to threat and temptation. He has advisers who engage in convincing theological reflection that makes sense but is not from God. This advice threatens his ability to be the sort of king that God wants. He also nearly succumbs to temptation such as in the incident with Nabal. David may be innocent but he is also very much human.

Problems occur in every area of life. The disciples needed rest, but they encountered a terrible storm. The Christian life may have more stormy weather than calm seas and may present life-threatening challenges. It is not just smooth sailing and triumphant living. As Christ’s followers, we must be prepared for the storms that will surely come. We must not surrender to the stress, but remain resilient, solve our problems, and recover from setbacks. With faith in Christ, we can pray, trust, and move ahead. When a squall approaches, we can praise God and lean into the wind.

When someone hurts you deeply, instead of giving him what he deserves, Paul says to befriend him. Why does Paul tell us to forgive our enemies? (1) Forgiveness may break a cycle of retaliation and lead to mutual reconciliation. (2) It may make the enemy feel ashamed and change his or her ways. (3) In contrast, repaying evil for evil hurts you just as much as it hurts your enemy. Even if your enemy never repents, forgiving him or her will free you of a heavy load of bitterness.

Hebrews describes the old system, where God was separated from the people in the Holy of Holies, in the temple, by a curtain. But Christ provided a way through the curtain by his own body so that we might approach God without fear. We do not have to come very far when we come near, but we do have to come. The idea of submission now includes the added benefit of God’s immediate response. As we submit our wills and desires to God, we will discover his care and closeness in ways we cannot perceive when we are in rebellion against him.

In Chapter 1, Christ is presented as God's ultimate and superior revelation. This can greatly encourage us and help us avoid losing our faith in Christ.

Jesus’ purpose was not to convince people to come to him by performing wonders; he came inviting people to come to him in faith. Then, as a response to their faith, he performed great miracles. If faith was required, these self-righteous religious leaders had little hope.

Application:All four Gospels record Mary’s example of devotion. Three important lessons remind us how we should love the Lord and not repress those who do good works:

Let her alone. We must not disregard or depreciate some-one else’s loving act of service just because it’s not our style of serving. Sometimes envy, ignorance, or hardness of heart keep us from seeing the value of showing honor and praise to Christ.
She has performed a good service. Mary’s act was courageous and sacrificial. Christ welcomed her and regarded her efforts. We must not be so practical in our stewardship of resources that we criticize the genuine and beautiful ways others express their love for Christ.
She has done what she could. Mary took the initiative. She did an act of devotion when no one else would. She gave of her resources in a way only she could. Some people only talk about what they can do or wish they would have done, but Mary did what she felt led to do.

Mary did not ask for a sign, but it seems that Gabriel gave her one by explaining that Mary’s relative Elizabeth was also pregnant as the result of God’s grace. Gabriel gave Mary a person to whom she could go for support during what could prove to be a difficult time for Mary as she humbly fulfilled God’s will. This also illustrated for Mary the fact that nothing is impossible with God. God took a barren woman who was past childbearing age and caused her to become pregnant. God took a virgin and caused a child to grow in her womb. With God, nothing is impossible.

There may be some things in your life that God wants you to move so that you can make room for Him. In order to accomplish this task, it requires some work. (1) Clear lots of ground for your tent. (2) Spread out. (3) Think BIG! (4) Use plenty of cords (ropes) (5) Expect growth!

Isaiah 54:2-3

In Israel a barren woman was disgraced, for children aided in family chores and helped the parents in their old age. Fertility on every level was a sign of God’s blessing. For example, when Hannah was not able to have children she was devastated, but when the Lord allowed her to have a son she sang for joy (1 Sam. 1:1–2:10). Israel was like a woman who had no children and was therefore in a continual state of mourning. But by God’s sovereignty and grace He will enable her to have many children. So she will break into song and shout for joy. Jerusalem, once desolate and mourning (Lam. 1:1–5), will be revitalized and teeming with people. Also like a nomad who has so many children he has to enlarge his tent to accommodate them all, Israel’s descendants will increase and even settle in the cities of foreign nations because there will not be enough room for them in their homeland.

Matthew 24:1-1

The nations at war and the earth’s turmoil, revealed in increased earthquakes and famines, would also not signal the end. Instead, this will be but the beginning of birth pains; in other words, these will be preliminary sufferings. Jesus’ words indicated to the eager disciples that there would be a span of time before the end of the age and the coming kingdom—it would not come that week, or immediately upon Jesus’ resurrection, or even right after the destruction of Jerusalem. First, much suffering would occur as a part of life on earth, while history would move toward a single, final, God-planned goal—the creation of a new earth and a new kingdom (Revelation 21:1–3). The description of sufferings as “birth pains” is a typical biblical metaphor for the beginning of prekingdom travail and suffering (see Isaiah 13:6–8; 26:16–18; Jeremiah 4:31; 22:20–23; Hosea 13:9–13).

Ten men had been healed, but only one, the foreigner (referring to the man from Samaria), came back to give glory to God. Jesus was not so much concerned about being thanked as he was about the men’s understanding of what had happened. The other nine went off, free from leprosy but not necessarily free from sin through the salvation Jesus could offer. This one man was freed, so Jesus sent him on his way with the knowledge that his faith had made him well. He not only had a restored body, his soul had been restored as well.

This is wise advice from a wise church planter and leader. Paul knew firsthand the potential for problems in any church where people of a variety of religious backgrounds, cultures, and ages come together. Timothy’s character, and not his age, would determine his authority to lead. Paul called Timothy’s specific role an example—meaning he was to be a pattern or model. Whatever his age, Timothy was not to allow anyone to minimize his role but was to persist in being a good example.

To attain spiritual maturity a believer must do the good he now knows. He must stand confidently on God’s Word even in trials and temptations. He must compassionately serve his brethren without prejudicial favoritism but with practical faith. He must speak carefully with a controlled tongue and wise, cultivated thought. He must submit in contrition to his all-powerful Father, Law-giver, and Judge with a humble spirit, just action, and a trusting heart. He must be what God wants him to be, do what God wants him to do, speak as God wants him to speak, and sense what God wants him to sense.

Habakkuk 1:1-5

The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw. O Lord, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not hear? Or cry to you “Violence!” and you will not save? Why do you make me see iniquity, and why do you idly look at wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted. “Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told. (ESV)

But we need, like Habakkuk, to be open to God’s lateral thinking. His perception and perspective are much wider than ours. He sees the end from the beginning and he sees the whole picture. His purposes and activity are based on this knowledge and understanding. Our judgments are radically affected by time, space and mortality. God stands outside all three. Yet, in his compassion and concern, he takes our prayers very seriously.

Matthew 25:1-1

Ecclesiastes 3:1-9

Ecclesiastes 3:1 (KJV) To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven...

God has ordered all things, and a human being cannot change God's appointments or fully understand them or anticipate them. But the world is not fundamentally chaotic or irrational. It is ordered by God, and it is for humans to accept matters as they are by God's appointments, including their own limitations. Everything has its "time"and is good in its time.

Acts 2:1

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all filled with one accord in one place.

Prayer had prepared the disciples for their obedient response. Preparation was done beforehand to allow them to be ready for their upcoming assignment to fulfill the Great Commission. Begin the day with God, kneel down to Him in prayer. Lift up your heart to see His abode and seek His love to share. Open the Book of God and read a portion there, that it may hallow all your thoughts and sweeten all your care.

Among all those trying to be healed, Jesus found the one who couldn’t help himself.

No matter how trapped you feel in your infirmities, God can minister to your deepest needs. Don’t let a problem or hardship cause you to lose hope. God may have special work for you to do in spite of your condition, or even because of it. Many have ministered more effectively to hurting people because they have triumphed over their own hurts.
