Michael A. Butler is an artist, historian, and humanitarian who continues to leave his mark on Sag Harbor. Butler has been on the board of the Eastville Community Historical Society for over 20 years, serving as president, vice president, and recording secretary. He is also the chairperson of the St. David AME Zion Church cemetery, a member of East Hampton’s Anti-Bias Task Force, a lifetime member of the NAACP, as well a former board member of the East End AIDS Wellness Project, and a former member of the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreation Center.

Kindall Gant (she/they) is a Black femme poet and New Orleans native based in Brooklyn. She experiments with visual storytelling as liberation through themes of home, heritage and history, bringing poems into conversation with expressive forms like film, visual art, music and photography. They have received support from Cave Canem, the Poetry Foundation, MASS MoCA, the Saltonstall Foundation, and the Watering Hole among other arts institutions. Her work has been nominated for Best of the Net and a Pushcart Prize. Poems appear or are forthcoming in Torch, the What a Time to Be Alive zine carried at the Hopscotch Reading Room in Berlin, the 1619 Speaks anthology published by the Sims Library of Poetry, Brooklyn Poets, Obsidian, and Polemical Zine. Vega creates drawings, objects, sculptural installations, and happenings inspired by local markets, self-made architecture, and vendor carts found in the streets and beaches of Central America. His sculptures are Third World replicas of the sophisticated capsules and satellites developed by NASA and the Soviet Space Program during the ‘Space Race’; however, they are assembled with found materials, including transmutable elements, colored lights, and live plants. This series, titled Tropical Space Proyectos, comments on the effects of the Cold War in contemporary El Salvador and Central America. In other artworks, the artist reinterprets ancient Mesoamerican architectural sculpture, Modernism’s iconic buildings, and contemporary surveillance systems, creating an ironic and humorous fusion between past and present, first and third worlds.
Born in El Salvador in 1972, Simón Vega graduated in Fine Arts at the University of Veracruz in Mexico in 2000. He received a Master´s in Contemporary Arts from the Complutense University in Madrid in 2006.
He has exhibited his work extensively in Europe, the United States and Latin America, including the 55th Venice Biennial in Italy (2013), the IX Havana Biennial in Cuba (2006), at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, California (2018), at the Bronx Museum in New York (2019), at the Centre Pompidou, París for the exhibition Cosmópolis 2 (2019) and at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid amongst others. In 2019, Anangookwe obtained their BFA focusing on Jewelry Design from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Since graduating, Anangookwe’s visual work has been exhibited across the United States in galleries such as All My Relations Gallery (Minneapolis, Minnesota), The New Gallery (Clarksville, Tennesse), and Form & Concept (Santa Fe, New Mexico). Anangookwe is the recipient of residencies, grants, and awards through Vermont Studio Center, Green Olive Arts (Tetouan, Morocco), and Alaska State Council on the Arts. In 2023, they received an honorable mention for the James Welch Poetry Prize and were a 2019 SITE Santa Fe Scholar. Anangookwe currently resides in Anchorage, AK, and performs at the monthly Writers Block slam poetry nights.

He has been an Art Educator in the South Bronx for over ten years and received his Bachelor’s in Fine Arts and his Master’s in Art Direction from Pratt Institute.
“I’m inspired to create artwork based on the familiar objects that I view through my daily travels. I discover elements in existing architecture and among everyday items found within the home. I ultimately set out to express a meaningful story about events in my life and those found in the communities in which I work. I utilize different media in the creation of my work. Born in Atlanta, GA, in the 1980s, Brooklyn-based multi-disciplinary artist Darlene Deloris studied History and African American Studies at the University of Georgia and SUNY Empire State University. She uses a variety of mediums, textures, colors, & symbols to create portraits that give voice to the Black woman who is constantly transposing between a state of angst and of regality. In 2014, she began pursuing an art career. In 2018, she moved to New York City, where she flourished with the opportunity to instruct art classes. She has orchestrated hundreds of art projects for children aged 2-14 in public and private facilities. She is a teaching artist for Supermoon Community Artspace in Ridgewood, New York. She teaches adult classes several times a year with Supermoon and Tiny Art Space, also located in Ridgewood, Queens. In 2019, she joined the Brooklyn-based gallery sk. ArtSpace as the Gallery Assistant, now creating alongside the SK Collective as a founding member. In 2021, her work was selected by SaveArtSpace to be displayed on a billboard in Brooklyn, NY.

Tammie was born and raised in Northwestern Montana on the Flathead Reservation. Her father was Qlispe’a and Seli’š, and her mother was the daughter of non-Indigenous settlers who moved to the reservation in the 1920s. Her aesthetic is situated between these two cultural heritages and explores their complicated history and her identity as a mixed-blood person.
Using both Indigenous and non-Indigenous ways of making and seeing, her work ranges across several different processes and materials, including but not limited to paint, wood, fabric, resin, hair, bone, paper, and beads.
Tammie earned her MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, MA, in 2022 and her BFA from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA, in 2019. Additionally, she holds a BS in Anthropology/Archaeology from Montana State University, located in Bozeman, MT. She and her art practice are located in Bremerton, WA.

Isabella Fernanda is a visual artist based in New York. Her work examines the exploration of identity through the societal norms and peculiarities that emerge within our contemporary world. Fernanda’s work has appeared in exhibitions, film festivals, and virtual shows. Most recently she exhibited at Shockboxx and at Ma's House & BIPOC Art Studio in 2023. She has performed live on the New York City Streets and Subways and has been digitally projected onto Long Island's Village of Patchogue MoCA L.I.ghts’s site-specific installation in 2022. Her short film, CLOSER, first premiered at Pace University's Student Film festival in 2020. She has collaborated with Performance Artist Rebecca Pristoop’s, “The Moving Company”, articulating an original live art performance at the Pace University Art Gallery in 2019.

Jewelry works explore ways of reclaiming and relearning Indigenous knowledge systems to establish paths toward self-sustainability and decolonization. Born and raised in northern New York, Margaret Jacobs is an enrolled member of the Akwesasne Mohawk Tribe. Jacobs is a 2018 awardee from the Rebecca Blunk Fund through the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA), a 2019 recipient of the Artist in Business Leadership Award through the First Peoples Fund, and a 2022 United States Artist Fellowship Nominee. Jacobs is a metalsmith known for her steel sculpture and powder-coated jewelry. Her work explores the tension and harmony between natural and man-made, often intermingling unexpected and contradicting materials to explore those relationships. Jacobs has participated in several artist residencies, including at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Sante Fe, NM, Franconia Sculpture Park in Shafer, MN, and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT, where she received a Native American Fellowship through the Harpo Foundation. Denise (Weetahmoe) is an established artist and life long teacher, not to mention the Ma's House Workshop Coordinator and a well respected member of the community. Artist Profile Silva-Dennis graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, New York, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art. Upon graduation, she received honors in her discipline. Silva-Dennis works primarily in acrylic for her figurative paintings. Her professional achievements include two paintings selected for the exhibit ‘In Beauty It Has Begun…’ sponsored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smithsonian Institute. She also won the Parrish Art Museum’s Judge’s Award in the painting category. Silva-Dennis is also an accomplished beadwork craftswoman. The traditional Eastern Woodland style of beadwork was handed down to her from her mother and elder women of Shinnecock and Hassanamisco-Nipmuc Nations. Her work includes mandala necklace and earring sets, beaded medicine fans, walking sticks, beaded cradleboards, beaded moccasins, and beaded crowns. I celebrate people through the many hues and phenotypes of people of color, by highlighting everyday life and stories. To create, I rely on vintage photographs and my collection of personal portraits. I interpret the images through drawings on paper. I also use words to share my feelings and insight into social norms and narratives that deserve reexamination in today’s time. I repeat fragments of words in order to archive history, now and then. About the Artist Alma Leppla (they/she) is a mixed-race, queer, Latine, visual artist and educator whose work seeks to build community by celebrating intersectional identities. Alma is based in San Francisco but grew up in Tampa with their Cuban family. They currently serve as the Latinx Teaching Artist Fellow and Studio Artist Board Representative for Root Division. In 2021, they co-founded Queer Rain: a collective celebrating queer BIPOC femme & gender-expansive artists. The collective recently published its inaugural publication, an anthology featuring 20 artists working on the intersection of queerness and BIPOC identities. Leppla received a Master of Arts in Art Education from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2017. They have shown work nationally and internationally through solo exhibitions, group shows, and artist residencies. In addition to maintaining their art practice, they have served as an arts facilitator and educator, working with schools, community organizations, and institutions since 2008. (Recorded August 9th) Alumni Artist Pamella Allen and I your host Hunter Begun sit down for a chat focused around her art, we discuss her life leading up to her Ma's House residency, upcoming programs, shows, and even about our favorite comedians. Artist Profile Pamella Allen is a Jamaican born, Brooklyn based visual artist in practice for over 30 years whose works have been exhibited in traditional gallery and non-traditional settings, in site specific public art corporate commissions for healing spaces such as Bellevue Hospital for the HHC Art-In-Medicine program, community centers and private collections across the globe. A largely self-taught expressionist artist, Pamella's work is layered in process. Utilizing traditional acrylic, oil and encaustic painting, printmaking, sculpture, paper making, collage, Installation, photography/video essay & prose to develop her own archetype, a universal language of images inspired by symbolism, indigenous practices and the natural world that speak to the diversity of her Jamaican/African heritage and lived experiences as a woman, an immigrant living in the USA, and a world traveler and sailor. “I investigate self through memory, moment and the mystic of nature." Following “a calling to make art with the youth” while living in Africa and then while in residency in India; In addition to her continued studio practice, for the past 12 years Pamella has been in practice as a teaching artist sharing her creative process with community in school settings, senior centers, museums, and healing spaces throughout New York with organizations creating site specific public arts mural, mixed media installations, and anthologies for publication. “The benefit to bringing arts practice into collaboration with the community cannot be overstated, it is priceless watching individuals blossom in the wonder of their own creativity and come together to celebrate their unity and diversity by using their creative voice”.
