Take a lie, repeat it often enough and those who might want to believe it will do so if they see it often enough - it’s what we call the Illusory Truth Effect and it’s what happens when something untrue is repeated so often people start to believe it - and the coalition is really good at it because all three parties want to take credit for everything.

Social cohesion is impossible to measure but there are markers we can use - like the latest Stats NZ Wellbeing survey - which shows a decline in trust in social institutions and an increase in fear of crime. A fear it seems one party really pushed with some outside help…

Fuck you and your communities - that’s the message yesterday from Christopher Luxon as he announced he was gutting the Local Government Act to remove the bits of the law that allow Councils to do the things that make a community a community. By this point, Tui must be wondering how effective a “Yeah, Right” campaign involving everything this government says would be. Yesterday Children’s Minister Karen Chhour was on Breakfast defending her decisions to ignore expert advice and evidence in her plan to railroad changes to Oranga Tamariki, including slashing funding to service providers, claiming they were hoarding government money. Of course it’s a lot more complicated and nasty than that.

Here in Aotearoa New Zealand, our Minister for Treaty Negotiations was recently found to have ordered the removal of Te Reo Maori from official invites to our only indigenous public holiday event, Matariki. It’s just the latest in a long list of actions this government have done that seem to target indigenous culture and peoples. They claim it’s to make sure everyone is treated equally but does the research back up this claim (I’m sure you know by now what the answer to that’s going to be)

Māori wards are going to referenda next year, despite massive outrage and detailed reasons against this backwards step away from being good Te Tiriti partners and supporters of local government making their own decisions. But this Government is in for a fight - since the largest untapped voting demographic is more Māori, more understanding of the place of Te Tiriti in society, more willing to be good partners and better equiped to handle the crap than ever before! If they go out and vote.

It’s Tax Cut Day - well that’s how National are pitching it. And they want you to be excited as they tell you this will ease the pain of the cost of living crisis they exacerbated for low to middle income earners which they kept low and middle earners through their increased costs and below inflation minimum wage increases.
And while a minimum wage earner will be lucky if they get $12.50 a week (remember to read the fine print folks), they’re putting aside over $200 Million for tobacco companies…

Local body politicians have to walk a very fine line usually, knowing they have to work with central government no matter their own political leanings. Most opt to be diplomatic - which makes a lot of sense. But after they leave office, there’s nothing stopping them showing their true colours - like the former Mayor who called Blake to base and threaten him over his campaign to reverse Whaikaha funding reductions.

A recent announcement from Dr Shane Reti claiming an overspend at Te Whatu Ora is just not only spin, it’s wrong. It’s an underfunding of an integral piece of the country’s infrastructure, which they have added pressure to with their changes, while ignoring the warnings from industry, economists and academics.

But that doesn’t mean VP Kamala Harris gets the job automatically, but it would be easier for the Democrats if she did, and the lawyers, and the campaign teams. Tauranga has voted! Well 30% of it at least…
But those 30% had some clear messages - not fans of the pre-commissioner Council and they don’t want people being openly racist or pushing mis and disinformation.
Oh and because it’s over, I can now explain why some controversial candidate’s campaign to Gish Gallop and get me worked up with the threat of Netsafe and police because of my content won’t work. And no, it’s not because of free speech, which seems to be something they only like for themselves…

MSD numbers out yesterday show an unsurprising increase in people receiving help from what is meant to be our safety net social welfare system - but cruel new sanctions have increased, the people being sanctioned are disproportionately people of colour, the people most impacted by the govt reserve bank choices are people of colour and it is all just going to get much much worse.

How is the campaign going to raise awareness around the return of funding levels to Whaikaha? Well lots of politicians are keen to support it. A few Mayors are supportive but worried about upsetting central government who they have to work with and at least one Party leader showed the Christian charity they’re known for. But the Petition will be accepted next month and then it’s on to the next plan!

Extra funding to help people of any age work through mental health issues is never a bad thing to see - and yesterday’s $24 Million Gumboot Friday announcement is no different. But it was, sadly, another sleight of hand budget trick from the government wanting you to ignore it’s gutting of mental health services elsewhere and adding to people’s mental health issues in other ways.

Remember - seperate spaces in Uni are bad unless it’s bathrooms to segregate trans people. And feelings don’t matter when it comes to facts, unless it’s about how TERFs, cookers and conspiracy theorists feel when it comes to trans people using bathrooms. But none of it really matters unless Winston Peters gets his flagging polling numbers over 5% again - and his followers may be willing to see him burn the coalition in the process to make it happen.

Andrew Bydder, Hamilton City Councillor is a NZ Loyal member and sovereign citizen who once joined crowds to demand the execution of his co-workers for 15 minute cities, abused staff so much he was banned from the Council building, has had numerous code of conduct complaints and spent the last 6 months telling anyone who would listen that Hamilton City Council is being secretly run by a cabal of WEF loving woke drones. Well this week he was the epitome of “Fuck around, find out” as he found out his crap isn’t being tolerated in the Council chamber any more.

Wow - the Government is really pleased with itself that it only took 6 months to get their first Local Water Done Well across the line in Auckland over the weekend. It stops Watercare from increasing water rates by 25.8% to just 7.2% so let’s give credit where it’s due…

Last week Local Government Minister Simeon Brown told councils they need to focus on “Need to haves” not “nice to haves”. Probably today we will find out if Children’s Minister Karen Chhour will have to front up to a summons from the Waitangi Tribunal about repealing Section 7AA of the Orange Tamariki Act. The right decry this as unfair but the reality is, unlike another Māori led initiative for Māori, this has measurable positive results already happening which raises questions about the reasons behind repealing it.

The merger of Newshub and Stuff for broadcast news may upset some people unhappy with the service one or both currently provide, but it could have been a lot worse if rumours of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp stepping in had been true - because no other news organisation has a history of stoking division, blaming minorities and starting culture war bullshit the likes we only see pale imitations of here, quite like News Corp.

The coalition of chaos has set to slashing and burning government departments to pay for their tax cuts, after spending the morning blaming Labour for the technical recession we were in - which was not only engineered specifically but impacted by this governments policy to cancel major projects and refuels to actually deal with the cost of living crisis. Now thousands of civil servants are on the verge of being made unemployed, some of our most important ministries will be far less capable of doing what they do and landlords and the wealthy will get their tax cuts despite warnings from the IMF.

Tax deductibility is a really complicated issue - on one hand we do need a stock of rental properties, the last few years have been an anomaly from a tax perspective and IRD felt it wasn’t the right move at the time.
On the other hand, the current system has helped more first home buyers than ever get into property, not had a major impact on property investment numbers and created a much more even playing field between investors and home owners.
But the government changes are expensive - and the focus on these changes over core infrastructure and looking after our young people doesn’t sit well with many people. And it causes more inequities with our already highly flawed tax system...

In our elections, we all want free and fair processes but our laws around funding, especially for 3rd party promotors, are vague and problematic. We don’t get to see who is funding them, and if they spend less than $100’000 we don’t get to see what they spent their funds on. The loose ends of the 2023 Election cycle are mostly over - as two local body by elections wrapped up over the weekend. In Wellington it was a shift to the right and in Hamilton, it was almost a like for like replacement (just with less cheering on crowds as they decide to execute your co-workers).
But both elections did have one terrible result - the turnout…

After a weird rambling state of the nation speech, Luxon completely misjudged the level of protest he would receive at Auckland’s annual Big Gay Out event, but he shouldn’t be surprised - his policies he has agreed to in coalition will not only harm people in the rainbow community now, but for generations to come.

During the election campaign, when asked about co-governance, right wing MPs would either skirt around the answer by claiming they believe in 1 person 1 vote, making dog whistles to their racist followers or straight up be racist if they belonged to NZ First. Well it turns out that while Co-governance was never going to give anyone extra votes, there is a system that does. And yesterday in Parliament a chance to change that was pulled from the biscuit tin.

And a change to our legal system which will see funding withdrawn from Section 27 Cultural Reporting will once again confirm that in Aotearoa, there is privilgium happening for some, because the reports will only be accessible to those with the resources to get them, not everybody - and to claim it’s about focusing on the victims is disingenuous until the government makes them available to all or to none.

A 1988 Ministerial advisory group called it the most insidious and destructive form of racism in the country - 36 years later there’s political parties and outside influences arguing to maintain it - showing that racism isn’t just direct slurs and attacks, in some hands it’s about keeping things the way they are by victim blaming and denying responsibility.

At the last local body elections in 2022, Voice for Freedom tried to circumvent the democratic process by encouaging and supporting members to run for election without disclosing their affiliations to voters.
Now Liz Gunn, notable conspiracy theorist and leader of NZ Loyal, a Sovereign Citizen aligned fringe party, is working with Hamilton City Councillor Andrew Bydder to to build a network of their supporters to run en masse in 2025 and take over local councils.

This week 500’000 households got copies of Sir Apirana Ngata’s 1922 translation of The Treaty of Waitangi. As a document, the alt-right love it, because it says exactly what they want to hear from someone Julian Batchelor considers a “Good Māori” - someone who worked within the systems of the dominant group in society. But the thing about Ngata, he was only considered “good” when he kept his head down and didn’t upset the Waka - but the racists pushing his translation only want you to know him as the guy on the $50 note.

In the penultimate episode we catch up with our remaining Gallery members to find out if, a week out from the close of polls, have they decided who to vote for.

This one is a little different - this time it's just me, going over a horror week of electioneering, full of racism, dog whistles, othering, hate and violence.
These are not the ideals we should be seeing in an election in Aotearoa. It is frankly disgusting, disappointing and depressing.
Mis and Dis Information have been a part of the political landscape in Aotearoa much more significantly over the past few years, and as an election comes around, it ramps up even more - and not just from traditional spreaders.
A non stop campaign trail, media stand ups, developing situations, public events, meetings, online tools and social media - it’s all so much - and it all means it’s easier to see dis and misinformation leak through to conversations around water coolers and dinner tables.
In this week's episode of Te Public Gallery, I talk to Journalism student and founder of This Quality, Sam about how to identify the truth from mis and dis information, the role journalists play in combating stand the risks to our democracy if it's not bought into check.
At the start of the year politicians were warned that this would be the most disrupted election ever. The risk was high because of rage farmed, disenfranchised voters being fed mis and disinformation, outside players like Posey Parker and Julian Batchelor whipping up dissent, race baiting from politicians in parliament and the need to grab headlines from fringe actors in the political scene.
But that raises questions about what is a good disruption and a bad one, how much disruption is there really, and how coordinated are the campaigns towards causing disruptions.
In this weeks episode I explore these questions with activist Scout and Holly Snape - Campaign Manager for the Hamilton East campaign for Labour's Georgie Dansey (she was the Hamilton East candidate who didn't side with Sovereign Citizens when they issued execution writs to Councillors, in case you need reminding).
Sometimes cited as a Bellwether seat, Hamilton East really isn't much of one. It's population has larger than the national average numbers of Maori, Pacifica and immigrant communities, it's average income is only $31800 a year, because it's mostly young population are predominantly studying and its boundry's were changed last election to remove an older, more conservative voter group in the northern suburbs (putting them in Hamilton West to match population redistribution)
And this year it will get a brand new MP. But will it be the married parent, small business owner who works in their community, or the married parent, small business owner who works in their community that gets the vote? On paper both Labour's Georgie Dansey and National's Ryan Hamilton share some similarities but one is also a conservative christian who not only voted against covid protections during the pandemic but also tried to side with sovereign citizens who issued death warrants to his fellow Councillors and the other is a supporter of living wage earnings for her staff, and a proud member of Labour's Maori and Rainbow candidate lists.
In this week's episode we look at the candidates, the surprising omission of policy and candidates from across the political spectrum and much more with Dan, our Hamilton East based small business owner.

35% of all households in Aotearoa are rented - which makes them a huge chunk of the voting population. This election Labour is standing by changes they made to rental laws when they took power, the Green Party want to bring in income protection to help people which would benefit renters and National is offering sweeping roll backs to the rules in place for renters and landlords. A huge new study out of the United States recently found 55 potential indicators that made people more susceptible to falling for misinformation and disinformation - some of which were unique - like how people without health insurance were more likely to fall for general misinformation but FOX news viewers were pre-disposed to believing Covid 19 was a bio-terror attack.
Combined with HOW we use social media, we can see which sort of person spreads these problematic systems of belief and how it grows trust with people.

Dunning-Kruger is often explained as the phenomena of someone being so dumb they don't realise they're dumb but it's a lot more nuanced than that, and includes people that are so smart they don't realise how clever they are!

New research out of the University of Waikato seems to show a link between those men who hold anti-vaccine and anti-mandate views and their, lets say shortcomings...
Actually this Podcast has nothing to do with that at all - this is about the Science Post Effect - the Media Theory that proves that most news media online is shared and commented on without being read. Combined with almost 60% of Social Media users distrust of MSM on social media sites and 51% trust of like minded people and influencers - it's part of the reason for the spread of misinformation and distrust of the media by many and a manipulation tool for grifters.

Dr Will Flavell does two things better than anyone I've ever met!
He strives to learn as much as he can and he strives to help people as much as he can with what he has learnt. After seminal work on his PhD thesis on How non-Māori students play a part in te reo revitalisation, he began studying the Criminal Justice System before chairing the Labour Party Board policy on the same matter. After becoming head of Māori at Rutherford College, he ended up as the only Māori member (and only one born after Muldoon was Prime Minister) elected to the Henderson-Massey Local Board and now he's using that experience to help the next generation of youthful political hopefuls wanting to see representative change at the next election.
In short, Dr Will Flavell is working his hardest to make the world around him a better place for everyone by working as hard and smart as he can.
So I was incredibly grateful he agreed to join me for this interview which I genuinely believe some people will find surprisingly confronting in places but more importantly I think some will find really inspirational. With a population larger than Dunedin, the North Shore is an area where its elected officials represent 150000 people, in a part of the only Super City in Aotearoa. Councillor Richard Hills is one of the two voted in to Auckland City Council to represent the people and the area - and today we finally caught up!
We talk about the ongoing evolving needs of such a large population base, the need to prioritise spending because of the lending caps in place and why he's leading the Council's charge to ensure climate change is seen as an urgent concern to a coastal city that has seen droughts, flooding and other effects of climate change hit it this year.
