Every month (on the first Friday of the month), as you may already know, I do a monologue instead of having an interviewee here on Finding Certainty. No dialogue or call-ins. Just yours truly sharing my thoughts and experience on a specific topic (I’ve planned out 26, one for each letter of the alphabet. It's going to take me a couple of years to get through them all). This week, with August being the 8th month of the year, we’re at “H” is for Humility. It seems a little funny, talking about Humility like I’m an expert or something. I’m not, but I do have a few thoughts I’d like to share. In fact, each of the topics I’ve addressed this year have been areas I’m personally working on and trying to improve at myself. Just like last month's topic (Giving), Humility is a subject I think often about and continue to work at daily. Sometimes it’s easy and sometimes it’s not. I have some strong opinions on each of these topics, have learned some powerful (sometimes painful) lessons regarding them, and they’re each something I’m learning a lot about and trying to master in my life. I believe Humility is one of the most fundamental principles and characteristics we’ve all got to master if we want to be truly successful in life, not to mention “find” and develop CERTAINTY in our lives. There are a lot of ways that we can learn humility and, in my experience, when we need it, the Lord is happy to provide reminders. Every month (on the first Friday of the month), as you may already know, I do a monologue instead of having an interviewee here on Finding Certainty. No dialogue or call-ins. Just yours truly sharing my thoughts and experience on a specific topic (I’ve already planned out 26, one for each letter of the alphabet. It's going to take me a couple of years to get through them all). This week, with July being the 7th month of the year, we’re at “G” is for Giving. Just like last month's topic (Faith), Giving is a subject I think often about and continue to work at daily. Sometimes it’s easy and other times it’s not. I have some very strong opinions concerning the topic, have learned some powerful lessons surrounding it, and it’s still something I’m learning about and trying to improve at. I believe it’s one of the most fundamental principles to “finding” and developing more CERTAINTY in our lives that exists. There are a lot of ways that we can Give vs. Receive. Most fill us up, expand our visions, bring us more joy, satisfaction, and success. It’s an eternal principle, one proven many times over. If you’re ever struggling … with your health, your emotions, going through an illness, a challenge, a betrayal, or a loss, it’s easy to focus inward and feel forlorn and forgotten. It’s natural. We all feel that way. I’ve learned from long experience, though, that the best way to feel better is to look outward vs. inward, to get out and go serve others … to “lose myself in that service” as Jesus liked to say. It’s hard to describe but it invariably makes ME feel better, even though I’m not the one “receiving” the service. It’s a mystery but it absolutely works. I’ve seen too many examples of this to deny it in my life. If we can remember this, it can change our lives, our relationships, our very nation and the world as a whole. I hope we can get there. Just like last month's topic (Composure), Discipline is a subject I think about often and work away at constantly. I have some strong opinions concerning it and I’ve learned some valuable lessons about the topic throughout my life. (I’m STILL learning. After all, we’re all a work in progress and, yes, it takes discipline to truly make progress in our professions and lives). What is discipline? What does it mean? How do you define it and why does it matter? All good questions addressed and dissected in this episode. It's definitely a goal of mine and, I think it’s safe to say, of anyone who wants to be successful at whatever their pursuit or pursuits in life might be. Whether you’re an athlete, a musician, a comedian, or an entrepreneur … a student, a parent, a lover, or a friend: discipline and its close cousin, consistency, are two secrets to success. Today’s conversation (“with myself”), like so many of these monologues, is one-part analysis, one-part commentary, coupled with large doses of self-reflection mixed in. Every month (on the first Friday of the month), as previously mentioned, I’ve decided to do a monologue instead of having a guest here on Finding Certainty. No dialogue or call-ins. Earlier this year, on June 30th to be exact, my scheduled guest had last minute technical difficulties and was unable to log onto Zoom to join me for the show. Wth literally zero notice, or time to prepare, I ended up having to do a last minute one-person monologue, off the cuff (and from the heart). I spoke on how we can FIND, yes, even CREATE, more Certainty in our lives, even in the midst of today's looming UNcertainty ... (i.e., fears, rising costs, worries, and wars and rumors of war, as it were). I enjoyed the chance to speak from the heart a great deal. If Rush Limbaugh could speak for two or three hours at a time without any guests (and not even a script it seemed) and do as masterful a job as he did, I know it can be done. In 2022 I had the privilege of being invited to a power lunch with billionaire small business coach, Bill Walsh, by my good friends, Simone and Rick Kvalheim, Alzheimer's reversal experts and owners of X-cellerated Health. Recently, I was invited to speak at a big CEO Summit at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Hundreds of CEOs from across America and around the globe were in attendance, all gathered together to exchange ideas and develop relationships. The Dean of the LU School of Business, Dave Brat, did a masterful job of organizing, leading, and mc'ing the event. Newt Gingritch was a keynote speaker, as was the President of Ghana, Winsome Sears, Lt. Governor of Virginia, and others. We met some incredible leaders and made some powerful business connections as well as lifelong friends. If you haven't ever been to the Liberty University campus, I highly recommend you check it out. It's a beautiful, clean campus and the students we met were outstanding ... clean-cut, articulate, and happy they seemed. As the largest evangelical Christian college in the U.S., the whole experience was an impressive, even spiritual, event and I'm grateful my team and I were able to attend. One of the unique things, about this annual CEO Summit is that a large portion of the attendees come from Africa and/or are focused on increasing trade relations between Africa and the U.S. Among other things, the Summit is a remarkable collaboration between U.S. interests and African interests, a braintrust and bridge-building exchange that is inspiring to say the least. As part of this visit, my VoiceAmerica colleague, Frank Helring, host of BizZne$$ BuzZ, who attended with me, and I, met a gifted grouping of black American leaders who are bringing about change in Africa that will be felt for generations to come.
