We have been journeying through the book of Ecclesiastes for the past few episodes, and today we will be finishing by giving an overview of the remaining chapters, as well as reflecting on what it all means...both Ecclesiastes and life!
We will see that the preacher continues to wrestle and struggle through the frustrating and confusing aspects of life, but we get a deeper understanding of what he wants us to take from his message. The preacher continues to have an echo of sadness over the reality of all of life leading to death, and yet, the preacher knows there is eternal life and the only solution to this problem of death is turning to God before it’s too late. And turning to God doesn’t just make eternal life meaningful, it makes the here and the now meaningful through an eternal lens. From the life-changing decision to the mundane, all things are being made beautiful in its time, and all things are meaningful through God.
And Jesus’ death captures this tension that the preacher conveys, the horrible reality of death against the beautiful reality of eternal life. And the way to fulfill this desire for eternity that we all long for is in Jesus. He is our answer. And as the preacher pleads with those he preaches to, don’t delay. Don’t avoid the topic and reality of death, the frustrations of life. They point to our need for God and a Savior to rescue us from a meaningless life. Even those of us who have a relationship with God, the reality of how short life is should beckon us to ask ourselves, What am I truly living for? We don’t want to get to the end of our life and have an echo of regret and sadness like the preacher. Life is more meaningful and joyful through doing things that matter for eternity. Now is the time.
“Only one life, twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.”- C.T. Studd

This week we will spend our time on chapter 3 of Ecclesiastes, which has been called the thesis of the book. The preacher in Ecclesiastes shifts the reader from cynicism to hope as he continues to reflect on life, this time showing us that there is a season for everything and in these seasons, God is making "all things beautiful in its time."
Though life is confusing, hard, and often seems backward, the preacher will show us that God is working all things together and there is purpose in all of life.

Last week we were introduced to some of the themes and overview of Ecclesiastes before diving in specifically to the book in this episode through chapters 1 and 2. We will be introduced to the preacher- the main voice in the book- who seems to be quite cynical about life and finds it extremely frustrating, difficult to understand, and can feel meaningless.
On today's episode we will walk with the preacher as he dives into 5 aspects of life, the history of mankind, the world and nature, wisdom, self-indulgence, and toil-our work. We will see that the preacher was a man who tasted the best that life in and of itself has to offer, but found the endless pursuit (and gain) of these things to be frustrating and even somewhat depressing.
So what is the point of the preacher's words, and life in general?
Join us as we dive into the first two chapters of this somewhat mysterious but incredible book. Though he appears cynical, the preacher was willing to ask some hard questions about life. Questions that maybe some of us should be willing to ask, because they can eventually point us to God Himself.

Have you ever gotten exactly what you wanted, it hasn't satisfied you the way you thought, and you've wondered, Is This It?For 4 weeks we will be journeying through the book of Ecclesiastes, and we would love for you to join us! This is a book about a wise preacher who was given so much in life- wisdom, pleasures, experiences, so much more-and found that these things in and of themselves, were empty. Through a human lens, the preacher shows us that life is like a vapor or breath; we are shown that life is fleeting, hard to understand, and cannot be controlled!
But, because of God, we can find meaning and thankfulness for all things in life through a God-perspective.
The preacher in Ecclesiastes was willing to ask the hard questions. Questions that many of us might be afraid to ask but have wondered deep in our heart. But these questions can lead us to meaning, deep and eternal meaning that is found only in Jesus.

AUTHHave you ever doubted the reliability of the bible?
Our guest today, Mary Jo Sharp was raised in Portland, Oregon. Where she grew up, there wasn’t much talk about God or the bible. The only Christianity she really saw on display was what was shown in the movies.
As she grew older, she started having questions about the meaning of life and began investigating for answers. Around this same time, her high school band director gave her a bible. She was about to graduate, and he knew that she would have questions. He told her to turn to the bible for answers.
In college, Mary Jo started going to church. She was searching for answers and community, but not all of the experiences she had were good. Through her spiritual journey, she encountered apologetics. In her wrestling with her faith, apologetics provided some of the answers she was desperately searching for.
Mary Jo is now an assistant professor of apologetics at Houston Baptist University and the founder and director of Confident Christianity Apologetics Ministry. She has been featured in Christianity Today’s cover story “The Unexpected Defenders” and is an international speaker on apologetics, focusing on love and logic to uncover truth. She lives with her husband and family in Portland, Oregon.

What are your thoughts about self love?
We live in a culture that is centered around self love. Everywhere we turn, we see a t-shirt that says ‘I am enough’, or an advertisement that boasts ‘I am worthy”. The media is constantly promoting acceptance & praise for everyone, but at what cost?
Take a minute to ask yourself ‘Where does my worth come from?’. If the answer is anything but ‘God’, then we have a self love problem that needs to be addressed. We must humble ourselves before God and acknowledge that apart from Him, we are nothing.
Anything that is taken to an extreme level can become a slippery slope.. But what does the Bible say about self love? Is there a biblically acceptable version of this widely popular term?
Tune in today and listen as we dive deeper into this topic and explore what the Bible has to say about self love.

Have you ever felt alone in your grief?
Grief can be isolating. In times of grief, people turn to many different things in an attempt to numb the pain, but true hope is found in Jesus.
In today’s episode, Kristin speaks with Amber Smith about how tragedy struck her family and how they’ve moved forward and are healing little by little by God’s grace.
Amber Smith is a Christ follower, wife, mother, and philanthropist. She lives on a farm in central Texas with her husband Granger and their three children. In 2019, the family suffered a terrible tragedy when their youngest son River drowned.

For the last three years, Amber has shared her testimony and the hope we have in Jesus. She started the River Kelly Fund and has since donated over $400,000 to nonprofits to keep his legacy alive. She also Coauthored a book called Where the Dinosaurs Roar.

Are you living out God’s will in your life?
Sometimes people view God’s will as something that will come in the future… but the truth is, He wants to use you right where you are now. He has you where He wants you and He wants to use every situation in your life to shed light on His goodness and give Him glory.
Today on the podcast, Kristin takes a deeper look into God’s will and how He leverages our weakness for good with Author Michelle Myers. Michelle is the Cofounder of She Works His Way, a nonprofit gospel centered community that resources, equips, and encourages women to do their God given work for His glory and the benefit of His church. She has also written several books, including Conversational Commentary on Ecclesiastes: Wisdom to Live for Heaven While on Earth, Conversational Commentary on Acts: Gospel Mission Then and Now, Famous in Heaven and At Home, and co written She Works His Way: A Practical Guide for Doing What Matters Most in a Get-Things-Done World.
Michelle and her husband James live with their three children in Asheville, North Carolina where James is the Central Discipleship Pastor at Biltmore Church. Blessed to grow up in a Christian home with a Worship Pastor for a father, Michelle went on to earn her MA in Christian Education with an emphasis on Women’s Ministry from Southwestern Seminary. You can listen to her weekly on the She Works His Way podcast.

Did you know that Satan has a counterfeit for everything good and holy that is of God? He disguises himself as love and light to deceive anyone who will fall into his grasp.
Today on the show, we are joined by guest Mia Michele. Mia was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness, but at the age of 12, she closed the door on God and spent her teen years partying. Eventually, she got into drugs and fell into the deception of the New Age belief system.
In the New Age belief system, everyone has their own ‘truth’, everyone is made up of energy, everything is ‘one’, and everything is ‘God’. They hold the belief that there is no ‘right and wrong’, no sin, and everything is based on connection to the supernatural and ‘oneness’.
Mia wanted to help people, and the New Age teachings offered her a way to connect with ‘spirit guides’ and be given the ability to heal people supernaturally. She decided to retire from her career in nails to start her own business and practice as a psychic and healer. In the spring of 2022, she went to a business conference and that is where everything changed.
Tune in to this episode to hear Mia’s incredible testimony of how God opened her eyes and delivered her from the deceit of this seemingly love and light filled world. She is now devoted to helping save others from the New Age, helping them in their transition, spiritual warfare, and helping develop Bible study life.

Are Jesus’ words more important than Paul’s?
A relatively large group of believers today hold the belief that Jesus’ words are more important than Paul’s or the rest of scripture. Here at Abiding Free, we believe that the entirety of scripture holds equal value and authority. If we’re saying that Paul’s words are not as significant as Jesus’ words, then we diminish the authority of the rest of scripture.
Jesus commands us to believe and obey the entirety of scripture. He does not instruct us to pick and choose what we are willing to believe from the Word and what we aren’t.
Friends, we hope you will approach this episode with prayerful consideration and allow the Holy Spirit to speak His truth to you through this conversation.

What do you talk about a lot?
It’s reasonable to come to the conclusion that the thing you talk about the most is also most important to you. So, what did Jesus talk about more than anything? If we want to know the heart of Jesus more, we should also be studying His words.
In today’s episode, Kristin chats with Pastor, Professor, and Author Jeremy Treat to get to the heart of what Jesus talked about more than anything else, the Kingdom of God.
So what is the Kingdom of God? How do we seek first the Kingdom of God? Where do we find our identity? Tune in as we gather a better understanding of the Kingdom of God and the heart of the Father for the Kingdom.

Is doubt among people growing? Or has it always been there and it’s just not really talked about? What does Jesus think of our doubts?
There is sometimes shame associated with doubting our faith, but Romans 8:1 tells us there is no condemnation for those in Christ. Conviction is good, it is God’s way of steering us back when we veer off track, but shame and condemnation do not come from the Lord.
Acknowledging our weakness allows Jesus to do mighty work within us. 2 Corinthians 12:9 reminds us that His strength is made perfect in our weakness.
Dear friends, we hope this episode encourages you to give yourself grace and show yourself the compassion that Jesus freely gives us.

Were the parables actual stories? Or were they just examples?
Friends, sometimes parables can leave us confused, but there is much to be learned from them. These stories use everyday life situations to teach valuable lessons. The confusing aspect of the parables acts as a way to keep them on your mind. They are designed to get us thinking, and the more we think about them, the more revelation can come from them.
In today’s conversation with Dr. Peter Gurry, Director of the Text & Canon Institute, we dive deeper into the parables, what they mean, and who they are speaking to. We learned so much from this conversation, and we believe you will as well!

How do we know the gospels are reliable?
We’re so excited to have Jon Noyes back on the podcast today! Jon shares his incredible testimony of how he journeyed from being an atheist who enjoyed challenging Christian’s beliefs to becoming a Christian Apologist. Throughout his testimony, it is easy to see how God orchestrated situations and brought people into his life that helped cultivate the faith that he has today.
We are here on this earth by divine appointment and each conversation we have is an opportunity to point people to Jesus. We hope this conversation will spark a desire in your heart to learn more about the textual reliability of the gospels so that you can stand firm and have confidence when questioned about your faith.

Are you allowing God to interrupt you?
Every day, God uses mundane, seemingly insignificant moments to minister to people. These moments can happen in a taxi ride, on an airplane, or even at your mailbox. Some of Jesus’ greatest opportunities in His ministry were interruptions in His day.. But He welcomed them with open arms when even some of His disciples tried to push them aside.
Our hope in sharing this episode with you today is that it will stir up adventure and passion and that you would be open handed to God using you in very mighty ways! Ministry doesn’t only happen from a pulpit, God is ready to use you in everyday moments if you are willing to listen and be obedient.

We tend to think of jealousy as a momentary feeling, but the Bible says in Exodus that God’s name is Jealous. He does not fluctuate. God’s jealousy is not the same as human envy in which we covet what someone else has. He longs for you to worship Him and delight in His presence.
He delights in you and He wants to give you the desires of your heart. He wants to give you Himself. The God of the universe wants YOU and He is jealous for you.

Have you ever felt the cultural pressure to ‘Do it all’?
It’s probably safe to say we all could answer ‘yes’ to that question. We live in a fast paced world that tells us our worth is measured in the things we do, the places we go, and the people we associate with.
In today’s episode, Kristin sits down with Kristin Schmucker, Founder & CEO of The Daily Grace Co. and Cultivate What Matters to discuss cultural pressure, the anxiety it creates and the peace that can be found in the Word of God. Kristin founded The Daily Grace Co. in 2014 after the tragic loss of her daughter. During that time of grief, she turned to the Word for her strength. After a discussion with her husband, she decided to sell some of her Bible Studies on Etsy to honor their daughter. On the first day, she sold hundreds of copies. Since then, the company has grown from packaging orders on the kitchen table to now having a team of 70 men & women and shipping about 1,000,000 Bible studies a year.

What does biblical womanhood truly look like?
The world says there is not an answer to this, but God's word says otherwise. And the reality is if you’ve ever walked through your day feeling that it was nearly impossible to meet all of the demands your role as a woman has required of you, you’re not alone.
As women in today’s culture, we are busier than ever. We are required to take care of our families, coordinate schedules, and work, among many other things.
But what does God say about what womanhood is? Is the hustle and bustle really what pleases God?
Today, we are diving into a well-known passage that is also often misunderstood: Proverbs 31. Many women hear the reference to that passage and either feel intimidated or that they could never meet the criteria. If you have ever felt that way, this episode is for you.
Join us as we take a fresh look into Proverbs 31 and dive into the truths that can encourage us.
Being a woman is a great responsibility, and a privilege that we should not take for granted. When we can understand what God intends for biblical womanhood, we will be one step closer to abiding in true freedom.

How do you know when someone is ready for baptism?
In today’s episode, Kristin and Shannon dive into this much debated topic. There are so many strong opinions in the body of Christ as to whether children should be baptized, and at what age they are ready to make that decision.
The calling on parents to share the truth of the gospel to our children should not be taken lightly. It is our responsibility to share the truth with them and allow the Holy Spirit to help that truth sink down deep into their hearts.
The last thing that any parent wants is to discourage their child, especially when their faith is involved. In these moments of let's learn to lean into the Holy Spirit and trust His leading and His ministry in the lives of our children.

Often, some of the most impactful things we do in life will be born from the trials we go through.

When it comes to differences within the church, do you feel confident in when to stand firm and when to back down?
There’s no doubt that there has been an uprise in polarizing beliefs both culturally and within the church. At some point, each of us can probably think of a time the differing opinions have impacted one of our relationships. As culture rapidly changes, and things that use to be considered taboo and now being considered normal, it can often feel like our heads are on a swivel.
As Christians, we are commanded to love others, but we are also commanded to stand firm on what the bible says. What are we to do when these two things collide?
Today on the show Kristin and Shannon are diving into just that. Kristin and Shannon discuss a tier system that can be helpful in determining when to stand firm, why context matters, and why it’s essential to approach whatever we do in love.
The more culture changes, the grayer our world is becoming. We hope this episode brings you clarity and peace when determining where to stand firm and how to love others who are different than us.

We can spend our whole lives trying to understand the love of God and never fully grasp it in our limited minds. Paul tells us in the book of Ephesians that it is a love that "surpasses knowledge" (3:19). In this episode we will see a depiction of God's love that should take our breath away! This is a passage in Zephaniah that describes an ecstatic love and delight poured out from a perfect God onto a sinful people. God's love doesn't always make sense. The only explanation is complete and utter mercy and grace.
We are in the last episode of our Zephaniah series and if there ever was a climax to a book of the Bible, this is it! Come and join us on this epic conclusion to a book that displays God's justice and love, and ultimately, a picture of the cross.
Last week we followed the tragic scene of the continued rebellion of the people. God's kindness hadn't led them to repentance, and neither had His judgement. And yet even amid this tragedy, we saw His love; God continued to work for His people.
This week we turn a corner as we follow the journey of the prophecy through Zephaniah, and we learn that restoration is coming to a remnant of people. And that remnant of people are those that have been hidden in God, hidden in His righteousness. And today, that is the same promise for those of us in Christ. We can be hidden in Him on the coming day of judgement, but also in the everyday struggles.
Thank you for continuing on this journey through Zephaniah, come step into the beauty of restoration today!
We are continuing on in our journey of Zephaniah, and this week we will see in Chapter 3 an incredible picture of a God who longs for His people to draw near to Him.
God is not in need, He is not lonely, and WE are the ones, just like Judah, who rebel and turn away and choose to go against His ways. And yet He longs for us to draw near to Him! This is an incomprehensible kind of love! It should make us raise our hands and say, who is this incredible God?
We will also step into a deeper picture of God's judgement and learn more of the purpose of it, and in fact, we will also talk about why we should celebrate His judgement. Part of God's justice and judgement is bringing in what we can call a "holy tough love" for His people. And this week is also building up to our last two weeks of this series during which we will see one of the most beautiful pictures of God's love in the entire Bible.
Don't miss this week as we follow along and learn from this incredible book!
We pray and hope that the story of Zephaniah is captivating you, drawing you in, teaching you more about God, and also showing you how to go deeper in your walk or to reflect on your own life.
We are in week three of our 6-week Zephaniah devotional series. In weeks one and two we had to swallow the difficult news that God was bringing judgement to the nations and His people. But here in week three we learn through the book of Zephaniah that God made a promise to His people in spite of the coming day of judgement and trouble. Some would be hidden in God on that day, some would be preserved despite what was coming. But who? And how?
Tune in to find out who was hidden on the day of trouble, and also, how even today WE can also be hidden in God through whatever comes our way.
We are so glad you are joining us on this journey through the book of Zephaniah!
Last week we entered into the story of Zephaniah and learned that God was bringing judgement not just to the surrounding nations, but to God's people.
This week we turn to the introduction of the "day of the Lord" and talk about what that means as both a coming day of judgement and salvation. And God had another grievance for His people, in plain language, they wanted to fit in and clothe themselves in worldly attire and attributes rather than be set apart as God's people. They were looking more like the world than the God who choose them.
Instead, God has called His people to put on the beautiful garments of salvation and righteousness, because we are His. And wearing these garments of glory should change everything!
So come, and continue on this journey with Zephaniah.
Welcome friends, to our six-week devotional series on the book of Zephaniah! Journey with us in this book, a story of a world that looked much like our own:
Crooked political and religious leaders, nations contenting with nations, declining faith, believers looking more like the world than the God who chose them, the worship of money, and so much more...
The prophet Zephaniah was called to prophesy of the coming day of trouble and judgement on both God's people and the nations in response to abounding evil. But God was bringing His justice and love, not justice or love. And God's justice shows us just how deep His love truly is.
The story of Zephaniah shows us that not only is God working in our waiting, God is working even when He has been completely forgotten. And not only is God working, He is moving ever closer to us- even in our forgetting-sometimes using His hand of discipline to draw us back to Him.
And despite the chaos of the world and our own wayward hearts, God will ultimately keep His people hidden in Him in the day of trouble.
So come and join us these 6 weeks, and journey with Zephaniah as we learn through this redemptive story that God loves and delights in His people as He draws them to Himself.
This week on Abiding Free we share some amazing stories and exciting updates as we draw our first season to a close, and launch an amazing new summer devotional series on the book of Zephaniah! On today's episode we touch on the truths we will dive into as we study this book. The truth that in the darkness that seems so strong in our world today sometimes, we can be Hidden in Him, because HE is our refuge in the day of trouble.
We love being on this journey of freedom with you all!

Have you ever found yourself let down or hurt by your spouse?
It’s probably fair to say that we have all been in this scenario whether it be from a spouse or another family member. Often it’s those closest to us who hurt us the most. But when we are let down by those we love, where do we turn, and how do we stop the cycle?
This week on Abiding Free, we are discussing how to recognize when our expectations of others reach a point of seeking fulfillment. We talk about how to identify this, and why this is detrimental to our relationships.
When we are feeling empty and searching for more, there is certainly somewhere we should turn, but it's not in the relationships around us. If we place that expectation on the wrong people it can get dangerous quickly.
There is another answer, and we want to share it with you today on Abiding Free.
The Lord promises, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart. I will be found by you.”
This week, let’s keep our eyes on Jesus, the author, and perfector of our faith, and dive into Him to be the fulfillment of each and every need. He alone is our living water.

In this crazy world, there’s no shortage of restlessness, chaos, stress, and worry, but where do we go to find peace?

Unfortunately, those solutions are simply a band-aid to a much bigger issue. The good news is, there’s still hope.
There is a true promise of peace available to all of us, and today we walk you through where to find those promises and how to pursue genuine peace.

Warning-Contents of this episode contain sexual assault, rape, and abuse stories. Please be advised if any of those topics are a trigger to you.
When horrific things happen to us or those we love–things like rape, sexual assault, or other trauma of sorts—where is God? Is He there?
Today we are sharing a conversation with author and speaker Veronica Stephens. Veronica sheds light on what’s it’s like to live a life of trauma from sexual assault, verbal and physical abuse, and other family traumas. But when it comes to Veronica, that’s not what she allows to define her.
As Veronica vulnerably shares her complex story, it's easy to let your mind wonder, “God, where were you?” But even through Veronica’s darkest moments, she can now see that He was there with her all along, loving and protecting her by giving her tools to push through and allow God to continue writing her story.
Generational curses do not have to be the end of us, friends. Evil does not get the final say.
We know you will find hope and encouragement to lean into God through today's interview, even when you can’t feel Him. For it’s in those moments when He is truly closest, working out His perfect plan. Don’t give up, friends. Your story is still being written.

When it comes to being a Christian facing discord or disunity, is it better to be meek and quiet, or bold and outspoken?
Welcome back to another week of Abiding Free. This week we hope to remind you that every day, we are facing spiritual warfare–and it’s not between fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. This war is against the enemy, and his goal is to create division.
Today we are diving into how to approach sensitive topics that are not black and white in the Bible–regardless of what personality type we have. We understand that this can be confusing when convictions clash.
We are called to humility, love, unity, and quietness but we are also called to be bold lions, so which approach is more appropriate? Our hope is that by the end of this episode you have a little more clarity on that very question.
Living in the middle can be messy, and oftentimes is the hardest place to be, but as Christians, that's truly where we find unity.
Friends, Satan is trying to thwart our impact and ability to be the light by dividing us, deceiving us, and blurring the lines.
Don’t let the enemy win.

The last two years have been difficult for all of us, and when it comes to sitting at the table with those with polarizing views, it seems that we have all had to navigate a lot more recently.
But how have you handled it? Have your relationships been strained or severed because of differing views?
Friends, this is not what Christ wants for us.
Today, we are having a conversation with Shivangi Trueblood. Shivangi was raised Hindu, and today she shares her story about how the many seeds planted throughout her life ultimately led to her salvation.
Toward the end of the conversation, we also talk about the importance of working through political tensions for the sake of Christ’s name. It takes humility and self-control to live out God’s word, but if we can work through these tensions with sound minds, the body of Christ will be so much stronger and we can be yet another step closer to Abiding Free.

When is the last time you’ve done something uncomfortable?
Thank you for joining us for another week of Abiding Free. This week we are sharing a conversation with Hollywood producer, author, founder, podcast host, mom, and wife, Shelene Bryan.
This episode is one you will not want to miss.
Today, Shelene shares how her curiosity and determination to prove someone wrong quickly became a trip that would forever change her life. Her leap of faith and courage to step out in discomfort was never something that she had planned, but in retrospect, it was part of God’s plan all along. Throughout Shelene’s journey, God was weaving His perfect plan and shaping Shelene’s heart and mind to become kingdom-focused rather than career or world-focused.
Where does your focus lie?
Through today’s episode, we hope that you begin to view life through the lens of Hebrews 12 and run with perseverance the race marked before us. God has not given us his life to waste on things of this world or to focus on what doesn’t matter, but to make a lasting impact for His glory. Shelene’s life is a beautiful example of this.
Are you ready to run the race?

Do you ever wonder what it truly means to have faith?
Can you have faith and lack belief? Does having faith mean that you are automatically saved? Is it something you take action on or hold onto? Does it all go hand-in-hand?
Today, on abiding free, these are all questions that we begin to address.
We quickly unfold that faith is a dynamic and complex word, but it’s something that is essential nonetheless. While having faith isn’t always easy, it is a crucial element in our walks with Christ.
This week, our hope is that through this episode and the passages we share from scripture of people living out their faith, you feel inspired and propelled to have a lasting faith that loves God enough to endure through the good, the bad, and the difficult times.
When we learn these truths and apply these principles, we will all become one step closer to abiding in true freedom.

Does the heaviness of this world ever make you feel like you’re stuck in bondage?
Today we are talking more about freedom, but more specifically, Edenic freedom. If this is a term that’s not familiar to you, that’s ok. We will be discussing the details of what Edenic freedom is, and what it actually means to be free more in depth today.
While it’s true that the burdens of this world are often more than we can carry alone, there is hope. There is hope because we don't have to carry those burdens alone, and we have so much to look forward to and hope for.
Our hope today is that through this episode, you learn something new about the powerful story of redemptive freedom, and through that can cling to the anticipation that while there definitely are dark days, we still have so much to look forward to with the coming freedom of Heaven.

Is reading the Bible something you look forward to or do you struggle with motivation at times?
Today we are talking all about the impact that reading God’s word can have on our lives. This conversation is unique as we are sharing the perspectives of women from three different generations:
Baby Boomers-Amy Hale is a wife, mom of three, and Gigi to three who loves to encourage women. Amy became a believer early on, but did not truly become a student of the word until later on in life. Her insight on reading God’s word is compelling and convicting.
Millennials-Kristin Nave is not only the host of Abiding Free, but she is also representing the Millennial Generation today. Kristin shares pieces of her story and has amazing encouragement for those who are looking to grow in their Bible reading practices.
Gen Z- Rachael Spelling is a wife and student of God's word graduating with a BA in biblical studies. Today, Rachael shares how her shift in Bible reading not only changed her view on God, but also changed the trajectory of her life and career path.
This dynamic conversation is both enlightening and encouraging. As believers, reading the Bible should not feel like a chore, yet so often it does when we approach it with the wrong hearts. When we learn to become students of the word, everything changes.
Our hope through this conversation is that you find the encouragement to lean into God’s word and grab a hold of the freedom Christ has truly intended for you.

Nearly half of Americans are suffering with chronic illness or pain. Are you one of them?
Chances are that even if you aren’t someone who suffers with chronic illness or pain, you know someone who does. These ailments can leave us feeling discouraged, depressed, and hopeless especially when we are looking at them through an earthly lens.
But what if we told you that there is good that can come from our suffering?
This week on Abiding Free, we are diving deeper into the struggles that come along with chronic illness and pain. Shannon so graciously dives into her experience with illness, and what the reality of these experiences have forced her to learn.
While these trials can often lead us to moments of despair that leave us on our knees, we hope you will walk away from this episode being reminded that even when we are down, our loving Father is near. As we go through trials and tribulations, God meets us.
Whether you suffer with these things directly or you know someone who does, our prayer today is that you are able to shift your lens, break free from the chains that the enemy wants to bind us with and lean into the freedom that the Father has planned for us — even in our most painful moments.

How can the whole church be faithful to the great commission?
Last week, we dove into the topic of whether or not women should be pastors. This week is a continuation of this topic as we delve into the church as a whole and where our focus should be.
If you have not yet had a chance to listen to last week’s episode, we highly recommend you listen to it before listening to today’s episode. We have linked it below for easy access.
There’s no doubt that the role of women in the church is an essential one. We need to ensure that while men and women play different roles, neither one is diminished in importance. At the same time, it is crucial for both the health of the church and our hearts as believers, that we don’t lose sight of the bigger picture.
The truth is, if we are more focused on advancing women than we are the great commission, the church will be in a heap of trouble. Today, we are elaborating on this and more.
We hope that this episode challenges you to dive deeper into God’s word and gives you a launching pad to excel in your role for the greater good of the church.

Today we are opening up a can of worms about a very hot topic in the church: What is the Biblical role of women in the church? For instance, can women be pastors?
This is a significant topic because it has to do with the overall structure of the Church. It’s essential that as Christians we know where we stand on this topic, so that we can engage in crucial conversations. At the heart of it all, where we all hope to stand is firm on the word of God.
But what do we do when two sides firmly believe they have done this, yet they end up with differing perspectives?
We pray. We engage in hard conversations, and we always look at the full context of scripture. And we have grace, lots of grace.
This week, we are diving into two viewpoints on this topic: Egalitarianism and Complementarianism and having a conversation about these two views.
As we walk through these viewpoints, we dig deep into scripture and share our takeaways. While what we cover in this episode is certainly not exhaustive, our hope is that through what we share you feel more empowered and equipped to study further, pray, and even engage in conversations with others who might have a different perspective in love and truth.
When we do these things, we allow ourselves to walk in the freedom that Christ has set forth for us.

When the topic of money is brought up, how does it make you feel?
Money can certainly be a loaded topic especially in the church, but did you know that it is one of the most talked about topics in the Bible?
Today on the show we are sharing a conversation with our guest Cody Hobelmann. Cody is a certified financial planner who founded The Finish Line Pledge with his brother Kealan. The Finish Line Pledge helps people determine how much money is enough for them to live so that they can give of their finances more freely, but Cody didn’t always live this way.
In this episode, Cody shares his paradigm shift around finances, giving, and who is in charge of it all in the end. His fresh perspective is insightful and encouraging.

Is fear something that you have felt overtaking your life?
Particularly over the last two years fear is something that has run rampant in the hearts, minds, and souls of many.
While there is no doubt that we live in a fallen world full of sickness, pain, darkness, and many reasons to believe that fear is essential, what’s truly essential is that we keep our fear in check and get intentional about having a healthy relationship with fear.
Today on abiding free we are delving into three different types of fear; Fear of man, fear of COVID, and fear of evil. All of these legitimate reasons for concern. But do we let that fear drive us, or to draw us closer to the Father?
Is fear paralyzing you or propelling you to take action and live a life walking with Jesus?
As Marshall Segal on Desiring God Ministries said, “Only when God becomes our biggest fear can He become our safest place.”
Our hope today is that you walk away from this episode feeling encouraged to put your fear in check so that it is healthy, and ultimately drives you one step closer to walking in true freedom.

Where do you go in your grief?
Welcome back to Abiding Free. This week we had the absolute pleasure sharing a conversation with food stylist and devotional writer, Kara Stout. Kara lives in L.A. with her two pugs and her husband, and she spends her days sharing blog posts and creative work to praise God through the gift of her words.
Kara also has an unexpectedly beautiful story of loss and grief. Her story of suffering is one of God’s enduring faithfulness, and we feel so blessed to share it with you today.

Are you or do you know someone who struggles with mental illness?
There is no question that mental illness is a prevalent issue in today’s world. One in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness every year. One in 6 youth ages 6-17 experience a mental health disorder every year. Not to mention the rise of mental struggles that COVID has caused, yet why does it seem that this issue is rarely talked about in the church?
Today on Abiding Free we are discussing all of the above and more. One of the big questions we are digging into today is, “What are some biblical truths Christians can lean on to walk in the freedom that God has promised in the midst of mental struggles?”
Dear friend, if you have battles with mental struggles, you are not alone and there is hope. Join us today as we dive into God’s word and begin uncovering truths about mental illness and struggles such as anxiety, depression, bi-polar disorder and more.

Are you feeling exhausted, weary or burned out?
You are not alone.
The more our world progresses, the more intentional we need to be about where to say yes, when to say no, and who to turn to when we feel that we are coming undone.
Our world is so noisy, and it constantly tugs at us leaving us to feel that if we put boundaries in place and sit in quiet, we are being unproductive and becoming insignificant. We want you to know that while the above sentiment is very real, it could not be further from the truth.
When hope feels lost, the best place to turn to is Jesus. Jesus was fully human, constantly needed, and His life was hands down the most important life to ever exist. He lived 30 years, and his ministry didn’t even begin until the last three years of his life!
Three years to cram in hundreds of miracles and change the world, yet he never burned out. So why do we?
He took time away to sit with God, even when others needed Him. So why don’t we?
This week, we are covering all of that and more.
Burnout does not have to be inevitable.
Boundaries bring freedom. Listen today to learn more!
Episode Highlights:
● What burnout is.
● How we recognize burnout.
● How Jesus prevented burnout.
● Why boundaries are essential
● The importance of determining where our boundaries are so we can walk in freedom.

Where does the desire to perform stem from?
Whether you have kids or not, it’s almost certain that at some point or another, a child has stopped you and said, “Watch this!” or “Look at me!” It can be frustrating at times especially because it’s typically the most inconvenient moments that they choose to perform.
But even as adults, the desire to perform is something that is deeply rooted in us. Whether we are trying to meet a quota at work, receive accolades in our parenting, or get validation from our spouse, there is no doubt that this desire to perform is prevalent.
But is this desire sinful?
In today’s episode, we are diving deeper into this topic of validation and the desire to perform. We cover everything from where we get this desire from, to what we can do to shift our focus if it starts creeping in in an unhealthy way.
Is the desire to perform a sin, who we are seeking the validation from, or both? And how do we keep it all in check to continue striving toward the freedom we all crave?

Have you ever wondered if your relationship with your Dad affects your relationship with God the Father?
This week, we are sharing a conversation with Author and Pastor's wife, Lanna Andersen. Lanna graciously shares how her life experiences led her to write to other women who might be dealing with relational barriers that are keeping them from a deeper relationship with God.
Not only does Lanna talk about what God’s true design is for fathers, but she dives into different “dad distortions'' to help break down some of the issues that we might be subconsciously facing. This is such a heavy topic, yet Lanna beautifully and delicately breaks it down.
We hope this episode resonates with those of you who need this message. And our prayer is that you walk away today feeling a little lighter, less burdened, and one step closer to walking in the freedom that God has planned.

Do you ever have seasons in life where God feels absent?
So often, we face trials that seem insurmountable. But the truth is that even when it feels like it, we are never trekking through the unknown alone. God is always with us, and He has always been with us. We simply have to remember. Remember His goodness, and remember all that He has done for us.
Today, Kristin and Shannon share real life experiences on seasons where they had to “remember to remember.” Not only do they share from their own lives, but they give tactical tips on how we can keep track of the miracles God has done in each of our own lives so that when those tough times come we can always choose to remember God’s goodness and trust that he will walk us through every season.

It’s a term that you might not be familiar with, but almost certainly have experienced first hand because it’s running rampant in our country right now. It’s something that can be masked as a “good thing” and if we aren’t careful is a trap that we can all easily fall into.

In today’s episode, Shannon gives a breakdown of what progressive christinity is, why it can be so dangerous, and why it’s actually robbing us of a relationship with Jesus when we fall prey to it.
