A brand new podcast by Mercy Ships where we’ll take you behind the scenes and onboard our incredible hospital ships that are changing lives all over the world.
Emmanuel thought he was just experiencing a toothache. But that pain gave way to a bump that grew to the size of his fist. Having heard about a ship that might be able to help him, Emmanuel prayed for the ship to come. His prayers were answered as the Global Mercy docked in Freetown, Sierra Leone — Emmanuel’s home country.
Emmanuel was the first patient in Sierra Leone to receive free surgery on board the Global Mercy. This surgery put to rest his fears and worry over his health.
In this episode, you will hear Emmanuel’s story of hope and healing. You will also hear about the special man who helped him through his recovery and why that was so meaningful.
Emmanuel means God with us. Today we celebrate the day God came to be with us as a baby, Jesus. We are grateful that our God knows our burdens and fears. He knows our worries and concerns. In the midst of those, He has come to be with us. We are not alone. Merry Christmas.

This week we focus on Diarra’s story that brought JOY. Diarra was a young teenager when she experienced a toothache. Then a small bump formed in her mouth and soon that bump became a growing tumor. For many years she searched for help until she heard about Mercy Ships on the radio.
Joy came when Diarra received free surgery that removed her tumor and opened the doors to live out her dreams. In this episode you’ll hear Diarra’s story of searching for help, her supportive family, and the gift of joy that came not only to her, but to her husband and daughter as well.

This week we get to hear Umu’s story that brought PEACE. Umu was born with a large tumor on the side of her face and neck that only grew bigger as she did. Her mother’s worry grew as well, fearing that the tumor would one day cut off Umu’s airway.
Umu’s family searched for help, but there was not even one maxillofacial surgeon in Sierra Leone who could help her. The stress and fear increased daily, until the Global Mercy arrived with skilled surgeons on board who could offer Umu a free surgery. Peace came to Umu’s family as her tumor was removed, as well as the burden of worry and fear they all carried.
In this episode, you will hear about Umu’s brilliant personality, the hopelessness of her situation without access to surgical care, and the gift of Mercy Ships.

Holiday Stories of Hope and Healing
This is the month of Advent when we reflect on Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. We will be sharing stories of God’s miracles that have changed the lives of four very special people. In December you will get to hear about the lives that have been transformed by the love of Jesus, shown through Mercy Ships volunteers.
This week we get to hear Samba’s story of HOPE. Samba was born with a cleft lip — a condition that occurs 1 in 700 births worldwide. Usually, babies are operated on within a year to correct this. But in developing nations like Senegal in West Africa, the lack of resources means that someone like Samba will spend their whole life marked different from others.
Samba did live with his cleft lip for 56 years until the Global Mercy arrived in his home country.
In this episode, we hear about the painful reality our patients face because of their conditions like a cleft lip. We get to hear from the surgeon who operated on Samba and the transformation that took place in one man’s life because Mercy Ships brought hope and healing.

Ria Bos grew up in the Netherlands and always had a heart for missions. After becoming an ICU nurse, Ria sought opportunities to use her skills to help those in need — that’s when Mercy Ships came into her story. Now, 10 years later, Ria is still volunteering, currently serving as our Director of Patient Selection.
In this role, Ria considers herself a bridge with one foot on the ship, working with our doctors and nurses, and the other on land, partnering with the ministry of health and local healthcare professionals. Ria loves learning from all the people she interacts with.
In this episode, Ria shares the streamlined way Mercy Ships approves patients for surgery, the hope that is offered each person, and the night she’ll never forget in Madagascar. She also highlights the lasting impact Mercy Ships leaves in our host nations not only through surgery, but through education and training of local healthcare professionals.

Whitney Grant: Senior Director, HR Operational Effectiveness
One little Facebook video was all it took to start Whitney Grant on a journey that she never would have expected! Happily working in her corporate HR job in the United States, Whitney was involved in her church and had a great community of friends — she was not looking for a major life change. But watching a Mercy Ships video that her friend posted on social media opened Whitney’s heart to something unexpected.
Whitney came to Mercy Ships with 10 years of HR experience, and she was surprised when her new job on board brought challenges that she never faced in corporate America. Whitney recalled, “I had become comfortable and on cruise control. But on the ship, I was challenged immediately.”
In this episode, Whitney not only shares about her personal time on board, but she also shares how you can have your own life changing experience with Mercy Ships! Caroline Mallory: Volunteer Nurse
Caroline Mallory first heard about Mercy Ships in a book she was given when she was a teenager. Later, when she was about to graduate from college, a guest speaker from Mercy Ships came to her university and a new dream was born. Caroline knew she wanted to become a nurse and go serve on board. Seven years later that dream came true when she boarded the Africa Mercy in Senegal.
Now on board the Global Mercy, Caroline volunteers as a ward nurse and has committed to serve for two years.
In this episode, Caroline shares about the moment she got on board the Africa Mercy, a special patient that was on board for 86 days, and the gift of hope she has received through her time serving.

Paula Pheasant - Volunteer Nurse
Paula grew up shying away from the spotlight, with little desire to venture too far from home. But a radio ad she heard on the way to school one day gave her a one-minute
look into Mercy Ships and opened her mind to adventures that she never dreamed of.
Paula Pheasant volunteers as the PACU (post anesthesia care unit) team lead on board the Global Mercy. Caring for patients as they come out of their surgery, Paula is able to witness their first reactions as they wake up to a new life. After serving for almost 10 years, Paula shares, “I can’t imagine my life without having been here.”
In this episode, Paula shares about the important work she does on board caring for patients post anesthesia, the joy one patient gave her during a time of personal loss, and how God has taken her from the background into a position of leadership.

Rachel Greenland - Volunteer Nurse
An ad in a magazine led to a tour aboard the Anastasis, which led to volunteering with Mercy Ships for 20 years! Nurse Rachel Greenland was made for this kind of work — where she gets to combine her faith and her professional skills to leave a lasting impact on those in need. Rachel is now on board the Global Mercy, volunteering as the ICU Coordinator and nurse in the maxillofacial ward.
In this episode, Rachel shares what keeps her coming back year after year to volunteer. She also talks about her first impressions, the hard days, and the great rewards that have left her life forever changed. Through stories about special patients and her own self-discoveries on board, Rachel is sure to encourage and inspire you.

Lily Boeckel was given the book Ships of Mercy by Don Stephens, by her grandmother. It was a discouraging season for Lily in nursing school and she was thinking about quitting. This book opened her eyes to new possibilities that she had never known about and breathed new life into her education. Determined to one day walk up the
gangway, Lily worked to gain a degree and experience to make that dream come true.
Volunteering on board as the nurse educator, Lily has the opportunity to meet every new nurse that comes on board and help them transition. She also gets to use her experience as a pediatric nurse and help in the wards with the children that receive surgery. When asked why she has returned for a third field service, Lily said, “I’m not done yet with experiencing the goodness of God and seeing his miracles happening on board this vessel.”
In this episode, Lily shares about preparing new nurses to serve on board, her joy in playing hide and seek with the littlest patients, and the opportunity she had to showcase one patient’s talents.

Larry Mast is truly considered a hero of the faith, serving on the mission flied for over 59 years, 39 of which have been with Mercy Ships! As a young man, Larry dreamed of a life of outdoor adventure and followed that dream all over the world, sharing the hope of Jesus. Larry is one of the few people to have served on every Mercy Ships vessel and tells us which is his favorite in this episode.

Estevam Silva spent seven years growing up on the Africa Mercy, thousands of miles away from his home country of Brazil. His father is a mariner and whereas most jobs at
sea mean leaving your family behind for several months, with Mercy Ships, your family comes with you! As Chief Officer, Estevam’s father brought his family to serve with him and afforded his children an opportunity to meet people from all over the world and be agents of hope and healing.
In this episode, Estevam shares some highlight moments of growing up on board — getting to experience some “typical teenager” things while being in a most non-typical environment! He tells about growing in his faith, gaining wisdom through relationships with the adults on board and learning about different cultures.

Remy was a teacher in her home country, The Netherlands, for 8 years when she began to feel that change was coming. Knowing about Mercy Ships, Remy didn’t realize
there were volunteer teachers on board! She eagerly applied for a 2 year
commitment and 11 years later, she’s still caring for children and families on board our
ships.
With a passion for children’s development, not only academically, but socially and emotionally, Remy began to equip children for the transition to ship life and help families navigate this big life change when coming aboard.

Trina Laidlaw studied to be a dietician, hoping to land a big job in a fancy hospital, but God had other plans. Working in a rural clinic for almost 10 years meant she learned many skills through seeing a wide range of patients in all stages of life that she would
not have in a city hospital. However, Trina worried her rural experience was not enough to volunteer with Mercy Ships — she couldn’t have been more wrong!
Now in Sierra Leone for her third field service, Trina is excited to help undernourished
patients reach their goal weight for a safe surgery. She knows the need is great but is confident in what God will do.

Sandra Lako was born in The Netherlands but grew up on board the Anastasis where she spent much time playing with patients in the hospital. What might be uncomfortable for some was normal for Sandra and she was not bothered by the sights and sounds of a hospital.
Sandra later became Dr. Sandra Lako and has been practicing medicine now for over 17 years in Sierra Leone. In this beautiful country, she’s seen the need for safe surgery and medical care. But, she has also seen the resilience and determination of the people she works alongside. Dr. Sandra is excited to have the Global Mercy in Sierra Leone as she works with Mercy Ships to bring hope and healing to the Sierra Leoneans.

Season 4, Episode 3
It was a family day trip to tour the Caribbean Mercy off the coast of North Carolina that changed Shawn Thompson’s life. On that tour, his parents felt called to leave North Carolina and serve with Mercy Ships. Shawn was only 2 years old when his family moved to Nicaragua to begin their Mercy Ships adventure.
After seven years in Central America, Shawn’s family moved to Texas to continue working with Mercy Ships at the headquarters. Having grown up around the organization, Shawn would grab part time jobs at Mercy Ships during the summer. But once his schooling was complete, he had to decide if Mercy Ships was his family’s calling or his own.

In 2005, Nikki Aldum toured the Anastasis in her home country of South Africa. She had been teaching for several years and was happy in the classroom but walking up that gangway changed everything.
Soon Nikki came aboard to teach in the Mercy Ships academy and 17 years later, she’s still playing a vital role in ensuring the children on board our ships receive an excellent education. Patrik Bergström has served with Mercy Ships since 1994, both on
vessels and at the International Support Center. His time in both places has
provided him with the compassion and understanding to bridge the gap between
East Texas and West Africa.
Volunteering as Senior Chaplain on board the Anastasis, Patrik found immense joy worshipping in such a culturally diverse community. Five years on board equipped him to later serve as the International Chaplain. That job in turn prepared him for his current role with Mercy Ships — Donor and Volunteer Service Manager.

Martha Ashu grew up in Cameroon, one of seven children. Upon finishing her university degree, political unrest broke out in her country, forcing her to go live with her sister who owned and operated a restaurant. During that time, Martha helped her sister in the restaurant and this season laid the groundwork for the culinary journey Martha would embark upon.
When she heard of a ship coming to Cameroon, Martha decided to apply to work on board in the galley and some might say, “the rest is history.” Martha has now been on board for over five years and has grown in more ways that she could have ever asked or imagined. With all of her experience and training, Martha is now seeking to go to culinary school to make her passion her profession.
Through a beautiful story of trusting God, taking risks, and relying on the kindness of others, Martha will inspire you through her Mercy Ships journey.

Michelle Wallace spent five years equipping crew to come on board with Mercy Ships. Mercy Ships has a unique model in that our volunteers pay to come serve! To cover room and board, each volunteer pays crew fees and this usually requires fundraising. As part of the FinACE team, Michelle helped to coach and encourage crew as they financially prepared to volunteer on board.
In this episode, Michelle explains the process of fundraising and why it is so valuable — not only to the person going to serve, but also for the person giving. Michelle shares her joy in using her gifts of encouragement and helping as she walked volunteers through their financial budgeting and fundraising.
In an area that can feel overwhelming for some, Michelle’s kindness and gentleness brought peace and reassurance to new crew as they raised funds to come on board.

Abdul Cole grew up in Sierra Leone as one of seven children. When the Africa Mercy arrived in his home country, Abdul had no idea that his life was about to be impacted. While waiting in line for two days, holding a place for his cousin to be seen by the Mercy Ships screening nurses, the trajectory of Abdul’s life was forever changed. At 14 years old, he decided he wanted to become a sailor.

Debbie Nutsugah came to volunteer on board the Africa Mercy for 6 months as a biomedical technician. But before her 6 months were complete, she already decided to extend her service and called her twin sister, Dorcas, to come join her. Dorcas was excited to come aboard and volunteer in the human resources department with patient services. Originally from Ghana, both sisters are now volunteering on board the Global Mercy and plan to stay for a few years.

Morgan Georgioff is a professional chef in Oregon and desired to use her culinary talents as a ministry. She googled “cooking for Jesus internationally,” and was surprised to find Mercy Ships! After applying, Morgan was thrilled to join the crew on board the Global Mercy, volunteering as the galley team lead.
Now Morgan is growing as a chef and expanding her pallet as she learns about African cuisine as well as dishes from other parts of the world that the crew represent.
In this episode Morgan shares her joy as she makes the crew feel at home by cooking international comfort foods. She tells about the importance of healthful nutrition, the power of a good meal, and how she is training up the next generation of chefs by teaching cooking classes to the students on board.

Ann Heinrich: Volunteer Counselor
Ann Heinrich didn’t have an adventurous spirit, no desire to travel to Africa and didn’t really have missions on her mind — but God had other plans! To an unexpected invitation, Ann immediately said yes to volunteer as the licensed counselor aboard the Africa Mercy for two years. Her husband however, took a bit more convincing! But once on board, it was obvious that God had a wonderful gift in store for Ann and her husband, one that they would never have dreamed of.

After spending his teenage years in Zimbabwe, Joff Williams discovered what it looks like to put your faith in action. This realization formed his adult years and caused he and his wife to seriously ask what they wanted to do with their lives to live out their faith. A chance meeting with Mercy Ships volunteer surgeon, Dr. Gary Parker at a wedding reception led Joff and his wife to apply as volunteers with Mercy Ships as a family.
After serving for over 5 years at the International Support Center in Texas, Joff and his family are now aboard the Global Mercy, serving as the Managing Director of the vessel.

Ja Roache: Volunteer Engineering Administrator
Ja Roache had retired and relocated to Hawaii to be alone, but God had other plans for her! Through a strange ailment, Jas was led to volunteer with Mercy Ships. She thought she had retreated to an island to isolate, but God brought her on board to a community where she is rarely alone. Going on three years of service, Ja can’t imagine her life any other way.
In this episode, Ja shares about the miraculous way God brought her to Mercy Ships. Roger Newquist: Volunteer Chaplain
Roger Newquist was nearing retirement from his law enforcement career when he
began to dream about what was next. He first heard of Mercy Ships through supporting a friend as she went to teach on board. Desiring to go back into ministry, Roger explored Mercy Ships and found a perfect opportunity for him and his family. Upon retiring, Roger boarded the Africa Mercy to volunteer as a chaplain.
In this episode, Roger shares about the thrill of living in a multi-cultural environment while getting to use his gifts to help others, and the heartbreak of leaving that community due to COVID. He tells of his experience with the screening team and the impact the nurses made on him. Stefan Schmid grew up in Germany with missional minded parents who planted churches. His theological teaching came at the dinner table where his father would nightly share scripture with the family and pray. Stefan had a heart after God and a desire to make an impact in His kingdom. Through various ministry opportunities, Stefan and his family eventually moved to East Texas to serve with Mercy Ships at the International Support Center. Stefan serves as the Field Service Coordinator where he gets to train and equip new crew before they go on board our ships.

Debra Mae Goehringer: Volunteer Dental Hygienist
Debra Mae Goehringer jumped into the dental field right after college and worked six days a week as a dental hygienist. She quickly found herself questioning her decision to be a dental hygienist. But a trip to Tanzania and the words of her father as she was growing up, “if you are going to travel, take a skill with you,” started to ignite dreams for something outside of the American dental office.
Debra Mae decided to volunteer for three weeks with Mercy Ships. Inspired by the need she saw while volunteering and the work being done, that short time quickly grew. Now, seven years later, she continues to volunteer and has wonderful insight to share.

Josh Remer: Volunteer Food Service
Josh Remer had been a supporter of Mercy Ships for some time but never thought he would be able to serve on board. Then, one day he and his wife felt that their current jobs were coming to an end as God was doing something new within them. Leaving behind their jobs, Josh and his wife jumped at the opportunity to take this new freedom and volunteer with Mercy Ships. When filling out the application, Josh willingly checked the box marked “I just want to serve” — meaning he could be placed anywhere on the vessel — and his courage didn’t disappoint.

Grace Flint: Volunteer Teacher
While growing up, Grace Flint had heard about Mercy Ships from her father who was in the Navy. But it wasn’t until she had graduated from college that Mercy Ships came up once again. Grace was a teacher in Indiana and desired to teach overseas, specifically in Africa, and that’s when she applied to volunteer with Mercy Ships. On this adventure, Grace didn’t go alone — she invited her friend Kayla to join her as a teacher in the Academy.

Eric Baliantz: Volunteer Mariner

Erin Muyres — Volunteer Medical Capacity Building Projects Director
Erin Muyres was in nursing school in Canada when she began to question her decision to become a nurse. During the late hours in the library one night, Erin started to research what she might be able to do with her nursing degree when she finished school, and that was when she discovered Mercy Ships. She spent the next weeks watching every Mercy Ships video she could find, crying through them, and dreaming of a new vision for her life. She was determined to volunteer with Mercy Ships as soon as she was eligible, and that’s just what she did.

Dr. Gary Brandenburg serves as the International Spiritual Development Officer for Mercy Ships. In this role, Gary is the pastor that oversees all the chaplains both on and off our ships.
He worked in pastoral ministry for over 40 years and throughout his church ministry, he became acquainted with Mercy Ships. Through the years, he has taken on various volunteer roles from board member to training local pastors in the countries where Mercy Ships was serving. Marty Schwebel was ministering as a pastor in California when he and his wife decided it was time to take their three sons and extend their ministry overseas. Volunteer Accountant
When Mercy Ships was serving in his home country of Cameroon, Moise jumped at the opportunity to master his English while working with Christians on board the Africa Mercy. Leaving behind a job as an accountant, he became a translator to help during the field service. Moise enjoyed his time on board so much that when the ship left Cameroon, he joined as fulltime crew, this time working in the finance department.

Thomas Dubourcq first encountered Mercy Ships in 1991 when he was 17 years old and boarded the Anastasis to perform with his drama group. Little did he know this experience on board would not be his last. DK grew up in Kazakhstan, helping on the farm and learning electrical work from his father. With a passion for technology, DK later got his degree in informatics and then received a scholarship to study English in the United States. Volunteer Teacher
Susan Waldron entered college with the aspiration of becoming a doctor. But as her university studies were coming to a close, her path changed direction. Susan decided to use her science degree to become a high school teacher. A few years later, Mercy Ships entered the picture and Susan was able to combine her passions for teaching, science, and medicine on board a hospital ship in Africa.
Susan answered “yes” to God’s question, “Are you willing to sacrifice everything to follow me?” and volunteered on board the Africa Mercy as a teacher for 3 years. Volunteer Teacher
When most of his colleagues were looking at retirement, Mike Kirchner and his wife felt that they still had a lot of miles left. Rather than retire, they decided to continue their career in the unique environment of a hospital ship. Mike was a high school biology teacher for 21 years in the United States and is now thrilled to be teaching Mercy Ships students who range from grades 6-12.

Volunteer Medical Supply Assistant
As a civil engineer in Montana, Ben Stewart was enjoying his career. But, with many friends moving away or changing careers, Ben was motivated to make a change himself. Seeking to take a sabbatical, Ben recalled the advice of his aunt and uncle to go volunteer with Mercy Ships. Ben wasn’t how a civil engineer could contribute to needs of a hospital ship, but was surprised to find his skills matched a need on the Africa Mercy.
In this episode Ben tells us how he used his problem-solving degree, why he’s convinced he had the “best job” on the ship, and how he learned a valuable life lesson while volunteering on board. Ben’s joy is infectious and the enthusiasm in his voice will put a smile on your face!

Volunteer Translator
Aby Diouf had completed her degree in English and was working on a Masters in translation when she heard that the Africa Mercy was coming to her home country of Senegal and would be hiring local translators. Aby quickly applied and was thrilled to be accepted to work on board, serving to bridge the language gap between patients and nurses and doctors.
In this episode, Aby reveals how working on the ship taught her things about her home that she knew nothing about. She shares how seeing the need of her own country inspired her to help and motivate the patients she cared for. Through her stories of helping a scared patient, to her newfound love for children and teaching them — Aby will touch your heart with her passion and commitment to helping her own people.

Justin Brunenkant was an electrician, but always had a pastor’s heart to care for others. After being a traveling nurse for many years, Cara Stafford had a lingering feeling that God wanted her to use her nursing skills beyond the hospitals in the United States. Having heard of Mercy Ships, she applied and was accepted to come volunteer. The ship proved to be the perfect place to use all the skills she had acquired during her nursing career — from quickly making new friends to caring for pediatric patients with various conditions — Cara thrived in the wards and enjoyed being a charge nurse.

Ellee Rollins is a nurse who was raised overseas with her missionary parents and three siblings. It was part of her upbringing to care for others in need and share the love of Jesus. So, years later, when Ellee heard about Mercy Ships from a co-worker at the hospital, something just felt right about applying to go serve as a nurse on board.

Dr. Mark Shrime, a volunteer surgeon with Mercy Ships, has recently published a book entitled: Solving for Why: A Surgeon’s Journey to Discover the Transformative Power of Purpose. In this thought-provoking book, Dr. Shrime shares his own journey through the medical field and his constant struggle with the desire to quit. Happy Mothers’ Day to all moms throughout the world! Many families come on board our hospital ships, bringing moms who care for their children from infants to teenagers. In this episode of New Mercies, we get to hear from a mom who is no longer caring for young children but came to volunteer with Mercy Ships because her adult daughter invited her!
Caroline Kirchner raised her three daughters to love and serve God, even taking short term mission trips to instill in their children the value of caring for the poor. One of her adult daughters has been serving with Mercy Ships for over 5 years and invited her mom and dad to come join her. In the fall of 2021, Caroline and her husband boarded the Africa Mercy to volunteer alongside their daughter Beth. Caroline volunteers in hospitality and loves getting to know all the new crew and helping them settle into their new home when they come aboard.

Jamie Barki is a mom of three children who lives in Oklahoma. When her children were 3, 5, and 7 years old, Jamie and her husband decided to volunteer with Mercy Ships as a family.
Jamie and her family joined the crew of the Africa Mercy and stayed to serve for four years. In the beginning, Jamie went through ups and downs of helping her children transition to ship-life, but says “If transition isn’t painful, you’re not making progress.” They all made a lot of progress and have treasured memories of their time on board.

Josh Salmon is currently a college student in Idaho pursuing a medical career, but in high school he had a strong desire to help people in need. So, on his 18th birthday, Josh boarded a plane for Senegal to join the reception team on board the Africa Mercy.
While on board, Josh quickly became part of the community and felt at home. He learned from the many cultures on board and gained valuable insight from observing various medical departments.

Patty Stack had been working for a company in the United States for 29 years when the pandemic hit and impacted her employment. Seeing this as an opportunity instead of devastation, Patty took courses to receive her certification as a nurse aide, something she had always wanted to do. Patty originally applied to volunteer with Mercy Ships in the hospital but learned there wasn’t a need for her skill set at the time. Despite the setback, she once again saw it as an opportunity and decided to serve wherever there was a need. Patty came on board the Africa Mercy as a volunteer in the dining room.
Now, Patty is loving her life on the ship and enjoys getting to meet every crew member on board as they come to the dining room for meals. Patty has also volunteered to be the librarian and run the boutique! She has a servant’s heart and is quick to step in wherever this is a gap to be filled.

For most people the path to study medicine would not include a trip through engineering school, but that’s exactly where Dr. Sherif Emil began his career. After growing up in a family of doctors, Sherif thought he would like to try something different and carve his own path. He completed an undergraduate engineering degree before coming to the realization that he really did want to pursue medicine.
“I like the personal aspect (of medicine), I like the interaction and I like the human aspect of it.”
That change in career path would lead him to specialize in pediatric surgical medicine in the United States and Canada and eventually would bring him to Mercy Ships. After accepting a position on the Canadian Mercy Ships Board in 2014, Dr. Sherif began preparations to visit the hospital ships as a volunteer surgeon where he was able to experience the joy of serving in the operating theatre aboard the Africa Mercy.
“I’ve operated in many places in Africa, including university hospitals and the resources there are nowhere near what this ship has to offer in terms of medical care,” he says.

Captain Josh McGrath came to volunteer with Mercy Ships in 2007 as Third Officer on the
Anastasis in Ghana and Liberia. Josh was newly graduated from the Maritime Academy in Northern California and it was the recommendation of one of his professors that led him to serve.
Returning in various roles for several field services, Josh met his wife on board and later returned with his young children as captain of the Africa Mercy. Earning the nickname “Captain Fun,” Josh not only made family life a blast on board, but he also stepped out of the bridge to teach P.E. to the academy students. In this episode Josh shares stories from his time volunteering with Mercy Ships and shares how his own life, both personal and professional, has been impacted by his time on board.

Christelle, a nurse from Cameroon, first heard about Mercy Ships when news spread of the Africa Mercy coming to her home country. She decided to volunteer as a translator in the hospital and was surprised to learn that the patients on board were not like the patients she had seen working in the local hospital. She discovered that many in her own country did not have access to affordable health care. Greatly impacted by this, Christelle decided to join the Africa Mercy crew as a screening nurse after the ship left Cameroon.
The transformation Christelle saw on board was not only in the lives of the patients, but in her own life as well. Now furthering her nursing education in the United States with the dream of going into anesthesia, Christelle shares with us about her Mercy Ships experience and how it influenced her decision to go back to school.

At 17 years old, Amy Jones had an experience on a mission trip that sparked a desire to go into nursing and help people who don’t have easy access to medical care. This was just the beginning of the road that led her to Mercy Ships.

Andrea Scace is a Nurse Practitioner who first volunteered with Mercy Ships 18 years ago. She has recently returned with her husband and three children, this time in a whole new role. Now onboard the Africa Mercy, Andrea is serving as the primary caregiver (PCG) of her children as her family has committed to two years of service.

Nick & Irene met for the first time as they boarded the Africa Mercy in Dakar, Senegal. Nick from the UK and Irene from Canada, had each signed on to volunteer for 2 months, Nick as an electrical technician and Irene serving in the dining room. But the pandemic lock down in 2020 extended their time onboard allowing time for a budding relationship to blossom.

Amber Greenhow Dissake is a nurse from the United Stated who first volunteered with Mercy Ships in 2017. Her first commitment was just for a few months, but before those months were over, she had already signed up to return! Shortly after, she made a long-term commitment to serve with Mercy Ships, but that was not the only long-term commitment she’d make while in Africa.

Warrie Blackburn first stepped onto the Anastasis when she graduated from college and went to visit some friends on board. Inspired by what she saw, she decided to volunteer for a year. Now, with almost 24 years of service, she continues to use her gifts and talents to further the work of Mercy Ships. From receptionist to managing director, Warrie has served in many roles and currently volunteers in the chaplaincy department in Texas.

Captain Djurre Jan Schutte was destined for a life on the water as he was born on a vessel and spent the first six years of his life sailing with his parents. But it was a sign on the side of the road, an invitation to tour a ship, that changed the course of Captain Djurre Jan’s life forever.

Kathryn Dungworth is a teacher from the UK who has been teaching onboard the Africa Mercy since 2019 and worked to set up the brand-new Academy onboard the Global Mercy. Having 2 Academies in operation will be a first for Mercy Ships.
