We’re not all habitat work all the time here at NDA. We know the importance of enjoying the fruits of your labor and that’s the primary focus of the Coffee and Deer podcast. The show is hosted by NDA President and CEO Nick Pinizzotto and his long-time hunting buddy and friend Mike Groman and focuses on hunting heritage and conservation policy. Nick and Mike are typically joined by expert guests — from NDA staff to outdoor writers to policymakers — to share hunting stories and discuss important conservation issues impacting deer and deer hunting. We hope you’ll join us for a fun and informative discussion over coffee about all things deer.
After 87 episodes of the Coffee and Deer Podcast, we’ve decided to retire the show and instead focus solely on NDA’s Deer Season 365 Podcast. The details behind this decision are explained in this episode.
Also, Nick and The Doctor decided to do their final show by keeping it fun and discussing what items they take to the deer woods that they just can’t live without. Some of their choices will be obvious, but others might catch you by surprise. They also talk about their 2024 hunting seasons including sharing the story of a Pennsylvania big buck down moment.

It’s the most magical time in the deer woods, the rut! If you’re still holding a buck tag you know the best is yet to come in terms of overall deer activity and you’re probably overflowing with optimism. Just because it’s the rut certainly doesn’t guarantee success and there are plenty of things you can do to swing the odds in your favor. While some tactics have been proven effective during this time of year, other factors must be considered if you want to increase your odds for success.
In this episode, Nick and The Doctor break down their rut hunting strategies and talk about what has worked best for them over their combined 80 years of deer hunting experience. They cover some of the more expected approaches as well as some you may not have thought of hoping to help you hang your tag on a buck this fall.

When you talk to the most successful deer hunters, most agree that controlling human odor is the primary factor determining success. Simply put, you can do everything else right but if you are lackadaisical with scent control you are dramatically hurting your odds.
In this episode, Sam Burgeson, President of Wildlife Research Center, joins us to talk scent control and how his company has approached helping hunters in that aspect of their hunting over the years. He shares what he believes are the minimum steps necessary to improve your odds, but cautions there is no 100% bulletproof solution. He also talks about the use of attractant scents, and how the Responsible Hunting Scent Association is helping to improve safety of urine-based products to lessen the likelihood of disease spread.

Seeing the forest for the trees. That can be a challenge in today’s busy world where simply finding time to be in the woods deer hunting is a welcome reprieve. Arguably, being in a hurry in the deer woods isn’t part of the best recipe for success considering how much we’re probably missing because we’re laser-focused on getting to a stand or blind without regard for the greater environment around us.
In this episode, Nick and The Doctor are joined by Master Naturalist and Guide Dan Gardoqui of Lead with Nature to talk about how birds and other animals tell us what’s happening in the woods around us and we’re likely missing it. That’s right. The birds might be giving your presence away or letting you know to be ready for the deer coming your way. This episode will have you looking at how you approach hunting in ways you likely haven’t before, and you’ll even get to hear some of Dan’s bird sound imitations!

It’s time to hunt deer! With hunting seasons in or about to start in most places in the country, it’s time to talk deer hunting. Saddle hunting has grown steadily in popularity in recent years. More and more hunters are setting their climbing and fixed position stands aside, instead opting for the lightweight versatility of a saddle. Still, saddle hunting remains a mystery to many hunters and can be intimidating at first glance. Finding yourself in a tussle with a grizzly bear isn’t something anyone imagines for themselves and even with top training on how to deal with that situation, the outcome is typically not good. That’s exactly the position Amber Kornak found herself in just as her career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was getting started, but her quick thinking and determination helped her survive the incident, which she says made her resolve to continue her career in wildlife conservation even stronger. She shares her story with Nick in The Doctor in this episode, and explains why she volunteers for NDA despite her already busy work schedule. She tells the story of how her childhood growing up in Michigan hunting with her dad eventually led to her love of conservation and wanting to make it her career. She also explains why despite her own encounter, she doesn’t think anyone should be afraid to hunt in grizzly country.

Research shows that if you don’t grow up in a family of hunters or you’re not close to someone who does, chances are you won't become a hunter yourself. It can be an even bigger barrier if many around you are opposed to hunting and living a vegetarian lifestyle.
NDA’s Pennsylvania Field to Fork Coordinator, Elizabeth Kligge, not only overcame those obstacles, she developed a love for hunting and with it a strong desire to teach others who’ve always wanted to try it but never had the chance.

Just about everyone is fascinated with antlers, even those who don’t hunt deer. Not only are they cool to look at and get excited about as a hunter, but a ton can be learned from them even when they’ve been dropped to the ground by shedding bucks. In this episode, Nick and The Doctor are joined by Brian Peterson, Coordinator of the Master of Science Biology Online Program at the University of Nebraska-Kearney who talks about a number of antler-focused research projects he’s been involved with. In our previous episode, our guest Kip Adams talked about the need for hunters to shoot more deer in many areas of the country, and one of the obstacles hunters face is not needing additional venison for themselves.
We invited Jeremy Brown from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Ronnie Ritter from Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry to talk about their unique venison snack stick program and how the state’s Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) is helping.
In some areas of the country, one in four households struggle with food insecurity, which is a startling statistic. All of us can work together to harvest more deer and get donated venison into the hands of the families that need it most. This unique program in Arkansas is setting a fine example for others to follow.

Most hunters might find it hard to believe that only 41% of licensed deer hunters harvest just one deer. Equally surprising is only 17% of hunters kill more than one deer. You can find these statistics and many more in the NDA 2024 Deer Report, which you can download for free.
Not taking enough antlerless deer off the landscape is becoming an increasing problem in many areas of the country, so we invited Kip Adams, NDA’s Chief Conservation Officer, to be a guest on the show to explain the issue. He also talks about the history of balanced herd management and NDA’s role in improving deer herds since its inception as QDMA in 1988.
Also in this episode, our hosts talk a little turkey hunting as another tag has been punched, this time by The Doctor, who shot his best gobbler ever on opening morning in Pennsylvania. It might be a long way until deer seasons get started, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had in the great outdoors!

Admittedly, it’s not a lot of fun to talk about chronic wasting disease (CWD) and its negative impact on deer populations, hunting, and overall wildlife conservation. That doesn’t mean there are no bright spots, however, and our guests on this episode provide some hope in the form of improved testing methodologies to detect the disease.

There are many effective ways to plant a food plot but two particular approaches, no-till planting and crimping, continue to gain popularity. In this episode, Paul Hollis, owner of PH Outdoors, joined Nick and The Doctor to talk about these techniques and their benefits. Paul also discussed in detail the no-till planters and crimpers his company manufactures, some of which can be pulled with a suitably sized ATV or side-by-side. Matt Light played in the NFL for 11 years for the New England Patriots and while there won three Super Bowls, nine division championships, and five conference championships. He played left tackle and protected Tom Brady’s blind side for more than a decade after having done the same for Drew Brees while playing at Purdue in college.
While his success on the gridiron is remarkable, he has always had a deep passion for the outdoors, conservation, and deer hunting largely driven by the long legacy of hunters and outdoor writers in his family. Now retired from football, he has more time to pursue his passion while also making sure to pass it on to others.
In addition to Matt’s personal journey, he shares one of the more incredible turkey hunting tales you’ll ever hear! The attacks by anti-hunters and animal welfare groups against sportsmen are constant. While groups like the National Deer Association (NDA) and our many conservation partners are working daily to implement conservation measures and policies that benefit fish and wildlife, others are working directly against the effort to put an end to hunting, trapping, and fishing.

Did you know there are wildlife health professionals scattered across the country working day and night to keep animals and people safe from wildlife-borne diseases? These good people are truly working on the front lines of wildlife management and it’s likely most people have no idea that it’s happening.
That’s why we invited Wildlife Health Technician, Ian Gereg, to join us on this episode to talk about the wide array of things he and his colleagues work on to keep us and wildlife healthy. He works for the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (PennVet) and is part of the Pennsylvania Wildlife Futures Program.
He explains to Nick and The Doctor how he has no idea what he will encounter on a given day and shares stories of some of the craziest things that have happened to him in the field. He also talks about some of the current research he is involved with. The National Deer Association works in partnership with PennVet and the Pennsylvania Game Commission as part of the Wildlife Futures Program, particularly on chronic wasting disease and other deer management related matters.

While assessing tooth replacement and tooth wear can be an effective way to age deer to a certain age, or at least get you close, there’s no more accurate way than having a tooth analyzed under a microscope using the cementum annuli technique.
Our guest in this episode is Heather Stevens, owner of Wildlife Analytical Laboratories and founder of deerage.com. She shares with Nick and The Doctor how her business got started and how she wants to make it easier and more affordable than ever for hunters to have their deer aged accurately.

It wasn’t long after Ohio hunter Jason Thomas walked up on his buck of a lifetime that word started getting out that a potential new Ohio typical record may have fallen. A few weeks later a MeatEater headline read, “Ohio Hunter Kills One of World’s Biggest Whitetails,” and Outdoor Life followed with “Ohio Crossbow Hunter Stalks into Position on a Bedded 200-Class Buck.” More would follow from other sources, but one thing was certain. The whitetail hunting world was now aware of Thomas’s enormous whitetail, and he graciously joined the Coffee and Deer podcast to share his story with us.
It often doesn’t work out when a hunter targets a single buck for a season. It’s hard enough to take any buck, let alone limit yourself to a particular deer that you may not even see during the season. Thomas had a history with the deer and decided he was going to do everything he could to put himself in position for a shot, and his hard work eventually paid off. This isn’t a story about a hunter who simply got lucky by being in the right spot at the right time. Thomas’s actions leading up to and during the season set the stage for an inevitable encounter, and his decision to make a bold move on that fateful day sealed the deal. This is an episode you don’t want to miss.

The winter deer season is here! After weeks of being pursued by hunters, starting with archery equipment and eventually firearms, deer are more cautious than ever, making it even more challenging to get into shooting range.
Difficult doesn’t mean impossible though, and in this episode, Nick and The Doctor invited Mark Kenyon of MeatEater and the Wired to Hunt podcast to talk about what it takes to fill tags after the holidays.
The winter deer hunting season is unique and requires tactics you may not have used earlier in the season, as well as some thinking outside the box. You’ll hear what tactics have worked as our three veteran hunters talk about their experiences.

Many people watch outdoors television and dream about working in the content creation side of the industry. It’s a question we’re asked about often, so we invited videographer and photographer Dylan Lenz to the podcast to talk about what it takes to be successful in outdoors television and content creation.
Dylan’s primary project is creating content with Jeff Sturgis of Wildlife Habitat Solutions, but he also does a lot of freelance work for some of the biggest names and companies in the industry such as First Lite and MeatEater. He explains that while he loves what he does, there’s a lot of hard work, long nights, and dedication required, which is the side most people don’t see when they’re watching their favorite hunting shows on television.
Dylan also shares with Nick and The Doctor where he got his inspiration, and how he keeps his production schedule full throughout the year by venturing outside the industry. It’s an inside look into the fascinating world of outdoors and hunting industry content creation.

As if the time involved in being successful in the classroom and performing at the highest level of college football isn’t demanding enough, Cade Brock and a few of his teammates are making a difference by introducing non-hunting and fishing teammates to the outdoors. They founded DGD Outdoors, eventually incorporating it as a non-profit, and now they’re making a mark on people’s lives.
DGD Outdoors is a player-run business connecting fans and athletes to the great outdoors. The organization is a collection of University of Georgia football players who enjoy the outdoors – hunting, fishing, and the conservation of wildlife. They introduce newcomers to what they know and enjoy about being true sportsmen. Their goal is to promote the importance of conservation and spread the values of being in the outdoors. Cade joins Nick and The Doctor to talk about how the program got started, and where they hope to take it from here.

The National Deer Association recently teamed up with Baptist Homes & Healthcare Ministries to put on some very special Field to Fork programs for the senior residents of the Baptist Home of Arcadia Valley in Ironton, Missouri and the Baptist Home Ozark in Ozark, Missouri.
In Ironton, five “reactivated” hunters were given the opportunity to go out on the 160-acre campus property to try and harvest a deer with Mission Crossbows on opening day of Missouri’s archery season. The Ozark Senior Field to Fork event recruited a few new hunters and reactivated some former hunters.
A total of six hunters joined NDA for two days of education, crossbow shooting, and deer hunting including 93-year-old Bessie Hume, who had never deer hunted before. In this touching episode, Nick and The Doctor talk with Baptist Homes and Healthcare and Ministries’ CEO, Rodney Harrison, and NDA’s Deer Outreach Specialist, Cheyne Matzenbacher, about the impact these hunts are having on the residents there, as well as those helping them through the program.

They filled a couple of tags over the last few days and are now focused on mature rutting bucks as we head into the most exciting time of year to be a deer hunter. It’s that magical time of year in the deer woods; the rut! For most hunters, this is the time of year that the day-to-day gets set aside for some time on the stand so in this episode we’re talking with outdoor communicator and veteran whitetail hunter Josh Honeycutt about strategies that we hope can help you be successful. After the excitement from the first few days of deer season wears off, many hunters get frustrated during the early part of the pre-rut for a number of reasons, ranging from lack of deer sightings to warm temperatures to the perception of an October lull.
In this episode, Nick and The Doctor share their personal tactics for filling tags during the early part of the season. They discuss the best available science that supports many of their hunting decisions, and even tackle controversial topics like whether or not the October lull is real and whether or not cold fronts have an impact on deer movement. When you ask most hunters who have successfully gotten close to mature deer what their number one priority is when heading to the woods, they’ll tell you scent control and hunting in the right wind conditions. You could be hunting the best spot in the country with mature bucks everywhere, but if you don’t control your scent, it won’t matter. A whitetail’s nose is its number one line of defense so if you’re serious about consistently achieving positive results, managing scent control should be your highest priority.

If you’ve been hunting for more than a few years, you’ve undoubtedly shot a deer that didn’t go down immediately, necessitating a tracking endeavor. With any luck, the tracking job is short, and your deer is recovered quickly. In some cases, though, it may take longer than anticipated and in the worst cases, you find yourself scratching your head wondering what went wrong and what to do next.
There are a lot of factors that go into tracking a hit deer, and some of them that can make it more difficult are out of your control, like weather, dense vegetation, property lines, or just bad luck. Thanks to technology, a tough tracking job can end with a successful recovery with a little help from above.
Mike Yoder joins the show and talks with Nick and The Doctor about Drone Deer Recovery, a business he started when he realized the opportunity in front of him. Using his skill with drones combined with thermal imagery technology, he’s helping hunters across the country recover hit deer, and the business has already grown beyond his wildest dreams.

We are often contacted by deer hunters who own and manage land in states that allow hunting deer with the use of hounds about conflicts when hounds enter their private property. NDA does not have a policy opposing hunting deer with the use of hounds but instead relies on state wildlife management agencies to handle decisions related to method of pursuit or take.
NDA strongly supports the rights of private landowners and fully understands the frustration of stationary deer hunters who have had their hunts interrupted by dogs. In this episode, Nick and The Doctor are joined by Chris Powell of the HoundsmanXP Podcast to discuss this issue.

The MeatEater Working for Wildlife Tour brings attention to the critical work hunters and anglers are doing to create, conserve, and restore wildlife habitat through volunteer on-the-ground projects. These events include everything from creating brush piles, wildlife openings and early successional habitat, to cleaning up debris on public lands, improving deer forage, collecting acorns for native reforestation, and invasive species removal.
Project leader Mark Kenyon joins the show to talk about the tour and how you can lend a hand to put important conservation work on the ground. Three NDA projects located in Kentucky, Mississippi, and Idaho will be featured as part of the effort. He also talks with Nick and The Doctor about what’s new with him, as well as what’s on the horizon for Wired to Hunt, and MeatEater.

Have you ever wondered how much leaving your deer’s gut pile behind benefits other wildlife, or how many different critters visit it for an opportunistic snack? The Offal Wildlife Watching Project was designed to answer those questions and much more. It is a research and citizen science project aimed at better understanding the scavenging of deer gut piles provided by hunters. Although it’s focused in Minnesota, hunters can participate nationwide.
Dr. Ellen Candler is a Postdoctoral Associate and the University of Minnesota and also the coordinator of the Offal Wildlife Watching Project at the University of Minnesota Extension. She joins the show to talk about the project, some of its exciting findings, and where she hopes to take it in the future.

The Coffee and Deer podcast has reached a milestone! Believe it or not, this is the 50thepisode and Nick and The Doctor are celebrating by talking with the show’s first-ever guest, Lindsay Thomas, Jr. Lindsay is NDA’s long-time Chief Communications Officer and was the one who originally conceived of the idea that NDA could have two podcasts. Now the Coffee and Deer and Deer Season 365 podcasts have released a combined 100 shows. It’s hard to believe how fast the time has gone, but the future looks bright for the show and we’re already thinking about Episode 100!
In this episode, the guys talk about the show's history while also taking advantage of the opportunity to speak with Lindsay about what the NDA Communications team has been up to. Dogs are remarkable. They’re much more than just "man’s best friend." When trained, dogs can help humans with a long list of tasks ranging from finding bombs and drugs to searching for lost people, detecting low blood sugar and other health concerns, and much more. Also on the list is detecting wildlife diseases including chronic wasting disease (CWD). In this episode, Nick and The Doctor talk with Brenna Babiy who is the Conservation K9 Supervisor and handler at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s (Penn Vet) Wildlife Futures Program, about how her team’s work can someday change the way CWD is found and tracked in the wild.
Brenna’s team is part of a greater partnership with the Pennsylvania Game Commission known as the Pennsylvania Wildlife Futures Program. NDA is also a partner in the effort. While not many people enjoy talking about CWD, this work is exciting and is showing a lot of promise for helping manage the spread of the disease. It’s a bit of good news about a topic that typically has little.

Let’s face it. Most people don’t enjoy knocking on doors to seek hunting or fishing permission. Not only is it awkward for the asker, but it’s also a disruption to the landowner and sometimes an unwelcome one. While it can work and many are still successful using this tactic, it’s not ideal for most. This is where LandTrust comes in.
LandTrust was founded to make communication between landowners and outdoor recreationists easier. In this episode, Nick and The Doctor are joined by the founder and CEO of LandTrust, Nic Decastro. Nic took his idea for bridging the gap between landowners and outdoors enthusiasts and combined it with his business background to create a fast-growing company. He talks about the benefits of accessing private land through his company and also shares several success stories.

Do you feel that deer management only extends to your boundary line? Or, that what occurs beyond the border has traditionally been looked upon as the wild west? Wildlife Cooperatives (Co-ops) are changing that mindset. A Wildlife Co-op is comprised of neighboring landowners and/or hunters working toward common interests.
NDA has long recognized the importance of a cooperative effort among neighbors to promote healthy deer herds, healthy habitats, and for improved hunting quality. Cooperatives driven by deer management also enrich broader landscape biodiversity and conservation, which is beneficial for game and non-game species alike.
In this episode, NDA’s Deer Outreach Specialist Cheyne Matzenbacher joins Nick and The Doctor to talk about Co-ops, and how to get one started in your area. Cheyne shares success stories from his work, and The Doctor also talks about his personal experience being part of a Co-op in New York.

It’s hard to beat a good, old deer hunting story. Shed antler hunting season is upon us and turkey seasons are opening across the country, which makes this the perfect time to have Mark Boardman from Vortex Optics join the show. Nick and The Doctor talk with Mark about something you may not have thought of, and that’s the importance of using binoculars to help you in your quest for shed antlers.

Traveling out of the local area to hunt is steadily gaining in popularity. While going on a destination hunting trip can be exciting and rewarding, it can be equally frustrating and disappointing if hunters don’t properly plan for the excursion. There are few people who travel to hunt more than our guest, Melissa Bachman, who has seen and done it all at this stage in her career. Melissa is the longtime host and producer of Winchester Deadly Passion and she joins Nick and The Doctor to share her tips and experience for hunters venturing far from home in the coming season. She also shares stories about when things didn’t go according to plan, and how she handled those situations. Both outfitted and do-it-yourself hunts are discussed. Our hearing is one of our five finely tuned senses and arguably the most likely to be compromised by our lack of protection of it. This is particularly true for hunters and recreational shooters who often put their hearing in danger by pulling the trigger on firearms, even with lower calibers, without proper ear protection. High-intensity impulse sounds will permanently damage the inner workings of the ear, and people who shoot firearms are at a higher risk of noise-induced hearing loss than those who do not shoot. Sometimes damage can occur with just one shot taken without hearing protection.
In this episode, we’re joined by audiologist Dr. Grace Sturdivant who is the owner and founder of OtoPro Technologies to discuss the threat of hearing loss and what can be done to mitigate it by hunters and shooters. She explains the causes and effects of hearing loss and talks about the unique way her company can help clients save their hearing.

Did you know that 38.3 million Americans suffer from critical hunger every day, or that one in six children lack the daily nutrition necessary for healthy growth? Imagine a situation where you were forced to secure a loan to put gas in your vehicle and food on your table. Unfortunately, that’s the reality for a startling number of people and much of it flies under the radar of awareness.
The good news is, deer hunters can help by sharing a portion of their venison each season. Thanks to programs like Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH), more than 22 million servings of venison have been provided since the group’s founding in 1997. You might be surprised to know that one deer can provide up to 160 meals for a family in need, so imagine the impact you’re making when you decide to share meat from a deer you tagged.
Nick and The Doctor are joined on the show by Josh Wilson, Executive Director of FHFH, and Peter Churchbourne, Director of the NRA Hunters Leadership Fund, to talk about the importance of hunters stepping up and giving back.

It’s hard to believe that the 2022 fall hunting season has come to an end. We spend so many months preparing and thinking about the coming season that the few months of hunting we have seems to flash by in the blink of an eye. In this episode, Nick and The Doctor recap their seasons and share stories of filled tags and missed opportunities. More than just telling hunting stories, the guys share what they felt went well, and what could have gone better during the season. They also share their B-Team stories with one involving physical pain and another about getting caught with your pants down, literally!

Any seasoned deer hunter will tell you that there’s nothing more exhilarating than hunting a particular buck over more than one season. It’s a rarity for most to get more than a second season to match wits with the same deer let alone three, but that’s the challenge Heartland Bowhunter Co-host Michael Hunsucker faced while engaged in a chess match with a giant buck he named Floppy. Oddly, the Missouri monster was quite visible over the years, which made it even more frustrating for Hunsucker when he couldn’t get into bow range. At one point the deer ghosted him and he thought maybe it had fallen to a nearby rifle hunter, but eventually the two reconnected. In this episode you’ll hear the story of the final hunt for Floppy directly from Hunsucker, and it’s one that will have you on the edge of your seat!

It doesn’t matter if you have the best bow or gun or have the luxury of hunting great land crawling with big whitetail bucks if you’re not able to put adequate time in the deer woods. Being comfortable in any weather condition is key to successful hunting and our friends at First Lite have all day comfort nailed. During a recent hunt in Kentucky, Nick sat down with First Lite’s Senior Whitetail Category Manager, Gregg Farrell, to talk about what goes into the making of their gear before it hits the market and also get into some whitetail hunting strategy. Gregg talks about the importance of wearing the right layers and shares what his favorite First Lite product is. He also shares the story of his journey that eventually led him to the company and how being home and hunting with his friends and family tops any of his other hunts each season.
Just when you thought the guys couldn’t outdo themselves for the B-Team Report, Nick tells the tale of how he now has a few hundred dollar’s worth of damage to his Polaris Ranger, and also ended up down a hat and pair of glasses. To add insult to injury, he also describes why his target buck is still safely roaming the hills of Pennsylvania. The duo provides a full update on their seasons so far, while discussing their hopes for the next couple weeks.

There’s a reason this time of year is often referred to as the Super Bowl of whitetail hunting. It’s the rut and NDA’s Chief Conservation Officer, Kip Adams, joins Nick and The Doctor to talk about their favorite rut-hunting strategies while also debunking the many myths surrounding the rut. Regardless of whether or not you have the best gear on the market and are hunting the best properties and the best spots, none of that will matter if you’re not adequately controlling human odors. In fact, most hunters who consistently tag mature bucks will tell you that their number one tactic is hunting with the wind in their face while taking care to hide their presence by limiting human scent.
Sam Burgeson is the president of Wildlife Research Center, the most well-known hunting scent and human scent control products company in the country and he joins Nick and The Doctor to discuss the importance of scent control in the deer woods. The guys also talk about their favorite techniques for fooling a deer’s sense of smell. In addition, Sam shares stories from the origin of Wildlife Research Center, a company that truly started in his father’s garage with nothing but a few ideas from his dad and uncle.

The Armed Forces Initiative of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers is an effort designed to help serve the Veteran and active-duty military community by treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury(TBI) through direct engagement in the outdoors and involvement in the organization’s robust public lands advocacy and conservation work. The program aims to provide veterans with the three things they need most: time outdoors, a community, and a mission.
Nick and The Doctor are joined by the program’s coordinator, Trevor Hubbs, who talks about the value of the program and its evolution from just an idea in 2020 to a program that has more than 30 camps planned through October. The initiative has 378 veterans registered for events in 20 states and on 17 active military installations including moose hunts in Alaska, salmon fishing in the Great Lakes, mountain whitetail hunting in North Carolina, and desert quail in Southern California.

Deer season is finally here and it’s our annual preseason preview show where Nick and the Doctor talk about their plans for the 2022-23 hunting season while sharing a few of their favorite tips and tactics. Joining them on the show is Jason Redd from Timber Ninja Outdoors. A lifelong hunter, Jason chases whitetails in his home state of North Carolina and a few Midwestern states. The guys cover everything from their expectations for the season to whether they prefer an aggressive or more passive approach to hunting. They also share their number one tip for getting to within shooting range of mature bucks, and you won’t want to miss it as you prepare for your season.

We have a treat for Coffee and Deer listeners in this episode! The highest scoring typical whitetail buck ever shot in the United States was taken last year in Decatur County, Indiana by Dustin Huff, and he joins Nick and NDA’s Chief Communications Officer, Lindsay Thomas, Jr.
The 211 4/8 inch net typical Hoosier State giant fell just 2 1/8 inches short of the world record whitetail shot by Milo Hanson in Saskatchewan, Canada in 1993. Here’s the best part. Dustin had no idea the buck was using the property he had been hunting since he was a kid. The same property where he shot his first deer. After hearing the interview we think you’ll agree that Dustin was the right guy to take this magnificent whitetail. On top of his success as a deer hunter, Dustin is also an accomplished country music singer and songwriter splitting his time between Nashville and his home state of Indiana. We talk about his music career as well as the exciting hunt that has changed his life.

If you want to start a good debate among deer hunters, start talking about your list of the best hunters in the country, and let the fun begin. The reality is there are a lot of outstanding hunters who consistently take mature bucks who you’ve never heard of. Nick Skinner of Iowa Land Company is one of those hunters. Nick’s humble personality doesn’t allow him to brag, so Nick and The Doctor do that for him in this episode.
While he has many great bucks on his resume, the focus of the conversation is the 191-inch buck he arrowed in 2019, which he and his wife refer to as the Honeymoon Buck. This is yet another story of redemption as the first encounter Nick had with the buck didn’t go as planned, but thanks to a little help from his wife, as well as luck and persistence, this story comes to an exciting conclusion. This episode continues our series of exciting deer stories, which we’re featuring as deer seasons are opening or are about to open around the country.
We also get some tips from our guest about what to do if you’re considering buying hunting land. It’s more attainable than you might think. For most of us having the privilege of seeing, let alone getting close to, a buck carrying almost 200 inches of antler is more of a dream than reality. Knowing the deer exists and getting more than one chance to hang a tag on him seems like something out of a fairy tale, but that’s the position Georgia hunter Cory Croft found himself in last fall. Some deer stories are short and start and end the first day a hunter lays eyes on the animal. Others play out more like novels and the game of cat and mouse goes on for several years. The story of Croft’s 196-inch South Georgia monster is just that, and it includes a series of twists and turns that will have you on the edge of your seat. This story is the first in a series of hunting stories Nick and The Doctor will be sharing on the show over the next few episodes as hunting seasons approach.

The use of suppressors for hunting and shooting is steadily growing in popularity. There are many benefits to using one ranging from hearing protection to reduced recoil to spooking less game. Despite their benefits, many shooters have the misconception that obtaining one is too cumbersome and not worth the hassle or expense.
Our guest on this episode is Brandon Maddox, the founder and CEO of Silencer Central, and he explains how his company has made it easier than ever to add a suppressor to your gun cabinet. In case you missed it or have been too consumed with life to notice, July 4th weekend is this coming weekend. For many of us, that means time to dust off the trail cameras and get them back into the woods. Antler growth by this time of year is starting to give an indication of what to expect from bucks by fall, and who doesn’t love getting photos of fawns, turkey poults, or other baby critters that abound this time of year? That makes Paul Annear of Cuddeback the perfect guest for this episode. Paul, also an avid deer hunter and outdoor writer, shares some of his favorite strategies for getting the most out of trail cameras and he talks with Nick and The Doctor about everything from where to place your cameras to how to store and manage your favorite images.

Sometimes when you have a passion for something, you just have to throw caution to the wind and go for it. That’s exactly what our guest Megan Plete Postol did, and it led to her becoming an award winning journalist. She recently won first place in the Outdoor Writers Association of America’s Excellent in Craft Awards in the hunting and shooting sports category for her article, “Hunters of Color Collabs to Produce Deer Hunt for New Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Hunters.” This story was derived from a Field to Fork event where The Nature Conservancy (TNC), New York Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, Hunters of Color, New York Department of Environmental Conservation and NDA came together to host a mentored hunting event for aspiring hunters from the Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) community.
Megan is also an avid hunter that owns five beagles and loves pursuing rabbits, and she also shot her first archery deer last season. She shares the exciting story of the hunt during the show. This is also an Ask NDA Anything episode and Nick and the Doctor answer listener questions about hunting from the ground and NDA internship opportunities. Did you know that at any given time there are probably at least 100 different bills in play at all levels of government that involve deer or deer hunting? This is why NDA has made participating in deer and conservation policy one of our top priorities. While it’s not what gets most deer enthusiasts excited and doesn’t bring the adrenaline rush of an approaching buck, engaging in deer and conservation policy is critical to ensuring the future of deer and deer hunting, and NDA is lucky to have Director of Policy, Torin Miller, on our team.
In this episode, Nick and The Doctor talk with Torin about why working on policy matters is so important, and they also review some current pieces of legislation that deer hunters should know about. The hosts even give Torin a chance to boast about filling both of his spring gobbler tags.

Doug Duren is one of the most dedicated conservationists of our time. He’s an Aldo Leopold fan, and his passion for conservation led him to coining the catchy phrase, “It’s not ours, it’s just our turn.” He is a contributor to MeatEater and is a regular guest on the MeatEater podcast.
Doug joins Nick and the Doctor to discuss a range of hunting and conservation topics and he shares why he is particularly dedicated to getting the word out about chronic wasting disease when so many others shy away from it. He talks about managing his family farm that has been in the family for 120 years, and how his management of the property differs from that of his father. Part of that management involves sharing it with his friends and also as a tool to recruit new hunters. He believes private landowners can do more for conservation and he is leading by example.
Also in this episode we answer three Ask NDA Anything questions ranging from food plots to fawns to saddle hunting. Nick shares the story of his not so incredible journey home from a recent trip to Austin, TX and the guys rehash their turkey hunting adventures, which are always more entertaining than productive.

Digital mapping and GPS technologies have revolutionized the ways in which sportsmen and women navigate public lands. By pinpointing a user’s real-time location on the landscape, handheld GPS units and smartphone applications allow hunters and anglers to know exactly where they stand relative to property boundaries and other key landmarks.
Unfortunately, when it comes to public lands, incomplete and inconsistent mapping data prevents hunters and anglers as well as land management agencies—including the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and Army Corps of Engineers—from utilizing the full benefit of these technologies.
The recently passed Modernizing Access to our Public Land (MAPLand) Act promises to bring our public land mapping records into the 21st century by digitizing the approximate 32,000 recorded easements that are currently only available in paper form. This will ultimately make it much easier for sportsmen to find access to public lands. Joel Webster, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership’s (TRCP) Vice President of Western Conservation joins Nick and the Doctor to explain the Act and discuss TRCP’s close partnership with NDA on conservation policy matters.

Great joy and indescribable sorrow. You get a little bit of both in this emotional episode of the Coffee and Deer podcast. Nick and the doctor start the show by talking a little turkey as they recap Nick’s recent hunts in Delaware where he was able to call in a gobbler for governor John Carney on opening morning, and then one for himself the next day out. The guys talk through each hunt and offer tips from their many years of experience.
In answering this episode’s Ask NDA Anything question, they give their opinions on why a listener seems to find more shed antlers while turkey hunting than he does when specifically targeting sheds.
The show closes with Nick sharing the story of having to say goodbye to his best friend, his 14 year-old red ticked hound, Arrow. Doing more for deer, hunters, and overall wildlife conservation is woven throughout NDA’s current strategic plan, and one of the ways we’re accomplishing that is by leading on-the-ground habitat work with our team.
With more than 16 years working for the organization, Matt Ross, NDA’s Director of Conservation, is ideally suited to oversee much of this work. One of his biggest projects is a public land forest and habitat improvement project that NDA does in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service.
Matt joins Nick and the Doctor to talk about this important project and how he expects this important work to grow in the coming years. He also talks about his long tenure with the organization and shares what he’s most proud of as well as some of his favorite moments.

The term swamp donkey is sometimes used by hunters when referring to giant bucks found in swampy or lowland habitats. There are also several hunting-related products that include the term swamp donkey in their name. The guest of this episode, Ron Haas, has taken several bucks in the swamps of southern Delaware worthy of this popular descriptor but none more impressive than his 2020 11-point.
In addition, Ron is a professional habitat manager for the Delaware Wild Lands Conservancy and is among the best woodsmen in the country. He is also a longtime NDA member and his work led to the property he manages being certified as NDA’s first Legacy Lands property. Ron talks with Nick and The Doctor about how he was able to arrow the giant buck on Halloween night while also sharing some of his extensive habitat enhancement expertise and experience.

You often hear deer hunter saying things like, “It’s going to be hard to top that one,” after they or a buddy shoots a trophy buck. In the case of South Carolina deer hunter Lucy Mahon, it’s going to be nearly impossible to outdo herself by taking a more unique trophy than she did during the 2021 season. A few weeks ago, Lucy, a dedicated Coffee and Deer Podcast listener, shared photos of her beautiful eight-point buck with a unique spotted hide. Her first bow was fashioned by her father out of a stick and string when she was a child. Now, Jen Delaney can blow out candles and put an arrow through the opening of a spinning wine bottle and does it with flare as she taunts her doubters. Those are just a couple of her many trick shots she pulls off with her traditional archery gear. Her talent combined with a natural ability to entertain has made her the most popular archer on TikTok, and her Freedom and Feathers audience is growing by the day with more than 1.2 million followers. Even though the answer to that might be an obvious “yes” for most, not everyone agrees largely due to concerns about competition for places to hunt and the ability to acquire tags. Swing and a miss! It happens to even the most experienced hunters and skilled shooters and not coming through at the moment of truth at some point in a hunting career is inevitable. Being able to recover quickly from these major disappointments is important so that the next opportunity can be taken advantage of. If you want to hear a deer hunting story that’s sure to give you goosebumps and may even bring a tear to your eye, don’t miss this episode. Nick and The Doctor are joined by Kathleen Savaiano who went on her first deer hunt and found success as a recent participant in an NDA Field to Fork event in Missouri. She tells the story of her long journey from an initial interest in trying hunting to the moment she squeezed the trigger. Kathleen talks about the barriers that kept her from hunting sooner, and she describes her flood of emotions as she approached her downed doe. Finally, she describes her entire experience as a Field to Fork participant and how the thoroughness of the program was exactly what she was hoping for as a first-time hunter. Did you know that hunting privileges are continually under attack by animal rights activists and even some deceptively named organizations like the Humane Society of the United States and Center for Biological Diversity? Luckily, we have groups like the Sportsmen’s Alliance working on these issues and in this episode Nick and The Doctor talk with their CEO, Evan Heusinkveld. He explains that even though deer hunting typically isn’t directly being threatened, all anti-hunting issues matter and it’s up to everyone who hunts to be aware and involved. Evan warns us to be careful about who we’re supporting financially as these groups are good at raising money from people who aren’t aware of their intentions related to stopping hunting. There are a lot of nuances to the way anti-hunting groups work to accomplish their agendas, and he discusses what it’s going to take to beat them at their own game.

It’s hard to believe, but with the peak of the rut behind us many hunters have moved on from their bows and regular archery seasons and are either picking up their firearms or are looking ahead to some winter hunting. In this episode, Nick and “The Doctor” recap their hunting seasons so far and tell the stories behind three recent successful hunts. Nick tells the story of his Halloween Eve buck and Mike shares tales of his November doe and buck kills. They guys share the tactics they used that helped them fill their tags while also discussing what they felt they did well, and what they can improve on. They also offer their thoughts about what they’re most disappointed about so far, and what they’re most optimistic about moving forward.

If you’ve never tried hunting whitetails with a decoy, you’re missing out on an adrenaline-filled experience. In this episode, Nick and “The Doctor” are joined by the President of Montana Decoy, CJ Davis, and the guys discuss deer decoy tactics that the novice and experienced decoy user will find useful. You won’t want to miss CJ’s story about his most memorable hunt with a decoy, which is sure to make you laugh hard enough to cry. In addition to CJ’s decoy expertise, he’s had a long and successful outdoor career and has worked for organizations such as the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Quality Deer Management Association, which is now NDA of course. It’s November and that means it’s the Super Bowl of deer season for most whitetail hunters. This episode is all about hunting the rut and Nick and “The Doctor” were joined by legendary outdoor writer and Field and Stream Field Editor, Scott Bestul. Scott has more than 30 years of experience writing about whitetails and whitetail hunting, and he’s also an accomplished hunter having pursued deer across the country with both bow and firearm. He shares his opinion about whether the peak rut is the best time to be in the deer woods, and he also gives away his favorite tactic for tagging bucks this time of year. The hosts and our guest also share their favorite rut stories. Spoiler alert! None of the stories end with a punched tag. Running a state wildlife agency has to rank up there as one of the most difficult jobs in the country given how passionate sportsmen are about hunting. Deer in particular drive much of that passion, especially in states with hundreds of thousands of hunters who all have their own idea of how to manage deer. Maybe that’s why Bryan Burhans, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Game Commission and NDA board member boldly proclaims that turkeys are better than deer! He joins Nick and “The Doctor” on this episode to humorously explain his reasoning and to talk about his passion for his job despite the challenges it sometimes brings. Also in this episode, the guys answer “ask NDA anything” questions from our listeners and discuss how their early season archery hunting is going.

Communicating to the masses the positive impact of deer and hunting on conservation has become increasingly important. As hunters and wildlife face new challenges at the policy level, the need for more people to participate in those issues by contacting elected officials and decision makers is critical. Who better to give a history lesson on the progression of archery hunting than the man with more than 50 years of experience behind a bow and who was the leader of the Archery Trade Association for 17 years? Jay McAninch, now retired and emeritus member of the National Deer Association Board of Directors joins Nick and “The Doctor” to talk about his early years as an archery hunter in the mid 60’s and how what he carries to the woods now barely resembles what he was using when he arrowed his first deer at age 16. You won’t want to miss his answer to the question, “What about archery hunting has never changed even though so much has changed over the last 50 years?” Despite being retired, Jay remains active in the outdoors industry and is often called upon by conservation organizations for his expertise in non-profit organization management and conservation policy.

Who doesn’t like a big buck story, especially when it comes from a state not known for high-scoring deer?
