Book Reviews and their importance to authors.

  1. Toni. What is so important to have a book review

Kez A book review enlightens those you have a published book, it can lead to sales and promotions of your work.

  1. Toni. A good book review used to be written and for more in-depth way of connecting to your readers, this can be done on Good reads and Amazon these are the more two popular ones. Is that your opinion Kez?

Kez. Most definitely, and still is extremely popular. How ever in the digital world, it comes down to two things. Often missed is the back of the page if it’s powerful it can lead to interviews and promotions. it’s proven that when a person picks your book up, they read what is known as the blurb first.

  1. Toni. What would I look for in a review

Kez. A combination of the authors skill that can either educate you this can happen in the synopsis or the prologue

If it’s a digital review the reviewer has a short window to speak unless its on a promotional platform such as ToniTv or other platforms.

  1. Toni. A book review can be the cause of great conversation, in groups is the entire book read?

Kez. Yes, a book a month is the norm for book groups, That is not to say it can take longer to read a book, its up to the group.

  1. Toni. In a written review what are the main points to bring up and the media changing things that any review can be published immediately.

The Author and Artist Hour with Kez Wickham St George and Toni Lontis

Our guest today is Wendy Marquenie

Wendy spent her childhood years enjoying life within a small family unit, mum, dad, her sister and herself.  Wendy’s childhood years were filled with laughter and the smell of cakes and biscuits baking in the oven.

As Wendy grew and expanded her experiences, she reflected on memories and of what- if’s. The what-ifs began showing her opportunities and she discovered she had the power to change the direction of her life at any moment in time.

Life’s journey as a mother, wife, career person, author, and business owner encouraged a deep desire to leave a legacy, something to be valued by generations to come.

Due to illness, in 2016, Wendy read a book that would change the direction of her life.  The book ‘You Were Born Rich’ was written by Bob Proctor.  Why did it change her life? Wendy was confronted by questions and asked herself, “What is life really?” And “Who Am I?” and others along those lines. The next few years were filled with studying, learning, attending seminars, trying to understand this material that she found so fascinating and exhilarating.  Wendy was learning about herself and what makes her tick.  After attending one of the seminars, Wendy wrote her first book “How to Change Your Life in Six Days” followed by “Big Girl’s Pants”.  Both books reflect on the information Wendy was learning and focusing on bringing out your inner genius to achieve and succeed in life.

What if our young children had this information that empowered them on their journey of self-discovery?    For this reason, Wendy wrote The Genius Books. They empower children to understand thoughts and nurture enthusiasm to create a happy life.

The Genius Books also introduce these lovely characters to inspire children (including the ‘adult children) with enquiring minds to imagine, dream, achieve and succeed.  Learning a way to think, develop self-belief and confidence delivers a world of possibilities to create bright and happy futures.  This is my legacy for future generations. Understanding Mindset is essential for everything we do in life and we are never too young (or too old) to tap into our inner genius.

Life is an incredible journey.  Just one decision in your life can change your destiny, just like it did for Wendy.

Make your best decision and you can: Experience it     -     Believe it    -     Do it     -     Love it

Genius's words in his books: "I am unique as you can see. There is no-one else in the world like me."

Questions for the Guest: Wendy (these questions are a guide only and we may ask other questions as the show progresses – we like the show to remain fluid)

  1. Toni .Wendy, you write in your bio your extraordinary stories are patterned after the lives of the ordinary. Can you enlarge on that, please?

  2. Kez. Your belief that every child is unique and extraordinary, do your books  empower our children to believe in themselves

  3. Toni. Tell us more about where this all began what was the catalyst that started your writing

  4. Kez. From writing a book called big girls pants where has your journey taken you

  5. Toni. I read you were at a big event when the idea of becoming an author was triggered

  6. Kez. What was that experience like Wendy, to realize their was a story in you

  7. Toni.  What  are the age groups and have you written for adults

  8. Kez. Where do your ideas come from Wendy, are they light bulb moments? Or thought out in detail

  9. Toni. I believe your children’s books are Rhymes,  are they stories that rhyme?

  10. Kez. Your first children’s book is ‘You Have a Mind’ how many children’s books since then and what is the next release.

And that’s your lot folks 😊  With Love and light Kez and Toni

Michelle Gardiner is the Founder/Director of The Aspire Series, which is a movement and platform for women who are dedicated to pioneering social change and impact as well as a methodology in facilitating change work in the community.

Michelle has spent fifteen years working in the Australian Child Protection and community sectors, supporting children, young people, and families through some of their most vulnerable life experiences. Through hearing many life stories, Michelle became most passionate about raising the aspirations of young people and women, which has greatly inspired her work with The Aspire Series. This passion parallels Michelle’s own experiences of working to define her own voice and to use this to build a life that she, too, is proud of.

Michelle firmly believes that with a genuine opportunity, meaningful support, and spaces where we can truly love, value, and believe in ourselves, we are able to become so much bolder than we ever imagined. Michelle also believes that great aspirations must be matched with a great capacity to nurture ourselves, in order to create the sweet spot where female leaders blossom. The kind who are not only creating amazing things for themselves and for the world, they are also doing so in a way that sustains them.

It is Michelle’s intention in creating The Aspire Series, that as women, we can become more connected and heart-centered leaders, and use one another to become the best that we can be, for ourselves and the future women who model themselves on us. From this place, we can truly influence social change and contribute to the shifting dynamic of both our local communities and our global society.

We are at a point in time where our stories, experiences, and livelihoods account for so much more than we can imagine and we can not afford to see ourselves in any lesser light. Our stories truly are the gateway to enabling and facilitating so much of the change that we each wish to see in our communities.

Michelle holds a Bachelors of Social and Community Welfare, Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Science (Child Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy), she is a Yoga Teacher (500 hours - Moksha Yoga Academy) with a background in Life Coaching, individual and collective narrative work, leadership, and empowerment program facilitation and trauma-informed practice. Michelle is a published co-author and holds Australian Non For Profit board experience for survivors of sexual abuse and volunteer experience with refugee communities.

About the Guest: Lindy published her first book, Tinker Tailor's Toolbox (For Mending Broken Hearts) last year. She is passionate about kids' mental health. The book is about a boy called Tinker who so desperately wants to help his sister Emily-Belle through a traumatic life event and doesn't quite know where to start. He convinces her to let him help her set up a Happiness Toolbox which she uses to come back to a place of happiness again.

The book is presented as a children's picture book but can be read and enjoyed by all ages. Lindy presents it as a mental wellbeing resource for kids of all ages (from 5 to 105). The story comes with the Happiness Toolbox activity at the back of the book, which works best as a parent or teacher-guided activity, enjoyed together as a family or as a class.

The Happiness Toolbox is where the magic happens. Families can do this together and teachers can use it as a mental wellbeing resource in their classroom. It is an open-ended resource, but it increases feelings of gratitude, self-worth, connectedness, and resilience. Lindy illustrated the book herself using watercolor pencils (as I found illustrators a bit pricey for a self-funded passion project). Having a very particular vision for the book, Lindy chose to self-publish to maintain creative control of the project. She self-published it under her company Shine Anything Bright Press.

The happiness toolbox activity is explored in greater detail in the companion book "Tinker's Tool Book" due for release in September 2021. This follow-up title makes it super simple to set up a Happiness Toolbox and use it as a mental wellbeing resource.

The Colours of Me is quite a diversion away from children's books, which is why Lindy published it under another name, Lindy Wyse. Her story in The Colours of Me is entitled: "Letter from the Lucky One."

A favorite quote from the book is: "Promise me, Tinker," she said, "take your toolbox far and wide. Help other people mend their hearts, so they can be strong inside."

Goethe: “Whatever you think you can do or believe you can do, begin it. Action has magic, grace, and power in it.” It inspires me because I am such a dreamer. When I actually grasp a dream with both hands and honor it by taking action, that is when I have found that true magic happens. I have certainly found this to be true with writing.

Lisa Van der Wielen is a Writer of poetry, children's books, and stories. Lisa is also a Primary School Teacher and a Mum of two beautiful daughters. She has always been lucky enough to call the sunny city of Perth, Western Australia, her home.

Lisa is passionate about working with children and has always had a love for writing, so those things combined have to lead her to become a Children's Author. Lisa is a proud supporter of the local charities: Perth Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald House Charities Western Australia, and Heart Kids.

Lisa loves the beach, nature, dogs, gardening, food, family, and the importance of virtues.... they provide her with inspiration to write engaging children's books. Lisa endeavors to write fun stories that inspire kids to learn, laugh, and enjoy the magic of reading. Being a Mother and Teacher of children, in today's world, has given Lisa a valuable insight into how prevalent Anxiety is in Children. Lisa believes her book DUNE is her best writing yet and is excited to get it out into the world as soon as possible!

Getting your book published isn't cheap! There are illustration, editing, publishing, shipping fees, and marketing costs! So backing Lisa’s project will help get this wonderful book out into the world and you will be rewarded with signed books and lots of other rewards!

Today we want to introduce the audience to Dune

Dune is a sweet and endearing story about how one little girl learns to conquer her anxiety: Sometimes, it’s hard for Grace to overcome her anxiety. She tries and tries, but nothing ever seems to help. But one day, when she visits the beach with her family, she finds a cute little surprise in the sand dunes that might change everything…

Put your toes in the sand, you will be okay.

Let the ripples of water wash your worries away.

A wave is a worry, a worry’s a wave,

Stand up and face it, and learn to be brave.

Why does this book matter? The rates of Anxiety in children of today's modern world are extremely alarming. Some recent global studies suggest that around 1 in 4 children are suffering from some form of anxiety. Therefore, anxiety and worries are a topic that needs to be honestly and openly talked about with children. Books are a wonderful way to introduce topics to children that lead to important discussions and learning.

Luna Lucy (2018)

Aqua Dog (2019)

Title: Kismet – our bucket list novel

Born and educated in South Africa, mother, and daughter, Cynthia and

Ilona lived through the apartheid era. They now embrace life in Australia, a country so similar yet so diverse.

Cynthia teaches and plays bridge; taught computers to seniors and English to migrants, also, she is learning Italian.

Ilona converted her South African law degree; presently runs her own law practice and is a director of a Board for small businesses.

Cynthia and Ilona are a mother and daughter and have recently published their novel Kismet which they began some 20 years ago. We would like to share with your readers our experience of jointly writing a novel, the bonding, the sense of connection, the support, and the ultimate sense of creativity in bringing the story to life .. it is our hope in these times to encourage others in the community to unite in this way - it a healthy and constructive venture …and it doesn’t have to take 20 years!

Kismet, their bucket list novel is their debut.

Questions for the Guests:

TONI – Let's start with Cynthia and I wanted you to tell us a little about what it was like growing up in South Africa during apartheid.

KEZ Ilona what inspired you to write this and why was it on your bucket list?

Life in South Africa.  After all, both of us, my mum and I have lived through the apartheid era and seen the once impossible demise of racial separation materialize.

TONI What is the book about? Kismet is an exploration of the people living in the changed New South Africa.  It’s a story of humanity, love, betrayal, resilience… and finally, how hope sustains. On one level it's about people's lives and relationships, but below this is the deep and influential effect Apartheid had on the various paths they took.

KEZ Why choose fiction? Because it gave us a license to be creative.

TONI I understand this has taken many years in the making, what were some of the highs and lows?

At some point, it seemed that the novel wasn’t progressing as we would have liked.  As such, we took the proverbial sabbatical... time out for ourselves … time to recharge.  Some years later, with renewed passion and commitment, the novel was resuscitated. What started off as a poignant love story, evolved into a murder and a grueling Trial.  Almost two decades later, Kismet is ready to launch.

KEZ For whom is this book's intended audience?  For anyone who has loved and lost and still maintains their idealism.

TONI What do you think you have gained by writing as a mother-daughter team? We would like to share with your readers our experience of jointly writing a novel, the bonding, the sense of connection, the support, and the ultimate sense of creativity in bringing the story to life .. it is our hope in these times to encourage others in the community to unite in this way - it a healthy and constructive venture …and it doesn’t have to take 20 years!

KEZ – has the move from South Africa to Australia being a good one for the family?

TONI – Ilona what are some of the main issues that remain for South Africa even today?

KEZ – do you think there will be any more books from the both of you?

TONI – What’s your hope not only for the book but for the future of South Africa?

Today’s guest is Leigh Hearl, a non-fiction/memoir writer.

Meg Heart wrote this real story to give Rose a voice so the rest of us can hear her truth; to get her story into the world so her pain can heal others, and most of all to open these important conversations that lead to positive change - Published through KMD Books whose mission is to share powerful stories. Carbon Under Pressure is Meg Heart's first book being launched on 5th November 21. It is based on real events that happened to Rose. Rose's story is shocking, riveting, and unforgettable. What happened to Rose could happen to anyone. ‘Rose’ cannot speak out under her real name due to laws that forbid the public disclosure of certain information in her story (like the experience of 2021 Australian of the year Grace Tame). She faced three choices: stay silent; tell a lesser story; or share the raw and real events from her life in a new way. That’s when she found Meg Heart. The team at Meg Heart believes we can only heal as individuals and as a society when the silence is broken, and the truth can be shared without fear. Carbon Under Pressure is only the first of many projects that the team at Meg Heart plans to bring to life and share with the world. Real stories are the most important stories, and the world needs more of them. Leigh Hearl is the founder of Meg Heart. Leigh believes in the power of real stories to change the world.

Today’s guest is Michelle Vos Castle

Perth will always be home to Michelle. She was raised by a builder and lived in Belair, Cobar, Bowen, and Echuca (uhchookuh). Moving around meant Michelle, experienced many different housing arrangements. She went from prestigious Belair to a home on stilts that rocked with movement at the front. One home stood out amongst the lot, the home of my Aunty Nikki. Working in a furniture shop in the prestigious Subiaco, WA, her home décor was bursting with patterns, fabrics, and textures. Michelle wanted one just like it and aspired to the realm of Interior Design. She studied the profession which led to architectural drafting. Michelle was engrossed by the impact that design elements played within a home. She started analyzing her life and the countless houses she had once called home, looking at the shift in life and luck while in each household.

More than 20 years ago Feng Shui was brought to Michelle’s attention, as it rapidly gained momentum and interest in the west. Like many, she’d read about the subject. Friends had their homes healed and her curiosity flourished. A Feng Shui consultant came to my home with pen in hand. Michelle followed her around as she instructed on colors, furniture placement, and an assortment of symbolism. Red needed to be removed from a wall, furniture directions needed adjustment, Jade and Cumquat plants were to be placed at doors, mirrors and pictures re-homed, salt went in certain spots, crystals hung to redirect energy and the list went on. The thought of a change in luck stimulated interest and desire. Michelle was in a tailspin - amazed - this was an exciting new venture and a great excuse for an upskill, and unbeknown to her, also a change in her life direction. Michelle is a Rooster, in the Chinese Zodiac animal and so it was important that she understood WHY she couldn’t have a particular wall red, WHY she needed to place salt and crystals in certain pockets, and WHY was she was affected by mirrors or the symbolism of artwork. There were a lot of WHYs and so Michelles Feng Shui journey started. She began reading any books relating to the topic she could get her hands on. Every wall was painted and furniture textures, colors, and placements were altered to follow Feng Shui principles. It was warm and inviting with lots of energy and light. Her home looked and felt great. Her sister and friends liked the energy and requested Michelle help them achieve similar outcomes, and with that, her journey intensified. Michelle began investing in courses under well-recognized Feng Shui masters. she wanted to really understand the many levels and influence of energy that was Feng Shui, the ’Art of placement and manipulation of energy. Feng Shui as art just clicked, it made sense to her, being mathematical, analytical, and practical. Michelle loved her hills home which taught her so much about Feng Shui, energy, and relationships, but it was only the start. Since then, Michelle has successfully navigated the Feng Shui industry for over 20 years, mastering a deep understanding of the multi-layered science of practice. Michelle has taught Feng Shui, Chinese Astrology, and Metaphysical Studies for Silk Roads Asian Studies at Curtin University and worked extensively on interiors, renovations, and with emerging businesses and established enterprises. After many years of practicing and consulting Michelle became an author, public speaker and now brings her wealth of knowledge and experience to this new Feng Shui series. You will start with simple steps and tips to begin your own journey and learn to master the energy of space within your home and environment. This is the book Michelle wished she had had when she started her adventure! Welcome to the revolution and world of Feng Shui.

Let's start the show with Michelle’s favorite quote:

What you think, you become. What you feel you attract. What you imagine you create. Buddha

We are so powerful within our own energy and must be mindful of what we think and manifest.

Today’s guest is Julie Randall author of Patient 71

This Australian Bestseller tells the true story of Julie Randall, a healthy and happy wife and mother of two teenage daughters living on the picturesque beaches of Sydney. In June of 2012, Julie thought her life was just about perfect, but days after her 50th birthday celebration, her idyllic existence took a shocking and devastating turn. She was diagnosed with stage four metastatic advanced melanoma, handed a brochure on palliative care, and told to get her affairs in order because she only had months to live. Julie refused to crawl into bed and surrender to her presumed fate. She had watched her mother suffer a similar ordeal, but Julie was not about to leave a husband she loved and two daughters who needed her. Instead, she made a promise to them that she would ‘fix it’ and that she would not die. In searching for answers, Julie came across an experimental drug trial taking place in the United States that was showing some promise, but the trial was full at 70 patients and was limited to US citizens only. Through relentless appeals and sheer determination, Julie became PATIENT 71. Gambling against all odds, she left her family to join the trial in Portland, Oregon, not knowing if she would ever return to Sydney. Patient 71 is the story of a woman’s strength and courage, and her triumph over a fatal diagnosis with the undying support of her husband, her daughters, and numerous extended family members. Readers cannot help but to be drawn into the life of this beautiful family and laugh and cry along with them. Julie and her family teach us how to not only survive life’s challenges, but how to live with joy and laughter through them. Julie’s incredible story has become a source of hope and strength to many individuals faced with a life threatening illness, and for the past eight years, Julie has made it her life’s purpose to mentor other cancer patients. She is also an international motivational speaker and has spoken at conferences and cancer fundraising events around the world. Today, Julie continues to spend most of her time in Sydney, thankful for every day with her husband and daughters.

  1. Why did you write the book ?

  2. Who did you write the book for ?

  3. What did you learn from your journey ?

  4. How can you impart that knowledge to help others ?

  5. You talk about the Power of the Promise ? what does that mean ?

  6. You talk about the notion of moving beyond. Just being yourself in order to survive and thrive through life. Can you tell us more about that ?

NOTES – these talking points and questions are a guide and kez and I like to keep the conversation organic and natural.

6 Points to ponder:

  • The story ( while feeling the fit and healthiest I was in a long time. Having a massive seizure at work and being told” you have stage 4 advanced melanoma. You only have months to live”. I could not find one other person that had survived that diagnosis

  • A mothers desperate promise (the setting about find a way to keep it).The power of the promise.. (or this could come later)

  • Managing the mind (fear) monsters ( I all most went into multiple personality syndrome trying to navigate so many aspects around trying to live)

  • Why I wrote the book. (Another Promise) I had never written a thing before. If I didn’t have this experience I would never have known I could become a bestselling Author. It has opened my eyes as to how many of us women have these hidden talents in side of them just waiting to surface.

  • The story around how I was told by a medical biologist that I had to experience ‘Joy” when I was in a diabolical situation. He said that my cells and body would respond in a positive way and help me stay as healthy as possible. So I had to be joyful in the face of extreme adversity.

  • So the lead on from number 4 for me and what I’ve learned is a big one.  I have learnt that surviving and thriving means going beyond “Just being yourself”

We hear that term a lot and I don’t think it’s healthy, unless of course you are 100% happy with your lot.  It encourages people to stay stuck in their comfort zones and not explore what could be possible for them and how true happiness is growing, changing and evolving.  We are often dealing with outdated versions of ourselves and think it’s the truth.

If I was “Just being my old self” I would not have written this book. I would not speak on stage, I would not be doing this interview. I don’t allow fear to get in the way anymore. The fear monsters still come but I have learnt to dance with them.

NOTES – these talking points and questions are a guide and kez and I like to keep the conversation organic and natural.

My first book is a self help book about grief and loss of life, lifestyle, relationships and employment. It is predominantly about my husbands cancer journey and our family’s recovery.

All of the other situations: lifestyle, relationships and employment also require grieving which is not always recognized.

As well, I provide some charts to complete for the living. Each day is a gift and we never know how many days we have left to complete our bucket list for example. There is some peace of mind in having important information collected and conversations had before a serious illness or death.
